plan will be revised following 

feedback from affected residents 

and businesses. 

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport 

Agency has received 980 submissions 

on its proposal to install 

the flyover, alongside intersection 

and possible speed limit 

changes. 

A spokeswoman said there 

had been 875 online map comments, 

77 email/letter submissions 

and 28 freepost feedback 

forms. It would be releasing a 

summary of the submissions 

within the next fortnight. 

The proposed flyover bridge 

across State Highway 1, connecting 

residential Rolleston 

from Rolleston Drive North, 

with the industrial hub, from 

Jones Rd north of the Hoskyns 

Rd intersection, has been hugely 

controversial. 

Jones Rd businesses have 

opposed the current plan as it 

reduces accessibility from the 

highway. The district council has 

also rung alarm bells, saying it 

gives rise to new safety concerns, 

disadvantages businesses and 

does not support growth and 

prosperity. 

Consultation was undertaken 

in July and August. 

The Waka Kotahi spokesperson 

said the roading authority’s 

project team was now working 

through all the feedback, prior 

to the next round of community 

consultation. 

“When we will share a revised 

plan and more detail for people 

who are interested,” they said. 

The community feedback had 

contributed to ongoing analysis 

as part of assessing the best 

design option. 

Many agreed there needed to 

be a solution for crossing the 

busy highway and railway. 

“A key safety problem for this 

project is providing an alternative 

to people turning right onto 

the busy highway and risking 

a crash with oncoming traffic.

Man charged 

with receiving 

on 24-hour 

home curfew 

A 50-YEAR-OLD arrested in 

the wake of thefts from building 

sites is on a 24-hour curfew as he 

awaits his next court appearance. 

Dion Rochford appeared in the 

Christchurch District Court on 

October 19, facing 18 charges for 

receiving. He was remanded to 

reappear on November 10. 

Rochford was arrested following 

police executing a search 

warrant at his Darfield address 

earlier this month, uncovering 

tens of thousands of dollars of allegedly 

stolen property, including 

doors,windows, appliances and 

tools. 

The items were allegedly stolen 

in a spate of more than 20 burglaries, 

in the Yaldhurst, Rolleston, 

West Melton and Darfield areas. 

Police arrested Rochford on October 

18, and held him in custody 

prior to his court appearance the 

next day. 

Senior Sergeant Stephen 

McDaniel said prior to the appearance 

that police would be 

opposing bail. 

However, the application was 

unsuccessful. Rochford has 

instead been remanded on bail 

to November 10, with conditions 

including the around-the-clock 

curfew at his home address.

Vaughan said the nationwide 

figures were grim for those who 

haven’t yet been able to break 

into the market.

“The surge puts the squeeze 

on those saving for a deposit,” he 

said. 

House-hunters are now spending 

about $223,000 more than 

they did a year ago on the typical 

home, and the surge in prices is 

taking place against a backdrop 

of a slump in listings. 

However, the Reserve Bank’s 

decision to raise the OCR and 

tighten lending could curb any 

post-lockdown jump, he added.

three months were already telling 

him that story. 

A four-bedroom house on 

Dewar Ln at Prebbleton sold 

for $1,135,000 on September 24, 

previously selling for $735,000 

in 2015. A five-bedroom house 

on Rossington Drive at West 

Melton sold for $1,1370,000 on 

September 24, previously being 

taken off the market in 2019 

when it did not sell for its listed 

price of $999,000. 

A 5000 sq m section on Penberley 

Rd at Prebbleton sold for 

$932,500 on July 15, exceeding 

the expectation of agents who 

thought it would reach a figure 

in the $700,000s. 

Shefford is not jumping for 

joy over the booming real estate 

market. Rather, he is tired of 

having to let would-be buyers 

down with the news they had 

not been successful in their bid 

to own a home or section. 

“That’s the hard part, ringing 

the people back. There’s that 

many people missing out on 

properties,” Shefford said. 

One of his clients had 

written up 23 sales and 

purchase agreements in the last 

three months, missing out each 

time.

‘Idiot’ driver 

smashes into 

couple’s car 


AN ELDERLY Lincoln couple 

are recovering after a car crash on 

Gerald St. 

The couple were travelling south 

about 1pm on Tuesday last week, 

when a motorist behind them 

drove to the left of their vehicle. 

The motorist then veered right and 

hit their vehicle’s side and front. 

“Thank God for seat belts, they 

saved us,” the man said. 

He and his wife were “kindly” 

taken in and looked after by the 

staff at the nearby Property Brokers. 

The couple were taken to hospital 

by ambulance. They are now recovering 

from bruising to their ribs 

and sternum from the seat belts. 

The accident follows Lincoln residents 

calling for lower speed limits 

along Gerald St, which is becoming 

busier as the township grows. 

However, the man said while 

it “probably wouldn’t hurt” to 

lower the speed limit, it would not 

have made any difference in this 

incident. 

“You can’t legislate against idiots, 

and that’s all it was, idiotic driving,” 

he said. 

A police spokesperson said officers 

were investigating and no 

charges had been laid “at this stage.”

THE ELLESMERE A&P 

Association managed to pull off 

a tremendous 150th anniversary 

show, says its president. 

Andrew Benny said while a 

decision was made 12 days out not 

to open the much-loved Selwyn 

Spring Show to the public, the 

re-formated event was a success, 

measured by the huge support it had 

from the community. 

The show was held over three 

days the weekend before last, with 

each section in a defined space, in 

order to abide by the alert level 2 

restrictions. 

While crowd favourites such 

as arts and crafts, shearing, and 

Selwyn’s Got Talent were all 

cancelled, many other events were 

live-streamed via the association’s 

Facebook page. 

“The foundation of the show has 

always been the competitors that 

give up their time to bring out their 

livestock year after year, and this 

year was no disappointment,” Benny 

said. 

Marketing and promotions 

convener Alastair Barnett was 

surprised the community was so 

enthusiastic in such uncertain 

times. 

“We were quite overwhelmed 

with the number of entries we got,” 

Barnett said. 

Sponsorships exceeded 

expectations, a testament to the 

high standing the show had in the 

community. 

A fourth-generation cattle 

exhibitor at the show, Dean Geddes, 

was just glad to be able to show 

off his animals again. Rangiora 

and Canterbury A&P shows were 

both cancelled due to the level 2 

restrictions, making it difficult for 

Canterbury stud breeders to display 

their livestock before going to 

auction later in the year.

“It’s a marketing tool really,” 

Geddes said, referring to the

of annual income, so A&P shows 

were vital to ensure the right buyers 

turned up to the auction.

South Island and Ellesmere A&P 

wins for his cattle.

Legionnaires’ cases 

prompt warning 

SELWYN HAS had its first cases 

of legionellosis this spring. 

Community and Public Health 

reported one case for the week 

ending October 15, and one 

for the week ending October 

8, following zero cases for the 

month of September. There were 

three cases in Christchurch for 

the same month. 

Canterbury medical officer of 

health, Dr Ramon Pink, urged 

gardeners to protect themselves 

against the legionnaires’ disease 

bacteria this spring. 

“You can mistake it for 

the flu. Most people get high 

fever, muscle aches, fatigue 

and headache, and some get 

diarrhoea, vomiting and chest 

pains,” Pink said. 

“In severe cases, people 

develop dry cough that could 

lead to pneumonia that requires 

hospitalisation.” 

A Community and Public 

Health annual campaign was this 

year highlighting the importance 

of using the right gear when 

gardening, particularly when 

handling compost and potting 

mix. He said there was typically 

an increase during the months 

of September, October and 

November the gardening season. 

SAFETY: Always use gloves when handling compost or 

potting mix, a case of legionnaires’ disease has been 

recorded in Selwyn. 

In 2019, there were 49 recorded 

cases of legionnaires’ disease 

across Canterbury, West Coast 

and South Canterbury and last 

year, there were 52 recorded 

cases. 

“If you are experiencing the 

symptoms, contact your general 

practice team immediately, and 

let them know you have been 

handling potting mix or compost 

recently,” Pink said. 


THe illness may be mild but 

can sometimes be fatal. Anyone 

can catch legionnaires’ but 

people over 50 years of age, 

those with a long-term illness 

(particularly lung disease), 

people with low immunity, and 

smokers are most at risk.

“Photography has always been 

a passion. Most of it is inspired 

by where I live, and the garden, I 

love gardening,” she said. 

“I’ve just started doing this 

digital altering. I don’t always do 

it, but Silver Daisies just has little 

tweaks.”

Selwyn Times readers continue to express opinion on the Government’s Three Waters reform proposals and other water 

issues in the district 

A few comments on the Three 

Waters reform in relation to the 

onslaught of recent articles. 

Given the current state of 

affairs nationally, reform of some 

kind is inevitable. The first step 

of such reform is of course to 

engage with stakeholders, which 

is currently under way with this 

proposal. 

Yet a proportion of 

commentators seem to 

misunderstand the process as 

they outright reject the proposal 

at this stage, on the grounds that 

it doesn’t yet answer all their 

questions. 

Which, of course, it cannot yet 

do while it is still under initial 

consultation. 

Another argument being used 

in several regions is that this 

is unfair to councils that have 

managed their water assets well, 

like Selwyn. 

Bear in mind that Kiwis 

are a very mobile population 

and the likelihood is that we, 

or our progeny, will at some 

stage migrate to other parts 

of the country. So this would 

ultimately be to everyone’s 

benefit regardless of where they 

live now. 

Finally Federated Farmers 

argument that “if our elected 

representatives don’t deliver, we 

can eject them at election time” 

in last week’s Selwyn Times, is 

precisely the mechanism that 

created the looming water asset 

and infrastructure crises the 

country is facing. 

Generations of councils 

delivering nice-to-haves to 

essentially buy votes, while 

ignoring crucial infrastructure 

investment and environmental 

protections because it wasn’t a 

headline or vote grabber at the 

time.

Nitrates 

I wonder if anyone else sees 

the irony of the Selwyn District 

Council paying up to $25,000 for 

a feasibility study on the options 

for extracting nitrate from 

community water supplies? 

This is the same Selwyn 

District Council who loaned 

$5 million to the Central 

Plains Water Scheme back in 

2012. This loan enabled the 

giant irrigation scheme to go 

ahead. A scheme which, under 

its Resource Consent, allows 

1000-tonnes of nitrate, per year, 

to be leached into the Selwyn 

environment. (as a comparison, 

Environment Canterbury has set 

nitrate leaching limits for Selwyn 

community sewage systems at 

62-tonnes, per year). 

One of the main arguments 

for the CPW scheme was the 

economic benefits it would bring 

to the district. So perhaps the 

main economic beneficiaries 

of the scheme, the 400 private 

Part of the Central Plains 

Water Scheme. 

shareholders, should be asked 

by the SDC to stump up for 

the study costs, instead of the 

minimally polluting ratepayers. 

Yeah right. 

The study costs are actually 

mere chicken feed if a nitrate 

extraction proposal goes ahead 

as it is a notoriously expensive 

procedure. If it did, I wonder 

who would pay for it? – Mike

longer that we are able to keep clothes in circulation the better. It 

is a means of helping reduce the negative impacts of the fashion 

industry on our environment. 

There is no payment for entry or for clothes. The event provides 

a chance to enjoy changing one’s wardrobe, as well as keeping 

resources circulating.

HOPE Presbyterian is reaching 

out to its community as 

churches once did in times gone 

by. 

The network of churches officially 

opened the base for its new 

social enterprise, Hope Funerals 

Christchurch, at Hornby on 

Wednesday. 

Managing director Peter 

Hunter, of Prebbleton, said the 

church’s leaders chose to get 

into the funeral industry as they 

looked for ways to reach out and 

help the community. 

Hope Funerals had a fair 

pricing structure and would 

be distributing profits back to 

the community throughout 

the Hope Presbyterian area of 

Hornby and Selwyn, where it 

has churches at Rolleston, West 

Melton and Halkett. 

Hunter said historically 

churches were involved in the 

funeral industry, although in 

modern times it had become 

dominated by commercial 

operators. 

Having a church operate the 

business brought the benefits of 

having a caring, compassionate 

and Christian philosophy at its 

centre. 

“It’s the church working in the 

community, but it’s reaching out 

in another way to help the community,” 

Hunter said. 

He said the job of funeral 

director was a special one. 

“You have to lead families 

through a very difficult time, but 

be very caring and supportive as 

you do it.” 

Hope Funerals was established 

about 12 months ago when 

Hope Presbyterian bought and 

rebranded Heritage Funerals. 

It has since set up its base in a 

historic cottage next door to the 

Hornby church building, which 

was officially opened last week.

to have finally got to the stage

Moderator of the Presbyterian 

Church, the Right Reverend 

Hamish Galloway of Christchurch. 

“I think it is a tremendous 

signal to the community that we 

are here to help,” Hunter said. 


ENVIRONMENT Canterbury 

and the Ministry for the 

Environment have launched a 

documentary about a Selwyn 

wetland project. 

Whakaora Te Ahuriri – A 

Wetland for Te Waihora was 

shown for the first time 

at the 11th International 

Wetlands Conference held 

virtually in Christchurch 

last week. 

The 26min film, which 

celebrates the creation of a 

constructed wetland at Te 

Waihora, has since racked 

up 250 views, as of Friday at 

noon, on YouTube. 

The culturally-led project cost 

$14,340, excluding staff time. 

Fifty-seven per cent of this was 

funded by ECan, which produced 

the film, and 43 per cent 

by the Ministry for the Environment’s 

Freshwater Improvement 

Fund. 

An ECan spokesperson said 

the regional council funding 

element excluded staff time and 

minor costs yet to be added. 

As narrator, ECan councillor 

Craig Pauling, of Ngāi Te Ruahikihiki, 

said Te Ahuriri was 

a place where his people came 

together.

“It was renowned as a significant 

mahinga kai for Ngāi 

Tahu. We sold Canterbury to the 

Crown but reserved our mahinga 

kai. It didn’t quite work out 

that way,” Pauling said. 

“We started writing letters 

asking for the drainage to stop. 

We became impoverished in 

our own landscape. We 

made claims in court. 

The judges said no, 

the land was already 

privatised. We didn’t 

give up. Ngāi Tahu led 

the charge on wanting

We asked the regional 

council to lead it,” he

“There was then a process of 

coming together and working 

through the design of a 

constructed wetland. It means 

upholding the values of a place

back to a waterway.”

Danger in looking after menagerie at 

Willowbank Wildlife 

Reserve’s founder 

Michael Willis has 

survived many an 

encounter with the 

feathered and furry 

creatures in his care, 

including having half 

his thumb bitten off. 

The Halkett man talks 

to Susan Sandys 

What motivated you to 

establish Willowbank? 

Willowbank was an 

establishment of a dream I 

had since I was a wee boy. I 

come from a large family of six 

children, and we are all back 

country orientated in a big way. 

My father established a bach 

up in the Craigieburn Valley. I 

kept a whole lot of pets. I had 

hares, keas, possums and hawks. 

I always wanted to have a zoo, 

ever since I was big enough to 

read Gerald Durrell and Richard 

Attenborough. When I came 

back to New Zealand in my 20s, 

I looked for a block of land to 

establish a zoo on. I had worked 

in the United Kingdom with 

animals, in a wildlife refuge. 

In Africa I was offered a job in 

Kruger National Park but came 

home instead.

And you found that block 

of land, where Willowbank is 

today, at Northwood, in your 

home city of Christchurch? 

I was buying some eggs and 

asked the farmer if he knew of 

any land for sale. He pointed me 

in that direction. It was 11 acres, 

covered in gorse and broom and 

rubbish and so on. It’s an old 

riverbed that the Waimak used 

to come through. So I bought it. 

It was 1968. It was ideal for what 

I wanted, near the airport, near 

the main road. 

When did you open it? 

It was 1974 before I could 

open it as a wildlife park. I had 

no money, so it was a very poor 

excuse for a wildlife park. I built 

a house on the property, we 

(myself and former wife Kathy 

and then two children) lived 

there. I couldn’t even afford to 

have an entrance box. I had an 

old Land-Rover and sat in the 

front seat with a shoe box, and 

put the money in that. It opened 

Labour Weekend in 1974 and 

the rest is history I suppose. All 

the money we got, we just kept 

putting back into it. 

Did you envisage it would 

become the facility it is today? 

No, at that stage I wanted 

a zoo. So I kept on getting 

animals. I kept on getting 

monkeys, mountain lions, we 

had camels, we had agoutis, we 

had otters, we had chimpanzees. 

The chimpanzees were the 

tipping point, when I realised 

there was really no future in 

keeping exotic animals in New 

Zealand. We’ve got so much 

exciting and valuable wildlife 

that needs preservation, I 

decided there was no future in 

being a zoo. So my childhood 

dream didn’t shatter, but it 

changed completely. I changed 

the direction of the park 

totally to become New Zealand 

focussed. 

Are there any exotic animals 

at Willowbank today? 

We still have otters, there’s 

talk that New Zealand had 

an otter. We have capybara, 

gibbons, capuchin monkeys, 

lemurs and we have exotic birds 

like macaws. We try and have 

a story of New Zealand when 

people visit here. It starts with 

introduced animals, then it goes 

into the exotic sections. They 

fit into the story of zoos in New 

Zealand.

There is a big focus on New 

Zealand species? 

The story finishes with the New 

Zealand section. This is where we 

breed all our kiwi, and we have 

takahe and tuatara and a wide 

range of native species. When 

I changed the direction of the 

park, by that stage I had been 

to Arapawa Island mustering 

goats, and saw the wild sheep 

up there. That led to a whole 

field of conservation which I 

hadn’t thought about, which was 

conserving rare breeds in New 

Zealand. 

Did otters live in New 

Zealand? 

The Southland Maori had an 

animal called waitoreke. They 

described this four-legged animal 

that lived there. When Cook 

was here, his men saw an otterlike 

animal in Fiordland. Early 

explorers and others reported 

seeing otters. There has really 

been no sightings since about 

1954. One theory is (they came 

from a ship after) Tamil Indians 

wrecked in the area. 

Otters are very cute creatures. 

They are dynamite to handle. 

I have had them in the house, 

we have bred them and reared 

babies. We bred some and the 

mother couldn’t feed them and 

we had a cavalier king charles 

spaniel belonging to my son. She 

just had some pups, so I put the 

two otter cubs on with her, she 

looked after them with her pups. 

So they bounced round with the 

pups. They are dynamite, they 

smell very fishy. They would get 

in the pot cupboard, fly around 

the pot cupboard, they like 

poking into everything. 

When you look back on 

the years that you kept exotic 

animals, do you have any 

regrets at all? 

The chimpanzees were an 

interesting one. It’s not like 

keeping an animal, it’s like 

keeping your grandmother in a 

cage. They are hugely intelligent, 

hugely emotional. The public 

used to jump up and down 

outside their cage, hooting and 

scratching themselves and so 

on. The chimps would sit there 

watching them, wondering what 

the hell they were doing. It used 

to upset the chimps actually, 

they would be quiet after a busy 

weekend. It makes you realise 

you shouldn’t have them. We 

only got them because they were 

in a zoo in Dunedin that closed 

down, and there was no place for 

them to go. I took them on, but 

it took me about 12 years to find 

a home for them. They went to 

Mogo Zoo in Australia. 

Was that a happy ending for 

their story? 

Charlie the male, who was a

and help their father run the park. 

real favourite friend of mine, 

he was killed by another 

chimpanzee. It wasn’t entirely 

their (the zoo’s) fault, they were 

trying to integrate him. It was 

good for the female, she later 

went to Rockhampton Zoo. She 

is with a crew there, and she has 

had babies and she is in a good 

breeding programme. They 

were probably as happy as they 

had ever been with us, we spent 

a lot of time with them. I had 

a wonderful relationship with 

them, even if Charlie took half 

my thumb off, he bit it off. 

He wouldn’t have done that on 

purpose? 

It was deliberate. I had some 

sunflower seed and I had my 

hand like that (cupped) against 

the wire, and he was picking the 

seed out of my hand. Somebody 

called to me and I turned my 

head away to answer them, and 

his finger shot out and grabbed 

my hand and pulled it against 

the netting so my thumb went 

through and he went “bang”, got 

it. 

Were you still friends with 

him after that? 

He was strutting around 

the place weeks after that, full 

of himself, top dog. So after a 

while, when I got myself back 

together again, I went down 

there and had a plasterer’s 

trowel in my hand. I put some 

sunflower seed just outside the 

cage. He put his fingers through 

to get the sunflower seed. I 

went “whack” (smacking his 

fingers with the trowel). Then 

we were the best of friends. He 

was lovely, you would go down 

there, I would be able to hold 

his hand. We would kiss each 

other through the netting and 

he would hoot away, we had a 

wonderful relationship. He 

knew all the hierarchy of the 

staff, who had just started, 

who was the boss and who 

wasn’t. He knew who to have on.

special.

‘She was going to kill me’ 

Have you had other injuries 

from animals? 

I had an emu that knocked 

the hell out of me. I had to be 

stitched up from that. Both 

hands were ripped up by a wild 

boar which just flew at me. I was 

going backwards with my hands 

out, and he just ripped my hands 

to pieces. I was almost killed 

by a highland cow. She was bad 

tempered. She had a sick calf, I 

wanted to give it antibiotics. I 

went out to bring her into the 

yards. She took one look at me 

and she just went straight into 

me, tossed me in the air, got me 

on the ground. I was hanging 

onto her horns, one in each hand. 

She had her head in my chest, 

she was ripping around and 

punching holes in my thighs. She 

threw me over the fence. I was 

really badly bruised and holed. 

She was going to kill me. 

As well as having all the 

animals at Willowbank, do you 

have pets at home? 

I have some exotic parrots, 

macaws, cockatoos, black 

cockatoos, some cochin chooks, 

couple of donkeys, couple of 

horses, african four-horned 

sheep, african pygmy sheep, 

meatmaster sheep. I have 

miniature zebu cattle, which are 

the only ones in New Zealand 

that have been recorded, 

miniature galloway cattle, 

chinese geese. 

What brought you to Halkett? 

I’ve been here just over 20 

years. It was very busy living at 

Willowbank. We were open day 

and night, and tourists here all 

the time. I had always thought 

of getting another block, and 

using it as a runoff to support 

the park. I never had any money,

but enough to buy a rough piece 

of land that I thought was ideal. 

I built a bit of a cottage there 

to start with. Every weekend, 

I would drop a pine tree and 

I would mill it by hand, and I 

would turn it into beams. After 

five years I had enough beams 

and everything cut to build a 

house. We (myself and partner 

Sue) had no power, so started off 

with four solar panels and lived 

like that for ages. Now we have 

got quite a big solar array, and 

a big vegetable garden, we grow 

most of our food. 

What is your role today at 

Willowbank? 

Managing director. My 

daughter Kirsty and son Mark 

have both come back into the 

park in different roles. They are 

both directors. Kirsty and her 

husband Dale Hedgcock are here 

day to day. She does the internal 

management, and he manages 

the outside to a large extent. 

Mark does the promotional work 

and public relations. I don’t feed 

the animals now. That’s why I 

have my place at home, I have to 

have my animals. 

Do you have any favourite 

animals at Willowbank? 

Everybody asks me that. No, 

they are all different. Some are 

pretty, some have got a fantastic 

personality, some are serious, 

some want to love you and you 

can’t get away from them. They 

are all different, so I don’t really 

have a favourite one.

A new pilot programme is helping seven Selwyn young people blaze a new trail to work. 

The group is taking part in the new Trailblazers internship, trying out roles at the Council and 

learning skills to help get work-ready. 

Trailblazers is a partnership between the Council, Youth Pathways (Te Ara Rangatahi) and the 

Ministry of Social Development to support young people who are unemployed or working less 

than 30 hours a week. 

The group will trial roles such as Duty Manager, Event Manager, Recreation Assistant, Library/ 

Customer Service Assistant and Programme Coordinator, and complete an additional 20 hours of 

practical experience in their area of interest. 

Youth Pathways tutor Moses Faletolu says he has been impressed by the highly skilled, wellmotivated 

group, mostly fresh out of university. 

“We’re focusing on wellbeing and cultural wellbeing, learning their mihi and pepeha, setting goals 

and exploring their strengths. They’re a great group. They’ve all got a unique skill set they bring to 

the group and that mix makes the group pretty special.” 

Intern Billy McDonald says he applied for Trailblazers as a good way to transition to work after 

completing his degree in Political Science and Sociology. 

The work experience is very valuable at a time when a lot of people are moving roles and the job 

market is less certain due to the pandemic, he says. 

“For the first six months of this year I had been job hunting. I was going up against a lot of people 

who were in their 30s and 40s with a lot of experience in other roles so an internship like this gives 

you a foothold. I can say I have had experience I wouldn’t have and apply for things I couldn’t 

have before.” 

New event applications process launching 

Event organisers will find it easier to get started with a new online application process with the Council. 

The Council is bringing forward a new online Events Application form, which will be available from 

Friday 29 October and will be working with event organisers as they become familiar with this easy to 

use online process. 

The new automated system – built in response to feedback from event organisers – will help organisers 

to submit applications and keep track of their progress as the application proceeds through various 

Council teams within specified timeframes. 

The purpose of the online process is to make an event application to Council as simple, reliable and 

quick as possible. This could be for such matters as obtaining necessary permissions and consents, 

permission to use land, organising road closures and rubbish bins. 

What’s new: 

· A new look with intuitive steps 

· Ability to save the progress and return to the 

application at another time 

· Ability to view the progress of the application 

· Connect directly with council departments when 

more information is required 

· Connect all events applications into one process 

such as: 

a. Public Places Bylaw 

b. Liquor Licenses 

Mayoral Relief Fund open 

c. Drones Application 

d. Building exemption 

e. Traffic Management 

· Ability to copy a previous application 

· Unique identifier – so progress can be tracked 

via Customer Services 

· Ability to share information with FENZ and Police, 

so they are aware of the events happening in our 

district (with organisers permission) 

The Council has a fund available to support residents of Selwyn who have suffered 

hardship or damage to their property as a result of the May 2021 flooding.

Faces of Selwyn – a colder, 

yet peaceful and quieter start 

to the day 

One hot day in 2007, Hafsa Ahmed and her family began a one way 

trip to New Zealand, to complete her PhD at Lincoln University. 

She says the change in climate was a bit of a shock. 

“I came straight to Christchurch on a winter’s morning from 35 

degrees to 11 degrees average. We’ve never experienced, when we 

were in India anything close to this winter.” 

Since then, Hafsa has worked for several different organisations 

across Canterbury, and now at lectures Lincoln University. 

Through the Lady Khadija Charitable Trust she founded five years 

ago, Hafsa volunteers in the community, taking on projects focusing 

on social cohesion. 

Born into a Muslim family, Hafsa said coming to New Zealand 

helped her to rediscover her faith. 

“When I would travel to Selwyn pretty much every day for my 

university I would get that time to reflect and that has strengthened 

me in my faith.” 

After the March 15 2019 terrorist attack, Hafsa established a 

weekly podcast, Open Table, on PlainsFM – talking to people of 

different faiths, covering a range of difficult topics and finding a 

common ground. 

“For me it’s about grass root level, that we can influence change 

and allow people to have that reflection. Even with the podcast, it’s 

not telling them, ‘This is what you need to do’, it’s a conversation so 

they can listen to it and do that reflection on their own.” 

After moving to Selwyn two years ago, Hafsa says she enjoys 

being away from the busy roads. And while she hasn’t got used to 

New Zealand’s cold winters, she doesn’t miss the traffic or the hot 

Indian summers. 

“I don’t think I would trade one for the other. I miss it, at times, 

I’m homesick especially when it’s festival time.You miss the whole 

experience of festivities… but there are times when we go, oh thank 

god we are here because summer is like very hot there, you’re 

hitting 45 degrees!”

Have your say on the future of Selwyn parks 

Selwyn residents are being asked for their say on future planning for the district’s parks looked after by 

the Council. 

The Council is preparing a Selwyn District Parks Management Plan to give strategic direction on parks 

across the district, their use and management. 

The first stage of consultation on the plan opens on Wednesday 27 October and is open until 

Wednesday 8 December. 

The Council has plans for some individual Council parks in Selwyn, but this overarching plan will help 

the Council make consistent and quality day-to-day decisions about how our parks are used and 

managed as well as what needs to be considered when developing and enhancing our parks in the 

future. The latter is especially important considering our district’s population is rapidly growing, as well 

as other factors such as climate change. 

The plan will also give certainty to the public and mana whenua on how the Council will protect and 

manage the parks network generally, as well as what it wants to achieve on individual parks so that they 

remain relevant and meet community needs in the future. 

The Council wants Selwyn communities to help shape 

the draft plan by letting us know what’s important to 

them when considering the future use and management 

of Selwyn parks. 

We want to hear what people value the most about 

Selwyn parks, how they could be improved so people 

use them more and any issues across the parks network. 

Anyone can give feedback by visiting

All the feedback received will inform the draft Selwyn 

District Parks Management Plan which will go out for

Domain Road to Irwell Rakaia Road, Cowans Road from Feredays Road to Southbridge Leeston Road

install insulation in their 

homes. 

Canterbury charitable 

trust Community Energy 

Action has installed insulation 

in 1500 homes 

in Canterbury and the 

West Coast in the last 12 

months, mostly free of 

charge to the homeowner. 

The registered provider 

of Government insulation 

subsidies has helped more 

than 100,000 people since 

2009. The trust tops up the 

Government’s Warmer 

Kiwi Homes subsidy level 

of 80 per cent to 100 per 

cent, resulting in free 

insulation for eligible 

householders. 

Chief executive Caroline 

Shone said the subsidies 

were mainly for householders 

with low incomes, 

who often struggled to 

make ends meet. 

“They simply cannot 

afford the insulation they 

need to keep warm and 

healthy at home, at an 

affordable price. Having 

a healthy home is a basic 

human right and we are 

privileged that we can 

help,” Shone said. 

Shone said Selwyn 

made up only 10 per cent 

of the trust’s work area. 

This was because a large 

proportion of the homes 

in the district were built 

since regulations required 

insulation to be installed. 

In the last year the trust 

had installed insulation 

in 43 homes in Selwyn. 

They were situated 

in the older parts of 

Selwyn, many in rural 

areas around Lincoln, 

Prebbleton, Leeston, 

Darfield and Rolleston, as 

well as Coalgate, Sheffield, 

Hororata, Charing Cross 

and Doyleston. 

About half of the residents 

assisted were over 

65.

a health perspective, as it 

could make the difference 

between staying in their 

homes or having to move,”

Little River Gallery October 30-November 23 

Clare Reilly has been exhibiting at Little River Gallery for 

almost 30 a October decade. Her - work 23 is November in hot demand, 2021 her serene and 

meditative paintings sent all over the world. 

This collection of paintings has been inspired by a seven day 

boat trip in Fiordland that I went on last October 2020. This 

complete contrast of landscape to most of the rest of New Zealand, 

has started my journey of exploration into these paintings. 

The wild Southern Ocean acts as a protective barrier to the rugged 

land of the fiords. 

A vast place of vertical steep land, dense forest and huge volumes 

of precipitation and very few landing spots have saved this extensive 

area from exploitation.

MY PRIDE AND JOY 

Gracie, an enduring legacy from 

early New Zealand 

Dreams can come true. It might take 

time and money, but with determination 

and perseverance, dreams can turn 

into reality. Brent was only a youngster 

in the 1960s when he went to a steam 

engine rally in Templeton. Traction 

engines grabbed his attention, but he 

never dreamed he would ever be able to 

afford one. Brent finally saw his dream 

come true. Fifteen years ago, he bought 

a traction engine from Ashburton. 

Brent recalled a quote that helped to 

explain why he purchased the traction 

engine. “Everyone is entitled to one 

leisure item in their life.” Gracie, the 

traction engine (named after a member 

of Brent’s family), is that one item 

for Brent. When asked why he liked 

his traction engine, Brent states, “It’s 

primeval, it’s water fire and steam, and 

so much power comes out of that.” 

Gracie is a 1925 Aveling traction 

engine roller that was initially imported 

into Auckland. In 1859, Thomas Aveling 

of England invented the traction 

engine when he modified a Clayton 

& Shuttleworth portable engine. 

These engines were the mechanical 

workhorses of the day and were used for 

heavy haulage and in road building. As 

a result, they were sometimes referred to 

as road locomotives. 

In New Zealand, traction engines 

were also involved in hauling the

water races for the Coleridge power 

station. They were robust and durable 

vehicles capable of carting hefty loads. 

Waimate County Council was where 

Gracie’s work ended, and from then 

on, preservation of the traction engine 

became the goal. Even with a slow speed 

of only around five miles per hour 

(8.05 kilometres an hour), Gracie has 

managed to move around locations. 

First, from Waimate to New Brighton, 

then to Ashburton, and now home is

Selwyn is a district of dog lovers; it currently has three Council 

managed dog parks and one in the planning stage.

and exiting the dog park and wear a collar 

with a current Local Authority registration 

tag at all times. 

• Owners must carry a lead at all times. 

• Dogs and children must be 

accompanied and supervised by an adult at 

all times. 

• Be a responsible parent and do not 

bring your small children into the dog park. 

• Equipment in the dog park is for dogs 

only. 

• Please do not let your children climb on 

the equipment or use the grounds as a play 

area. 

• Dogs and puppies must be fully 

vaccinated. 

• Owners are required to pick up and 

dispose of their dog’s faeces. 

• No bicycles, skateboards or motorised 

vehicles allowed. 

• Dogs that show signs of aggression 

must either be muzzled or removed from 

the park. 

• Dogs that are sick or in-season are 

prohibited. 

• Owners use the park at their own risk

going as sadly not every dog owner is 

conscientious about picking up their dog’s 

poo. Dog poo carries potentially nasty 

pathogens that none of us want to traipse 

into our homes or have come in contact 

with our kids. Bacteria that are pathogens 

for the intestinal tract and cause diarrhoea 

include Campylobacter, Salmonella, 

Yersinia and E. coli.

Plant a full range of 

summer vegetables 

Lights can be fun 

as well as practical 

GARDEN lighting is practical. 

Lights on a pathway will help 

you and your friends find their 

way to your front door in the 

dead of night, and will help deter 

unwanted guests. 

But it doesn’t have to stop 

there. Lights can also be fun, 

dramatic and creative. When 

you add lighting to your garden, 

follow the philosophy ‘‘less-ismore’’ 

and you will add a new 

dimension to your garden. Place 

a light behind a pot or statue, this 

will create interesting silhouettes. 

Add a submersible light to your 

water ponds or water feature. 

Light up a painted wall as a back 

drop to a favourite garden bed or 

plant feature. 

Place down lights in a tree to 

create pools of light on featured 

plants or ornaments. 

Lights will let you enjoy the 

garden at night throughout the 

year. A simple flick of a switch 

can make the winter night 

garden a fantastic composition 

when viewed from inside, and 

help to brighten up those dark 

gloomy nights. 

Lay out your cable around 

the desired area from the point 

where it will connect to the 

transformer ensuring you follow 

any directions on the transformer 

and its packaging. Plug 

transformer into a weatherproof 

exterior power point and switch 

on. 

At twilight, you can adjust the 

position and angles of the lights, 

if required. Your lighting is ready 

for you to enjoy. 

A FAVOURITE time of year 

for many gardeners, the end of 

October is the traditional period 

for planting out a full range of 

summer vegetables (and flowers) 

into a prepared garden, whether 

it’s in the ground or raised beds. 

But don’t panic if you haven’t 

prepared your soil for planting 

yet. Mix in plenty of compost into 

your existing soil now to a depth 

of 1-1.5 spade depth before you 

plant out. 

Delicious summer veges to 

plant out are beans, beetroot, 

carrots, celery, corn, cucumber, 

lettuce, onions, peas, pumpkin, 

radish, potatoes, spinach, tomatoes 

and zucchini. 

For plants that climb or need 

support like peas, beans or tomatoes, 

always put in your support 

structure before you plant your 

seedling so as not to disturb the 

roots later on. 

A good tip is to make sure you 

water regularly and to a plant’s 

requirements, for example, more 

water for leafy crops such as lettuce 

or fruiting varieties such as 

tomato and strawberries. During 

the early summer growing 

months (through to early December) 

side dress with fertiliser 

at three to four-weekly intervals. 

BUMPER CROP: Growing food in pots is a great way to get 

children interested in gardening. 

Ensure you water it in well. 

If you have limited space but 

still want to grow your own, then 

start a container garden instead. 

You can grow many vegetables 

successfully in pots or containers, 

especially with the different types 

of dwarf or mini-varieties now 

available. 

Growing in pots is also a great 

way to get children involved in 

gardening. There are a couple of 

things you need to do to ensure a 

bumper crop. 

Choosing the right sized container 

is important; people tend to 

select smaller pots, but make sure 

you choose a decent size. What 

you plant your veges in is crucial, 

so use good quality potting or 

container mixes as they contain 

well balanced, slow release nutrients 

and have moisture retaining 

qualities. 

It’s a good idea to change the 

soil every time you want to grow 

a new crop, as nutrients and 

water holding capabilities can get 

depleted. Position your pot or 

container in a warm sunny, north 

facing position, away from strong 

winds. 

Do small succession plantings 

of fast growing summer vegetables 

so you do not have them all 

cropping at once.

6 lettuces at once, they will all be ready at the same 

time. Stagger the planting a week or two apart so you 

have an ongoing supply through the season. 

Key tips for a bumper crop 

• Keep the plants pest, disease and weed-free 

• Establish a good watering routine. Plants will bolt to seed 

if they feel that they are under stress from lack of watering 

• Make sure they have enough nutrients to sustain healthy 

growth

Plenty of jobs to do 

in the spring garden 

THE JOY of spring is that there 

are plenty of jobs to do in the 

garden, especially now the soil is 

warming up. 

Towards the end of October, 

early season varieties of 

strawberries will begin to ripen. 

Check plants regularly for signs 

of grey mould (botrytis), and 

remove any affected leaves and 

fruit. 

Add pea straw, hay or clean 

bark mulch around the plants 

to provide a clean ‘nest’ for 

developing strawberries. 

Raspberries, boysenberries, 

loganberries and blackberries 

should be growing at a very fast 

rate as we move through the 

month. 

Train canes on a wall or a wire 

framework. It may be necessary 

to remove some surplus canes 

where growth is exceptional. 

Mulch with compost to suppress 

weeds and conserve soil moisture,

Lawns are now in very active 

growth and require regular 

mowing. Fertilise with lawn 

fertiliser and repeat every four to 

six weeks. This is the last month 

for ‘easy’ laying of a new lawn or 

for patching and existing lawn. 

RIPENING: Place pea straw, hay or mulch around your 

strawberries to provide a clean ‘nest.’ 

It’s a great time to plant up 

your container gardens with 

ornamental annuals, perennials 

or herbs, and even small green 

salad veges. 

Always start with fresh 

container mix and ensure the 

containers are well drained. 

Summer annuals that thrive in 

containers include dwarf cosmos, 

marigolds, petunia, portulacas, 

salvias and zinnias. 

If you are establishing a new herb 

garden or restoring an existing one, 

try and position the herb garden 

close to the kitchen so it’s easy to 

access. Ideally, herbs prefer a sunny, 

well-drained position. You may 

need to plant more of the herbs you 

frequently use for example basil, 

chives, parsley. 

Roses will now start coming 

into their own. The first blooms 

are the best display of the year 

before the dreaded blackspot 

and rust appear. Fertilise them 

every four to six weeks with rose 

fertiliser as this enhances regular 

and ‘strong’ flowering. 

Mulch with compost to help 

retain soil moisture and ‘dead 

head’ (the removal of old flowers) 

regularly to help promote 

continuous flowering. 

BOUNTY: Use plenty of compost for your cucumber plants.

telegraph cucumber is first to 

spring to mind. 

Subtly sweet, crisp, and 

refreshing. If that isn’t enough to 

tempt you, they’re also high in 

vitamin C and super hydrating. 

If you want to pick yours 

straight from the garden in time 

for your new year salads, now is 

the time to get planting. 

First, grab your telegraph 

cucumber seedlings. Look for 

a warm, sunny and dry spot in 

your garden. 

Dig in some compost or 

leftover potting mix to the soil, 

making sure it’s friable or breaks 

up in your hand. Then, plant your 

seedlings. 

The telegraph likes something to 

cling on to so, for best results, either 

place them near a trellis or similar 

frame, or use a simple stake. 

To encourage fruiting, plant 

next to a bee-friendly plant 

like lavender. This encourages 

pollination and, subsequently, 

fruiting. 

If pollination continues to be 

a problem (if the flowers fall off 

but no fruit develops), touch 

the pollen on each plant with a 

paintbrush, which will spread 

the pollen from one flower to the 

next, you can do the same with 

an electric toothbrush minus the 

toothbrush head. 

In around 10 weeks, you 

should have a plentiful bounty 

of cylindrical fruit to add a 

refreshing touch to your summer 

fare.

Big Highlander V6 leads the charge 

TOYOTA COULD well have 

been excused for abandoning its 

popular large sport utility vehicle, 

the Highlander. 

You see, the V6 version is a 

car that is going to get clobbered 

in January by the Government’s 

Clean Car Programme tax, it will 

certainly cop a $4600 price rise 

that will be used to fund rebates 

on electric cars and hybrids. 

However, Toyota is in tune with 

market demands and the new 

Highlander is not only available 

with just that wonderful V6 engine, 

there are also three hybrid 

variants that have just landed. 

The five-model Highlander 

range goes something like this, 

the GXL entry-level model this 

evaluation focuses on comes in at 

$60,990, while an extra $3k will 

buy you into Limited specification. 

There are three hybrid 

models that utilise an uprated 

2.5-litre, four-cylinder/electric 

drivetrain that we first saw in 

RAV4 hybrid. The GXL hybrid 

also lists at $63,990, a Limited ZR 

sits at $74,990, in-between sits a 

$66,990 Limited. 

All have four-wheel-drive and 

all are seven-seat models, which 

is one of the reasons why Highlander 

has been such a popular 

model in the past. As such, it 

could well be regarded as the 

quintessential large SUV. 

The Highlander V6 has lost 

none of the credentials that have 

appealed to drivers who like the 

freedom of petrol power up front, 

and power that is quite substantial 

– Toyota claiming 218kW and 

350Nm. 

Toyota is also fully aware a big 

engine in a big car never looks 

good for fuel economy. However, 

the company has decreased the 

newcomer’s consumption remarkably 

thanks to clever engine 

management mapping and the 

introduction of an idle stop-start 

system. 

Fuel usage is now rated at 

8.8-litres per 100km on a combined 

cycle average, down from 

9.5l/100km. I spent a lot of time 

commuting in city traffic, so 

my overall average didn’t match 

Toyota’s, but when I took the 

test car back to the dealership it 

was still showing a respectable 

10.2l/100km. On my highway run 

the engine sipped fuel instantaneously 

at the rate of 7l/100km at 

100km/h, the engine turning over 

barely above idle at just 1400rpm. 

The big V6 engine has served 

Toyota well, its origins hark way 

back to early Prado, Camry and 

Aurion days, the Blade Master 

(pre-owned import), Hilux and 

several Lexus models. As such, 

it has been constantly refined to 

the point where it is very much

a market leader in terms of sophistication. 

Such is its smoothness 

it’s hard to fathom with a 

displacement of 3456cc all that 

reciprocating mass could be so 

unflustered. It is also a flighty engine 

when required, it sings freely 

through the rev band and likes to 

show off its strength. 

Drive is carried through an 

eight-speed automatic transmission, 

once again it is a beauty 

with undetectable shifts and a ratio 

structure that promotes quick 

acceleration and relaxed engine 

operation at highway speed. 

The more ratios that are 

packed into a gearbox always 

provide a smoother driving 

experience, and the Highlander’s 

driveline is a beauty, it also ushers 

in quick acceleration with a likely 

standstill to 100km/h time of 

8.5sec and an overtaking time of 

5.5sec to make 120 from 80km/h. 

I took the test car on my usual 

loop west to Windwhistle, utilising 

a short shingle section near 

Glenroy to scope out the road to 

the Washpen Falls walking track. 

There are a few corrugations on 

that road, but from the outset the 

Highlander impressed with its 

suspension control over the ruts 

and its ability to put power to 

ground. The tyres on the test car 

were a Toyo compound (235/65 x 

18in) and they extracted grip well 

along with providing a quiet ride

The same could be said of the 

entire vehicle, it sits on the outer 

periphery of the luxury car market 

so its levels of noise, vibration 

and harshness are extremely low. 

That makes for a relaxing highway 

cruise. 

The steerage and suspension 

combine to provide an almost 

sporty sensation from behind the 

wheel, and that takes into account 

that at just under two-tonne it is a 

heavy wagon, yet it feels composed 

and far from bulky when a 

tricky corner presents itself. 

Toyota has built the new 

Highlander on a completely new 

platform that makes it a little bigger 

than before, but still offers the 

fundamentals underneath that 

give it cross-country prowess. For 

those who want to take the family 

camping to those high country 

lakes or tackle the skifield access 

road, the Highlander is vastly 

capable with various driver-selectable 

modes depending on the 

surface ahead and the speed at 

which it can be challenged. 

While many of the Highlanders 

mechanicals are a carryover, the 

shape of the newcomer is more 

dynamic and bolder, Toyota are 

making no excuses for the size of 

the vehicle, they want it to look 

big and it is. 

Even in GXL form it reeks of 

sophistication, it is comfortable 

and has a wealth of specification. 

If you want leather trim you’ll 

need to opt for the Limited variant, 

but I far prefer cloth and the 

GXL’s trim is still very inviting, 

especially on a frosty Canterbury 

morning. It must also be said 

the Highlander in this form has 

a high grade interior, the plastics 

and trim elements are all high 

grade and the layout of the controls 

is intuitive and user-friendly. 

The Highlander has long been 

sourced from Toyota’s United 

States manufacturing operation, 

and nothing has changed there. 

Quality is high and the familyfriendly 

sport utility vehicle 

concept hasn’t been altered. 

Look soon for an evaluation 

on the hybrid Highlander,

Initial consultation: Selwyn 

District Parks Management Plan 

Selwyn District Council (the Council) is proposing to prepare a reserve management plan 

for parks which are owned and administered by the Council, with a few exceptions. 

The new management plan will include parks held subject to the Reserves Act 1977. 

It will also include Council-owned and administered land referred to as ‘reserve’ which 

does not hold formal reserve status under the Reserves Act. 

In accordance with section 41 of the Reserves Act 1977 the Council gives notice of its 

intention to prepare the draft Selwyn District Parks Management Plan. This will include a 

comprehensive review of relevant existing Council reserve management plans (excluding 

the following reserves: Chamberlains Ford, Coes Ford, Lakeside Domain, Whitecliffs 

Domain, Tārerekautuku Yarrs Lagoon, and reserves within the villages of Lake Coleridge 

and Castle Hill). 

Once developed, this new plan will be Selwyn’s first overarching plan which will help the 

Council keep track of, manage, protect and outline what we want to achieve across the 

Council parks in Selwyn. 

The Council invites the public to send in written suggestions on matters that you would 

like considered in the draft plan. For more information and to provide feedback please

Consultation is open until 5pm on Wednesday 8 December 2021. 

Next steps 

Feedback received during the initial consultation will inform the draft 

Selwyn District Parks Management Plan. The draft plan is expected to be released for

EXERCISE FOXHOUND 

08 - 11 November 2021 

The general public is to be advised that NZ Army 

Training will be conducted in the Burnham, West 

Melton Rifle Range and the Oxford Forest areas 

over the period 08 – 11 November 2021. 

The exercise will involve personnel of the 2/1 

Battalion Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment 

from 1 (NZ) Brigade, Burnham. The exercise will 

involve the movement of up to 200 personnel and 

vehicles by day and night. 

Training will involve small arms live, simulation 

and blank firing ammunition as well as explosives 

and pyrotechnics. The exercise will involve military 

activities being run by day and night. Activities 

will be run over an 80hr period starting at 0600 on 

Monday the 8th and finishing midday Thursday 

the 11th.

Journalism Fund, is hiring a journalist to join Local Democracy Reporting in 

2022 and 2023 from the North Canterbury News office in Rangiora. 

You will be covering local authorities and other publicly-funded 

organisations, but also going out and talking to the people affected by 

these organisations’ decisions, sharing their stories, and coming up with 

your own stories on similar topics. 

Your focus will be providing great public interest journalism coverage daily 

throughout the North Canterbury region including Waimakariri, Hurunui 

and Kaikōura. This is a multi-media role so experience in video, audio and 

photography would be an advantage. 

You will report to Allied Press’ North Canterbury bureau chief. You will 

receive extra training and support from RNZ, and your work will be made 

available at the same time to all of the programme’s media partners, 

including RNZ. 

This could be a junior, intermediate or senior role depending on the 

successful candidate. We are looking for someone with as many of the 

following qualities as possible. You don’t need all of these to apply, but you 

do need to have at least two years’ reporting experience (although in some 

cases we may also consider exceptional applicants with only one year’s 

experience). 

• Able to spot a strong story and make it come alive for your audience 

• Able to meet the highest standards of accuracy, fairness and balance 

• Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi 

• Some knowledge of local government 

• Excellent writing skills 

This is a full-time role for a fixed term (through to 31 December 2023).

Whether you are furnishing a new home or 

updating your current home, curtains and blinds 

can provide privacy, warmth and style. However, 

another important consideration is window 

treatments also need to withstand our harsh New 

Zealand sun. 

Sheers are especially helpful in creating 

softness while providing privacy. While there is a 

considerable range of sheers, the popular colour 

palette is still in the grey tones, but a trend is 

towards the warmer natural colours. For costeffectiveness 

and durability, one hundred per cent 

polyester linen-look sheers provide the desired look 

and minimise fading. 

Natural or dark coloured curtains or drapes to 

complement white walls are common, and the 

usual white, black or grey still hold sway. However, 

a stylish approach is the “Hamptons” look in 

furnishings, with overall monochromatic white 

being the goal. The natural look is in demand with 

linen fabric in favour due to its antimicrobial and 

insulating properties and ethical and sustainability 

factors. An emerging trend is the texture of the
