As a Unesco Creative City of Music Ghent is very proud to host the World Choir
Games. Music lovers will enjoy the most famous choirs in historical venues and
even from boats on one of our many lovely canals. On an artistic and cultural level,
Ghent is world class. You will find more theatres, cinemas, festivals, museums and
concert halls than you would normally expect in bigger cities. When you say Ghent,
everybody thinks of the Van Eyck brothers and ‘The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb’.
It is one of the most influential paintings ever made. But we have much more: our
10-day Ghent Festivities for example are world famous. It attracts some 2 million
visitors a year and is the biggest open air summer festival in Europe. The Film Fest
and Light Festival also have an international reputation. No wonder Ghent wants to
become European Capital of Culture. In 2030 there is an opportunity, when Belgium
and Cyprus jointly host the title. It seems a long way off, but we are thoroughly
preparing our candidacy. The World Choir Games will be an excellent showcase.
I truly hope you enjoy the World Choir Games and our city. Ghent offers a fascinating
cultural cocktail brimming with trendy, modern urban life. A city where people truly
enjoy life. Ghent is fast becoming Belgium‘s best city for foodies, and is attracting
more and more innovative top gastronomic talent and challenging concepts. Young,
award-winning chefs give it their all in the city, making waves internationally with
their hip restaurant concepts. Shopping in Ghent is also wonderful. Ghent has the
largest pedestrian shopping area in Belgium and a highly varied range of shops and
markets, all within a stone’s throw of each other. Ghent is a place that offers both
small-town charm and big-city excitement. Definitely enough for more than a one
night stay.
