Cambridge Valley Cycling was 

founded in 2004 and comprises 

cyclists of all levels 

who enjoy riding and socializing 

together. The club holds 

regular rides during “the season,” 

three times a week. 

Rides usually begin at 6 p.m. 

for Mild Monday and 

Wednesday rides, and 9:30 

a.m. for Sunday rides. Most 

routes are primarily on paved 

roads with some dirt roads, 

but on occasion the club will 

try to schedule routes that 

are predominantly on dirt 

roads. Rides begin at the 

Cambridge Town Library 

parking lot. Other starting 

points include the Buskirk 

Covered Bridge, Greenwich, 

Salem, Arlington, and even 

Mt. Greylock. The regular 

season runs from March 

through the end of November. 

For some diehard members, 

the club will squeeze in winter 

rides, too. In addition to 

the regular riding schedule, 

members of the club participate 

in many local or regional

The Cambridge Valley Chamber of 

Commerce was established in 1997 by a 

small group of business people with a 

vision of improving the community and 

business opportunities. 

During the 20+ years the Chamber has 

brought many events and services to the 

Cambridge Valley. 

Through the years the Chamber created 

and has successfully organized 19 Balloon 

Festivals, organizing Christmas in 

Cambridge celebrations, and worked with 

other organizations to enhance the quality 

of life for the region. We have also 

designed and supplied the Welcome to 

Cambridge street banners to the Village 

along with other decorations, and annual 

spring flower planting. 

The Chamber has annually updated and 

distributed member brochures along with 

maintaining the website, plus taking part 

in regional discussions regarding tourism 

and economic development. We have joined 

with our adjoining chambers of Greenwich 

and Salem to help publicize a regional destination 

of The Battenkill Valley. 

The Chamber is the voice of its members. 

We strive to maintain and expand the 

local business climate, and invite visitors 

to participate in our annual events, and day 

to day experiences. The Cambridge Valley 

is a beautiful, warm and welcoming region.

Cambridge profiles 

A monastery in our midst 

On the gentle slope of 

Two-Top Mountain outside 

of Cambridge, are the 

churches and monks’ monastery 

of New Skete, 

Emmaus Guest House and 

the New Skete dog kennels, 

with the nuns’ monastery 

and cheesecake bakery 

nearby. 

Since 1966, New Skete 

has been a peaceful presence 

in southern 

Washington County. The 

Eastern Orthodox monks 

and nuns of New Skete 

strive to worship authentically 

and intensely and 

share with the broader 

community their efforts to 

translate the essentials of 

early Christian monasticism 

into American culture. 

In 1967 the monks 

cleared the steep and rocky 

land on the mountain to 

begin building their monastery. 

Today, in addition to 

the monks’ private living 

quarters, there are classrooms, 

a gift shop, two 

guest rooms and two parlors. 

In 1983 the community 

of the Companions of New 

Skete, a fellowship of lay 

people who seek to be formally 

connected with the 

New Skete communities to 

deepen their spiritual lives, 

built Emmaus House on 

the monks’ land, and it now 

serves as the monks’ main 

guest house. 

The monks’ love for 

their first German 

Shepherd dog Kyr led them 

to begin breeding, raising 

and socializing these beautiful 

animals. Today, the 

New Skete is located outside of Cambridge.

nun’s monastery.

themselves to providing 

the best possible companion 

dogs. Based on their 

experience and expertise, 

the monks have written 

extensively on the relationship 

of dogs and people. 

They also offer a course of 

dog training that includes 

standard AKC obedience 

and incorporates the values 

of the monastic environment. 

The nuns of New Skete 

arrived in 1969 and built 

their monastery about four 

miles west of the monks on 

Ashgrove Road. Our Lady 

of the Sign Monastery 

includes a kitchen, bedrooms, 

dining area, community 

rooms, a small chapel 

for daily matins and the 

hours, an art studio, guest 

areas, library, workshops 

and bakery, along with a 

tiny gift shop for the sale of 

the nuns’ famous cheesecakes, 

seasonal brandied 

fruitcakes and other treats. 

Three sisters and four 

employees typically bake 

twice a week following a 

highly efficient two-day 

process. They use 30-pound 

blocks of cream cheese and 

an amazing mixer that tips 

to pour the batter, saving 

the nuns from heavy lifting. 

New Skete has two 

churches at the monks’ 

monastery. The first is dedicated 

to the 

Transfiguration of Christ. 

This small temple was 

designed and built by the 

monks in 1969. It has a 

rough-hewn exterior 

topped by eight small but 

distinctive gold cupolas, or 

“onion” domes. The floor is 

made of green slate from 

nearby quarries, and the 

walls and pillars are covered 

with cedar and ash 

wood. 

As New Skete has 

grown, it became necessary 

to build a larger church to 

accommodate the monastic 

communities, the local 

parishioners and the growing 

number of retreatants 

and visitors. The new 

building, dedicated to Holy 

Wisdom, was built in 1983 

by the monks and local carpenters. 

Because of COVID-19, 

services at New Skete are 

closed to the public until 

further notice. Homilies

The monks’ guesthouse 

and nun’s guestroom are 

closed until further notice, 

and visitors are not allowed 

on the grounds or in the 

churches, kennels and gift 

shop at this time. 

Cheesecakes and cheese 

spreads are available in the 

freezer in the foyer of the 

nun’s monastery from 8 

a.m. to 8 p.m. every day, 

payment by cash or check 

only. The nuns’ online gift 

shop remains open, and 

orders are being shipped as

The non-profit closed its 

doors for the months of 

January and February of 

this year to save on expenses 

and to become stronger 

heading into the new year. 

In a letter to the Hubbard 

Hall Community posted on 

its website, executive and 

artistic director David 

Andrew Snider provided a 

teaser for what is to come 

this spring. 

“We will be back in 

March with ten weeks of 

spring classes slated to 

begin Monday, March 29,” 

he said. “We can’t wait to 

see you on campus again 

then.” 

The anticipated date for 

classes to be listed online is 

March 15.

Cambridge library ongoing since 1799 

The Cambridge Public 

Library traces its roots 

back to 1799, when subscriptions 

were raised to 

erect the Cambridge 

Washington Academy. For 

the first 100 years of its 

life, the library was 

housed in the school’s 

buildings. 

The present library, 

located on West Main 

Street, was opened to the 

public on May 1, 1904. It 

cost $9,030.99 to build. On 

March 7, 1907 the Regents 

of the University of the 

State of New York chartered 

the library. Since 

1987, library patrons have 

enjoyed the use of a 

1,200-square-foot addition 

to the original Colonial 

Revival structure. 

The library is funded by 

the public primarily 

through village taxes. It is 

able to receive additional 

revenue that is obtained 

by a school district proposition 

and contributions 

from the surrounding 

towns of Cambridge, 

Jackson and White Creek. 

It is chartered to serve 

the village of Cambridge 

Cambridge Public LIbrary 

but doesn’t stop its reach 

there. The library also 

serves residents in the surrounding 

areas, as well as 

vacationers and other visitors 

to the community. 

The COVID-19 pandemic 

has forced all businesses 

to shake things up to provide 

their usual services, 

and the Cambridge Public 

Library is no exception. 

It began running curbside 

pick-up operations 

back on June 23. You can 

order your books online at

edu/ or over the phone by 

calling 518-677-2443. 

Once you have done 

that, a member of the 

library staff will call to 

set up an appointment 

when the items are ready 

to be picked up. They will 

set up an appointment for 

you to pick up your items. 

Parking for curbside 

pick-up will be in the 

parking lot between the 

library and the bank only. 

Items that are ready to be 

picked up will be bagged 

and left on a table outside 

during your designated 

time slot. 

Items can also be placed 

directly into your trunk 

upon request. 

Last July the library 

was able to open on some 

days for patrons to browse 

the library’s selection, but 

that ended on Nov. 13 

when it went back to 

strictly curbside pick-up.

participated in lighting up 

windows every night 

throughout the village. 

“It was kind of an open 

call to the community,” 

Brooks said. “It was mostly 

new participants in 

2020 from 2019.” 

The Advent windows 

are individually designed 

by those participating and 

can be pretty entertaining. 

Brooks said some 

designs this year and in 

past years were Northern 

Lights, ”The Grinch” and 

“everything in between” 

themed lights to celebrate. 

“Some communities do 

a theme, we just left it 

open,” Brooks said. 

With COVID-19 interrupting 

many family traditions 

around the holiday 

season, Brooks was 

elated to see so many families 

driving around the 

mapped loop of displayed 

lights and make the most 

out of the situation. 

“I think it’s incredibly 

rewarding,” Brooks said. 

“So many of the usual traditions 

around the holidays 

were ones we 

couldn’t participate in.” 

When asked how this 

event was able to spread 

like wildfire over the 

course of two years, 

Brooks responded by saying 

word-of-mouth, the 

Cambridge Chamber of 

Commerce, the “Holiday 

Windows in Cambridge, 

NY” Facebook page and 

Front Porch Forum have 

all been useful in her 

efforts of boosting community 

morale. 

She hopes other surrounding 

towns and villages 

can take after 

Cambridge with the idea. 

“It’s the kind of idea a 

community could really 

take and adapt,” Brooks 

said. “There’s nothing too 

proprietary about this… I 

encourage other communities 

to try this.”

Food aid ongoing in Cambridge 

Affiliated with the Regional Food 

Bank of Northeastern New York, 

Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry and 

the Christian Outreach Center are 

devoted to offering significant portions 

of food from the four major 

food groups as well as paper supplies 

to those in need. 

Vicki Bartholomew runs the show 

of around 30 volunteers assisting 

anywhere from 120 to 150 families a 

week. 

With COVID-19, the Cambridge 

food pantry at 59 South Park Street 

has had to make a few changes in the 

distribution of goods to recipients. 

“Now, they just pull into the driveway, 

I will go out to the driveway and 

see how many people are in their 

family, we fill the boxes accordingly 

and put it in their trunks,” 

Bartholomew said. 

Bartholomew added that COVID-19 

has not interrupted the backpack 

program for kindergarten to grade 12 

students in the Cambridge Central 

School District. 

“I think we have 42 or 45 families 

now,” she said. 

The backpack program provides 

breakfast and lunch for weekends 

and during vacations when needy 

students are not receiving breakfast 

or lunch at school. Cambridge

Central School distributes the backpacks 

to students on Friday afternoons, 

as the food pantry gives the 

necessary goods to the district to do 

so. 

The weekly Friday community 

lunch program and Code Blue affiliation 

have stopped at the food pantry 

because of COVID-19. 

Since 2015, the Code Blue site had 

provided warm shelter for those who 

were homeless or had inadequate 

heating during the winter’s coldest 

nights. Beginning in January, Loaves 

and Fishes used to be open from 6 

p.m. to 8:30 a.m. on nights when the 

temperature went below 20 degrees 

or the weather was deemed dangerous. 

Bartholomew feels a great sense 

of joy giving back to her community 

in any way that she can. 

“It’s just a very rewarding job to 

know that we can help somebody in 

need,” Bartholomew said. 

The pantry hours are Wednesdays 

from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Fridays from 4 

p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 

a.m. to 1 p.m.
