Ashville Holdings is rooted in construction and our history has morphed
from boots on the ground company found itself to with in-house very few basements to development and government
infrastructure projects. I used to drive
“I knew Ashville who my building competitors Holdings were, as I encompasses every element in
approach worked, and one tipper-grab very soon
became three tipper-grabs and a tipper.
“Then Wandsworth banned grabs from taking
out of skips, and I began to lose work,” remembers
Louisy. “So we started buying skip lorries too.”
This was quickly followed by another change
in direction. “We would arrive at a job only to be
told we couldn’t load as a concrete lorry was there,
and that the concrete lorry was more important.
So we bought a volumetric concrete lorry! So then
we had a concrete lorry, grabs, tippers and skips,”
says Louisy. “But then when we turned up with the
concrete lorry, people were telling us that the pump
wasn’t there, so we’d have to wait. So we bought a
A pair of 4x2 grabs were soon added to the
fast-expanding and increasingly varied fleet,
allowing Ashville to operate in some of the mews
and narrow streets of Chelsea. And more recently
the company made the move into artic tippers,
with the purchase of a pair of Scania XT R500 6x2
tractors with Kelberg tipping trailers.
But there was still one serious hurdle to overcome,
as Louisy explains: “If we priced a job, and two
The Gaffer
FIRSTLY, MAY I EXTEND A WARM WELCOME TO STEVE
COOPER, HIS STAFF, PLAYERS, AND ALL ASSOCIATED
WITH NOTTINGHAM FOREST FOOTBALL CLUB.
S
teve has made an immediate
impact at Forest, and they
have delivered a number of
strong performances. There’s no
doubt about the quality they possess
in their ranks and with more than two
thirds of the season still remaining,
Steve will undoubtedly be looking to
galvanise the squad even further.
They will present a formidable
challenge here this evening, but as
always, it’s an encounter we’re very
much looking forward to.
I’m writing these notes the morning
after the disappointment of losing
a penalty shoot-out to Sunderland.
Let me please be initially very clear: I
don’t think we did enough to be able
to say we absolutely deserved to win
the game and go through. The tie was
evenly matched and it’s fair to say that
both teams had good opportunities.
However, the key moment and the
one that has caused so much anger
and frustration, relates to the offside
decision so late in the game. A
perfectly good goal was inexplicably
disallowed, despite everyone seeing
the position of Charlie and everyone
rising to celebrate what would clearly
have been the defining moment.
At this level of competition, with so much
at stake, with so many implications on
the outcome, such mistakes simply
cannot happen. A financially lucrative
quarter-final draw, the opportunity
to test ourselves against Premier
League opposition, the chance for our
supporters to enjoy a high-profile fixture
and so much more besides, all vanish
because of such a staggering decision.
The penalty shoot-out was, of course,
disappointing, bearing in mind how
ruthlessly efficient the players had been
in similar scenarios against Leyton
Orient and Everton. However, players
We stand for clean sport.
Even for your skin.
Sport is the most beautiful thing in the world, and nothing must be allowed to pollute that beauty.
That is why, besides developing increasingly high-performance materials that have a low impact
on the environment, we at Erreà are the first teamwear company in Europe to have been awarded
are human, we all make mistakes, and,
on this occasion, it went against us.
Irrespective, the fact remains that a
perfectly good goal was ignored and
QPR have paid a heavy price.
This type of situation raises the
issue of VAR being deployed for
Championship fixtures. The size of
the league, the average attendance
making it one of the most watched in
European football, the obvious ‘prize’
on offer - all such aspects support
the need for clear and obvious
mistakes to be eradicated. I’m sure
there’ll be concerns regarding the
impact on pace of play, but the
significance of mistakes at this level
are too severe not to have the best
technology applied.
Finally, I’d like to answer a question
that was posed by a disgruntled fan
prior to our game against Sunderland.
I regularly mention in the media the
problems raised by the heavy fixture
schedule and the demands placed
upon the individual players.
This isn’t mentioned as an excuse,
or to suggest any worry or concern
about our readiness for such a run of
fixtures. It’s more to raise the issue and
seek some form of debate leading to a
better outcome for all concerned.
If we don’t raise the issue, it will never
be improved, plain and simple! The
more fatigue impacts the players,
the greater the likelihood of injury.
The more players that are injured,
the lower the quality of performance
delivered by the relevant team. The
supporters who pay good money are
therefore watching a lesser quality of
‘end product’. We must ensure that
every supporter can enjoy the best
quality of entertainment whenever
and wherever possible. I hope that
answers the question posed.
Enjoy the game!
R’S FANS HEAD FOR HEARTS
SPELTHORNE Rangers, a Sunday football team full
of R’s fans, are off to play in their 28th country.
Founded in 1990, Spelthorne, from the Chiswick
& District League, will face Hearts Legends on 7th
November (4.30pm) at The Scottish FA’s Oriam
facility in Edinburgh.
Brazil, Argentina, Romania, Denmark, Luxembourg
and most of Europe.
In 2019, they played Boca Juniors in Argentina.
Five members of the Boca squad had played for
Argentina, three of them with Diego Maradona.
QPR’S December fixtures with Stoke and Sheffield
United have been selected for live coverage on
Sky Sports.
Rangers’ Championship clash with the Potters at
Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium will now take
place on Sunday 5th December (2.30pm).
Meanwhile, the trip to Sheffield United will now
take place on Monday 13th December (7.45pm).
FAN BEHAVIOUR
A small minority of ‘fans’ have recently taken to
throwing objects during games.
This has been witnessed during home and away
fixtures and has resulted in supporters - our own
as well as opposition - being injured.
The club prides itself on its reputation as a family
club. We will not tolerate this behaviour.
This message is not only a reminder for the
individuals guilty of these acts. We also hope it
serves as a reassuring note for the vast majority of
our fans who are as appalled by this behaviour as the
club are.
QPR CEO Lee Hoos said: “We will be stepping up
our surveillance.
“I cannot be any clearer in my messaging
regarding this. We will not allow it to continue. It
will be stamped out.
“Anyone who is found throwing missiles or acting
in a similarly unacceptable way will be issued with
a lifetime ban from the club.”
Supporters are also reminded that entering the field
of play, unless instructed to do so, is an arrestable
offence under the Football (Offences) Act 1991.
Regardless of age, all fans must adhere to ground
regulations.
Should a supporter enter the field of play, they will
be subject to a stadium ban. If the supporter is
under the age of 14, their parent/guardian will also
face similar action.
same division, Mide Shodipo played the final three
minutes in Sheffield Wednesday’s 1-1 home draw
with Lincoln, while Charlie Kelman was an unused
substitute in Gillingham’s 2-2 draw with Bolton.
In League Two, Conor Masterson played 78
minutes of Cambridge’s 4-1 loss at Shrewsbury,
while Faysal Bettache was a late substitute in
Oldham’s goalless draw with Carlisle.
Amrit Bansal-McNulty played the opening hour in
I
lias, we have to start with the
Sunderland cup tie. The officials
obviously got a decision badly wrong
when they ruled out Charlie Austin’s
header. How frustrating was it when you
watched the replay afterwards and saw
he was clearly onside?
It was really frustrating. We wanted to
go through to the next round and play
one of the big teams, so it was a very
disappointing night for us. It was the
wrong decision but everyone’s human
and everyone makes mistakes.
Our penalties were disappointing as
well, weren’t they?
Very. I was really disappointed with my
own penalty. I mishit it and sent it over
the bar. It’s part of football I guess, but we
can’t dwell on it too long as we need to
get ready for the game with Nottingham
Forest. We need to get our heads right
and make sure we deliver against them.
Is it a long walk to the penalty spot to
the centre-circle during a shoot-out?
Not for me personally. I want to be involved
in those moments. It’s a longer walk back
when you’ve missed, believe me.
Saturday’s defeat at Peterborough was
another disappointing result. What was
your take on it?
I felt we had another bad decision go
against us that day as I thought their
second goal was offside. It was a bad day
at the office for all of us, we know that as
a group. But we have a good mentality
as a squad, and we have great staff and
amazing supporters. The fans travelled
up in their thousands to Peterborough
and we let them down, so we need to
repay them against Forest.
The next few games will
decide whether we stay
with the chasing pack
HOOPS
I don’t want to be a top
player one day and an
average player the next
You scored directly from a corner at
London Road - was that something
you’d been working on in training?
We saw they had a weakness on the front
post so we’d worked that I would whip
it in there to either get a flick from one
of our players, cause confusion or even
go straight in. Luckily it came off, but it
didn’t count for much given we lost.
That was our fourth defeat in a row
on the road. That obviously needs
to change if we’re to stay in the mix
for promotion?
Every game we play away from home
will be tough. It won’t always be pretty.
We’ll have to win ugly sometimes. But
we’re still in a good place in the table,
even though it’s very tight. The next few
games will decide whether we stay with
the chasing pack. We need to be patient
and deliver some good performances.
You’ve found form in front of goal
recently. You must be pleased with how
you’ve been performing personally?
I have to give the other players credit.
Without their work rate I wouldn’t be
scoring. I want to be scoring goals, that’s
what I’m all about, but my teammates are
also key to that side of my game.
Do you feel you’ve found a greater
consistency this season?
Last season I felt I’d play two good
games and then have three matches that
weren’t at the same level. I don’t want to
be a top player one day and an average
player the next. I want to stay on a top
level and that all comes with working
hard. The harder I work, the more the
benefits will come my way.
Your form this season has seen you
Do you pay much attention to that?
Not really. I’m focusing fully on QPR and
doing my stuff for the team. I love this
club and I’m very happy to be here.
You seem to have a great relationship
with Chris Willock on the pitch. Does it
help that you get on well off it?
Of course. These kind of relationships
don’t come too often in life. We have the
same sort of humour, and we can also talk
about football. He’s a very good player
but also just a very good human being. I
have a good relationship with lots of the
boys… Seny Dieng, Albert Adomah, Stefan
Johansen. But everyone gets on. It’s a tight
group and that can take us a long way.
What players did you enjoy watching
Every single game in the Championship
are seven teams on 21 points. Every
team is playing to win. Forest are only
four points behind us now after a good
run of form, so we need to match their
intensity and hopefully come out on top.
They’ve changed managers recently and
they’ll be up for it after a loss against
Fulham. But we’ve lost our last two to
Peterborough and Sunderland and we’re
desperate to get back to winning ways.
THAT I PLAYED FOOTBALL THE OTHER DAY.
Y
es - actual, proper football. Well, uni
football. Well, five-a-side uni football.
Well, five-a-side uni football with some
of the guys from my course. Well, five-a-side
uni football with some of the guys from my
course in a friendly, in the first game some of
us have played since we were kids, against a
side comprised of the first team and reserves
of Cardiff Met Uni, who play in the Welsh
Premier League.
Eliot, stood behind me and screamed “ZAMORA!”
It went well! We scored eight goals!
The score was now something like 20-5.
They scored 26.
The debut match of NCTJ FC (named, as all
great football teams are, after an examining
board) was characterised by limited personnel,
our sole defender Jared repeatedly shooting
from the halfway line, and an immense shift from
our goalkeeper Aled who, at 26-8, still saved
more shots than he let in.
Eliot, my fellow midfielder, decided fairly on that
his role was - as Peter Crouch and his podcast
co-hosts would put it, to “’house” the opponents.
When he scored, he did the JLingz celebration. He
did Ronaldo’s trademark SIUUUUUUU. He did it all.
And - here’s the QPR connection you were looking
for, which is admittedly tenuous - in the 35th
minute, I was in on goal. The other team had,
effectively, given up. With their defenders, content
with having secured the win about half an hour
ago, ambling vaguely back towards their goal, I
produced what could be described as an adequate
finish, nudging the ball into the back of the net.
I said the link was tenuous.
Scraping the barrel for more QPR connections, I
can offer the fact that my hair was described by
rgeneration.net contributor Alex as looking a bit
like Gareth Ainsworth.
But really, if anything, this is a story about
grassroots football. It feels so very good to be
playing regularly after lockdown, and every NCTJ
FC player left the pitch that night grinning and
laughing irrespective of the heavy defeat.
It’s amazing to hear people’s stories of their kids,
nieces and nephews trying tricks and flicks on the
playground in tribute to Ilias Chair or Chris Willock
- but spare a thought for the 20-something
Masters student describing his playing style
as “sort of like Stefan Johansen” then getting
embarrassed by a Cardiff Met player who’s played
two games already in the same evening.
We lost the next game 14-7. Mathematically,
that’s progress.
OVERVIEW
O P P O S I T I O N O V E R V I E W
EUROPEAN Cup winners and top-flight champions in the
1970s and 80s, Nottingham Forest’s glory days are now but a
distant memory.
Continuity was a key component of Forest’s success under
Brian Clough - but it’s been sadly lacking at the City Ground in
recent seasons.
The legendary Clough occupied the Forest dugout for more
than 18 years. However, since the 2010/11 season, the East
Midlands club have only completed one full campaign without
changing their manager.
Chris Hughton was the latest incumbent to be shown the exit
door after a dismal start to the new season saw Forest suffer
six defeats from their opening seven league games.
In his place came former Swansea boss Steve Cooper and
the Welshman has quickly overseen a turnaround in fortunes,
although the honeymoon period ended with a 4-0 home
thumping at the hands of Fulham last weekend.
succeed Chris Hughton
in September.
The Welshman had left
Swansea in July - two
months after their
Championship play-off final
defeat by Brentford.
A former defender with
Wrexham, The New Saints,
Rhyl, Bangor City and
Porthmadog, Cooper is
the 14th manager Forest
have appointed in the past
10 years.
Although Swansea
represented Cooper’s first
taste of club management,
his coaching career had
spanned 15 years in the
youth set-ups of Wrexham,
Liverpool and England.
He took the reins at
Swansea in June 2019 and
led them to successive
play-off finishes.
The 27-year-old, who
Samba played 49 times
Named in the 2019/20
Samba is now closing in
The stopper appears to
FOREST completed the signing
J
OHN, you were an elegant midfield
man on our path to the 1981/82 FA
Cup final. It was 40 years ago now, but
it only seems like yesterday…
I know. Time flies but QPR’s run to the
final will never be forgotten by many
people. I’d only joined the R’s from
Brighton at the start of that season as
well. Just as the plastic Omniturf pitch
was being installed at Loftus Road.
Then nine months later the following
May, I was playing in an FA Cup final at
Wembley. Do you remember
telegrams? I actually received a
telegram from a school mate before
the final. And he just put: ‘Every
schoolboy’s dream!’ And it was. When
we were kids, we looked upon the FA
Cup final as such an amazing
occasion. It was like a Royal Wedding.
The whole country used to come to a
standstill for the cup final. It’s lost a
little bit of that shine nowadays. But
back in the early 1980s, to play in an
FA Cup final was beyond my wildest
dreams. And it was an outstanding
achievement by QPR at the time.
In the third round, we were drawn at
home to top-flight Middlesbrough, so
we started our cup run as underdogs…
Yes, but we had quite a decent team.
And we always fancied ourselves at
home on the plastic. We were very
strong at Loftus Road. Opposing teams
would come down to QPR and just
couldn’t cope with the surface. It gave
us a big advantage in many respects.
But we didn’t manage to beat Boro as
they held us to a draw.
After that 1-1 draw, it was a midweek
trip up to Middlesbrough’s old
Ayresome Park stadium. Rangers won
3-2 with Warren Neill grabbing the
winning goal for us in extra-time…
Middlesbrough were favourites but we
pulled off a brilliant result. It was
‘Wally’ [Warren Neill] who scored the
decisive goal. He did spend a lot of
time as an attacking full-back and was
always in the opposition half of the
pitch. But to get him up in the six-yard
box for a diving header was fantastic.
Even then, though, I don’t feel we
really started thinking about going all
the way to the final. I can remember
that we were much more focused on
trying to win promotion. We were
always in and around the top five or
six positions in Division Two. But we
had a problem playing away from
home, particularly in our league
games. Once we came off the plastic,
we seemed to struggle a bit on grass.
In the fourth round we were drawn
away to Blackpool who were in
Division Four. We nearly lost that
game, but it finished 0-0. Then the
replay took place at Loftus Road with
Clive Allen scoring four times as we
ran out 5-1 winners…
I remember the 0-0 draw up there very
clearly. We got battered actually from
start to finish. We travelled up on the
Friday and stayed overnight in a hotel.
That was a hell of a slap for us going all
the way up to Blackpool. It was a tough
match. Blackpool came at us from the
start. It was cold, one of those crisp
winter afternoons. As a midfielder, I
didn’t see much of the ball at all in that
game. Blackpool were by far the better
team on the day, but we managed to
hang in there. We were probably lucky
that we didn’t concede, but we stayed
in the game to take them back to
Shepherds Bush. And as I said before,
we always felt confident playing at
home on the plastic. Clive scored four
and he was starting to hit good form in
that cup run. I remember Clive’s dad
Les always used to have a bet on the
opposition. He started doing it from
the third round against Middlesbrough
where he had a little flutter so that if
his son’s team lost, Les still got a
couple of quid back from the bookies!
Clive was a quality player and a quality
finisher. I’d never seen much of him up
close until I signed for Rangers. But all
he was ever interested in doing was
scoring goals. Clive was probably one
of the main reasons why QPR had so
much success in that period. He’d
maybe get three chances in a match
and end up scoring two of them. He
was very prolific. A great kid, a great
trainer and a good pro. We definitely
needed Clive’s goals to reach the cup
final and to go on to win promotion the
season after.
In the fifth round, we beat fellow
Division Two side Grimsby 3-1 at
Loftus Road in what was a
comprehensive victory…
It was. Again, it was on our plastic pitch
where opposing players definitely had
problems adapting. I always remember
our pre-match preparation at Rangers.
We used to train on the Omniturf surface
on the Friday morning before a home
game and then the opposition were
allowed to use the pitch that afternoon.
We’d often hang around to watch them
and see how they coped with the plastic.
It was really hard when you went on it for
the first time. I can still recall seeing away
players falling all over the place and
slipping on the surface. If you weren’t
used to it and you started chasing the
ball and running towards the touchline,
you just couldn’t stop! The Ellerslie Road
side of the ground used to get a little bit
icy during the winter months. So away
players were crashing into the perimeter
walls around the pitch during those
Friday sessions! Training on the pitch was
totally different to playing a match on it.
Because when you’re in training mode,
you’re not actually flat out. Match mode
is a little bit different. There were many
times that the opposition would come
down and literally hated the pitch from
the first minute. Often when we went
HOOPS
1-0 ahead in a game, the away team
would almost give up. They felt that not
only were they playing against a fairly
decent football team, but they were also
playing against the pitch as well. It gave
us a great advantage in that respect.
Then it was on to Crystal Palace at
home in the quarter-finals…
We had a number of ex-Palace lads,
and it was a really hard game. Two
very evenly balanced teams. There
were a few feuds going on during the
game out on the pitch. I don’t think
QPR and Palace got on too well so
there were some late tackles and a
few boots being left in. The crowd
were getting involved and it was a very
tense match. Palace were a good side.
Our boss Terry Venables had moved
from Selhurst Park the season before
and left behind some very good
players. But defensively we were really
solid on the day. Fortunately for us,
Clive came up with the only goal in the
last couple of minutes. I’ve seen it a
few times since and I won the header
to knock the ball down to Clive. What’s
good about YouTube nowadays is that
I can watch things that I’d forgotten! It
was just Clive at his best. Anywhere
inside the box, he always knew where
the goal was. Anyway, we were
through again in the cup and then
suddenly you did start thinking about
the final. I was coming up to my 28th
birthday and I’d never got anywhere
near going to play at Wembley before
in an FA Cup final. All of a sudden, you
start to get a little bit excited. It was
getting close, and we did start to think
that this was a good opportunity for
us to get to the final. You start to look
forward to the FA Cup draw to see
who we might get in the semi-final. It
turned out to be West Brom.
QPR 2
LEICESTER 0
DATE: Saturday 24th October 1981
COMPETITION: Division Two
ATTENDANCE: 12,419
THE PROGRAMME: 16 pages, price 40p
A very good win for Queens Park Rangers in
their push for promotion to the top flight.
On a cold and damp day, Rangers were in
sixth position at kick-off with Leicester one
place below. But the Foxes were simply swept
away on the plastic Omniturf pitch.
QPR forged ahead on 28 minutes after a
terrible defensive mix-up. Leicester’s Geoff
Scott passed back to his keeper Mark
Wallington, who allowed the ball to bounce off
his chest. It landed straight at the feet of
Simon Stainrod, who rounded Wallington to
gleefully score.
With 11 minutes to go, man of the match
John Gregory added the second with a
stunning volley from the edge of the box after
Leicester failed to clear their lines. It was
Gregory’s seventh strike of the season and
secured QPR’s sixth consecutive home win.
Hoops boss Terry Venables said afterwards:
“Leicester are a hard-working team and one
of the better sides in this division. I thought it
was a really exciting game and I’m very
pleased with our win.
“John Gregory is like a comic-book picture of
what kids should be doing on a football pitch.
“He covers ground so quickly and is a
top-class finisher. He’s always getting into
good positions.”
The match report in the Shepherds Bush
Gazette newspaper read: “Venables has
every right to be pleased. His team - now
fourth in the Second Division - look to be a
certainty to go up if they can maintain the
sort of form that had Leicester on the ropes
for most of this match.
“If they can produce that form away from
home then the bookies who made them
favourites at the start of the season seem
certain to have got it right.”
EDITORIAL SNIPPETS: R’s secretary/
programme editor Ron Phillips wrote:
“Just enough room to deplore the
utterly misleading photo in the ‘News of
the World’ on 11 October of Gary
Waddock’s knees during the game
against Norwich. The headline
‘Skinned!’ and the caption ‘SORE POINT
- that’s what it looks like on this close up
of Gary Waddock’s knees in action on
QPR’s artificial pitch’ gave the
impression that strips of skin had been
rubbed off during play. For the benefit of
those who may not have seen the very
small subsequent retraction and who
found this as shocking as we did: Gary’s
knees were simply covered in white
Vaseline - a normal precaution adopted
by many soccer and rugby players
everywhere. After the game, Gary had
not a single mark on his legs. Clear now,
‘News of the World’?’
Elsewhere in the programme, Waddock
confirmed: “It looked like skin in the
picture, but in fact it was grease that I put
on to protect myself against the pitch.”
HOOPS
OUR CLUB AMBASSADOR’S
VIEWS ON ALL THINGS QPR…
G
ood evening everyone and
welcome back to the Kiyan
Prince Foundation Stadium for
tonight’s Championship game against
Nottingham Forest.
Forest are a big club with a fantastic
history. As a young lad I remember
watching them not only winning the
league but also lifting the European
Cup two years in succession under
the brilliant Brian Clough. What an
achievement that was and probably one
that will never be repeated again in terms
of the size of the club. They, like many
clubs of that era, have had difficult times
in recent years but will be doing all they
can on and off the field to get back into
the Premier League.
After a poor start to the season which
saw a managerial change, they’ve had
an upturn in results under new boss
Steve Cooper and had started to climb
the table before losing heavily last week
to Fulham. They have a talented squad,
and we know that tonight’s game will be
a tough encounter with three valuable
points up for grabs.
Tuesday evening saw us exit the Carabao
Cup on penalties to Sunderland. We
had a big decision go against us late
in the game which proved costly not
only in terms of a last-eight place but
also everything else that is associated
with progression in the competition. I
personally still feel more can be done
to help officials at all levels get key
decisions correct.
That one went against us and it hurt but
we mustn’t dwell on it and feel sorry for
ourselves. That’s why tonight is such
a big game and gives us a chance to
respond and get back to winning ways.
The league table is so tight. Every
point is valuable, and you have to earn
each one you get. Every game throws
up a different challenge that you have
to meet head on and tonight will be
no different.
This evening, we’re delighted to
welcome Jamie Mackie back to QPR and
induct him into the Forever R’s club in
recognition of his time here as a player.
Jamie served the club really well in his
two spells and was a key part of the team
that gained promotion to the Premier
League in the 2010/11 season. He
became a real fans’ favourite with his
all-action displays and gave everything
he had when he pulled on the QPR shirt. I
know he’ll get a fantastic reception from
the QPR fans when he steps onto the
pitch at half-time.
I hope Jamie and his family have a superb
evening back at the club. I know from
speaking to him in the last few weeks how
much he’s looking forward to being at the
game and being inducted into the Forever
R’s club, which is so popular and receives
tremendous support from our fans.
Thank you once again for all your support
both home and away since the start of
the season. It’s been brilliant. Continue
to get behind the team tonight and
hopefully we can win the game and put
another three points on the board.
Come on you R’s!
Sunday 27th April 1975 at 2pm
QPR All Stars v John Edrich
Surrey All Stars
John Edrich & Mick Leach
Testimonial
This was a joint benefit
occasion for the cricketer
John Edrich and for Queens
Park Rangers stalwart Mick
Leach.
Edrich was an English firstclass
cricketer with a career
that ran from 1956 to 1978. He
played for Surrey at the time
of this testimonial and was
considered one of the best
batsmen of his generation.
Leach, meanwhile, was a
strong midfielder/striker
who came up through the
youth ranks at Rangers. He
scored on his first-team
debut against Colchester in
February 1965.
Leach made 361 appearances
in total for the R’s and hit
70 goals. This included his
match-winning strike versus
Leicester at Loftus Road on
23rd September 1975 which
put QPR top of the league for
the first time in our history.
He later transferred to Detroit
Express (USA) in March 1978
for £30,000. Leach sadly died
of lung cancer in 1992, aged
just 44.
As well as the cricket and
football stars taking part, the
teams also fielded some top
personalities from the world
of entertainment.
Admission was by donations
of 30p, 50p and 75p and a
scorecard was given for this
donation at the turnstiles. A
40-page programme was also
available for a 15p donation
and mainly consisted of
adverts along with a few old
photos of Edrich and Leach.
The following Queens Park
Rangers players took part:
Mick Leach (38 runs, caught),
Terry Mancini (21, bowled),
Dave Clement (nine, bowled),
Ian Gillard (one, not out), Phil
Parkes (37, not out), Don
Rogers (26, caught), Dave
Sexton (40, caught), David
Webb (30, caught).
In addition, the television and
showbiz stars who appeared
for QPR were actor Dennis
Waterman (two, caught), TV
presenter Monty Modlyn (15,
caught), singer Frankie Laine
(11, bowled) and TV presenter
John Stapleton (two, bowled).
The best-known entertainer
on Edrich’s team was Ian
Lavender, who was a big star
at the time for playing Private
Pike in BBC1’s much-loved
comedy Dad’s Army. At one
point, Lavender caused great
amusement amongst the
crowd when he theatrically
pretended to examine himself
after being hit by the ball
near his private parts. He
eventually made three runs
before being caught.
Top scorer for Edrich’s team
was Pakistan captain Intikhab
Alam who ran up 78 before
being caught. Edrich himself
made 21 runs until Rangers
bowled him out.
Edrich’s side were eventually
declared the winners by four
runs. In saying that, there was
plenty of confusion at the
conclusion as the gentleman
manually operating the
famous old Coral scoreboard
at the School End appeared
to have trouble in adding up
the runs! But no one present
seemed to care.
The match in question was Queens Park
Rangers versus the Middlesex Wanderers
Loftus Road on Monday 9th April 1956.
The last time this programme cropped up on
eBay, I didn’t bid on it as I thought it was just a
reserve-team game for the R’s. But our late and
great club historian Gordon Macey subsequently
told me that it was in fact the QPR first XI, so I’ve
been looking for the programme ever since.
I’ve made appeals here in my Rangers
no avail.
But then suddenly it appeared again on eBay this
I sat on my computer all day when the
|| MEMORY LANE||
AS A SPORTS JOURNALIST WITH THE EALING GAZETTE,
MIKE DONOVAN WAS A MAINSTAY OF THE LOFTUS ROAD
PRESS BOX IN THE 1970S AND 1980S. IN EACH MATCHDAY
PROGRAMME, HE LOOKS BACK ON THOSE UNFORGETTABLE
DAYS OF COVERING QUEENS PARK RANGERS…
STAN Bowles. The very
mention of his name
is enough to evoke an
avalanche of memories
for Queens Park Rangers
supporters.
Not just those who grew up
with him as that generation
would have ensured sons,
daughters, any relation and
their friends would have an
appreciation of Stan the
Man. It was no surprise the
player was voted the club’s
best ever in a 2004 fans’ poll.
And became life chair of the
Queens Park Rangers Loyal
Supporters’ Association.
His skilled, maverick swagger
remains the perfect template
for a club legend who was
the star of arguably Rangers’
finest team when it went
within an ace of the title in the
mid-1970s. Many, including a
raconteur of a friend of mine
who struggled to untie his
tongue when introduced to
the great man, clearly feel he
is the closest any Ranger has
come to walking on water.
And the love affair all began
with a five-star debut against
Nottingham Forest, tonight’s
visitors, at a mild, sunny Loftus
Road on 16th September 1972.
HOOPS
Many feel he is the
closest any Ranger has
come to walking on water
QPR boss Gordon Jago
signed Bowles for £112,000
six months after reluctantly
selling talisman Rodney Marsh
to Manchester City, the new
signing’s first club, for almost
double the amount.
Marsh made the Rangers
No.10 shirt his own, but Bowles
was unconcerned about
wearing it as he replaced a club
icon he ‘hadn’t heard of’.
And it was love at first sight with
the Loftus Road faithful as he
scored one and made another
in a virtuoso performance
which helped secure a 3-0
league win over Matt Gillies’
visitors. It was a case of ‘the
king is dead, long live the king’.
And it remained that way as
Bowles bestrode his kingdom
for more than 300 games while
scoring nearly 100 goals over
seven years in W12.
I remember journeying up to
Forest’s City Ground to see
Bowles perform for QPR in a
second fifth-round FA Cup
replay in three days in 1978.
The last leg of the journey was
along the banks of the River
Trent. It was dark and squelchy.
A side door opened to provide
light and mark my destination.
As I walked through it into
the stadium, Peter Taylor was
there. Brian Clough’s partner in
the hosts’ management team
looked down at my muddied
shoes and told me: “You need
some Cherry Blossom on
those.”
Rangers lost 3-1 and I recall
waiting long after the final
whistle for Clough to emerge
for interview before being
forced to scurry off to catch
the last train home minus his
words of wisdom. But Bowles
managed a goal which must
have caught Old Big ‘Ead’s eye.
Bowles joined Clough’s
European Cup holders in
December 1979. The switch
came following a media spat
with Rangers boss Tommy
Docherty. The manager was
quoted saying: “You can trust
me, Stan,” to which the player’s
reply was noted as “I’d rather
trust my chickens with Colonel
Sanders.”
He helped Forest to back-toback
successes in the premier
continental competition during
what was his only season with
them. It was, though, reported
that he ruled himself out of
the final because Clough
refused him permission to
play in a testimonial match
for winger John Robertson,
who scored the winner in the
European Cup decider against
Hamburg at the Bernabeu on
28th May 1980. But what has
been less reported is the fact
that Bowles helped Forest
clinch the European Super Cup
against Barcelona in front of
80,000 at the Camp Nou three
months earlier.
Giving Football Back to
Small Business
At eBay, we know small business and
football clubs used to be like chips and
gravy, two peas in a pod – a match
made in community heaven.
Ironmongers, ship workers, spring
makers and cobblers, all formed clubs
which decades later are still prospering.
But nowadays, you’d think it was all
eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues
and mega sponsors, detached from the
humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support
300,000 small businesses who help
power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be
donating our advertising space to a lot
of these businesses – on match day
hoardings, around grounds and beyond –
throughout the coming season, to ensure
they can continue to thrive in our local
communities. So, join us in giving your
support to Small Business Power, because
today, they need us more than ever.
HOOPS
There was nothing starry
about Bowles face to face.
Although he could show
flashes of temper on the pitch,
he was always approachable
and easy going off it. A regular
bloke who liked a gamble,
putting a bet on a few minutes
before kick-off according to his
autobiography, and chatting to
fans in the Springbok pub next
to Loftus Road.
I remember how his down-toearth
character revealed itself
when he moved to Brentford
- another club I featured in the
Ealing Gazette - at the end of
his league career.
He asked me for a lift to the
opening of his wine bar in
Notting Hill, happy to arrive
in my Morris Minor rather
than a fancy limousine. There
seemed no side to him.
My newspaper named him
Brentford’s Player of the
Year in the early 1980s. I
even presented him with the
award. I’m glad we gave it to
him because he didn’t win the
amount of glittering prizes his
talent merited.
Bowles, who kindly helped
promote my Queens Park
Rangers Greatest Games book
in 2013, might have ruffled the
feathers of his managers, like
Malcolm Allison at Manchester
City as well as Docherty and
Clough, and been largely
ignored by England bosses
(limited to only five caps), but
he will forever be adored at
Rangers. Unconditionally.
* Mike Donovan is an author
and award-winning journalist.
He also produced Queens
Park Rangers Greatest
Bowles, no less, helping
to promote it and ‘Sir’
Les Ferdinand writing the
foreword. Has a feel for the
Bush. Taken to Cook’s Pie
market by his mum (who
worked in the area) and dad,
attended concerts at the
out socially in W12 growing
up. Has written a series of
football books, the latest,
CAVERSHAM UNITED
WOMEN 0
QPR booked their place in this year’s
FA Cup first round proper following an
impressive 4-0 victory over Caversham
at the Powerday Stadium.
Strikes from Melanie Hall, Ellie Searle,
Brogan Moore and Demi Edwards
wrapped up a professional performance
by Steve Quashie’s side.
Hall got the ball rolling with her opening
effort when she slotted home within 11
minutes, before Searle doubled Rangers’
advantage with a terrific solo goal on the
half-hour mark.
Her fine run down the left-hand side
created the opportunity for a shot
which she comfortably buried at the
second opportunity past the helpless
visiting keeper.
It wasn’t all one-way traffic. R’s stopper
Erin Pope had to be on hand to deny
Caversham attacker Steph Nelson
before the break.
But quickly after half-time things got
better for the R’s when Moore headed
home from a floated corner.
With seconds left on the clock
substitute Edwards wrapped up the win
with a tidy finish.
Quashie’s side are back in action on
Sunday (2pm) when they host Hashtag
United at the Powerday Stadium.
HOOPS
Columnist
I
THE JOURNALIST AND BROADCASTER
PENS HIS LATEST COLUMN…
must confess I didn’t get a clear
enough real-time view of whether or
not Charlie Austin’s ‘goal’ against
Sunderland was offside.
A fan at the back of the South Africa Road stand
showed me the freeze-frame image on his phone
moments after the incident and it was clear that
Charlie was onside. There was even a suspicion of
handball by the Sunderland defender.
Yes, it was a poor second-half performance and
the less said about our penalties the better - but
decisions like these from referee Keith Stroud
and his assistants are why VAR is slowly but surely
winning an argument it looked destined to lose.
With some tweaking to interpretations of the
law, VAR appears to be finding its feet in the
Premier League, helped by a Euros where the
technology didn’t dominate the narrative of
the tournament.
Charlie’s disallowed goal, which would surely have
proved enough to secure a quarter-final place in
the Carabao Cup for the first time in 33 seasons,
is a timely reminder of what football was like
before VAR was introduced. We may also have
forgotten that this used to happen quite often -
and personally, I think it’s time we looked at having
VAR in EFL competitions.
I hope some of our younger readers took
the chance to watch The Impossible Job,
the 1993 documentary which revealed the
travails of Graham Taylor’s ill-fated spell as
England manager.
I won’t spoil it for you, but as well as being a
beautifully edited programme which left viewers
as incredulous now as they were 28 years ago,
there were honourable appearances by the QPR
trio of Les Ferdinand, Andy Sinton and David
Bardsley. Catch it on All 4 if you haven’t already.
I’m pleased to say my five-year-old nephew Ruari
thoroughly enjoyed his first competitive game
at QPR. That’s him on the left on the Central line
with his dad Liam, who was pretty exhausted
emotionally after the night’s events.
