Director IFTM Top Resa
and Director, Tourism Division, RX France
“Une forme de magie
pour cette 43 ème édition
d’IFTM Top Resa”
On réfléchit
d’ailleurs à éventuellement avoir en
parallèle un “Pays à l’Honneur” et
une “Région à l’Honneur” à l’avenir”.
“A form of magic for this
43 rd edition of IFTM Top
Resa”
For Frédéric Lorin, Director
of IFTM Top Resa, the 2021
vintage of IFTM was a form
of magic, which was due
in particular to the driving
factor represented by the
“reunion” of the profession.
A trade fair that rustles with life,
where behind the masks, one
could generally always sense a
smile. A sentiment of joy felt by all
those present at this 43rd IFTM
Top Resa show and especially by
Frédéric Lorin, its Director.
“Clearly, it was not a foregone
conclusion vis-à-vis the market,
but nor was it internally when
the question was raised about
holding this show. But it was good
for us to move forward,” he stated.
He says the encouragement
came from all sides. “There was
an incredible energy. It’s not only
what I felt, but it’s what I heard. It
must be said that we are the first
tourism event to resume after 18
months.”
“ THERE
WAS AN
INCREDIBLE
ENERGY ”
For Frédéric Lorin, this particular
IFTM has been a veritable
reunion, a renewal, more than a
simple resumption of activity: “A
recovery can’t be decreed, but
IFTM is a building block.”
Another reason for satisfaction:
the launch of the “Region
of Honour” - in this case,
Corsica. “The region responded
immediately when we decided to
introduce this concept. Moreover,
we are also thinking of eventually
having a ‘Country of Honour’ and
a ‘Region of Honour’ in parallel in
the future”.
“ LES VACANCIERS
SONT DÉSORMAIS À
LA RECHERCHE DE
DURABILITÉ ET D’UNE
NOUVELLE RELATION
AVEC LA NATURE ”
L’Italie - toujours plus dédiée au
tourisme durable
L’ENIT cherche
ainsi à conclure des protocoles
d’accord par des synergies avec
tous les organismes et acteurs du
secteur. L’objectif est de faciliter
les déplacements et d’aborder les
différents thèmes avec une approche
innovante et hypertechnologique.
Nous pensons que cela garantira
la confiance des voyageurs et
accélérera la définition de l’offre de
tourisme durable en favorisant le
tourisme actif et la biodiversité.
Quel segment touristique a connu
le plus de succès ?
Le tourisme de plein air
a connu récemment une
transformation rapide. Il est
aujourd’hui bien plus en mesure
de permettre des vacances de
meilleure qualité. Les choix
et les caractéristiques des
séjours évoluent aussi. Les
vacanciers sont désormais à la
recherche de durabilité et d’une
nouvelle relation avec la nature. Le
séjour doit être actif, et les formes
de bien-être psychologique et
physique sont au cœur de tout. Pour
cette raison, l’Italie, avec ses régions
intérieures, ses villages, sa mer,
sa culture, sa gastronomie et son
vin, représente un modèle gagnant.
Qu’est-ce qui est différent dans la
manière dont l’ENIT promeut l’Italie
aujourd’hui par rapport à avant la
crise du COVID ?
Bon nombre des priorités et des
thèmes qui ont émergé avec la
pandémie avaient déjà été pris
en compte dans les plans de
l’ENIT depuis un certain temps.
Nous pensions déjà à la durabilité
et à la numérisation, ainsi
qu’à l’analyse des big data. Le Covid
a accéléré certaines tendances,
conduisant naturellement à un
tourisme responsable, à une
répartition plus équilibrée des flux
sur les différentes périodes
de l’année, à une valorisation
des expériences de vacances et des
zones moins connues des grandes
villes.
L’Italie a connu une croissance
rapide du tourisme de luxe
ces dernières années. Comment
ce secteur évolue-t-il ?
Le tourisme de luxe en Italie
représente 25 milliards d’euros,
avec un potentiel pour atteindre 60-
100 milliards d’euros uniquement
sur la consommation directe.
Les estimations se fondent sur
la capacité d’attirer un plus
grand nombre de touristes haut
de gamme (actuellement, le
ratio n’est que de 3 sur 10), un
plus grand nombre de touristes
millionnaires chinois (environ 80
I INTERVIEW EXCLUSIVE I EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW I
Italy - ever more dedicated to
sustainable tourism
Active tourism and biodiversity at the heart of Italy’s offering at IFTM Top Resa
Italy is always a favourite among travel professionals attending
IFTM Top Resa. But what is trending as the world heads into
a “new normal”, and what is the “tourism vision” for years to
come? We put the question to ENIT’s Director of Marketing and
Promotion, Maria Elena Rossi.
Defining the offer to ensure our
destinations remain attractive, even
during the periods when they are
less frequented by tourists, is
crucial. We aim to enhance the
value of the existing cultural
and accommodation heritage,
including through the use of real
estate of historical and artistic
value for tourism purposes.
ENIT is pursuing memoranda
of understanding through
synergies with all bodies and
stakeholders operating in the sector.
The aim is to make travelling easier,
and to approach the various themes
with an innovative and hypertechnological
slant. We believe
this will guarantee peace of mind
for travellers and speed up the
definition of the sustainable tourism
offer by promoting active tourism
and biodiversity.
What kind of tourism has been most
successful?
In recent years, open-air tourism has
undergone a rapid transformation
“
HOLIDAYMAKERS
ARE NOW
LOOKING FOR
SUSTAINABILITY
AND A NEW
RELATIONSHIP
WITH NATURE ”
and is now even more capable
of allowing for holidays of the
highest quality. This is what foreign
tourists from nearby countries
enjoy the most. The choices and
characteristics of stays are
changing. Holidaymakers are now
looking for sustainability and a new
relationship with nature. The stay
must be active, and psychological
and physical forms of wellbeing are
at the heart of everything. For this
reason, Italy, with its inland areas,
villages, sea, culture, food and
wine, represents a winning model.
What is different about the way ENIT
is promoting Italy now, compared
to before the COVID crisis?
Many of the priorities and themes
that emerged with the pandemic
had already been reflected
in ENIT’s plans for some time.
We were already thinking
about sustainability and digitisation
as well as big data analysis.
Covid has accelerated some of the
trends, leading naturally towards
responsible tourism, a more even
distribution of flows over different
periods of the year, an appreciation
of holiday experiences and of the
lesser-known areas of large cities.
Italy has witnessed a rapid growth
in luxury tourism in recent years.
How is this sector progressing?
Luxury tourism in Italy is worth €25bn,
with all the potential to reach
€60–100bn in direct consumption
alone. The estimates are based
on the ability to attract a higher
number of upmarket tourists
(currently, Italy intercepts only
3 out of 10), a higher number
of Chinese millionaire tourists
(approximately 80% have never
been to Italy) and the involvement
of elite Italian tourists who currently
choose foreign destinations (1–3
million trips).
I PAROLES DE PROFESSIONNELS I TRADE TALK I
IFTM Top Resa
IFTM Top Resa delivers
a strong signal to the
market
Guillaume Linton is Director General of the
tour operator Asia, but is also “Mayor of the
TO Village”. It is with his two hats that he takes
stock of this edition of the show for IFTM Daily
Cet IFTM
tombe d’autant plus à pic que l’on
assiste au retour du marché longcourrier.
“ LA CRISE
A REMIS LES
AGENCES DE
VOYAGES ET
LES TOUR-
OPÉRATEURS AU
CŒUR DE NOTRE
MÉTIER ”
Comment se dessine justement la
demande long-courrier ?
Nous incitons nos clients en 2022
à voyager long-courrier. D’autant
moment disparu. La France, l’Allemagne
et le Royaume Uni deviennent
du coup les marchés émetteurs
les plus importants d’Asie.
D’où ce message à promouvoir
les destinations intercontinentales
car elles sont peu fréquentées et
redeviennent paradisiaques.
Quelles sont les
destinations longcourrier
qui vous
semblent prêtes ?
Je pense au sud
de la Thaïlande,
au Sri Lanka, à
l’Ouzbékistan,
les Émirats
Arabes Unis
ou encore
Oman. Et en
Afrique, à la
Tanzanie, Maurice/
La Réunion ou
encore l’Afrique du
Sud. D’autres comme la
Malaisie, Singapour, Bali devraient
rapidement suivre.
Quel est pour vous le point positif
de cette crise Covid ?
La crise a remis les agences de
voyages et les tour-opérateurs
au coeur de notre métier en
valorisant notre savoir-faire -
conseils, formalités, assurances
ou rapatriements le cas échéant.
The mobilisation was very
strong and frankly we
are very happy. This
show is a strong
signal for the
market. A sort
of back-toschool
where
everyone has
prepared for
the new term.
This IFTM is all
the more timely
given the return of
the long-haul market.
Indeed, how is long-haul
demand shaping-up?
We are encouraging our customers
to travel long-haul in 2022,
especially since many markets
such as China and Japan have
disappeared for the moment. As
a result, the French, Germans and
English became the most important
outbound markets for Asia.
Hence this message to promote
intercontinental destinations as
they are little frequented and are
becoming paradise-like again.
What long-haul destinations do
you think are ready?
I am thinking of southern Thailand,
Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan, the UAE
“ THE CRISIS
HAS PUT TRAVEL
AGENCIES AND
TOUR OPERATORS
BACK AT THE
HEART OF OUR
BUSINESS ”
and Oman. And in Africa, Tanzania,
Mauritius/Réunion or South Africa.
Others like Malaysia, Singapore,
Bali should soon follow.
What, for you, has been the
“upside” of this Covid crisis?
The crisis has put travel agencies
and tour operators back at
the heart of our business by
enhancing our know-how, with
advice, formalities, insurance or
repatriation if necessary.
UN RÔLE MORAL ET ÉTHIQUE
Pour Guillaume Linton, la crise
aura aussi mis en exergue le
rôle moral et ethique des touropérateurs.
«Nous participons à
la relance du marché avec nos
réceptifs et partenaires à travers
le monde. C’est un soutien que
nous devons apporter à nos
partenaires historiques qui en
ont besoin. De plus, il y a pour
nous un enjeu éthique, celui
de promouvoir le «voyager
différemment». On a une vraie
responsabilité à inciter nos
clients au voyage vertueux...»
A MORAL AND ETHICAL ROLE
For Guillaume Linton, the
crisis has also highlighted
the moral and ethical role
of tour operators. “We are
participating in the revival of
the market with our receptives
and partners around the world.
This is support that we need
to provide for our historical
partners. In addition, there
is an ethical issue for us –
promoting the idea to ‘travel
differently’. We have a real
responsibility to encourage our
customers to travel virtuously.”
depuis Paris….
“Ce fut une bonne saison, une
bonne surprise pour le tourisme de
la France vers le Portugal”, assure
Jean-Pierre Pinheiro, Directeur
France et Luxembourg de Turismo
de Portugal. La destination a de fait
bien marché en France en raison
d’une excellente offre de vols et
d’un capital sympathie toujours
très fort parmi les Français. “Nous
bénéficions aussi d’un marché
affinitaire fort en France avec une
communauté de 1,5 million de
personnes d’origine portugaise ou
ayant des liens avec le Portugal”.
Si le marché français clôturera 2021
avec des chiffres représentant la
moitié de 2019, Jean-Pierre Pinheiro
se montre plutôt optimiste. “Les
capacités aériennes reviennent
peu à peu à leur niveau de 2019.
Nous sommes par exemple ravis
d’avoir enfin des vols directs sur
les Açores depuis Paris avec Sata
et Transavia. On souhaitait cette
liaison depuis longtemps. Les
Açores sont le type de destination
idéale -comme Madère- pour les
voyageurs en quête d’écotourisme
avec une nature intacte et des
paysages surprenants. A Madère
Portugal.
The Azores, Madeira and wine
tourism enrich Portugal’s offer
in 2022
For Jean-Pierre Pinheiro, Director France and Luxembourg for
Turismo de Portugal, the destination continues to seduce French
travellers, and IFTM was a welcome reminder of this, especially
since there are now direct flights to the Azores from Paris.
“It was a good season, a good surprise
concerning tourism from France to
Portugal”, said Jean-Pierre Pinheiro,
Director France and Luxembourg of
Turismo de Portugal. The destination
has indeed done well in France due
to an excellent offer of flights and
an ongoing popularity here. “We
benefit from a strong market affinity
in France with a community of 1.5
million people of Portuguese origin
or having links with Portugal”.
While the French market will end
2021 with figures representing
half of 2019, Mr Pinheiro is rather
optimistic. “Air capacities are
gradually returning to their 2019
levels. We are delighted to finally
have direct flights to the Azores from
Paris with Sata and Transavia. We’ve
been hoping for this link for a long
time. The Azores are the ideal type
of destination - like Madeira - for
travellers seeking ecotourism - with
untouched nature and surprising
landscapes. In Madeira, for example,
visitors will find tea, pineapple or
passionfruit plantations.”
PORTUGAL ADDS WINE
TOURISM TO ITS RANGE
OF PRODUCTS
Other themes that the Portuguese tourism
agency wants to highlight include wine tourism.
“We have been working for three years to get a
veritable offer. The launch was delayed by the
pandemic. This, in fact, has allowed us to train
specialists and fine-tune the offer,” says Mr
Pinheiro. The winesofportugal website offers
tours, activities and packages in all regions of
the country. “And there is a lot of hope for the
French market”... added the Turismo de Portugal
director.
“ Je suis raisonnablement
optimiste”
“I am reasonably
optimistic”
Madagascar. En 2022, Marie-
Joseph Malé vise un retour en
Asie (Inde/Thaïlande) et peutêtre
de nouvelles destinations
en France avec la mise en place
de la nouvelle Joint Venture avec
Corsair - prévue d’ici la fin 2021.
Confident of a return of tourists to Reunion Island, the
President of Air Austral, Marie-Joseph Malé, came to take
the pulse of the tourism industry at IFTM.
“You never know what can
happen, but I think we are finally
seeing a gradual exit from the
crisis. I am therefore reasonably
optimistic,” said Mr Malé.
The “national” carrier of La
Réunion enjoys the unconditional
support of national and regional
political authorities. And it is thus
ready to gradually rebuild the hub
in the Indian Ocean.
“We should have traffic to Paris for
the end of the year celebrations
almost equivalent to what it was
before the pandemic. We are now
working towards the return of our
regional lines,” he said. Among the
international destinations that will
reopen very quickly is Mauritius,
followed by Madagascar. In 2022,
Marie-Joseph Malé aims to
return to Asia (India/Thailand)
and perhaps new destinations in
France, with the establishment of
the new Joint Venture with Corsair
expected by the end of 2021.
Delta Air Lines confirme
“Depuis l’annonce, on
est effectivement sur une phase
ascendante. On sent un vrai désir
de voyage pour la destination et
cela devrait particulièrement se
traduire en 2022. La fin de l’année
est encore incertaine car à la date
d’aujourd’hui restent encore des
incertitudes sur le calendrier exact
de la réouverture des frontières et
sur certaines modalités”, explique
Béatrice de Rotalier.
Delta, qui travaille en joint venture
avec Air France-KLM, confirme
cependant son programme d’hiver.
Nous offrons sept vols quotidiens
sous nos propres couleurs à
destination d’Atlanta, Detroit,
Minneapolis, New York JFK et
Seattle. Air France dessert pour sa
part Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles,
San Francisco et Washington”,
précise-t-elle. Avec pour la saison
été, le retour de Cincinnati, Raleigh/
Durham et Salt Lake City.
Delta Air Lines confirms
enthusiasm of French travellers
for the United States
With Delta Airlines being the only US airline present at IFTM
Top Resa this year, Béatrice de Rotalier, the company’s Sales
Director for France expects a major hike in business for 2022
with the resumption of leisure traffic to the United States.
The upcoming reopening of the
United States for all vaccinated
visitors of course means a boom in
bookings. “Since the announcement,
we are indeed in an upward
phase”, said Ms de Rotalier. “There
is a real desire to travel to the
destination and this is expected to
take place in 2022. The end of the
year is still unsure, because at today’s
date there are still uncertainties
about the exact timetable for
the reopening of the borders and
certain modalities.”
Delta, which has a joint venture with
Air France-KLM, has confirmed its
winter programme. “We offer seven
daily flights in our own colours
to Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis,
New York JFK and Seattle. Air
France serves Chicago, Houston,
Los Angeles, San Francisco and
Washington,” said Ms de Rotalier.
“With for the summer season,
the return of Cincinnati, Raleigh/
Durham and Salt Lake City.”
