We’ve had a very busy summer at Pulp Design Studios,
with lots of projects, big announcements, a new
division, and a wickedly fun showhouse. It’s been a
whirlwind, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.
In this issue of ICON, we’re revealing our new Pulp Properties -
a division that will focus on commercial real estate and unique
shoppable vacation homes. Read on to learn more about our first
two properties in Dallas and in Palm Springs. We’re thrilled to
embark on this exciting new venture!
We’re also giving you a sneak peek of the loft we designed for the
amazing Kips Bay Dallas Show House, titled “The Wise & The
Wicked”, with a glimpse into the inspiration for our design. Stay
tuned for an in-depth look at the finished designs in the Kips Bay
Special ICON edition coming soon.
And, of course, this edition of ICON also includes our latest
residential projects, unique design ideas, the trends we’re seeing
on the horizon, playlists, cocktails, and our own personal shopping
lists for fall.

The design duo of Pulp Design Studios created their Kips Bay Dallas
Show House space for women just like them – strong, smart, and
savvy. The rooms are an homage to a modern woman, a paradox
who is both wise about her business and also wickedly amusing in
her off time. She’s graceful and glam, playful and polished – and this loft
space reflects that duality of personal style. We’re giving you an exclusive
sneak peek of the space in ICON. Stay tuned for an in-depth look at the
finished designs and behind-the-scenes looks!

and delight her.
The cosmopolitan office area is a creative space
where deals are made and contracts are signed. It’s refined but
with a distinct personality, as defined by the asymmetricaldesk,fabulous art,
and gorgeous upholstered stools and chaise. This is a woman in charge,
who knows how to get things done. Behind the drapery to the right
is a hidden office nook, perfect for break time or for creative inspiration.
To the left, the custom cabinetry hides a passageway
to the lounge and a chic bathroom.

and she isn’t afraid of more adventurous decor
for her personal space.

raise funds for the Kips Bay Boys & Girls
Club in New York. The Dallas home also
raised funds for Dwell with Dignity, a
favorite Pulp charity.

Announcing Pulp Properties
Pulp Design Studios is expanding into real estate development and experiential hospitality concepts!
Pulp Design Studios is once again forging
a cutting-edge path with an expansion into
real estate development and the experiential
hospitality market.
The newly formed Pulp Properties now
includes a multi-unit commercial space in
the Oak Cliff neighborhood in Dallas, and a
stunning midcentury modern house in Palm
Springs’ Racquet Club Estates. Both properties
will offer a unique experience that flips the
narrative on what commercial and hospitality
design will be in the future. The spaces will
also serve as incubators for our innovative and
unique design concepts and products.
The Palm Springs property is an iconic Meiselman house with sweeping views of the San Jacinto Mountains. It will serve as both a
shoppable vacation rental and a hub for Pulp’s team to experiment with designs that reimagine how people live in and interact with
their interior spaces. The estimated launch date for the rental is the beginning of 2022.
This is a bigger vision for Pulp, giving us space
to experiment with how people will want to
work and vacation in the future. We’re always
looking for ways to move beyond expected
design ideas and this is a great way for us to
allow others to experience our new approach
for interiors and lifestyles.
We love an adventure and to take unexpected
detours in our business. We knew that we
wanted to expand beyond residential design
and to try something totally novel and original.
There will definitely be more properties added
to our portfolio in the future, so stay tuned!
The Dallas commercial space in Oak Cliff will incorporate Pulp’s design office as well as a range of woman-owned businesses, including
photographers, fashion designers, vintage retail, and an art studio/retail space for children and adults.

SETTING THE TABLE
We’re entering the entertaining season again and the Pulp team is looking forward
(fingers crossed) to hosting family and friends again. Here, co-founder Beth Dotolo
gives her favorite tips for setting a memorable table for those special events.
Dream a Theme
The theme doesn’t have to be overt,
but having details that are repeated
through the tabletop will help tie
things together. Here that includes
the gold snakes on the small silver
bowls, the snakeskin patterned
napkins, and the croc-embossed
placemats.

Fresh Is Best
Fresh flowers on the table add a bit of color and a lot of natural design. You can design a central arrangement or
even small vases with tiny blooms. Whatever style you choose, just be sure you have a fresh selection.

SETTING THE TABLE
Palette Cleanser
When a room already has a lot of color and pattern in
its decor, try a neutral palette for your tabletop. That
allows for a much more sophisticated look that won’t
fight for attention with the rest of the space.
Talking Tapers
Beth loves using tapers on a
table to set a mood. The taller
candles and holders allow guests
to see each other across the table
without a large obstructions,
but they also cast a lovely glow
on the scene.
Lovely Linens
The Pulp team will often create bespoke
table linens for their events
and photoshoots. It’s key to have
linens that provide texture and
personality to the table, like these
fabulous animal-skin patterned
placemats and napkins.
Drink Up
Beth loves to search out unique
tableware, especially glasses.

Designing
with INTENT
The key to a Pulp home is creating a space that's as purposeful as it is personal.
We love to create interiors that are unique to our clients, while remaining functional
to their everyday lives. Here are some ideas to help you determine what you love and
how to maximize the function of each special moment in your space.
READING NOOK
We have a lot of clients who love to
read, so it’s important to create a
space just for their favorite pastime.
For some, that could be a private
library. And for others it may be a
corner or window seat that’s just for
them. The key is to make it special by
including extra comfortable seating,
a really good task light, and shelves
nearby. It should be a space that you
want to return to over and over again.
QUIET CONTEMPLATION
If you have a room with a view - maximize that moment! There is no rule book that says your chairs have to
face a specific direction. The layout of your furniture should work the way you need it to, and that includes
a unique viewpoint like the one above. With a vista like that, we wanted to create a quiet spot where our
clients can unwind and destress after a long day.

DO WHAT YOU LOVE
If you and your family love board games and regularly plan
game nights, then you should definitely have a space set
aside just for that. Must-haves include great seating, a
central table, and plenty of storage that will hide away board
games until the next fun night. Or if you’re into music, showcase
those instruments as part of the decor. Whatever you
and your family love to do, create a corner or a room just for
that. Not only does it make your home feel like it’s made just
for you, but it also shows your guests what you’re into.
FRAME IT
If art is special to you, then it should definitely
be displayed. We found a fantastic photo that
our client’s father took many years ago and
it became a focal point in their stairwell. We
also worked with a family of artists to ensure
that their own art, as well as collections from
their travels and family heirlooms, were
featured throughout the their home. Original
art is one of the best ways to set your home’s
decor apart and to show your personality. You
can frame anything that’s important to you -
documents, maps, collectibles, and more!

THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT
It’s so important to be sure kids have a space they can call their own. From the tiniest to the teenagers, we
like to design rooms that showcase what they love the most. In the room below, we gave a young guy his
dream bedroom by creating wallpaper from the schematics of his favorite team’s stadium. Think out of the
box to create those special moments for your kids.
BONUS SPACES
Every home has that awkward space or bonus areas - don’t let them go to waste! We’ve
created chic home bars in pass-through areas, a wine cave in an extra closet, and a
fantastic loft area in an attic. We love to dream up great ways to take advantage of
every square inch of space in our clients’ homes.

6 tips for
LAYERING ART
The Pulp team loves to layer art in the interiors we design, so we have 6 expert tips
to help you showcase your favorite pieces. And we’re heading into co-founder
Carolina Gentry’s home to show you exactly how it’s done!
2Consider Scale
Scale is something we talk about for
every aspect of interior design, but
it’s critically important when choosing
and displaying art. In the gorgeously
layered vignette that Carolina
created here, you can see that there
is an oversized framed piece, then a
medium one, and finally a smaller one.
Then a tall sculpture and a tiny piece
of pottery. It gives the eye a focal
point, but allows it to travel to take it
all in. Vary the scale of what you layer
together and you’ll always succeed.

1Mix Your Media
In your displays of art, be sure to mix things up. Use sculpture with drawings, found
objects with paintings, or pottery with photography. It makes for a more textural and
unique showcase – one with a lot of personality! You can see how Carolina makes a
statement all her own with a unique combination of art. It tells a story of who she is
and what she loves!
3Balance & Symmetry
Two more important concepts in design
are balance and symmetry. You want a
vignette to be harmonious. Put too many
things on one side and it won’t have that
polished look you’re going for. Too many
things layered in the center and not
enough left or right, and the symmetry
will be completely off. So, just as Carolina
is doing here, you’ll need to move things
around and then step back to look at the
grouping as a whole. You’ll feel it when
the balance is on point!

LAYERING ART
4
In the Frame
Framing is key to getting a layered look right,
and there are two ways to think about your
frames. First, you could go with a wall or
display where every piece is in a similar frame,
like all black. Or, for more visual interest and
an eclectic look, you can mix things up. If you
go for the mix, think about varying the thickness
and design of the frame, too! So you can
use a thicker gold frame, like the one Carolina
is carrying, and pair it with a thinner black
frame like the one on the credenza.
5Lean Into It
One common mistake that people make is to insist on
hanging everything that is in a frame. It’s impossible
to layer art that way! We like to lean some pieces,
especially on mantels and table surfaces, as you can
see Carolina doing here. That creates the depth and
interest that makes all the difference!
6
Art in Every Room
This is a super-important tip: You can and should use art in every single room. Yes, even
the bathroom and the kitchen. These are great rooms for showcasing smaller framed
pieces, photography, or fun found objects. We once hung a faux manhole cover in a client’s
bathroom that had Sewer stamped across it. It was witty and our clients loved it! So think
out of the box when selecting art for these rooms.

Just as we may not be able to remember how to dress in anything other than yoga pants, we need to
get back into our welcoming ways for guests. To make it easier, we’ve got 6 tips for creating a gorgeous
guest bathroom that your family and friends will love!
Fresh Flowers
Placing newly-cut flowers in a guest bath
allows you to bring in a breath of fresh air.
Not only do flowers add color, but they
also lift people’s spirits and offer a bit of
sweet fragrance. A vase of blooms really
shows that you care about your guests.
High-Quality Towels
Fabulous Toiletries
There’s nothing better than a soft hand towel or
a luxe bath sheet in the bathroom, so be sure to
offer the very best linens you can afford.
In the bath here, we used our own Pulp
hand towels to provide visual interest
and a soft way to dry your hands.
Of course we’re all still washing our hands every chance we get, so having great smelling soaps
and lotions are key for a guest bath. We love the incredible scents from Aesop, an Australian-based
company that specializes in vegan formulas and sustainable practices. They also offer candles,
fragrance sprays, and drops for keeping the bathroom smelling as good as it looks.

Fluffy Robes
If your guests are spending the night, the perfect addition for
the guest bath is a luxe and fluffy robe. It’s an extra special
touch that your friends and family will love. Consider adding a
monogram or your own house logo. In the room here, we had
our Pulp Icon logo stitched onto a soft white robe.
Make Them Smile
We like to add cheeky themes to
guest bathrooms, to make them a little
whimsical and to inspire guests to smile.
The towel here may not be for everyone,
but in the rooms where we’ve placed
them, we always hear laughter as our
guests discover the saying.
Reflect On It
Give your guests a fantastic mirror and good lighting.
That allows them to present their best face to the world!

of moments and vignettes in your own home!
BETH’S TIPS
Try the “eagle’s view” when shooting an
entertaining shot. That’s a far-above shot that
looks fantastic and covers a lot of ground.
Show your personality! Showcase fun items in your
home that give a unique insight into who you are.
Shoot straight onto the vignette. If you
take the shot absolutely centered, with no
skew, you’ll get the perfect “hero shot!”
Life is messy, so don’t try to make
every shot look perfect. You live in
your house - let it look lived-in.
Shoot lower than you think you should. A perspective
from your hip level will give you a great angle for a
full-room shot.
Be cheeky! Show your wit and have a little fun,
especially when you bring in holiday decor.

Personal details in a photograph are like a tiny
snapshot into who you are and what you like. So be
sure you show your personality.
If you’re taking photos of food, include serveware,
utensils, and napkins. They add more ‘life” to the
photo!
Pets are always great in a shot! Show off your fur
babies and you’ll also give a lot of life to your shot.
Fresh flowers are key! They not only add color, but
they give your photos a natural and organic look.
You don’t always have to shoot full-room shots. A
close-up angle lets people see what’s really in your
home.
Pattern and color will attract more attention in a
photograph. Be sure your rooms have patterns that
you love, in rugs, wallpaper, art, and more.

project, the Pulp team has been lucky to work with clients who love color and pattern, and are
willing to let us push the creative edge for them in every room. So we’ve created a house full of

We love seeing how our designer friends use our

JEN TALBOT created a fabulous hideaway
in her Hyde Park project, using stunning
swathes of the Hidalgo pattern from Pulp’s

counters. And go for more unique looks with light fixtures, paint colors, barstools, and other
items that can be easily changed out when you’re ready to sell.

SHAKE it UP
The perfect warm up for cool fall nights
The Hot Toddy has been a cold-weather
staple for decades. Hailing from Scotland,
this cocktail is believed to cure what ails
you…literally. But all we know is that it is a
delicious antidote to chilly weather!
INGREDIENTS
2 T of honey
1 Cup of hot water
6 T of bourbon
2 - 3 x 1/2” strips lemon peel
2 Cinnamon sticks
EQUIPMENT
Measuring cup
Spoon
Kettle
Toddy Glass
THE HONEY-BOURBON TODDY
INSTRUCTIONS
Stir honey and water in a 2-cup
measuring cup until honey dissolves.
Add Bourbon
Divide between 2 Toddy Glasses.
Twist a strip of lemon peel over each
drink, then add to glass.
Stir each with a cinnamon stick and serve
