Eroticism in art has been part of the 

artistic experience since humans have 

created art. In Western civilizations, 

erotic content has usually been 

concealed or condemned. It is only 

recently that erotic art has been 

more overtly displayed and casually 

accepted by a wider social audience. 

U.K. artist Celia Hempton artist 

exemplifies eroticism in her art. She 

studied art at the Glasgow College of

Art with a BA in Fine Art and followed 

up with an MA in painting from the 

Royal College of Art. She currently 

lives in London her work has been 

shown in Europe, Asia, and across 

North and South America. She creates 

representational figurative and abstract 

figurative art including, paintings, 

sculptures, and installations. Much 

of her work is graphic and sensual 

representations of the sexuality of 

the human body. Her early works 

while completing her studies at

acquaintances who agreed to pose for 

her. These works were representative of 

body parts primarily male penises and 

rear views of testicles being prominent in 

the paintings, as shown in the paintings 

found here.

to emphasize 

the subjects 

with familiarity 

of the sensual. 

Faces of her subjects are not visible 

however her graphic depiction of the 

body displays a connection to the 

private aspects of sexuality but with an 

intimacy of the reality of the various 

models relationship to the artist. 

The more abstract yet graphic works 

by Hempton are from her series titled 

“Chat Random”. These paintings 

were created from her interactions on 

internet Chat rooms. usually with male 

subjects who are usually involved in a 

sexual gratification exercise. Hempton, 

in several interviews, described her 

painting process as having a laptop 

on a table in front of her with a canvas 

usually about the same size as the 

laptop. She flicks through various 

feeds on the websites until she finds

an image she wants to paint. Because 

these sites are international sometimes 

there is a conversational interaction 

and sometimes without conversation. 

She indicates to her online subject in 

some form of communication that she 

would like to paint the person in the 

conversation. Most of her paintings 

from these experiences show rapid 

brush strokes using bright colors that end 

up in somewhat abstract yet graphic 

examples of the activity being painted 

such as the masturbation painting with 

the red penis. 

She indicated that the model can 

usually see her working on the painting 

and sometimes the activity moves 

along quickly and sometimes the 

model decides to leave which also 

leaves the painting with an unfished 

look. She has stated that “the painting 

could go in any number of directions 

that may not have been conceived 

of before beginning, but ultimately 

she has the control. The impersonal 

interaction of erotic personal activities 

graphically portrayed with anonymity

Palm Desert Mayor Kathleen Kelly and

PALM SPRINGS, CA -- In another indication 

of the widespread enthusiasm throughout 

the Coachella Valley behind her bid 

for State Senate District 28, today Palm 

Springs Mayor Pro Tem Lisa Middleton 

announced the endorsements of Palm 

Desert Mayor Kathleen Kelly and Palm 

Desert Councilmember Karina Quintanilla.

Lisa Middleton is a neighborhood leader 

and longtime public servant who currently 

serves as the Mayor Pro Tem of Palm 

Springs. When she was first elected to the 

City Council in 2017, Middleton became 

the first transgender person elected to a 

political office in the state of California. 

On the Palm Springs City Council, Lisa 

helped deliver PPE and vaccines to 

residents during the COVID pandemic, 

led passage of a solar requirement on all 

new homes, increased the utilization of 

green energy by Palm Springs residents 

and businesses, helped support a 

booming local economy, increased 

funding for public safety services and 

street repairs, helped lead efforts for a 

generational public works project to bring

I’m looking internally. I’m interested in 

empathizing rather than objectifying, 

I’m trying to enter and connect.” 

More recent works of Celia Hempton 

called the “Surveillance series” takes 

random images from surveillance 

cameras of which she paints these 

images in the same brushstroke images 

as from the Chat Random series. During 

the Covid lockdown time during 2020 

she did a series of “self-portraits” which 

she indicates comes from the earlier 

nude series in which she might have 

done herself as well as models. In these 

paintings which are relatively small 

compared to the earlier series of nudes, 

she paints studies of her own vagina.

inequity, highlighted the unique 

challenges of LGBTQ seniors and led by 

example as a transgender woman in 

elected office. 

Additionally, Lisa currently serves on 

the Riverside County Transportation 

Commission (RCTC) and the Sunline 

Transit Board of Directors, where she works 

with partners from neighboring cities 

to provide high-quality transportation 

services to the region. She is also a 

dedicated regional and statewide leader 

as a member of the League of California 

Cities (Cal Cities) Board of Directors, 

including serving as Chair of the Cal Cities 

Revenue & Taxation Policy Committee, 

and the California State Department of 

Transportation Zero Traffic Fatalities Task 

Force. 

Prior to her election to the City Council, 

Lisa served as a member of the 

Palm Springs Planning Commission, 

Chairwoman of the Organized 

Neighborhoods of Palm Springs (ONE- 

PS), and Interim Executive Director of the 

Desert LGBTQ Center. 

In April 2019, Governor Newsom 

appointed Lisa to the Board of 

Administrators of the California Public 

Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), 

which provides pensions to 1.9 million 

people and health benefits to over 1.5 

million people with investment assets 

exceeding $450 billion. She serves as 

Chair of the organization’s Risk & Audit 

Committee and Vice-Chair of the 

Governance Committee.

This came after Lisa retired from her 

36 year-career with California’s State 

Compensation Insurance Fund, where 

she moved her way up the ranks. Her first 

job in government entailed performing 

workers’ compensation audits in the 

factories and meat-packing plants 

not far from where she grew up. At her 

retirement, she was the Senior Vice 

President of Internal Affairs; she also 

previously Chaired California’s Fraud 

Assessment Commission. 

A first-generation college student who 

grew up in a working-class community 

in East Los Angeles, Lisa is a graduate 

of East Los Angeles College, UCLA and 

USC, receiving her Master’s in Public 

Administration from USC. Lisa has been 

widely recognized for her work, earning 

awards from the California Workers 

Compensation Institute, Palm Springs 

Pride Association, Equality California, 

Democratic Women of the Desert, SAGE/ 

LGBT Senior Advocates, Desert LGBTQ 

Center and the California State Legislative 

LGBTQ Caucus. 

Together since 2000, Lisa and her wife 

Cheryl married in 2013 shortly after they 

moved to Palm Springs. Lisa is also the 

proud parent of two accomplished 

educators.

the live return of the colorful Palm 

Springs Pride Parade with the theme 

You Are Included. Known for its crystal 

blue skies and year-round sunshine, the 

city of Palm Springs and Palm Canyon 

The Parade is set to step off at 10:00 

a.m., on Sunday, November 7, in the 

Uptown Design District on N. Palm 

Canyon Drive at E. Tachevah Drive 

and travel south to downtown ending 

at the entrance to the Pride Festival at 

Amado Rd. Enjoy emcee commentary 

as parade contingents move along 

Palm Canyon Dr. and pass by official 

reviewing stands. The Parade usually 

lasts two hours and is a free event. 

President of Greater Palm Springs Pride 

Ron deHarte said, “Our Pride Week 

calls on the community to gather and 

embrace our diversity, our resilience, 

and raise awareness of the collective 

power of the LGBTQ community. Parade 

participants help raise awareness of

After publishing the DDG for many years, 

we have learned about successful bar 

connections. These tips are surefire to 

fail miserably, but still, it is fun having a

Smart Flu Prevention Tips for Workplaces 

(StatePoint) It’s estimated that 

influenza sent up to 400,000 

people to the hospital with flu 

complications and caused an 

estimated 22,000 deaths in the 

United States in the 2019-2020 flu 

season. As more Americans return 

to their workplaces, employers 

can play an important role in flu 

prevention. 

While experts aren’t exactly sure 

what the upcoming flu season 

will look like, relaxed COVID-19 

preventative measures such as 

physical distancing, reduced 

travel, staying home and strict 

mask-wearing policies, will likely 

result in the return of seasonal flu. 

And because of a mild 2020-2021 

influenza season, the 2021-2022 

flu season may begin early and 

could be severe. 

“All employers should actively 

promote healthy habits to help 

prevent the spread of flu, address 

barriers, and make it easier for 

employees to get vaccinated 

at their earliest opportunity,” 

says Albert Rizzo, M.D., chief 

medical officer of the American 

Lung Association. “Keeping staff 

healthy benefits not only individual 

workers, but employers too, 

making flu prevention not only an 

obligation, but a smart business 

strategy.” 

As part of its Fend Off Flu 

campaign, the American Lung 

Association in partnership with 

Anthem Foundation is offering 

these tips to help businesses and 

organizations prevent the spread 

of flu and other illnesses in the

the Parade will represent a country 

where it’s illegal to be LGBTQ. These 

include large parts of Africa, Asia, and 

the Middle East, with a high intolerance 

of homosexuality. Being gay in 

Afghanistan, Brunei, Mauritania, Yemen, 

Nigeria, Sudan, Somalia, Saudi Arabia, 

and Iran is one of the most significant 

“crimes,” and “offenders” face death. 

In countries where homosexuality is 

banned but not punished by death, 

“offenders” face being flogged or 

imprisoned. They are also stripped of 

their human and political rights and 

treated as third-class citizens. 

A surprise parade entry includes the 

Executive Board of the San Francisco 

Dykes on Bikes®️ Women’s Motorcycle 

Contingent, who will roll into Palm 

Springs for the organization’s first time in 

its 45-year history. The throttling engines, 

loud pipes, and cheering passengers 

will greet spectators and welcome all 

motorcyclists who ride in solidarity with 

the iconic, rebellious, independent 

women. The queer motorcyclists will 

be welcomed with thunderous rallying 

cries, making for a sight to see. 

Unique entries in the Parade include 

LGBTQ supportive businesses, 

organizations like Brothers of the Desert, 

PFLAG, Free Mom Hugs, DAP Health, 

Palm Springs city councilmembers,

employees, and the Human Rights 

Commission. The Desert Winds Freedom 

Band will return for their 21st year. This 

year will be the fifteenth appearance of 

the Palm Springs High School Spirit of the 

Sands Band and Visual Corps and the 

tenth appearance for Desert Hot Springs 

High School “Golden Eagle Regiment” 

Marching Band. 

The Palm Springs Pride parade is known 

for the significant number of youth 

marching groups participating from 

the region’s Gay-Straight Alliance 

organizations. Up to 500 students 

representing 56 GSAs are expected to 

march and represent their school. 

The Pride Parade and Festival is made 

possible by several dozen sponsors, 

including significant support from the 

City of Palm Springs, PS Resorts, Effen 

Vodka, Bud Light Seltzer, the Lighthouse

entirely in 2020 due to emerging 

COVID-19 concerns, health and safety 

practices for 2021 will be aligned with 

current CDC guidelines, as well as local 

and state government protocols.
