Issue FOUR 2021
As we roll into autumn it would be
interesting to find out if the blinds
industry is being affected by the lack
of lorry drivers and staff in general.
Hopefully this a short term issue, but
there is also the knock on effect of
inflation in all sectors of the economy,
which is something we do not need
as we continue to manage the
pandemic and the consequences that
it has had on our lives.
I have also noticed that a number
of shows in the industry are set to
take place in the coming months,
another sign that we are getting back
to normal. This is great news, but let’s
still stay safe out there!
Apollo Blinds win in the Best
Franchise Awards 2021
Apollo Blinds is the winner of the Continuous
Improvement category of the Best Franchise Awards 2021
for smashing its own record for the satisfaction levels of its
franchisees.
The company – which it says is Britain’s
biggest window blinds franchise – picked up
the accolade after conducting its third annual
Franchise Satisfaction Benchmark for 2021. It
saw the overall satisfaction score from its 40-
strong network of franchisees increase by
9% on the previous year, taking its score to
76%.
Apollo Blinds commissioned WorkBuzz to
carry out the annual survey for the third
year in a row and built on its increase of 18%
for 2020 – as it sees clear, continued
progression for the business.
Matt Thomas, Apollo Blinds’ business
development director, is delighted with the
award and the score of the benchmark
report and says the management team will
use the findings from the report as a
platform to aim for an even higher overall
score next year.
“It’s so important that we keep listening to
what our franchisees have to say so that we
can keep improving the service and support
we offer to them as part of a partnership
approach,” he said.
“The WorkBuzz Franchise Satisfaction
Benchmark is vital to the performance and
growth of our network, as it looks at how
the franchise is performing through the eyes
of our franchisees.
“The report is a brilliant benchmark for
Apollo Blinds and highlights the progress that
the management team and the franchisees
have made together over the last couple of
years.
“There are some striking figures – such as
the fact that 100% of our franchisees said
they would renew their franchise
agreements, and more than 70% expected
to see their overall profitability improve over
the next 12 months. Also, 100% said they
were happy with the initial support and
training they received from Apollo Blinds
when they joined the network.”
The increase in the satisfaction score is all
the more remarkable after a difficult year
where, like a lot of other businesses, Apollo
Blinds endured challenging trading conditions
due to the global pandemic. However, Apollo
Blinds has actually seen record sales of its
blinds, shutters, awnings and curtains since
March 2020, fuelled by the UK boom in
home improvements.
Mr Thomas also says that one of the key
factors that has underpinned the increase in
general satisfaction levels is the company’s
continued investment in bringing new
products to market – enabling Apollo Blinds
franchisees to have the widest collection of
blinds, shutters, awnings and curtains in the
UK.
The Franchise Satisfaction Benchmark
covered six key areas: training & support,
leadership, franchise system, value & rewards,
culture & relationships, and general
satisfaction. Two headline figures that stood
out from the report include a score of 85%
satisfaction with the leadership of the
business – with trust and confidence being
two important factors expressed by
franchisees. The other was the 84% general
satisfaction score, where franchisees said
they were proud of the brand, remarked
that the Apollo Blinds management team go
the extra mile, and said they would
recommend the franchise opportunity to
others who are looking to set up and run
their own franchise businesses.
Mr Thomas concluded: “The Franchise
Satisfaction Benchmark for 2021 enables us
to keep setting the highest standards for the
business, and this makes it an increasingly
attractive proposition to prospective
franchisees.”
NEWS IN BRIEF
Connected home specialist, Somfy, has
recently announced the appointment of
Elliot Webb as key account manager
overseeing the company’s UK and
Northern Ireland operations. Elliot joins
the senior management team during a
crucial period of growth and
opportunity at Somfy, as individuals and
businesses focus their attention on
optimising their home and workspaces
due to the pandemic.
Elliot will manage and oversee Somfy’s
interest in the residential and industrial
garage doors, implementing new sales
strategies while directly supporting key
customers within the UK and NI.
Elliot has worked with Somfy since
2018, when he was appointed as
regional sales manager in the southwest
for interior window coverings. During his
tenure as regional sales manager, Elliot
managed a variety of small to mediumsized
business customers spanning
manufacturers and retailers. Prior to
joining Somfy, Elliot worked his way up
the ranks at car rental service,
Enterprise, starting as a trainee manager
as part of a graduate scheme before
eventually managing one of the firm’s
largest branches in the south of England.
Commenting on his new appointment,
Elliot said: “I made the decision to move
to Somfy in 2018 because it seemed like
a business that would allow me to grow
personally and professionally, and that’s
certainly been the case. The residential
access market is ripe for automation and
motorisation, both of which add endless
value in terms of convenience and
security to customers, and I’m thrilled to
play a key role in getting that technology
out there to manufacturers and
retailers.”
MARKETING
Expanding its partner network
Blindmatrix has
seen a period of
growth since 2020
2020 was an insanely challenging year for us
all. During the beginning of the pandemic
Blindmatrix, like most business, saw an
unprecedented contraction in its monthly sales.
After the initial shock of the onset of the Covid
crisis, Blindmatrix began to drive investments into
its staff and back office systems, paving the way for
innovations in its products and services and
prompting a complete business re-brand.
Towards the end of 2020 it became clear that
the early investments were paying off with
monthly growth in revenues returning to near precovid
levels. 2021 has continued the trend and the
future has never looked more promising.
Blindmatrix has always aspired to lead the UK
blinds, curtains, shutters and awnings industry
through innovation by creating solutions that work
for everyone. Like any business, Blindmatrix has
always known that it's customers are at the heart
of its success but in early 2021 the company's
mission became ever clearer. It needed to add
deeper value by working more broadly with the
wider industry.
The company's core mission is to make
BlindMatrix Software indispensable to people’s
lives by creating software and a community which
helps people and businesses to thrive.
This new clarity prompted the business to
accelerate its strategy of working in partnership
with all Trade suppliers throughout the UK to
innovate and implement solutions that add value
throughout the supply chain.
The Blindmatrix partner network is still a work
in progress but one part of this work sees the
company strengthening its relationships with major
suppliers who do not use Blindmatrix, through the
development of EDI solutions so Blindmatrix users
can send and receive orders and invoices with the
click of a button, without duplicating work.
The other major part of this work is adding
value to its own customers who supply made-tomeasure
products and wholesale products to the
UK trade. It's achieving this by offering reduced
cost products and services to its customer's
customers.
In short, if you are a trade supplier using a
Blindmatrix solution, your customers can benefit
from a much improved offer only possible because
you are a customer and user of Blindmatrix; a
defacto member of the blindmatrix partnership
network.
So what's the benefit? Your customers can get
the Survey Solution at a reduced monthly rate
with your products already setup. They can
generate quotes from their mobile devices, send
you orders directly with the click of a button,
without using your online ordering portal or
sending orders by email or fax.
This will add value to you and your customer
by saving hundreds of hours and thousands of
pounds admin costs each year. It'll also help
Blindmatrix to continue to evolve their solutions
so they work seamlessly from business to
business.
Blindmatrix take care of the setup and
onboarding. All you need to do is let your
customers know they can benefit from this offer
and blindmatrix will do the rest.
Positive prospects
for the R+T Alliance
Preparations are
already underway
for the restart of
the trade fair
network for the
global sun shading
industries
The trade fair landscape is springing back to
life again. After more than one year without
any live events in Germany and Europe, the
preparations for the trade fair restart at Messe
Stuttgart are in full swing. This also applies to the
trade fairs in the R+T Alliance, the trade fair
network for the sun shading and door/gate
industries. "We are delighted that we can finally
stage trade fairs again," said Roland Bleinroth,
president of Messe Stuttgart. "The last months
proved that personal meetings are essential and
irreplaceable. Trade fairs will therefore remain an
important and permanent economic factor."
The R+T Alliance currently comprises six trade
Hybrid event concept for
The world's leading trade fair for roller shutters,
doors/gates and sun shading systems will take place
again at Messe Stuttgart from 21 to 25 February
2022. Over 700 national and international
exhibitors, including the most important market
leaders in the industry, have already confirmed that
they will be attending R+T 2022. "The preparations
are in full swing and we are looking forward to
finally meet our visitors and exhibitors in person
again after the successful implementation of R+T
digital in February 2021," said Sebastian Schmid,
department director technology at Messe
Stuttgart. "We are intending to implement a hybrid
event concept, i.e. a trade fair with a digital
extension, for the forthcoming edition of R+T. We
therefore want to make it possible for all visitors,
irrespective of any travel restrictions, to take part
in R+T and include the knowledge acquired over
the last months in the new format. A large number
of hygiene measures will also be implemented onsite
in accordance with the 'safe expo concept' in
of all: OUTDOOR. AMBIENTE. LIVING. will
also be held during the following R+T from
21 to 25 February 2022. "Due to the
development of the pandemic and the
associated increase in the demands on
outdoor gastronomy, outdoor living
products have become even more
important. By presenting the range of these
solution systems in the special show, we
want to take account of the needs of the
industry," said Sebastian Schmid. Registration
Successful R+T Asia in
2021
The 16th edition of R+T Asia from 24 to
26 March 2021 was the first physical trade
fair in the R+T Alliance since the start of
the pandemic – and made an impressive
trade fair restart for the sun shading
systems and door/gate industries in Asia:
with over 42,000 visitors, 700 exhibitors on
a gross exhibition area of 68,000 square
metres, more than 20 on-site educational
and networking events, and the additional
hybrid programme of R+T Asia Connect,
this event also proved to be a total success.
The next R+T Asia will be held from 25
to 27 May 2022. Its venue has been
changed to the National Convention &
Exhibition Center (NECC) in Shanghai. "In
addition to an annual date guarantee with a
sufficient interval to R+T 2022, this
innovation will also lead to growth: larger
halls represent the ideal basis for future
expansion in terms of the exhibition area
and the number of exhibitors," said Roland
Bleinroth. The registration phase for R+T
Asia 2022 has started successfully and the
first national and international exhibitors
have already confirmed their stand positions.
New date for R+T
Turkey
There is a new date for R+T Turkey: the
highly regarded industry meeting point will
open its doors again at the Istanbul
Exhibition Center CNR Expo from 20 to 22
October 2022. Istanbul and Turkey as a hub
between Europe and Asia are perfect as a
trade fair venue. Border crossings to eight
countries and visa-free access facilitate the
flow of goods and visitors from Europe,
Eastern Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
Since internationality is very important
for R+T Turkey, the new date will create
planning security for everyone involved.
"Finally, there is light at the end of the tunnel
and the sun is shining more brightly again
for the European and Asian market.
However, it is important for us that our
event can continue to sparkle just like in the
past. We therefore decided with our
exhibitors and partners to move the date of
R+T Turkey from September 2021 to
October 2022," said Ufuk Altntop,
managing director of Messe Stuttgart Ares.
"We are now really looking forward to
opening our doors again to all our visitors in
Istanbul at R+T Turkey 2022 for the fifth
time." For more information about the
event, visit: www.rt-turkey.com.
Première of APAExpo by
R+T
APAExpo by R+T will be held for the
first time at Feria Barcelona in Spain from 5
to 7 October 2022. The new trade fair is
being staged in cooperation with the
Spanish Association of Automatic Door
Manufacturers (APA). In the past the
International Trade Fair for Automatic
Doors/Gates took place under the name of
FIPA – most recently in Valencia in 2019
with over 100 exhibitors and 3,500 trade
visitors. APAExpo by R+T will take place in
Barcelona every three years and will now
also open up other markets for R+T, e.g.
North Africa and Latin America. "We are
delighted that the cooperation and
interaction with Messe Stuttgart will further
strengthen our position as an international
trade fair for automatic doors/gates on the
market," said Ricardo Ricart, general
secretary of the APA and general manager
of the Spanish publishing house "PA
ediciones" about the joint project. It will be
possible to register for APAExpo by R+T
2022 from autumn 2021 onwards. All the
information about the trade fair can be
Sun Shading Expo North
America in 2022
Sun Shading Expo will not be held in
2021 as a separate trade fair, but will instead
contribute its expertise in internal and
external sun shading systems to the
conference programme at IFAI Expo 2021
in the form of expert talks and open
discussions. IFAI Expo, the leading trade fair
for special fabrics and technical textiles will
celebrate its 100th in-person anniversary in
Nashville, Tennessee, from 2 to 4 November
2021. The concept for cooperation with
Messe Stuttgart will also be presented live
at IFAI Expo 2021. "A large number of
international R+T exhibitors have already
shown their interest in the North American
market. In our capacity as a professional
trade fair organiser, our objective is to offer
all participants planning security in particular
along with a high-quality and successful
presentation platform. After analysing the
currently valid general conditions and in
view of the long-term success of the new
trade fair brand, we decided to stage Sun
Shading Expo North America as a colocation
to IFAI Expo 2022," said Roland
Bleinroth, president of Messe Stuttgart.
The première of Sun Shading Expo
North America will therefore be held from
12 to 14 October 2022 in parallel with IFAI
Expo in Charlotte, North Carolina. Industrial
Fabrics Association International (IFAI) CEO
and President Steve Schiffman added: "We
are looking forward to long-term
collaboration between IFAI Expo and Sun
Shading Expo North America. Our 100th
Anniversary of IFAI Expo is the ideal
framework to celebrate this partnership
and start the development of a strong
cross-industry network between the
customers of both events." The planned
conference programme of Sun Shading
Expo during IFAI Expo 2021 will be
announced shortly. Further information is
MOTORISATION
Smart in a minute
Coulisse now has a
range of motors
and controls for
any situation
The MotionBlinds line from Coulisse provides
a complete range of cable-free and wired
motors and controls that are designed for
easy assembly, installation, and ease-of-use for all
types of window coverings in residential,
commercial and hospitality. The principles of
simplicity and connectivity, the main drivers behind
MotionBlinds, have resulted in a range of new
innovations within the range.
Smart in a minute
The battery-powered motors developed for
various types of window coverings feature
Bluetooth technology. This allows the window
coverings to be made smart in a minute, simply by
installing them cable-free and scanning a setup
code with your smartphone. Then, the blinds can
be controlled by app and automated with timers,
making them open and close automatically at
preset times.
Smart home compatible
With the addition of the MotionBlinds Wi-Fi
bridge, the blinds can also be controlled away from
home by smartphone and easily connected to
other devices in the smart home ecosystem, since
MotionBlinds works with smart assistants such as
Google, Alexa and SmartThings. This allows
MotionBlinds to be controlled by voice with smart
speakers.
Rechargeable with USB-C
Window coverings with MotionBlinds are
rechargeable with a standard USB-C cable. The
MOTORISATION
battery motors are developed in such a way
that the USB-C ports can be made easily
accessible. Recharging is required only once
or twice a year with average use.
Just a simple pull
Pull operation, a special feature of
MotionBlinds, is a valuable add-on to smart
controls since it requires nothing: no
connectivity, no smartphone, no remote
control. Just a simple manual pull
automatically sets the blinds in motion and
overrides smart automation. The pull
function can be used to program end limits
and favorite positions too, which is very
practical both in fabrication and at home.
A total solution
MotionBlinds is applicable to various
types of window coverings: roller and
double roller, honeycomb and pleated,
venetian, vertical, roman and curtains. The
range includes rechargeable battery motors
and wired motors, both available in low and
high voltages. A smart switch also makes
awnings and shutters with wired motors
compatible with MotionBlinds, allowing all
indoor and outdoor blinds to be controlled
with MotionBlinds technology.
Eve MotionBlinds
Part of the MotionBlinds concept is Eve
MotionBlinds, a series of cable-free motors
with Apple HomeKit technology, created in
collaboration with smart home specialist
Eve Systems, a leader in the development of
accessories for the Apple HomeKit
ecosystem. These are the benefits of Eve
MotionBlinds:
• Super easy setup simply by scanning the
HomeKit setup code, no gateaway or bridge
required
• Effortlessly set up schedules that put
the blinds on autopilot, independently of the
iPhone and home network
• Supports Bluetooth and Thread
• App and voice control with iPhone,
iPad, Apple Watch and HomePod
• Eve MotionBlinds interact with other
HomeKit accessories creating a smart and
safe ecosystem
• Local intelligence and direct
communication without cloud dependency
• No proprietary cloud, no registration,
no tracking
• Requires an iPhone or iPad with the
latest version of iOS/iPadOS 14
• Controlling Eve MotionBlinds
automatically and away from home requires
a HomePod or an Apple TV (4th generation
or later) as a home hub
The Eve MotionBlinds range will become
available soon, starting with a roller blind
motor.
Blinds & Shutters
found out
Cruze Roller Motors offer smart window
covering solutions that enhance everyday
motorised; the perfect, smart technologically led
home improvement allowing homeowners to filter
light and manage privacy at the touch of a button.
Installation and programming instructions can be
When developing Cruze motors, there was a
clear vision and focus to combine precision
engineering with simplicity and function for smarter
living. The battery powered motor has been
designed to fit industry standard 32mm or 40mm
roller tubes enabling easy installation without the
need to stock additional components for
manufacture. The retro fit option facilitates already
manufactured roller blinds to be motorised with
ease with the added benefits of quiet and smooth
operation.
Smart home integration is made simpler when
paired with a Somfy home integrated solution
hubs. The connectivity kit allows users to control
their blinds from a smart phone, whilst connecting
through Tahoma you can link other smart home
devices including voice assistants.
Elemental to the Cruze roller motor launch is its
competitive pricing. Installation, programming, and
operation of the blind is made simple with the
Cruze 4 channel RTS remote. A blind grouping
option enables users to control multiple blinds
simultaneously.
As technology continues to evolve, the Cruze
Motors programme will continue to develop
throughout 2022 offering a comprehensive
modern living window covering programme.
Cool running
Caribbean Blinds is
keeping homes cool
for summer
In February, external shading specialists
Caribbean Blinds delivered highly effective and
stylish shading solutions to ensure a family
home does not overheat this summer.
A Surrey based family were finding it hugely
challenging to prevent their south facing property
from overheating and undertook extensive
research on the most effective solutions to keep
their home cool. The main aims of the project
were to add outdoor roller blinds to the upstairs
and downstairs windows and an awning over the
patio doors that could provide both shade and
shelter without affecting the view out into their
garden.
Stuart Dantzic, managing director of Caribbean
Blinds, explained: “Our expert team installed
several of our Antiguan windproof outdoor roller
blinds, plus a Cuba awning, to the south facing
windows and patio area of this residential
property. The project, from initial contact to
completion, was just 2 months and we are thrilled
to have swiftly provided a sleek and effective
lifestyle solution for a family home prone to
overheating.”
Of key importance to the client was that the
design solution was fully integrated as an
extension of their home. Ease of use was also
essential and motorised remote control was a
must with each product operable individually as
well as a group for maximum flexibility.
Following a detailed site survey and initial
consultation, Caribbean Blinds recommended their
Antiguan external roller blinds for the windows.
These roller blinds not only encompass sleek
design but, zip locking technology built into the
side guides physically locks the fabric in place at
every position, rendering the blind windproof and
prevents any light shining between the edge. The
blind also acts as an insect screen. All fixings are
hidden and the full cassette headbox discreetly
provides a neat hideaway for the blind, ensuring a
seamless addition to the customer’s home.
For the patio doors, the Cuba awning was
suggested, the crème de la crème of the range. Its
contemporary, rectangular, flush-fitting full cassette
design appears as an integrated part of the façade
and neatly conceals the awning when retracted.
Concealed fixing brackets and screw-less ALU end
plates elegantly finish the awning off, whilst
optional LED lighting can be built onto the
underside of the cassette.
Once completed, a full demonstration and run
through was provided to the client and the end
result perfectly matched the customer’s brief and
provides the ideal environment to enjoy anything
the British weather brings and ensures they can
fully enjoy their home space both inside and out,
with family and friends.
Prize winning pergola
The "pergola
stretch" by
markilux has been
awarded the
Innovation Prize at
the "R+T digital"
trade fair
The "pergola model" developed by awning
expert markilux was able to impress with
its size and sophisticated technology during
the nomination of the innovation prize 2021 at
the International Trade Fair "R+T digital". For
example, the unique toothed drive belt of this
awning with folding awning cover has made it
possible to build impressive XXL awning sizes.
Pre-assembled component packages and the well
thought-through construction simplify installation
as well. For this reason, the jury awarded it a gold
certificate in the category "Outdoor".
Michael Gerling, director of R&D and
Production at markilux, as well as Sven Kröner,
head of R&D were able to follow the presentation
of the innovation prize live when took place on 22
February on the platform of the "R+T digital"
trade fair.
"We knew already that the "pergola stretch"
had been nominated. But to win a gold
certificate in the category 'Outdoor' really was
the cherry on the cake", enthused Mr Gerling. It
has confirmed once again the importance of this
markilux product idea. For years the "pergola
family" has been a good seller. The new "stretch"
version in the range is adding a new model
which makes even larger sizes possible and
therefore creates even more opportunity to
deck out patios and terraces with an awning
system.
Sven Kröner, who was part of the team that
developed this awning with folding cover
technology, explains: "The technology has been
deliberately designed to be able to cope with
very large areas. In a single unit it can already
cover almost 50 square metres. And that can be
multiplied a number of times, if several units are
joined together." Up to five awnings, side by side,
make it possible to cover a maximum area of
175 square metres. The use of waterproof and
highly flame-retardant fabrics means that the
system offers particularly effective protection
against both sun and rain to both the domestic
and the commercial client.
"In order to make such large dimensions in an
awning system possible, we have developed a
unique toothed drive belt mechanism. The force
required to open and close the system is
transferred exceptionally well via the lateral
guide tracks to the folded cover attached to
transverse carrying bars", Mr Kröner emphasizes.
Because of the pre-assembled component
packages and the way it has been designed, the
awning is very easy to install.
But in addition, the whole package of
accessories, which include an aluminium
coverboard, lighting options, heaters, vertical roller
blinds and screens, puts a clear focus on providing
comfort. "All the technical details make our
'pergola stretch' a highly innovative product which
will fulfil the demand for generously proportioned
awning systems and justify its place in the market",
Mr. Gerling believes. The gold innovation award
lends this model a particular stature and with the
"German Design Award 2021" is already the
second award this product has won.
AWNINGS
From good to great
Patio awnings:
Caribbean Blinds
explains how to
differentiate
between a good
and a great awning
More versatile than other external shading
systems including pergolas and canopies,
retractable patio awnings are a quick,
easy and affordable solution to transform any
outdoor space. A good patio awning will
ultimately provide shelter, block heat, diffuse light
and protect against UV rays, however, a great
awning will offer the user so much more.
Although an expert specification and
professional installation are key, it’s the attention to
detail that makes a great awning. The use of quality
fabrics, premium hardware finishes, British
manufactured parts and app-controlled operation
are just some of the elements that guarantee an
awning will stand the test of time.
Fabrics
All fabrics should be impregnated with a
suitable coating such as TEXGard which generates
a self-clean effect, deterring dirt and water from
the surface and preventing the growth of mould
and algae. For maximum durability, the fabric
should be woven from solution dyed acrylic fibres.
Dimensionally stable, they will not stretch, warp or
tear when under tension and as the dye is
permeated right through to the core of the yarn,
colours will stay true and will not fade over time.
Fabrics that are certified to UV standard 801
offer true protection levels against ultraviolet
radiation, with more premium materials offering a
minimum 95% UV block (the equivalent to SPF
40), guaranteeing protection to both the skin as
well as any soft furnishings. To ensure a cooling
effect, the fabric should be measured according to
the heat and light that passes through it. Materials
that filter 70% of solar heat can reduce interior
room temperatures by more than 10°C, even on
the hottest of days.
Folding arms
The retractable folding arms on any patio
awning must be able to withstand strong breezes
and sudden gusts. Pressure die cast or drop forged
joints on the elbows of folding arms offer the
highest wind loading capabilities, with
Beaufort 5 (24mph wind) as standard
certification and Beaufort 6 (30mph)
offering the highest wind resistance rating.
Springs should be tensioned via stainless
steel cables (intertwined stranded cables
won’t tear or break) and looped around the
elbow to ensure a crisp taut fabric at every
position, allowing rainwater to run off the
material. Fitting the springs and cables with
sheathes will reduce friction and noise from
the vibrations when it’s windy, as well as
result in a clean and finished look. For
optimum tension, arms with twin springs
kept under tension via two steel cables is
recommended, and four steel cables for
deeper projections.
Hardware
A full cassette casing design will not only
provide a neat hideaway for the awning
when retracted but also protect the fabric
and operating mechanism from inclement
weather. A flush-fitting cassette casing is the
most visually appealing and will appear as an
integral part of the façade.
Low maintenance, extruded aluminium is
the metalwork of choice for awnings. It’s
lightweight, corrosion resistant and can be
finished in hundreds of colours to match or
contrast with the features of the property.
QUALICOAT standard powder coated
aluminium creates the hardest finish,
meaning it will withstand the harshest of
weather conditions, including hail and snow,
as well as knocks and bumps in busy
environments.
Motorisation
Radio technology is the operation method
of choice for motorised awnings as it permits
the user to extend and retract at just the
touch of a button (on a hand-hand remote).
A secure rolling code and frequency is
essential for no interference, whist bidirectional
technology allows the user to
view and adjust the exact position of the
awning via an app. Additional functions such
as sun and wind sensors can also be changed
electronically to suit specific requirements.
Integrated tubular motors built within the
awning roller tube should have steel internal
bearings for resilience and be of an
appropriate size (torque) for the chosen
awning. 17RPM (revolutions per minute) will
guarantee smooth and steady operation and
a consistent load, increasing the lifespan of
the awning.
Installation
The installation of an awning is equally as
important as quality of the awning itself. Due
to the considerable load that an awning
exerts, the appropriate fixing method must
be utilised to guarantee a secure and safe
attachment. For the most common masonry
(brickwork) façades, epoxy resin and stud
provide a stress-free anchorage, while
cantilever brackets offer the best solution on
low single storeys.
For rain shower protection, awnings need
to be mounted a set distance on the façade
(determined by projection and leadrail
height) allowing for a 14-degree (or greater)
pitch, preventing water from ‘pooling’ on the
fabric and ensuring it can run off smoothly.
Any additional finishing touches such as
concealed fixing brackets, alu end caps,
elbow covers on folding arms and colour
co-ordinated stitching will ensure a quality
installation that provides exemplary cover
and fully transforms the client’s outdoor
space.
A more private Schulz
markilux has
embellished "Hotel
Schulz" with a solar
protection system
Markilux has planned and realised solar
shading for yet another hotel project.
"Hotel Schulz", situated in the centre of
Berlin. has been provided with a generously
proportioned pergola awning system. Since then,
the outdoor terrace has been fulfilling the function
of extended breakfast room. If needed, the system
can be completely closed in using vertical roller
blinds.
"Hotel Schulz“ is a modern, cosmopolitan hotel
near the city centre on the River Spree which was
opened in 2018. From the al fresco lounge area, it
is possible to enjoy a view of the past history of
the city as it adjoins a preserved section of the
"Berlin Wall" which reflects the spirit of the city
through the brightly coloured graffiti which adorns
it. The hotel management had decided to have the
terrace shaded by awnings. They wanted to use
the area amongst other things as an extended
breakfast area where people from all around the
world could meet one another.
"Intensive discussion and professional advice
steered the customer towards our coupled
pergola awning with tracfix cover guidance system.
The awning, which consists of four separate but
linked units, can be operated by radio remote
control, measures a good 12 metres in width and
covers an area of around 75 square metres",
explains Jan Kattenbeck, sales manager of the
markilux back office team and head of the "team :
project" department. The al fresco lounge area
now offers room for 50 guests in an outdoor
location protected from wind and weather.
Panorama windows offer a
clear view
This is possible, because the vertical roller
blinds, markilux 776 tracfix, and made-to-measure
triangular screens enclose the system on all sides.
By integrating panorama windows, the historical
remnants of The Wall can be kept in sight. In good
weather, the area can be opened up again quickly,
simply by raising the blinds. "The design of the
hotel is very modern and inside even a little hip.
Whereas from outside it gives more an
impression of sobriety. For this reason, light and
neutral colours have been selected for the cover
and frame. They go well with the façade and the
garishly colourful fragment of German history that
abuts the premises of the hotel", is Mr
Kattenbeck's opinion. But it was also easy to find
common ground with the customers. They had
been looking for a competent planning service as
well as top quality products that provide external
solar and wet weather protection and as a result
had decided to go with markilux.
Manhattan transfer
markilux USA has
new HQ in New
York
The head office of markilux in North
America has been located in downtown
New York since autumn 2019. Last summer,
the awning specialist put the finishing touches to
its first showroom there in the New York Design
Center on Lexington Avenue in Manhattan. The
location is ideal for the company because the
Center is home to a number of top-class brands
which attract customers with high purchasing
power. It has not yet been possible to open it
officially, but customers have been able to visit the
showroom by appointment since August of last
year.
“Our subsidiary in the US is still in its infancy.
Shortly after the new ‘markilux USA
Incorporation’ was founded in 2019, we were
given the chance to set up our head office in the
New York Design Center,” says a delighted Klaus
Wuchner, Director of sales and marketing. This
outstanding location is the perfect place to make
markilux known as a brand in the US, too, he
explains.
Representative site at the
heart of Manhattan
The historic building not far from Central Park
in Manhattan has made a name for itself well
beyond the confines of the city. Built in 1926, it
was initially the city’s most well known address for
top-class furniture. It then widened its horizons to
include interior design as well as architecture, and
in the early 1980s became the current, worldrenowned
New York Design Center. On 16 floors
and more than 46,000 square metres, it is home
to around 100 showrooms and more than 500
top-class brands from the world of living.
According to Peer Cornelssen, head of
international sales, these include designers, interior
decorators and architects – a further target group
in the sales process.
Establishing markilux as a
premium brand
to present our products,” says Klaus
Wuchner, something he feels is crucial in
order to clearly establish the brand in the
upper price segment. The location can be
compared with Berlin or Hamburg where
markilux has taken up a prestigious place in
the “stilwerk” and where the showrooms
also serve as open offices. On around 100
square metres in the New York Design
Center, the awning manufacturer exhibits
high-quality products and accessories, which
consciously focus on end consumers with
greater purchasing power.
Perfect time for a launch
in New York
At the end of 2019, markilux was able to
use its new location in New York for its first
training sessions for specialist dealers. In
addition, events in the building over the
winter were able to attract a lot of visitors,
something markilux was also able to benefit
from. The company had planned an official
opening for 2020 and was due to take part
in various in-house events, all of which were
put a stop to by the pandemic. “Our
showroom was finished in July 2020, and
from August onwards, visitors were able to
drop in by appointment. We also had a
virtual tour of the premises on offer.
Although that can never hope to replace
the live experience,” admits Peer
Cornelssen. Depending on the coronavirus
situation, however, an official opening is still
being planned, although when exactly that
will be is unclear. Therefore, for the time
being, customers have to make an
appointment and cannot just drop in
spontaneously. “However, we are hoping
that the situation will improve over the
course of the year and that we will then
also be able to develop and expand the
American market,” says an optimistic Mr
Cornelssen. When things return to normal,
the company is planning to hold further
training sessions for specialist dealers and
dedicated events for architects, and is also
looking forward to take part in the in-house
events of the Design Center.
Yewdale support system
Yewdale
components allow
greater flexibility
over projects like
Good Hope
Hospital
Back in January plans were released to build a
new paediatric A&E at Good Hope Hospital,
part of University Hospitals Birmingham
NHS Foundation Trust. The build aimed to further
support their youngest patients, their families and
the staff who care for them while also providing
more space in the adults A&E.
Yewdale understand the importance of design
within the healthcare industry, not only to be
practical but to support and aid positive recovery
too. In June 2021 the doors opened to the new
emergency department, fitted with a range of
Yewdale’s quality products.
The new emergency department consists of
eight cubicles, a quiet and wellbeing room, a large
waiting area and a dedicated paediatric ambulance
entrance and drop-off. For a healthcare setting,
privacy and cleanliness are crucial.
Long-term Yewdale customer, Just Fabrics,
supplied components and installed products from
their anti-ligature YewdaleKestrel range. Managing
Director, Andrew Yarnold explained:
“We as a company choose Yewdale as our main
supplier of all things blinds, tracking and antiligature.
This is because of their expertise, service
and wide-ranging products which cover our everchanging
client’s needs.
“We partnered up again with Yewdale and the
nominated contractor to fulfil the customers brief
of creating a safe and highly functional medical
space,” commented Andrew Yarnold, managing
director, Just Fabrics
Just Fabrics chose to order components and
made to measure products for this project.
Ordering components allows customers to have
greater control and flexibility over their project.
At Yewdale, not only do they offer training for the
installation of YewdaleKestrel anti-ligature
magnetic brackets and products, but they also
stock a huge range of wholesale components and
offer next day delivery if ordered before 4pm the
day before. So, if you’re a trained installer and
order components, you can manufacture the
products at your own pace and make changes to
The YewdaleKestrel products used in the
Good Hope Hospital project included the
K100 curtain cubicle track (cubicle
tracking) across the ends of the beds to
allow for patient privacy, the K6200
window curtain track on all internal
all of the windows converted to antiligature
with our magnetic brackets – the
wand is designed with user safety in mind
and the PVC fabric is easy to clean and
hygienic for healthcare settings. Each of
these products were fixed with magnets
that are designed to break away under
excess weight. This ensures the ultimate
safety around children and vulnerable
service users.
In an article with Birmingham Live, a
local publication, Dr Mistry, an emergency
department Consultant said:
“We are looking forward to being able
to work in a superb environment which
matches the great level of care we offer
our young patients at Good Hope.”
“I’ve worked as a doctor in ED for over
LEGISLATION
Marking time
UKCA and
Shoosmiths look at
the marking of
goods going into
and out of the EU
The UK Government has announced that
businesses will have a further year to start
using the UKCA marking for goods placed
on the GB market, extending the deadline to 1
January 2023.
What is a UKCA mark?
The UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) marking
is the new UK product marking that is used for
certain goods that are placed on the GB market
and covers most goods which previously required
the EU CE marking, known as ‘new approach’
goods.
The UKCA marking indicates conformity with
the applicable health, safety and environmental
requirements for goods sold within GB. The
marking does not apply to goods sold in
Northern Ireland (NI) as, further to the NI
Protocol, goods placed on the NI market are still
subject to EU product safety rules.
For certain goods being sold in GB, the
manufacturer can affix a UKCA marking on a selfdeclaration
basis, whereas other goods require a
mandatory third party conformity assessment
(done by a UK Approved Body) to be carried out.
Prior to Brexit, the CE marking regime was
recognised in the UK, as in other EU Member
States. However, following the UK’s withdrawal
from the EU, the EU no longer recognises
conformity assessment by UK Approved Bodies
for goods that are placed on the EU market and
the UKCA marking is not recognised on the EU
market. In time, goods with only a CE marking
affixed will no longer be able to be sold on the
GB market.
What is changing?
The UK Government implemented a period of
transition which stated that goods with a CE
marking that meet EU requirements could
continue to be placed on the GB market until 31
December 2021 (provided the EU and UK
requirements remain the same). This provided
businesses with a transition period but also
permitted businesses to use the UKCA marking
on a voluntary basis before that deadline.
However, due to the delays and issues caused by
the pandemic, and largely due to the fact there is
a lack of availability of UK approved bodies to
provide adequate conformity assessment services,
this deadline has now been extended.
The UKCA marking will become compulsory
on 1 January 2023 for goods placed on the GB
market, rather than 1 January 2022. For medical
devices, businesses will not need to use the UKCA
mark until 1 July 2023.
Businesses must take action to ensure they are
ready to apply the UKCA marking by 1 January
2023 and, where mandatory third party
conformity assessment is required, the priority
should be to secure the support of a UK
approved body.
The UK Government website refers to 1
January 2023 as ‘the final deadline’, which suggests
that there will be no further extension granted.
However, if that is going to be a realistic date, the
issue regarding the lack of UK approved bodies
(both availability and/or capacity for certain testing
requirements) must be fully resolved before this
deadline to ensure that adequate conformity
assessment services and capability are available.
VERTICAL BLINDS
Shape of success
Blindshapers can
fit a blind to any
window shape, as
Blinds & Shutters
found out
Way back in the 1960's vertical blinds
were introduced to this Country and
initially were primarily used in offices to
diffuse any light glare. The fabrics were basic white
or cream and really not imaginative so have
unfortunately given the impression of these being
boring plain fabric blinds to a lot of older people
and not something that is decorative for a home.
Things have changed beyond all recognition with
fabulous fabrics of course brought in now that are
really fashionable and the tracks have now advanced
from the purely straight to being able to be curved
into all sorts of shapes from ordinary bay windows,
splay bay windows and even square bays all made in
one track. We have done upward curving arched
tracks as well as very large arches as in these photos,
which for older building renovations work really well.
The new innovations of the Allusion fabrics also lend
themselves well to the shapes we make and with
the German Benthin system can be motorised as
well so that they can be linked up to the home
automation systems if required.
Architects seem to have become obsessed with
the huge apex windows upstairs in homes which
may look great but once the home owners move in
finding a solution to the amount of light coming into
their bedrooms becomes a priority and again
sloping vertical blind tracks can easily be a great
solution. I would recommend that with these a
pelmet of fabric is added to cover the gaps between
the top of the fabric and the track if greater
darkening is needed. With the German Benthin
system the tracks manual control has a braking
mechanism in the end cap so the fabric stays up at
the top when needed without sliding down with
gravity and can be tilted to whichever angle suits the
homeowner.
The systems now have become so much more
reliable now and with many people now wanting to
have window furnishings that both enhance their
rooms as well as giving light control and total privacy
these vertical blinds are now a more than popular
than ever choice, and once installed require very
little maintenance or effort by the homeowner
which certainly something they want now with
work/life balances.
2022.
Santa Fe Shutters Hampton collection has
experienced this consumer shift to a “home
crafted product”. The recently expanded 32,000
sq. ft manufacturing facility in Lisburn, is set to see
a further expansion in October to facilitate the
increased demand for Hampton shutters. This
expansion will see a staff increase of 33% to the
shutter production facility and 50% output.
As the Hampton shutter brand increases its
presence in the UK shutter market place the
benefits of these hand-crafted faux wood shutters
are certainly being recognised:
• Solid PVC is an extremely hardwearing
material and perfect for areas of high moisture
• The specific composition of Hampton PVC
enables the crafted shutters to have a quality
aesthetic. The quality matt finish replicates that of
a painted wood shutter.
• Urban louvre –The 89mm blade design offers
enhanced light control as the blades close neatly
onto one another reducing the amount of light
flow into a room.
• The comprehensive selection of frame
options enables the majority of window styles to
be dressed in Hampton shutters.
Improving the customer experience is key for
the Santa Fe brand. The online site guides the
trade through the ordering procedure in an easy
step by step process and presents several benefits:
• An easy to use digital online ordering system
• Encapsulates all specification options and
order possibilities
• Takes the user from quotation and shutter
design to order and final delivery
• Enables the user to design and configure each
individual shutter through the creation of line
drawings which aids final order confirmation.
• Instantaneous communication of all order
details direct to the factory
• Reduces processing with increased accuracy
• Enhances order lead times
Further investment into the Santa Fe brand will
be seen in the New Year with the development of
a new online ordering portal what will offer a
quick three step order process along with detailed
3D shutter visuals.
Cradle to cradle
Lienesch introduces
Cradle to Cradle
certified screen
fabric True Clear
Alu
In July, Lienesch B.V from Haaksbergen, the
Netherlands, received the Cradle to Cradle
bronze certificate for its metallized screen fabric
True Clear Alu.
The C2C certificate was awarded to Conny
Pasman, head of product development at Lienesch.
True® Clear Alu is the ideal screen fabric for
sustainably new build construction projects. This
PVC-free screen cloth with an opening factor of 2%
has a reflection value of 72%. As a result, this solar
shading can be included in the nZEB (nearly Zero
Energy Buildings) energy calculation for new build
projects. “The fabric itself is not only made of
healthy materials, but the use of the fabric also
leads to a healthier and more comfortable indoor
climate,” says Conny Pasman.
“Obtaining the C2C product certificate is really
the crowning glory. The chosen weave construction
in combination with the nano-thin metallized layer
on the outside of the cloth leads to a perfect, clear
view to the outside. In addition, it prevents glare
and thus leads to good visual comfort in the
workplace. And by using inherent FR yarn, the
highest fire- resistant properties are guaranteed,
even with its long lifespan,” says Conny Pasman
enthusiastically.
True Clear Alu is available in a width of 285 cm
and in six timeless colours. About Lienesch
Creating fabrics is in Lienesch' blood. As a
manufacturer of window decoration fabrics, we
have over 20 years of experience in this field.
Thanks to our knowledge of fabrics, continuous
innovation and close relationships with our
customers, suppliers and partners, we are able to
provide the market with high-quality, innovative and
inspiring collections. The focus on quality, personal
contact and our passion for textiles makes us
unique. www.lienesch.nl
About True
True is an honest and transparent label for
window decoration fabrics and is only applied
when we are sure that it meets all sustainability
criteria.
Responsible consumption and production is one
of the 17 sustainable development goals set by the
United Nations in 2015. Sustainable consumption
and production is about doing more and better
with less. This is exactly what we have in mind with
the True® label. Responsible manufacturing involves
producing goods and services in an ethical manner,
minimizing waste and pollution.
PROFILE
Celebrating 70 years
RA Irwin tells
Blinds & Shutters
about its history
and plans for the
future
In 1951, in the small County Armagh village of
Magheralin, Northern Ireland, my grandfather,
Alexander Irwin first opened the doors of R.A.
Irwin. The business originally began as a
manufacturer of handstitched handkerchiefs, but
the arrival of the disposable tissue soon
necessitated significant change and proved pivotal
in establishing R.A. Irwin as the textile specialists
you know today.
Now, in the third generation, the Irwin Family
remain at the heart of the business, along with the
core company values on which R.A. Irwin was
built. We are committed to providing customers
with quality fabrics, dependability and superior
levels of service.
The last 70 years have been a journey, in which
we have experienced thrilling highs and successes,
along with some unfortunate lows. For R.A. Irwin
the latter presented itself in 1985 when a fire
broke out, burning the entire factory to the
ground and, in 2008, our premises endured a
major flood. These were challenging times to say
the least but, as a company, adaptability and
resilience were key in rebuilding the business to be
stronger and more progressive.
Unveiling the world’s first commercial digitally
printed roller blinds at the 2009 R+T Stuttgart
trade show was a particularly exciting and
memorable time. Since then our pioneering print
capabilities have gone from strength to strength
and we have continued to grow and innovate.
Stunning designs are created in our in-house
design studio and brought to life through our
cutting-edge digital print technology.
At R.A. Irwin, experience has taught us to
embrace change and it has been a driving force in
reshaping the business. In 2019 we expanded our
product portfolio with the launch of Honeycell,
forming an exciting partnership with fabric
innovators, Lienesch, to provide new and
innovative cellular fabrics to the UK market.
Honeycell encapsulates exceptional quality, choice
and style and continues to make its mark on the
blind industry.
The looms fell silent in October 2020 as we
made the strategic decision to cease weaving. This
was the end of an era for the company but
marked the beginning of an exciting, new chapter
International expansion
DUCO joins forces
with Daikin Europe
for international
expansion
As a Belgian manufacturer of ventilation
systems, DUCO has for 30 years been
synonymous with innovative and high
quality products that guarantee a healthy indoor
climate for the end customer. The company does
this with its wide range of window ventilators and
boxes, lamella grilles and fabric solar shading. Daikin
Europe has now picked up this unique positioning
and will be launching in the residential ventilation
segment in partnership with the Veurne-based
company.
Last year, air quality in residential buildings
became noticeably more important. As a result of
the corona pandemic, people became increasingly
aware that a polluted indoor climate has a major
impact on our health. Ventilation specialist DUCO
and Daikin Europe are also aware of this impact on
people and are joining forces.
Setting trends in mechanical
ventilation
Since the start, DUCO has been a pioneer and
trendsetter in mechanical ventilation. Today, DUCO
can deliver not only the quietest D systems on the
European market, but also the smartest. This is
thanks to an integrated 2-zone operation on the
DucoBox Energy Premium and automated
demand based on CO2 and relative humidity on
the entire D range.
That way, DUCO offers not only maximum
performance during the process of ventilation itself,
but the company also manages to confine the
ventilation to only those rooms where it’s needed,
for as long as it’s needed. The end result? DUCO
succeeds in providing the end customer with a
healthy indoor climate combined with minimal
energy consumption and maximum (acoustic)
comfort.
Golden partnership
To respond to the increasingly pressing demand
for total residential solutions, DAIKIN has now
joined forces with DUCO. DAIKIN will, therefore,
be offering the advanced DUCO solutions to
PROFILE
customers across its entire European
network.
“We are seeing residential ventilation
become increasingly important. More and
more of our professional customers are
asking us for total solutions in their pursuit of
a one-stop shop. And so we set out to find a
reliable manufacturer that, like DAIKIN,
prioritises quality, innovation and comfort and
that would enable us to set ourselves apart
in this segment, one that is new to DAIKIN.
In DUCO, we found a partner here in
Belgium (DAIKIN’s European HQ is in
Ostend),” says Anthony Dimou, deputy
general manager of Sales bij Daikin Europe.
“We were immediately impressed with the
products and the professionalism of the
DUCO team and we’re looking forward to
initiating our customers in the DUCO
solutions.”
DUCO’s CEO, Luc Renson also speaks of
a fine partnership: “As a multinational active
throughout Europe, DAIKIN is a dream
partner for us. We will be able to market our
ventilation systems on a bigger scale and, with
that, underscore our European ambitions.
Both companies have the same DNA: quality,
innovation and completely hassle-free service
for our customers. That’s what made us a
good match. There is still some work to be
done on effective ventilation legislation in
some countries, but we are convinced that
more and more people are becoming aware
of the importance of ventilation. For their
own health and that of their children and
their homes. As a result, more people will
eventually make a conscious choice in favour
of high quality total solutions. Therefore, we
are thrilled to be able to announce this new
partnership today so we can keep on
contributing to a healthier and greener
Europe.”
PLEATED
Perfect pleats
Louvolite has a
pleated range for
its clients
It is surely a well recognised fact that the pleated
shade only found a place in the blindmaker’s
armoury when the new-fangled way of selling
more glazing units (also called a conservatory)
came back into fashion in the late 1980s and early
1990s.
Blind manufacturers were fully conversant with
manufacturing and installing products that were to
be fitted in windows that were positioned in the
normal orientation – e.g. vertical. However, angle
them in a roof and you have a whole different ball
game. The pleated blind had of course been
around for some time, with the first real volume
pleated shades being of good quality, stiffened and
printed paper believed to be manufactured by a
Scandinavian company.
In 1990 Louvolite launched its first pleated fabric
programme and, in step with other Louvolite fabric
collections, this programme was extensive and
presented in a fabulous presentation book.
At the same time, Louvolite introduced a
pleated system that allowed manufacturers to cut
fabric and manufacture made to measure blinds as
effectively as they could with other products. When
viewed against other products, two things were
significantly different with pleated shades; the
primary function of pleated shades was to reduce
solar gain in conservatories whilst also providing
decoration and privacy. Gravity had a major
negative effect on a pleated blind though – the
pleated blindmakers worse nightmare … pleat
droop!
Ahead of the game, in 1994/5 Louvolite created
SPC which soon became the coating adopted on
all Louvolite performance fabrics for pleated (and
eventually other) products.
SPC significantly improved the performance of
fabrics regarding their ability to reduce solar gain
and in addition were much more user friendly than
the metallised fabric available at that time. In
tandem with this, Louvolite presentation material
included all the performance data across all pleated
shades to enable the blindmaker/consumer to
select fabric that offered the appropriate level of
protection. It is difficult to understand how a
pleated shade product could ever be offered
without the accompanying solar and optical
performance information.
Louvolite then created Equi-Pleat to eliminate
‘pleat droop’. This great concept anchored each
pleat to the next and secured all of them to the
headrail. This resulted in each expended pleat
60 Blinds & Shutters • ISSUE FOUR 2021
PLEATED
remaining equidistant to the next, creating a
much-improved effect when the blind was
deployed.
Perfect Fit was a programme that
changed pleated blind sales forever. In the
days of BPF (before Perfect Fit), blind
manufacturing companies would have teams
of installers taking literally days to fully install
blinds within a conservatory. Totally capable
blind manufacturing companies would
subcontract conservatory roof installations
to a few recognised experts.
Perfect Fit changed all
that
It enabled blind manufacturers to use a
measuring and manufacturing system that
would produce Perfect Fit blinds guaranteed
to fit the window for which they were
measured. Add to that the fact that there
was no need for drilling and screw fixing
with Perfect Fit, a conservatory could be
fitted out with blinds in no time at all - it
simply changed the way blinds were
installed… period!
Of course, the brilliance of Perfect Fit
could never be restricted to the
conservatory and over the years the
product has migrated into an all-rounder of
an installation system occupying all the
window types and indeed doors types
which are found using double glazed sealed
units in all areas of the home.
The biggest company in our industry
launched its cellular product back in the
1980’s with a programme that centred on
the American market. It is reported that
within the first couple of years the cellular
(or honeycombe) product had captured
some 60% of the North American pleated
blind sales and it has continued to develop.
Notwithstanding some of the
environmental benefits attached to cellular
shades, thermal and solar efficiencies and
the like, the acceptance of this product in
the UK market, whilst sluggish in the earlier
years, has now found a unique and valued
position with any window shade portfolio.
The honeycombe structure of cellular
blinds creates multiple benefits. The layer of
air within the honeycombe has insulation
benefits – both solar and thermal. The lift
cords pass through the centre of the
honeycombe and as such are not visible
when the blind is deployed resulting in a
neater finish to the blind and where an
opaque fabric is used – no holes. Blinds
manufactured with Perfect Fit systems can
satisfy the child safety requirements of
EN13120 by virtue of removing the need
for operating cords and chains – perfect!
The range of offerings with cellular fabrics
continues to grow. Louvolite currently offers
a wide variety of cellular options with both
light filtering and opaque fabrics available
and in various widths up to 3m wide. The
cellular product can be manufactured using
a freehang pleated system, a venetian
headrail system, a tubular operating system
(roller shade) and is an absolute ideal
companion to Louvolite Perfect Fit (hand
and glove comes to mind). Both Louvolite
pleated and Louvolite cellular programmes
can be manufactured using the Louvolite
One Touch wand motorised system
Both of these products are sophisticated
window furnishings that can offer an
interesting slant to the more traditional
options available. The products are as
flexible as roller shades, but introduce new
design features as the pleats or cells are
extended or contracted. In addition, the
additional insulation capability should not be
overlooked and will be welcomed by
households eager to reduce heating/cooling
energy costs. If the consumer is given a free
choice of product when selecting window
furnishings it will be interesting to see the
impact this has on the continuing success of
two great products.
within the book have also been made using
responsibly sourced materials.
The layout of the book has not changed, the
right-hand side of the book is laid out in
colourway format, and the left-hand side of the
book is laid out by range. Greys are more popular
than ever, so we have moved the grey fabrics
towards the front of the book for easy browsing!
We have also included a new design gallery page
showing off our stunning new pattern designs,
while giving you an idea of how they will appear in
a window.
Here at Style Studio we believe that everyone
needs to do more to help the environment. For
the first time in Hive & Pleated we now have a
variety of recycled eco fabrics. These fabrics have
been developed using yarn that has been derived
from post-consumer plastic drinks bottles. These
fabrics are versatile and offer a high-quality finish.
There are 5 ranges available in an array of
textures, weaves and colour options. Visit our
website to learn more about our eco story.
The Style Studio interior experts have been
hard at work researching current and future
trends to bring you a range of modern,
PLEATED
Going one better
Easy installation is
possible with
Perfect Fit
Universal
Perfect Fit has been one of the most
influential products of recent times. It has
fast become THE installation method of
choice for blinds being installed into any building
with double-glazed sealed unit window systems
featuring flexible gaskets. It will carry most blind
types, pleated, cellular, venetian, roller and Vision
products.
That said, there are still some window types the
Perfect Fit system simply isn’t suited for – sash
windows, many traditional wooden windows, the
new fangled atriums or lanterns that have
appeared of late designed to shed oodles of light
into areas of the home previously in constant
twilight.
But surely there must be some way that Perfect
Fit can be enhanced to allow installation in such
instances – well there is now with Perfect Fit
Universal.
The methodology is simple. For those window
installations not capable of housing a Perfect Fit
blind, then create a dedicated framing system that
fits to the inside or outside recess of the offending
window and design that frame to match Perfect
Fit installation methods. Now that allows Perfect
Fit to be “perfect” for even more window shading
opportunities.
The aforementioned atriums or lanterns add
real panache and style to homes. In addition,
however, they can add real temperature variations
too. Even with some of the best glazing coatings,
the summer sun can cause serious overheating
issues and even colour damage to flooring or
furnishings. In winter, the reverse can be true and
rising warm air may be lost through the expanse
of the glazed lantern. Perfect Fit Universal with a
cellular shade installed can, when operated as
required, reduce solar gain and thermal loss,
thereby allowing the householder to gain control
of the area once again and safeguard household
furnishings.
In addition, many Louvolite customers have
recommended Perfect Fit housing a Louvolite
blockout cellular fabric as a simple and effective way
of reducing light ingress in any room that required
darkening. For example bedrooms, theatre rooms
and so on. Now with Perfect Fit Universal, such
performance can be significantly enhanced by
installing Perfect Fit Universal inside, or ideally
outside, the recess and again using a Louvolite
blockout cellular fabric. Fabulous and no doubt
simpler than a more typical blockout system and,
just like original Perfect Fit, looks so neat as if it was
part of the original window installation.
So now there are many more window types
that can be enhanced by the installation of a
Perfect Fit window blind – it seems that this could
be a Perfect time for such a long awaited addition.
Softcell sophistication
The Fabric Box
Softcell collection
has a wide range of
fabrics across five
ranges
The Fabric Box Softcell Collection presents a
perfect selection of 25mm cellular fabrics.
Branded under The Fabric Box this
Collection of softly woven celled fabrics
compliment the array of textures available within
the roller and vertical Collections.
The Collection boasts 33 fabrics across 5 ranges,
in both dimout and blockout options enabling
optimum light management. The subtle colour
palette comprises of popular muted tones along
with sophisticated two-tone designs complementing
the cellular form of the fabric.
The delicate linear form and angles of each
Softcell fabric are diffused further with the selection
of dimout fabrics, whilst the blockout fabrics
facilitate optimum light control.
Softcell is the perfect choice as we enter
Autumn/ Winter, the delicately constructed 25mm
cell structure creates a pocket of air which acts as
an additional insulation layer. This natural insulation
pocket offers excellent energy efficiency properties
in the cooler months whilst reducing heat gain in
the Summer. The majority of the Softcell fabrics
present a white fabric to the exterior which reflects
the infrared heat rays from the sun acting as a
coolant in the warmer months.
The Softcell Collection can be manufactured with
multiple operating systems, bottom up and topdown
bottom up; both suitable for corded or for
free hanging operation. The 25mm cells make
Softcell the ideal fabric for Perfect Fit frames. The
patented frame adds further insulating properties
creating an additional barrier from heat loss.
The Fabric Box Softcell Collection is due to see
the launch of a more comprehensive offering in
2022.
New textures arrive
JM has a range of
new textures fr its
customers
Natural structures are an ongoing trend in
interior design and Junkers & Müllers has
the right textile answers for this. JM’s
structured segment, already successfully
established in the market, is now significantly
expanded by new textures.
A diverse selection of new fabrics from rustic to
refined: For a start, there is Bamboo with its coarse
raffia weave look. sierra color varies surface
appearance in subtle natural colours, while Bouclé
Frost combines lightly shimmering yarns with a lively
weave. Ancona, with its grainy salt-and-pepper look,
appears very homely. the robust linen texture of
Atrio on the other hand fits perfectly in modern
country-style interiors.
Granada pearl is also new to the collection: the
combination of coarse weaves with shimmering
metallic effects is particularly interesting and its
pearl coating on the back ensures excellent thermal
properties.
Most of these semi-transparent fabrics are also
available as blackout fabrics. They look as natural as
jute and linen fabrics while simultaneously offering
the stable hanging properties of polyester fabrics. The
colour palettes range from cool white and silver
shades to soft beige, warm sand and earth tones.
Going wireless
Somfy’s new
Sonesse 28
WireFree RTS
External Battery
Motor offers quiet,
wireless
convenience for
motorized window
coverings
Somfy is excited to introduce the Sonesse 28
WireFree RTS External Battery motor. The
newest addition to Somfy’s Designed for
Silence wirefree motor range features a compact
size and smaller diameter motor head. This makes
the Sonesse 28 WireFree RTS External battery
motor a great fit for the motorization of smaller
windows.
“The improved sound performance and wireless
design makes this motor perfect for today’s
decorative shading solutions,” said Brent Holup,
Somfy North America product manager.
With Designed for Silence quiet operation, the
Sonesse 28 WireFree RTS External Battery motor is
perfect for a wide variety of applications. It features
smooth motion with adjustable speed control and is
compatible with Somfy’s Situo Variation remote for
precise control of sheer and layered shades. Built-in
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) immunity is also ideal
for use in layered shades.
The Sonesse 28 WireFree RTS External Battery
motor features a recessed programming button on
the motor head for easier installation and
programming. It also features an LED low battery
indicator to let users know when it’s time to
recharge the shade. Charging the external Li-ion
battery can be accomplished by virtue of a plug-in
wall charger or convenient solar option. The
Sonesse 28 WireFree RTS External Battery motor
can also be powered without a battery, thus using a
friendly plug-and-play 12V DC power supply.
Users can also enjoy app control and voice
control of motorized shading through Somfy’s
myLink hub and TaHoma gateway. Somfy’s smart
shading works with a wide variety of smart home
systems like Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Brilliant,
IFTTT, SmartThings, Philips Hue, Crestron, Control4,
Savant, and more. Users can create scenes and
schedules for smart home products, including
motorized shades, that can be controlled through
an app, voice control, or with automated schedules.
Users can create a Good Morning schedule, for
instance, that raises all their bedroom shades in the
morning, turns on the lights, and starts the morning
news. No matter how large or small the window,
Somfy has a smart motorization solution.
Third-party home automation integration also
makes it simple to create a fully realized smart
home with motorized shading. Smart shading is an
integral component of the modern smart home,
providing energy savings, comfort, and privacy.
“The Sonesse 28 WireFree RTS External
Battery motor expands Somfy’s wirefree motor
range and increases smart shading opportunities
for smaller windows with rechargeable power,”
Holup said.
Integrated experience
Somfy and Crestron
Partner to Deliver
Automation in
Outdoor Living via
Crestron Home
Somfy and Crestron have announced a
partnership to control outdoor and indoor
motorized solutions. This Crestron Home
driver for Somfy’s new TaHoma Gateway interface
will allow the seamless control of smart shading
solutions.
“This highly requested collaboration will make it
simple for integrators to incorporate Somfy
motorized components into the Crestron Home
environment,” said Brittany Mier y Terán, partnership
and custom integration channel manager. “By
working together, we’ve made it easier for Crestron
Home integrators to automate rolling shutters,
pergolas, awnings, exterior screens, projection
screens, and solar shading that use Somfy motors.”
Recent events have driven interest in beautiful
and functional outdoor spaces. Homeowners want
their backyards to function better for their needs
while maintaining a “staycation” feeling. Motorized
outdoor products can create spaces that react to
time, weather, and environment to improve outdoor
living and enhance satisfaction.
Crestron Home can now seamlessly control
Somfy motors in pergolas with motorized louvers
or motorized screens. Combine with other smart
home solutions like lighting, music and more to
create a vacation atmosphere for homeowners
without leaving the backyard.
“More than ever, the connected home extends
past the interior. Integrators frequently work with
both Somfy and Crestron Home on the same
projects, which is why we knew it was important to
partner to deliver a frictionless user experience.”
said Bob Bavolacco, director of technology partner
programs.
This new driver allows for a seamless integration
into the rapidly expanding Crestron Home
platform. Crestron Home allows homeowners to
easily access and control every aspect of their
smart home from one simple and intuitive platform.
Utilizing open and forward-looking technology
means Somfy’s new TaHoma interface will maintain
compatibility with the Crestron Home automation
system now and in the future. TaHoma provides a
single platform for Radio Technology Somfy (RTS)
and Somfy’s upcoming Zigbee motors with a wide
range of interior and exterior applications.
While creating the ideal outdoor oasis,
integrators can also offer traditional smart window
treatment options for motorized shades, blinds, and
draperies.
Crestron also offers drivers and modules for
various Somfy products including myLink, Somfy
Digital Network Power over Ethernet (PoE) and a
driver is upcoming for the Somfy Connect Universal
Automation Interface Plus (UAI+).
“Our goal is to improve not only the outdoor
living experience, but the integrator’s experience as
well,” said Mier y Terán.
Lutron has a range
Lutron Electronics has announced the addition
of smart wood blinds to its window coverings
function of bespoke wood blinds, with the
convenience and control of smart home
technology.
The smart wood blinds ensure homeowners
automatically have the perfect light through their
Natural Light Optimisation feature. By harnessing
your smart device’s inbuilt compass and GPS
customise each blind to taste, prioritising privacy or
more light depending on the room’s use.
Desire for comfort and autonomous features at
home has never been higher. The comfort and
lighting worldwide market, comprising of devices
aimed at improving the atmosphere at home, is
expected to more than double by 2025. The smart
wood blinds offer an elegant and accessible entry
point to smart home automation, effectively
meaning blinds never need be touched and can be
controlled through a single application.
As well as complete control, the blinds require
no wiring or expertise for installation. They are
powered by standard, off-the-shelf alkaline D or AA
batteries, taking less than 20 minutes per blind to
install and takes no prior expertise or training to
setup.
“We are always striving to provide customers
with the perfect experience, whether that be
through lighting or shading solutions. The smart
wood blinds are yet another step in the direction of
creating a completely autonomous, controllable, and
self-optimising environment for homeowners. They
simply provide the right amount of natural light
throughout the day with effortless elegance,” said
