To the average millennial the terms
Atomic Age and Space Race may
seem like ancient history, however, this
two-decade period saw some of the
most profound advances in science
and technology in human history. It also
encompasses bringing together new
art techniques from previous decades
from Europe and the West expanding
them with fresh ideas and new creative
techniques representative of the
influences of science and technology of
the period.

Following World War II changes in
society, in general, were prevalent
throughout the world especially in the
so-called advanced countries. The
science and the development of the
atomic bomb not only brought about
the spectacle of great death and
destruction that humans could weck
on themselves but it also initiated
the development of innovations in
technology for all aspects of human
existence along with space travel to
other planets.

INNdulge, a Gay Clothing Optional Resort in Palm
Springs, is Under New Management
The owners of the Palm Springs gay
clothing optional resort, INNdulge, in
have announced the property will be
under new management. Beginning
Sept 1, Jay Cook will take over the dayto-day
operations of the their awardwinning
mid-century jewel. “Jay is the
solution to allowing Sandy and me
the opportunity to travel more and
ultimately ease into something that
might look like part-time retirement
while remaining active in the resort,”
explains Jon Jackson. He and his
partner Sandy purchased INNdulge
on a whim ten years ago. “We never
thought about owning a hotel until
we learned the iconic INNdulge resort
in Palm Springs was for sale,” Jackson
explains. Since that time, they have run
the property mostly on their own. They
had a manager last summer, but Mr.
Cook will take on a larger role. He will
be in charge of the entire resort, from

guest services to employee scheduling,
trouble shooting, and more.
Mr. Cook is someone Jon says he can
uniquely trust completely with the daily
operations of the resort. “Jay is my ex,”
he reveals. “We started dating back
in the late 80s in Salt Lake City when
Jay was an undergrad and I was in law
school at University of Utah. We moved
to San Francisco together in the early
90s and spent the better part of ten
years together.”
“We’ve been separated for over twenty
years now,” says Jay Cook, who now
resides in Phoenix with his husband and
dogs. “But we remain two people who
like each other. Jon and I talked about
the idea of my taking over as manager
a couple of times over the years but
now seemed like the perfect time.”

Jay Cook recently retired from Fedex
where he spent 25 years driving
deliveries predominantly in downtown
San Francisco and the surrounding
Bay Area. Before that, he owned a
protein shake shop in the Castro and
waited tables at the Castro’s infamous
Patio Cafe and the Rio Grande Café in
Salt Lake City. “It will be nice to return
to a more stationary job that allows
for real people interaction,” he says.
Cook and his family will remain living
in Phoenix. He will commute to Palm
Springs every week for the job.
Built in 1958, INNdulge is located
in the heart of Warm Sands. The
hotel surrounds one of the largest
pool courtyards in the city. The lush
landscaping features immaculately
landscaped lawns and walkways with
large modern figure sculptures by artist
Mavis McClure, all framed by incredible
views of the San Jacinto Mountains.
“I’m excited to build on the success
that Jon and Stacy have achieved at
INNdulge,” Cook continues. “They’ve
built a strong clientele who have come
to rely on Palm Springs and INNdulge as
their yearly vacation destination. I’m
eager to help continue their legacy.”

The term science fiction was becoming
not only a possibility but a reality. As an
example, the comic strip detective Dick
Tracy used a wristwatch in which you
could not only talk to but view another
person. That is now an everyday
reality not only with a wristwatch but
with a handheld telephone which
can give directions, answer questions,
compute, play music, as well as provide
basic communication with others not
to mention television. The science
fiction of people traveling to outer
space and other planets became a
reality in the Space Race competition
between the United States and the
Soviet Union to develop the aerospace
potential for communication satellites
and human spaceflight. The work
in creating weapons and space
technology inspired the development
of everyday uses of technology such as
the microwave oven and the desktop
computer.
Art the oldest method of human
aesthetic communication visually and
sonically required reactions from artists
to these rapidly changing advances
in technology. After WWII New York
became a place where European
artists, art collectors, and dealers came
escaping the Nazi repression of the
1940s into a new modernism of abstract
expressionism, surrealism, cubism, and
a host of other isms that explained
how artists were creating in innovative
ways to express a changing more
technologically advanced world.

The U.K. Sculpture Peter Peri expressed
the human interaction with atomic
technology in his sculpture “Atomic
Boy”installed on an education institution
in London.
The British artist, Richard Hamilton
created a collage representing
changes of the new Modern age of
the 50s that has been a visual icon that
has been used in advertising and other
representations.
A central figure of a male hunk holding
a large Tootsie roll pop with a vacuum
cleaner in the background, a reel to
reel tape recorder, and a female figure
in front of a TV with a canned ham on
a coffee table near her all representing
aspects of the new science and
technology influences on daily living.
Other artists with recognizable names,
Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Max Ernst,
Marcel Duchamp, were all bringing
samples of their creativity to the new
society of the Atomic Space Age world.

to incorporate the sciences, biology,
computers, and the physical sciences,
kinetics, into their art practices looking at
the artist’s role in finding the interaction
of science and technology into the arts.

We have just witnessed the end of a
20-year war of the United States’ involvement in
the country of Afghanistan. The death toll on all
sides of this war is staggering however paled by
the death toll of the use of the Atomic bomb on
Nagasaki and Hiroshima purportedly ending WWII
and killing over 200,000 mostly civilians. The art
depicting the end of this tragedy the Nagasaki
Peace Sculpture created by the artist Seiho
Kitamura hopefully will stand as the artistic symbol
of the futility of war and the misuse of science and
newer more destructive weaponry
to never be used again.

Reduce Your Risk of Falling by Taking
These Simple Steps
(StatePoint) A fall can result in
unwanted outcomes, including
injury, loss of independence, and
a decreased ability to do the
things that are most important to
you or a loved one.
Each year, 3 million older adults
are treated in emergency
departments for fall injuries. Even
falls that don’t lead to injury can
provoke a fear of falling that
causes you to avoid the activities
that keep you healthy, strong,
and ultimately less likely to fall.
While falls are dangerous, the
good news is that experts say
they’re largely preventable.
The American Physical Therapy
Association offers the following
tips to help you reduce your risk of
falling:
1. Get moving. For older adults,
physical activity reduces the risk
of falling and fall-related injuries.
Stay active to maintain the
strength, flexibility, coordination,
and balance needed to prevent
falls. From swimming to yoga to
walking, take part in a variety of
physical activities that you enjoy.
Talk to your physical therapist to
determine which activities are
safe for you.
“While many factors can
contribute to our chances of
falling as we get older, falling is
not a normal part of aging,” says
physical therapist and American
Physical Therapy Association
spokesperson Greg Hartley, PT,
DPT. “Working with a physical
therapist can empower you or a
loved one to regain balance and
strength.”

Third Eye Blind Headlines. 35th
Annual Palm Springs Pride Festival
Includes Diverse Slate of Artists
Festival Returns to Arenas Rd. and Palm Canyon Drive
with Downtown Event Zone
Third Eye Blind, Jody Watley, A Flock of Seagulls, The
Robyn Party, Shannon, and Jeanie Tracy top the 35th
annual Greater Palm Springs Pride Festival. The Festival
will celebrate and embrace the region’s diverse LGBTQ
community as part of Pride week November 1-7 in
downtown Palm Springs on Arenas Rd. and Palm Canyon
Drive. The annual worldwide Pride theme is You Are
Included.
Alternative rock band Third Eye Blind headlines the
Festival and sets the stage for an unprecedented and
diverse group of LGBTQ and allied performers in the
Palm Springs Pride lineup. Third Eye Blind will play a
60-minute set Saturday, Nov 6. The Festival will be free
(with a suggested donation) and include 70 pop, drag,
rock’ n’ roll, country, and Broadway-style performances
over three days.
The Festival will occur in outdoor venues and include
three days of dancing in the streets on Arenas Rd
between Indian Canyon and Calle Encilia. On Palm
Canyon Drive, the Festival will be between Amado and
Tahquitz and the surrounding area of the new City Park
(Museum Way and Belardo Rd). There will be open-air
beverage lounges, food vendors, a festival marketplace,
T-Mobile Youth Zone, and a Children’s Garden for the
kids.
There’s something for everyone at the most significant
annual LGBTQ street party in Palm Springs. Festival
highlights include the Art of Pride with LGBTQ artists,

free health resources, including COVID-19 testing,
vaccinations, and HIV testing sites. Take your photo with
Diva, the 20’ tall pink poodle, or Arty, the 20’ tall cuddly
leather bear. Weekend hosts include Bella da Ball, Jason
Stuart, Shann Carr, and Scott Nevins.
“After the stress, uncertainty, and isolation of the
pandemic, this is a significant time for our community
to come together. Pride will be a coming-out celebration
of our beautiful community, an opportunity to honor
those we have lost and give a voice to the power of selfexpression,
inclusiveness, and love,” said Ron deHarte,
President and CEO of Greater Palm Springs Pride. “We
celebrate and use the Pride platform to resist hate,
intolerance, racism, and bigotry. Together we affirm our
fight for immigration reform, access to health care, and
trans rights.”
“This unprecedented entertainment lineup has been
made possible by the support from the City of Palm
Springs, PS Resorts, Effen Vodka, Bud Light, and the
Lighthouse Dispensaries.”
Palm Canyon Drive Comes Alive with Art Installation
In addition to the entertainment lineup, the Festival
will boast a spectacular art installation. American
artist Yvette Mattern’s Global Rainbow, a laser light
sculpture, presented by Lighthouse Dispensaries, will
be a featured attraction during the Pride weekend
festivities. The large-scale public art light installation
aims to celebrate our diverse communities and
symbolize hope and peace, beams seven rays of laser
light representing the spectrum of the seven colors of a
rainbow. The same colors are found in the Gilbert Baker
rainbow flag, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and
violet. The exhibition’s west coast premiere will run two
consecutive nights, beginning November 5, 2021.
The artwork will utilize specially designed lasers to

project a large-scale abstraction of a natural rainbow.
Originating from high above Palm Canyon Drive at
Amado Rd, the seven parallel beams of laser light will
hover above Palm Canyon Drive as far as the eye can see
until they finally diminish to a colorful glow over South
Palm Canyon.
Performers will come together on four stages, including
the Effen Vodka Main Stage on Palm Canyon Drive at
Amado, Park Stage presented by DAP Health in the new
City Park, the Alaska Airlines Altitude Lounge on Belardo
between Museum Way and Tahquitz, and the Arenas
Stage hosted by Channel Q on Arenas Rd at Calle Encilia.
The lineup and performance times are subject to change
and include:
Third Eye Blind - The band behind hits “Semi-Charmed
Life” and “Never Let You Go” will headline the Palm
Springs Pride Festival at 8:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov 6, on
the Main Stage.
The musical journey that has brought us “Jumper,” “How’s
It Going to Be,” and the 2018 EP of cover songs “Thanks
for Everything” finds Third Eye Blind collaborating with
Alexis Krauss of Sleigh Bells (“Screamer”), Ryan Olson
of Marijuana Death Squad, and Poliça (“Who Am I” and
“Got So High”), and the album’s musical consigliere, Billy
Corgan.
The Robyn Party - This Party is Killing You! The original
and longest-running tribute dance party to the Swedish
pop icon, Robyn. The DJ and Party trio ADVENTURE[s]
include Russ Marshalek, Marley Magaziner, and
Christopher Choyce. Friday, Nov 5 at 7:00 p.m. Arenas
Stage.
A Flock of Seagulls - Grammy® award winner, A Flock of
Seagulls, led by 80s legend Mike Score, will take you on
a stroll back in time and relive those awesome 80s radio
and MTV video hits “I Ran (so far away),” “A Space Age
Love Song,” “The More You Live, The More You Love,” and
“ Wishing (if I had a photograph of you). Sunday, Nov 7 at
4:30 p.m. Effen Vodka Main Stage.
Jody Watley – Grammy® Award winner and R&B dance
artist will headline the Palm Springs Pride Coming Out
Celebration. Friday, Nov 5 at 8:00 p.m. Effen Vodka Main
Stage.
Shannon - International queen of dance known for her
1984 hit “Let the Music Play,” which reached No. 8 on
the pop charts and topped the dance charts. The song
is recognized as a founding force for modern-day pop
electronica. Shannon will appear Friday, Nov 5 at 6:30
p.m. Effen Vodka Main Stage.
Jeanie Tracy - The soulful Dance Diva and top ten
Billboard artist, Jeanie Tracy is known for recent club hits
“The Power,” “Cha Cha Heels,” and “Party People.” Tracy
is a two-time Grammy® winner for her songs on Carlos
Santana’s SUPERNATURAL cd and the Titanic Soundtrack.
Other hits include “Livin’ for Your Love (Your Love),” “I’m
Your Jeanie,” “Sing Your Own Song,” and “Can I Come Over
And Play With You Tonight.” Friday, Nov 5 at 7:30 p.m.

Beth Sacks – Direct from New York! International
acclaimed house artist has been working with
international circuit remixer and Producer DJ Aron since
2012. Hit tracks play around the world at many major
circuit parties include “Let’s Burn It Out,” “I Came To
Work,” and anthems, “Voulez Vous,” “What’s Up,” and
“Imagine.” Saturday, Nov 6 at 5:35 p.m. Effen Vodka Main

Trans Chorus of Los Angeles - The premiere all Transidentified
chorus in America. A Chorus of transgender,
gender non-conforming, gender non-binary, gender

2. Know your risks. A physical
therapist can help you assess your
risk factors and develop a plan to
address them so you can remain
independent. Tell your doctor
or physical therapist if you have
any dizziness, loss of balance, or
trouble seeing. be sure to tell them
whether you fell in the last year.
3. Check your medications. Many
drugs can cause dizziness, loss of
balance, blurry vision, and more. If
you have any of these symptoms,
review your medications with your
pharmacist or doctor.
4. Assess your home’s safety.
Assess your home to fix or remove
anything that could cause trips or
slips, such as throw rugs, clutter,
poor lighting, and wobbly furniture
or handrails. It’s also a good idea
to install a secure grab bar in the
shower and next to the toilet for
sturdy support on slippery floors.
If you can’t make these safety
improvements yourself, ask a
friend or family member to help.
Check with your doctor, physical
therapist, or area agency on
aging for local programs that offer
home safety assessments.
5. Work with a physical therapist.
Physical therapy (with exercise)
focused on balance, stability, and
the ability to perform common
tasks is recommended and can
prevent falls, according to the U.S.
Preventive Services Task Force.
Physical therapists are able to help
you avoid a fall in the first place,
as they are movement experts
who can work with you to assess
your fall risk factors and develop
a plan to address them. They will
advise you on making your home
safer, educate you about medical
risk factors linked to falls, and
design a safe balance training
program specific to you.
