10TH INTERNATIONAL
MOBILE INNOVATION SCREENING
AND SMARTPHONE FILM FESTIVAL
NOVEMBER 12 - 14 2021
10TH INTERNATIONAL MOBILE INNOVATION SCREENING
AND SMARTPHONE FILM FESTIVAL
MINA X is our tenth year of the International Mobile Innovation Screening and
Smartphone Film Festival.
The MINA network started in 2011 in New Zealand, Aotearoa, and thus MINA was called Mobile Innovation Network
Aotearoa. After four great years in Aotearoa in Wellington (2011 and 2012) and Auckland (2013 and 2014) MINA moved
to Melbourne, Australia and became the Mobile Innovation Network Australasia.
After a short time, we decided to change MINA to Mobile Innovation Network and Association, so we could include more
diverse organization, such as NGOs and community groups and further develop links for professionals and rookie
smartphone filmmakers as we have done in the past.
At the same time, we were with our vision on the right track as we then had screenings in Ningbo, China in the following
years.
Even the COVID-19 pandemic could not press the pause button to MINA, and we are presenting this year's program online
and as a virtual event. The Containing COVID-19 screening program shows how mobile media and smartphone filmmaking
can get one through difficult times, build resilience and provides a positive outlook through creativity. During lockdowns
it is even more important to stay connected. MINA connects people across time zones and countries through storytelling.
The other pressing issue, of course, is the climate crisis. Our response, inspired by the #Nucleus transmedia project
(www.goethe.de/nucleus), which was conducted in collaboration with the Goethe Institute before the pandemic, was to
continue with the #EcoSmartphoneFilms program. The 2021 program is co-curated with Gerda Cammaer. The
#EcoSmartphoneFilms highlight how we can create a more holistic understanding with our environment and an innovative
planet. While smartphones might not be the most ecological tool, it is the most accessible camera and storytelling device.
This means every community member can participate in the conversations that are important to them.
This year we also present the New Voices program again, as in the last years, it is bold, creative, outstanding and pushes
the envelope of smartphone filmmaking.
And of course, the 10th International Mobile Innovation Screening program showcases the latest trends in creative mobile
media and experimental smartphone filmmaking.
While MINA took different forms and formats over the last 10 years. It started as a three-day long festival (see MINA 2011
program online www.mina.pro/screenings) and even screened mobile feature films in its premier edition, we decided to
focus to short films in the following years. In the last two years we introduced feature films with Blue Moon and this year
very honoured to have One Punch.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world: indeed, it is the
only thing that ever has.“ (Margaret Mead)
The tenth edition of MINA is presenting a special program titled #EcoSmartphoneFilms, a showcase of contemporary
mobile film production about environmental protection and ecology in all its aspects. It is an eclectic collection of short
international environmentally themed films from all over the world made on smartphones, pocket cameras, laptops and
Instagram.
The films show the planet’s beauty as well as the various local, regional and global environmental challenges we are
facing. By using a variety of creative solutions that illustrate the power of mobile film, they help to raise awareness
about environmental topics from around the globe and make us aware of the role mobile media can play in this.
In the spirit of Margaret Mead’s statement that we should “never doubt that a small group pf thoughtful, committed
citizens can change the world” with this special #EcoSmartphoneFilms program we hope inspire a deeper critical
understanding of ecological issues and strengthen our commitment as both filmmakers and curators to inspire future
generations to go mobile and stay sustainable.

I tended my senses and they were there,
I stopped to contemplate and they were there,
I opened my eyes and they were there,
I woke up and they were there,
I paid attention and they were there.
So I wanted to take off my sandals,
as not to hurt them with my walk.

Mikmaw filmmaker Naomi Condo, member of Gesgapegiag First Nation used the
circular frame as a device to connect the past and the present. Her collaborator Craig
Commanda, an Anishnabe musician and filmmaker from Kitigan Zibi First Nation,
composed original music for the piece. In their finished film, a young woman begins
her day with a smudging ceremony to honour her great grandparents and then asks
a series of questions about what might have been different if her ancestors had been
allowed to perform these ceremonies rather than have them suppressed.

PLONGEONS is an augmented reality project designed from historic situations
deflected from their real context. At first glance, isolated characters seem to plunge
willingly in an environment not quite reassuring yet not specifically hostile, only
totally empty. Solid, pure and intact, the monochrome backgrounds echo the blue and
green screens used for cinematographic special effects inlay.
