THE TINY CHAPEL

PHOTOS © KAREN EDWARDS

The Tiny Chapel in the Kanimbla Valley

offers a quiet retreat for those who appreciate

simplicity and thoughtful design and is

surrounded by farmland. Here:

w3w.co/taint.wading.unbearably

The chapel is small, with a minimalist timber

structure that is not affiliated with any

particular denomination. It serves as a place

for quiet reflection, small ceremonies, or a

pause during a day of exploring the region.

Many who visit mention the sense of calm

that settles in as you step inside.

It was created by Sherry Weller, inspired by

the many tiny roadside churches she saw

along highways in the USA for weary

travellers to stop and rest.

It was built by Rob Wade, Ross Grassick,

Vicki Wilson and Helen Bonica.

The chapel is accessible via a short drive

from Blackheath and is often used for

elopements and small gatherings, so check

ahead if you want to ensure privacy.

HISTORIC SNAPSHOT

DEATH IN THE MEGALONG VALLEY

Patrick McAveney was murdered in the Megalong Valley by his wife Ann on 28th

February 1861, he was 69 years old. The deposition was taken by Edmund Barton, the

man who would become our first Prime Minister, who at this time, as a lowly circuit judge,

was just starting out in his legal career.

In her confession, she said: "I killed Patrick McAveney with a tomahawk. I struck him with

a tomahawk across the head in bed whilst he was sleeping. I struck him two blows whilst

in bed. The blankets were round his head. After striking him with the tomahawk I went out

of the house.

When I returned I found him sitting in a chair by the fire. I struck him again and again, five

or six blows. I put all the cuts on his head with the tomahawk. I struck him with a stick on

the head. After killing my husband I sat by the fire until I was sure he was dead."

Ann was tried at the Bathurst Circuit Court on 25th April 1873, found guilty of willful

murder and sentenced to death. This sentence was commuted to life imprisonment and

she died on 28th September 1883, of natural causes, in the infirmary of Darlinghurst

Gaol, Sydney.

He is buried in Hartley Cemetary.

Not all Omelettes are equal

At Café Lurline, Chef Jackie takes the classic omelette and adds a touch of magic, folding fresh eggs into a

smooth half-moon that’s cooked just right.

Choose your favourite style — Plain, Cheese, Spanish or White, each with its own character and flavour.

Every omelette is served with a side of sourdough, roasted cherry tomatoes and crisp garden greens. To

finish, they add a spoonful of our house-made chilli hollandaise. It’s a small touch that brings gentle heat and a

lift of flavour, making the omelette a café favourite.

OPEN: Wed - Mon 8:00am - 4:00pm

167 Lurline Street, Katoomba

TIP: Chef Jackie said, "If you're cooking at home, the best heat level to cook an omelette for the ideal texture

is medium to medium-low heat. Cooking on medium heat allows the eggs to set gently without becoming tough

or crispy, resulting in a silky, tender omelette.”

Dog Off-Leash in the Blue

Mountains:

A Guide to Responsible Ownership

The Blue Mountains, with its stunning landscapes, also boasts 14 council dog off-leash areas,

providing a haven for our furry friends. However, with this privilege comes responsibility, as

the Blue Mountains City Council stresses the importance of responsible dog ownership.

Companion Animals Act Regulations

Under the Companion Animals Act, dogs in public places must be under effective control.

This means a competent person must have an adequate leash attached to the dog. Even in

designated off-leash areas, owners are reminded of their responsibility to maintain control

over their dogs.

Council's Framework for Dog Management

Acting within a State Government framework, the Council enforces regulations for managing

dogs in public spaces. Council Rangers are authorized to issue fines ranging from $330 to

$1760 for dangerous or menacing dogs not under effective control.

Legal Responsibilities of Dog Owners

Dog owners need to be aware of their legal responsibilities. If a dog causes harm to another

animal or person, the owner is held accountable. Responsible ownership is not just a

courtesy; it's a legal obligation.

Dog Off-Leash Etiquette

Enjoying the dog off-leash areas comes with specific conditions:

Obeying designated hours of use.

Immediate removal of any aggressive dogs.

Ensuring effective control over dogs.

Proper disposal of dog waste in provided bins.

Additional Guidelines

Responsible dog ownership extends beyond the basics. Owners must prevent damage

caused by their dogs, supervise children, and ensure vaccinations are up-to-date. These

guidelines contribute to a positive experience for all users of off-leash areas.

Common Violations and Complaints

Unfortunately, complaints about anti-social behavior from dogs in public spaces have

increased. Aggressive dogs, neglectful owners, and other violations impact the quality of

these areas. It's crucial for the community to report such incidents for prompt action.

In conclusion, responsible dog ownership is imperative to maintain the beauty and

functionality of dog off-leash areas. Use the links below for more information.
