FOREWORD
<strong>Glade</strong> on the Border: An Ec-stasy from Truth and Will
Opera Gallery Seoul is pleased to present <strong>Glade</strong> on the Border: An Ec-stasy from Truth
and Will, an exhibition by Sukho Kang, Deokhan Kim, and Eunkyung Lee. This exhibition
promotes Korean artists selected through the first ‘Opera Gallery Artist Open Call’. The
three selected artists invite visitors to a world of infinite possibilities with their highly
completed works.
Sukho Kang, Deokhan Kim, and Eunkyung Lee use methods of expression based on atypical
and contingent factors such as nature, time, and single-momentum senses. Their approach
presents new views that are immune to both the assailment of the human civilisations’
collective ego pursuing absolute truth and the individual ego of the artist chasing after
free will.
The Ec-stasy presented in common by the three artists could be named as “middleness.”
Acting as intermediaries or channelers, the artists do not put themselves forth as the
subjects (the performers) of their artistic practice, but neither do they retreat entirely
to the position of the object. Beings of middleness — the realm outside activeness and
passiveness, between cosmos and chaos — the artists have placed their works on a glade.
Meaning, while every work of art is an incident devised by the artist, the works could remain
safe from being privatised by the artist or the viewers, and their meanings unscathed
from the collective and the individual egos. Consequently, middleness is elevated to an
entirely new realm instead of being an accommodative, neutral world. From there, we will
encounter possibilities that are larger and more diverse than ever before.
Opera Gallery Seoul is thrilled to showcase the works of three talented artists and invite
you to discover the Korean emerging art scene.
