1. Start with the right pumpkin.
Choose one that's fresh, with a sturdy stem, no bruises, and a
flat bottom so it won't roll while you carve.
2. Cut from the bottom, not the top. Michael
Natiello, pumpkin carving pro and creative director for The Great
Jack-o'-Lantern Blaze, says cutting your "lid" from the bottom of
the pumpkin helps prevent the sides from caving in later.
3. If you do carve from the top, cut out the lid
on an angle. This way it won't drop inside the pumpkin
when you put it back on top, like it would with a straight upand-down
cut. A boning knife should work well for this.
4. Scoop out all the pulp (and then some). You
can buy a special "claw" for pumpkin gutting, but an ice cream
scoop will do just fine. Thin the inner wall of the "face" area to
1¼-inch thick, so it will be easier to pierce the shell.
5. Sketch out your design on paper first. If you
draw your jack-o'-lantern face to size, Natiello says you can
use it as a pattern: Just tape it to the front of your pumpkin
and use a fork or pencil to poke holes along the lines you want
to carve. (Or save yourself from creative blocks by getting a
pumpkin carving kit, complete with a marker, scraper, cutting
tools, and pre-made patterns.)
6. Hold the pumpkin in your lap. It's easier to create
features when the face is gazing up at you. Natiello suggests
using a serrated kitchen knife or an X-Acto knife for carving,
but to make intricate designs, you could try using a small saw.
Just don't cut on a slant — clean up-and-down slices look best.
How to carve a pumpkin
7. Start by making simple rough cuts. If you get
the big pieces of pumpkin out of the way first, you can go back
and clean up the edges of your design later.
8. Use your scraps creatively. Make a tongue, pipe,
or hair accessories out of a discarded piece of pumpkin shell,
for example.
9. Keep your pumpkin fresh. Natiello recommends
spreading petroleum jelly on the cut edges to seal in moisture.
If your pumpkin still shrivels a few days later, you can revive it
with a facedown soak in cold water for up to eight hours.
10. Create a chimney. First, leave the lid on for a few
minutes while the candle burns. Then make a small hole where
the lid has blackened. Or, save yourself the stress and go with
battery-operated votives instead.
11. Sprinkle cinnamon inside the lid. That way,
when you light the candle, your jack-o'-lantern will smell like
a pumpkin pie. Yum.

Hanging Bat Craft
Here’s a simple hanging bat craft for kids using empty toilet paper rolls. These
adorable cardboard tube bats are a great way for kids to help decorate for
fall or Halloween. They also make a great activity to go with the children’s
book, Stellaluna! (Free bat wing template is provided on website www.
buggyandbuddy.com.)
Materials for Bat Craft
Cardboard tube (We used an empty toilet paper roll.)
Tempera paint (black or brown) and paintbrush
Construction paper (black or brown)
Black pipe cleaners
Scissors
Single hole punch (This is my favorite! It can punch through multiple
sheets without making your hand sore!)
Glue
Googly eyes
Marker (We used black and silver Sharpies.)
Bat wing template (optional)
How to Make the Bat Craft
1. Paint your cardboard tube either black or brown (depending on the color
bat you’d like to make). This is our favorite tempera paint to use. I love the
colors and it doesn’t have a strong paint odor like other tempera paints.
2. While the cardboard tube is drying, draw some bat wings onto
construction paper and cut them out. (If you don’t want to draw them
yourself, you can use our bat wing template.)
3. Glue the wings onto the back of the cardboard tube.
4. Cut out some little triangles from your construction paper to make
ears. Glue these onto the bat, along with some googly eyes. Use a marker
to draw a mouth.
5. Punch two holes in the bottom of your cardboard tube. This is where
the legs will go.
6. Cut a black pipe cleaner in half. Twist one end of each pipe cleaner
through each punched hole.

8 slices mozzarella

1/2 c. marinara
4 black olives
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Cut
mozzarella slices into ghost shapes using
a paring knife. • Spread a thin layer of
marinara over pizza bagel and top with
ghost. • Bake until cheese is melty, 10
minutes. • Meanwhile, cut olives into
little pieces for eyes. Dot the ghosts and
serve.

DIRECTIONS
1. Using a Halloween themed cookie
cutter, take four slices of the bread and
cut out the centers.
2. Heat butter in a griddle or skillet over
medium heat.
3. Cook the cut side pieces of bread and
the whole pieces of bread in the saute
pan for 3 minutes. Flip the whole piece

Skunk Costume: For the distinctive tail, stuff a black sock, adding in a piece
of craft wire to help it hold its shape. Using a glue gun, stick the tail to the back
of a black hoodie (use a hand-me-down or inexpensive one). Then hot glue
thin white boas from the top of the hoodie, down the back and over and under
the tail. Cut two ears out of black stiffened felt and glue onto the hood. For the
tummy, cut an oval out of white felt. Glue one half to one side of the zipper, and
use Velcro to attach the other side (so you can still access the zipper).
Cow Costume: Cut out four
egg cups from an egg carton,
apply pink acrylic paint and
then hot glue them onto an
oval cut from pink felt. Hot glue
your udder onto the front of a
white shirt. Next, cut random
shapes out of black felt and hot
glue onto white pants, shirt and
hat. To make ears, cut rounded
diamond shapes out of black and
pink felt; pinch the bottom of the
diamonds and stick onto the hat
with hot glue. Attach a tiny bit of
fake fur to the top of the hat.
Grapes: Cut out a
crown from green Bristol
board and embellish with
paper leaves made out
of construction paper.
Hand stitch the balloons
to the outfit by threading
the needle through the
knot of each balloon.
Use a face paint pencil to
complete the look.
Bunny Costume: Cut out two layers of felt for each ear, plus an
accent piece for the inner ear. Glue each of the layers together. Loop the
bottom edge of each ear around the headband and hot glue in place.
Make a tail using a pom-pom and attach it with a needle and thread.

Walk Safely
. Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.
. Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you
cross.
. Put electronic devices down and keep heads up and walk, don’t run,
across the street.
. Teach children to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front
of them.
. Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing
traffic as far to the left as possible. Children should walk on direct routes
with the fewest street crossings.
. Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to never
dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.
Trick or Treat with an Adult
. Children under the age of 12 should not be alone at night without adult
supervision. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision,
they should stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in
groups.
Keep Costumes Both Creative and Safe
. Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and if
possible, choose light colors.
. Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks,
which can obstruct a child’s vision.
. Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen
by drivers.
. When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips
and falls.
Drive Extra Safely on Halloween
. Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods.
Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.
. Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on
curbs.
. Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully.
. Eliminate any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the
road and your surroundings.
. Drive slowly, anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic and turn your headlights
on earlier in the day to spot children from greater distances.
. Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM so be especially
alert for kids during those hours.
