THE HEAD COACH
PP
FRANKIE HUNGRY FOR
ANOTHER RESULT
Head coach Frankie McAvoy reflects on the midweek’s game and looks
forward to the visit of the Hatters this afternoon.
Good afternoon and welcome to Deepdale for
another home game. I would like to welcome
Nathan and the players, staff and fans of Luton
here today.
They have had a very positive start to the season and
we will need to put in the same sort of display as we
did in the second half against Coventry City, if we are
to get the result we all want.
Looking back to Wednesday night, I thought that our
game plan was excellent; we knew at times that we
would need to be very structured behind the ball,
because they are excellent. We felt in the first half that
they never cut us open and, credit to the players, I
thought to a man they were magnificent.
The plan was to make sure that we were very, very
hard to beat, make it very tough for Liverpool to play
through us. The worst-case scenario was they went
outside us and put crosses into the box and maybe just
be wary of diagonal runs in off our wing backs.
Unfortunately, we actually got done for that with the
goal in the second half, it was just so disappointing, but
goals change games and credit to Liverpool, they took
their chances, they scored the goals and on another
night we might have put the ball in the net and it could
have been a different story.
I don’t think anybody could have any gripe about the
hunger, the desire, the commitment, the energy and
the enthusiasm. The stats showed we both had nine
attempts each and four on target, so the only thing is
that we knew they would have loads of the ball and we
needed to be aware of that and prepare for that, and
we did to the best of our ability, but, unfortunately, we
were undone.
I DON’T THINK
ANYBODY COULD HAVE
ANY GRIPE ABOUT THE
HUNGER, THE DESIRE,
THE COMMITMENT,
THE ENERGY AND THE
ENTHUSIASM.
But the most important game is now this afternoon
and we have done our recovery and preparation to be
ready for the game.
The support on Wednesday night was superb. To see
Deepdale full was a special sight for everyone at the
club and we want to get the results to make that a
regular occurrence. Please get behind the team like
that again today and together we can get the result
we want.
Enjoy the game.
PLAYER INTERVIEW
PP
FAMILY MAN GREG’S
LIFE-CHANGER
Irish defender Greg Cunningham recently became a father and
he admits that it has been a whirlwind period.
The North End No.3’s partner Cathriona gave birth
to their first daughter, Dacey, during the last
international break and he told The One And Only
how life as a parent was going.
“It has been amazing,” he enthused. “It has been lifechanging.
I have got a baby girl now. Cathriona and Dacey
are doing really well and that’s the most important thing.
“I have loved every minute of it and special credit to the
missus, she has been terrific. In the run up to the games,
whereas normally we’d have taken turns, she has taken
over baby duties, so I could make sure I am right and
now I can’t wait to get home and spend the evenings with
them.”
Back to the football and today’s game against Nathan
Jones’ Luton Town is the culmination of a busy week, that
he reflected on.
“Sometimes you don’t get what you deserve in football,”
he continued. “We were disappointed with the derby day
result last weekend – Blackpool were just very clinical.
And then on Wednesday night we knew Liverpool would
come and dominate the ball. We set up accordingly and we
had the best chances of the first half and were unlucky
and probably frustrated not to go ahead at the break.
“I don’t think they had a shot on target in the first half, but
you can see the quality they possess – they are the best
team in the world and when they get a chance, or a half
chance, they put it away and they did that tonight.
“We can hold our heads up high. We put in a performance
and justified the strength we have in the squad.”
The Liverpool game saw the side have much the better of
the first half and the Irish international full back felt that
they needed to capitalise when on top in the game: “You
have to take those chances when they come along. You
know in games like that, that you are not going to get many
chances, but when they do fall, you have to put them away,
because you know the quality they possess, that if they
do get a chance or a half-chance, they are going to put it
away and they did that on Wednesday night.
I HAVE LOVED
EVERY MINUTE OF
IT AND SPECIAL
CREDIT TO THE
MISSUS, SHE HAS
BEEN TERRIFIC.
“For us not to score, we are disappointed, because we
had – I felt – the best chances of the game, but that’s
football and we were punished, but the boys can hold their
heads up high, because it was fantastic application from
start to finish.
“We have to dust ourselves off and take a lot of confidence
from tonight going forward to the weekend.”
Having led the team out against the Reds, Greg said it
was a special moment: “It is always an honour to wear
the armband for this club, a club that I love. In Browney’s
absence and with DJ not playing, I was delighted to step
up and I had my family in the crowd against the team I
supported as a kid, with Deepdale rocking again. It was a
great honour and a moment I will treasure.”
Onto today, and he admitted that the clash with the Hatters
was the most important game, as it was the next one: “You
look at fixtures and you kind of pencil in different blocks of
games, but as a professional you have to take each game
as it comes and we need to focus on the game against
Luton.
“Before Liverpool we had to focus on doing our best in
that one and now it is done. We have to get recovered and
ready for the Luton game, as it is a quick turnaround, but
that’s our biggest game of the season now, and then it will
be the next one and so on and so forth.”
THE ONE AND ONLY
Ali McCann
Ali Already
Feels Right
At Home
A move between clubs is something Ali McCann had previously not
encountered in his career, so you’d imagine a move of the best part of 300
miles would bring its fair share of challenges.
That’s the situation the midfielder found
himself in when he signed for Preston North
End from St Johnstone, but he feels he’s
settled in really quickly and is already feeling
at home.
Back in Scotland, he had only just moved out of his
parents’ house into a flat of his own, so he had a big
job on his hands to pack pretty much his life into
his car when he made the journey down to his new
surroundings, almost as soon as he landed from
international duty with Northern Ireland.
Signing for North End on Tuesday 31st August sat in
a hotel room in Belfast, he was then soon in another
temporary home when he eventually got the chance to
come down to Lancashire a week and a half later, first
moving into Farington Lodge Hotel.
“I was there for maybe only three weeks,” he told The
One And Only. “It was weird because I was in a hotel in the
international break and then came straight to a hotel here.
“The club help you out by putting you up, which is great,
but obviously it’s not quite the same as your own place
– having to have your dinner downstairs, sitting in your
hotel room, there’s not much you can do.
“But I guess you can’t really complain about that. You’ve
got a roof over your head sorting you out until you
manage to get your own living situation. Thankfully I’ve
got that now, I’m settled and it’s good.
“My car was still just full of stuff so the sooner I got
myself sorted the better, so I managed to get that done
in three weeks.
“I’ve moved that all into my new place now so it feels like
home. It didn’t take all that long to get settled and I’m
happy where I am at the minute.”
His transfer to PNE did, of course, eventually come off,
but the evening of deadline day proved to be an anxious
one to see whether or not the move would materialise.
Ali admitted: “It was really stressful; it was like nothing
I’ve ever experienced before. I was picking up the
phone every five minutes speaking to different people,
then putting it down and sitting in silence in my room
for another five minutes and then picking the phone
back up.
10

THE BIG INTERVIEW
11

THE ONE AND ONLY
“But by the end, when I managed to put my phone down
at like half 11 when it was all done, it was kind of relief to
start with and then the excitement started building.
“Then when the international break was over, coming
back I knew I had to get my head down, get down the
road and get going again which was exciting.”
It’s probably not the most orthodox way that a player
has ever signed for a club – resigned to a hotel room in
another country – and Ali then had three international
matches to switch on for, one of which was to come two
days later.
However, the 21-year-old didn’t feel the move affected his
focus on his national team.
He said: “When I woke up the next morning, a few of
the lads were congratulating me and asking me what
happened, but as soon as I got back into the training and
the games, I put it on the back burner for the ten days
because I had three games to focus on.
“We got them out the way, got some good results too,
and then it was when I was flying back on the Thursday
getting back to my house thinking I’ve got to pack
my stuff up and drive down, that was when it really
settled in.
“It then all became real on the Friday when I turned up
and got to meet everyone. It’s a great feeling coming in
on your first day, meeting everyone and putting the gear
on, that was when it kind of sunk in.
“But I’ve not really looked back since then. Everyone’s
made me feel really welcome, at home and I’ve managed
to settle in quite easily.”
Part of the reason he feels he’s been able to fit in so
quickly is down to the nature of the group, describing
the squad as ‘close knit’ and finding there are no cliques.
A good way to get to know your team-mates even better
is on the pitch, and Ali was just starting to build his
minutes up with substitute appearances before then
getting his first Championship start in the away game
against Queens Park Rangers at the start of the month.
That didn’t quite go to plan though, having to come off
after just 25 minutes due to injury, but he’s now back in
action, having made his return on Wednesday evening in
the Carabao Cup tie against Liverpool.
“Just to be back involved is great,” he added. “Obviously
it wasn’t an ideal situation having to be taken off 25
minutes into my first start after I’d worked my way in.
“I’ve rarely been injured in my career, just bumps
and bruises really, so it was disappointing, but that
sometimes happens.
“I’ve worked hard to get myself back and I’m even just
buzzing to be back in training, and then to be involved in
games is great.
IT DIDN’T TAKE
ALL THAT LONG TO
GET SETTLED AND
I’M HAPPY WHERE
I AM.
THE BIG INTERVIEW
“That’s the way you become a proper part of the team
and the club, by stringing a fair few games together, and
once you rack up those performances you feel a proper
part of it.
“I’ve managed to get myself right now and hopefully I can
get involved more and play as many games as I can for
this team.”
Having previously played all his football for St Johnstone,
where he was part of the history-making side which
won two domestic trophies last season, there was
always likely to be some adjusting to a new division in the
Championship.
Ali said: “The standard up in Scotland probably doesn’t
get the credit it’s due down here, because it’s tough
games every week there, but I think there is a step up in
physicality and sharpness down here.
“You’ve just got to adapt to that though and the more
you’re in the games, even just as a sub for 20 minutes,
you get more and more used to it, and then of course
the more games you start I imagine the more you
acclimatise to it.
“It’s been hectic since I got here because it’s been
midweek games every week and we don’t really have
that up in Scotland, but it’s probably the best thing you
could do to be honest, because you’d rather play games
than train.
HOPEFULLY I CAN
GET INVOLVED MORE
AND PLAY AS MANY
GAMES AS I CAN FOR
THIS TEAM.
“Although it maybe takes its toll on the legs and for the
lads that play week in, week out, it’s a tough shift, but
that’s why we play football.
“The games are when you enjoy yourself and prove why
you’re here, so you can spin it both ways. It’s a tough
shift and credit to the lads that have played every week
since I’ve been here because it’s been a tough schedule.”
The busy period continues this afternoon before two
away trips then to AFC Bournemouth and Nottingham
Forest next week.
League action then pauses for a fortnight after PNE’s
journey to the City Ground, and Ali will be hoping to be
back involved with his country over the break as they
complete their World Cup qualification campaign with
games against Lithuania and Italy.
PREVIEW
The 2021/22 Championship campaign
marks Luton’s third consecutive
season back in England’s second tier.
The Hatters made it back there after
over a decade away, but back-to-back
promotion campaigns sealed their place
in the Championship, with Luton winning
27 of their 2018/19 League One games to
confirm their place.
Luton have gradually improved in the
league, finishing 19th in 2019/20 before
pushing to 12th last year. Now, the team
are pushing even higher, currently
sitting fifth at the time of writing.
Manager Nathan Jones has mostly
fielded a 3-4-1-2 formation, which
allowed them to shockingly thump
Coventry City 5-0, while they were on
the wrong end of the same scoreline
against Birmingham.
Their transfer business has been
calculated this season, bringing in Fred
Onyedinma from Wycombe by the fangenerated
‘Transfer Club’ fund. They
also signed Blackburn’s Amari’i Bell and
Hull’s Reece Burke for free, who are
both only 24-years-old.
Key players this season have included
right winger Harry Cornick, who has
currently scored six goals with two
assists. Midfielder Luke Berry has
netted four times in just seven league
appearances, also contributing an
assist.
With attention focused on this
afternoon, the Hatters will no doubt
take confidence from their last three
meetings with North End.
They have drawn once and won twice
since June 2020, however, an absence
of fans during this time may have been
a factor.
The home crowd at Deepdale back
in 2019 edged the Lilywhites to a 2-1
victory, so only time will tell who comes
out on top.

Naismith joined the Hatters as a free agent in January
2021, fresh from his departure with Wigan Athletic earlier
that month. He started his senior career back in Scotland
with Rangers, before moving south to Accrington in 2013.
He would only make 79 appearances as a Stanley player,
making a move to Portsmouth soon after. He silenced all
doubters in the 2016/17 League Two campaign, scoring 13
goals and providing ten assists to help his side become
champions. The Luton debut came as a substitute against
Bournemouth in January, but Naismith quickly became
a regular near the end of the season. He has now been
deployed as a centre back this season, playing the full
90 minutes in almost every Championship fixture as club
captain.
Sluga broke Luton’s 30-year transfer record, signing
from top Croatian side HNK Rijeka for over £1.5m in July
2019. The ‘keeper grew in the Academy of Italian giants
Juventus, but it was at his former club Rijeka where he
proved himself. Sluga won the domestic league title in
2016/17 and two Croatian League Cups to make his debut
for his senior national side in 2019. The shot-stopper
had to overcome difficulties in his debut Hatters season,
yet still made 33 appearances, keeping six clean sheets.
Incredible form would continue to build, so much so that
he was crowned 2020/21 player of the season and away
player of the season. After 12 clean sheets in 39 games, he
was rewarded with a place in Croatia’s Euro 2020 squad.
29
The right-sided defender, now being used further up the
field for Luton, came on loan from the Premier League’s
Aston Villa in the 2019/20 season. Bree was a part of
Villa since 2017, initially signing from Barnsley for close
to £3m. He struggled to find a regular spot at Villa Park,
meaning he was free to explore options away from the
club. Bree chose Luton Town as his next loan move, and
enjoyed a fruitful season of results, playing 42 times in all
2019/20 competitions. Bree returned on a permanent deal
in September 2020, leaving behind the West Midlands for
Bedfordshire. As the new Championship season is well
underway, he hasn’t missed a mark, assisting twice and
featuring in all league matches at the time of writing.
Kenilworth Road on a free transfer from Lancashire’s
Blackburn Rovers in June 2021. It was at Rovers where he
made 99 appearances, helping them earn promotion back
to the Championship in 2018. His performances caught
the attention of the Jamaica national team. Bell made his
debut for the Reggae Boyz in March 2021 against USA,
also playing a full 90 minutes against Serbia in a June
international friendly. His only goal so far for the Hatters
proved to be the match-winner as his strike sealed a 1-0
Elijah Adebayo
The 6ft 4in forward used his release from Fulham as a
stepping stone to glory with the Hatters. Adebayo found
himself at Walsall after departing the Cottagers, going
on to score 18 goals in 39 League Two starts before Luton
came knocking. They fought off interest from other
English and Scottish clubs and tied him down in February
2021 on a permanent deal. On his first start for his new
club against Millwall, he scored, much to the delight of the
fans. He’d continue this level of performance, scoring and
assisting against Sheffield Wednesday soon after. Adebayo
currently sits top of the scoring charts for the club,
bagging seven goals so far this season.
Currently among the Championship’s highest goalscorers,
Cornick has the recipe for success. Luton acquired the
forward from AFC Bournemouth in August 2017, before
agreeing a contract extension which keeps him at the club
until June 2022. He wasn’t always in the form that he is in
now, which is testament to his impressive transition into
Championship football. Cornick’s standout campaign came
in 2019/20, finishing with nine goals and four assists. He
picked up goal of the season, away player of the season,
junior supporters’ player of the season and the players’
player of the season trophies during that time. Now, he
already has six goals and two assists, well on his way to
THE ONE AND ONLY
LAST FIVE
MANAGERS
JOHN STILL // FEBRUARY 2013 TO DECEMBER 2015 // ENGLISH
John Still aimed to bring stability back to Luton, joining
in 2013 with the club in the National League. He finished
in seventh come the end of the season, but the following
term Still confirmed the Hatters’ long-awaited return to
the Football League accumulating the most points in club
history. However, Still was sacked in December 2015,
leaving the club 17th in League Two.
THE BOSS
NATHAN JONES
MAY 2020 TO PRESENT
WELSH
Close to 18 months after
originally leaving Luton for
Stoke, Nathan Jones was
reappointed as manager in May
2020. He expressed deep regret
for his managerial switch and
promised to win back fans of
the Hatters. Through hard work,
Jones was successful in pulling
the club out of the relegation
zone on the final day of the
season, ending 19th despite
taking over when they were in
23rd. The next Championship
campaign was much better,
finishing 12th with 62 points
– Luton’s highest points total
in the second tier since the
1981/82 season. Currently sat
fifth, Jones has gone some
way to establish a strong
Championship side.
NATHAN JONES // JANUARY 2016 TO JANUARY 2019 // WELSH
Jones joined in 2016, His first full season saw the club
reach the EFL Trophy semi-final, as well as the League
Two Play-Off semi-final. Destined to escape League Two in
2017/18, Jones made Luton the highest scoring team in the
country in early December, winning promotion to League
One in April 2018 with a second-place finish. He’d continue
to light up the Football League by leading his men to second
in League One by January 2019, but left for Stoke.
MICK HARFORD // JANUARY 2019 TO MAY 2019 // ENGLISH
Once Jones left the club in January 2019, Harford, who
was already at the club, became caretaker manager. He
won five of his first six league games in charge, which
saw Luton go six points clear at the top of League One. His
contract was extended until the end of the 2018/19 season
and the Hatters were crowned champions of League One,
earning Harford the League One manager of the year
award.
GRAEME JONES // MAY 2019 TO APRIL 2020 // ENGLISH
In May 2019, Graeme Jones agreed to become the new
permanent manager of Luton Town. Prior to their 2019/20
Championship season, he brought in plenty of new signings
including current ‘keeper Simon Sluga, but by the turn of
the new year, Luton sat 23rd in the Championship which
meant a potential relegation scrap. The pandemic also
severely halted his club’s progression and Jones left by
mutual consent in April 2020, with only ten league wins all
season.
The Lilywhites head coach
One PNE player who needs
more action is Alan Browne,
the skipper having played his
first 45 minutes of pre-season
in last Saturday’s 1-1 draw with
Accrington Stanley.
Browne has revealed he
had keyhole surgery on a hip
injury at the end of last season
and his rehab meant he was
only able to start training
towards the end of the squad’s
time in Scotland.
With that first bit of action
under his belt, the midfielder
will now be looking to give his
match fitness a boost.
Tonight’s game (7pm) could
pit three Preston players
against their former club.
Ched Evans started his
career at City, while City paid
£6.2m to land Scott Sinclair
from Swansea nine years ago.
Greg Cunningham’s first
taste of English football was
with City, the Irish left-back
playing four times for them
after being a trainee.
The games this week will
come too early for Matthew
Olosunde as he recovers from
an Achilles tendon knock.
Giving Football Back to
Small Business
At eBay, we know small business and
football clubs used to be like chips and
gravy, two peas in a pod – a match
made in community heaven.
Ironmongers, ship workers, spring
makers and cobblers, all formed clubs
which decades later are still prospering.
But nowadays, you’d think it was all
eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues
and mega sponsors, detached from the
humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support
300,000 small businesses who help
power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be
donating our advertising space to a lot
of these businesses – on match day
hoardings, around grounds and beyond –
throughout the coming season, to ensure
they can continue to thrive in our local
communities. So, join us in giving your
support to Small Business Power, because
today, they need us more than ever.
PRESTON NORTH END’S
TOP FLIGHT DECADE
By Ian Rigby
TOMMY
THOMPSON
Born: Fence Houses, County Durham, 10th November 1928
Died: Preston, 15th September 2015
Signed from: Aston Villa, 29th June 1955
Transferred to: Stoke City, 19th June 1961
1951 to 1961
HISTORICAL
Tommy ‘Topper’ Thompson was one of the best
goalscorers of his time, scoring during his professional
career an average of one goal every two games from
1948 to 1964, a phenomenal strike rate in any era.
Born in a Northumberland village near Houghton-le-Spring, he
was spotted playing locally for Lumley YMCA before signing for
Newcastle United in August 1946. He made his league debut in
1948, the year that Newcastle United gained promotion to the
First Division. By 1950 he had signed for Aston Villa where his
reputation as a regular goalscorer grew, so much so that he
gained his first England international cap in 1951 against Wales.
Preston North End were looking for such a player to take over
from Charlie Wayman in the mid-1950s and successfully signed
Tommy in the summer of 1955 for £27,000. Within two minutes
of his debut at Goodison Park against Everton, he notched his
first of many goals for the Lilywhites. He top scored for the
club in his first four seasons having settled in easily, partnering
Tom Finney in many of his appearances. The 34 goals he bagged
during the 1957/58 season is still a North End record in the top
flight and was so close to matching Ted Harper’s 37 goals that
was recorded back in 1932/33 during our second division days.
Ironically his 100th league goal for PNE came against his former
club Aston Villa in what was his 153rd league game. Tommy,
as a North Ender, gained a second England cap but his biggest
career disappointment was not scoring for his country. He also
represented England ‘B’ and The Football League, in fact he once
scored four goals for the latter, again at Goodison Park, his first
coming after just 12 seconds! From Deepdale he went to Stoke
City where he played alongside Sir Stanley Matthews having
played his entire North End career alongside Sir Tom Finney.
THE ONE AND ONLY
Born In Preston,
Played For North End
by Mike Payne
During Preston North End’s 141 year history, over 100 first-team players have been born here, in
Preston, and in this series of articles I would like to feature a selection of those that went on to play
for the club. I have decided to choose them at random, as I want to reach across the various eras,
to highlight the different social and sporting periods in which they played the game. They all had one
thing in common though, and it was that they were so proud to represent their hometown team.
PROUD PLAYERS
FOR PROUD PRESTON
Signing players as associated schoolboys was
popular in the 1970s and 80s and one such player
who joined his hometown club was a pupil from
schools in Bamber Bridge and Walton-le-Dale. His
name was Mark Walsh, a utility player who first
signed in May 1979. In October of the following
year he was signed on as a professional, and the
youngster could play in defence or midfield, and
was very adaptable. He worked his way through
the junior ranks at Deepdale, before playing
several Central League games. It was Tommy
Docherty, in his short tenure as manager of North
End, who gave Walsh his first team debut in the
opening day defeat at Millwall at the start of the
1981/82 season. PNE lost 2-1, but Walsh did well and
scored North End’s goal with a left-footed drive
that deflected off a Millwall player. That goal came
in the last minute of the game, but Walsh’s hard
work had not gone unnoticed.
Despite being at North End in one of the worst
periods in our history, he always gave everything,
and he played under four different managers in
his time at Deepdale. In the summer of 1984, after
over 60 league games, Walsh was released by the
club before his career took an unusual twist. He
joined forces with another released player, Andy
Murphy, to join a club in Auckland, New Zealand.
However, he wasn’t there for long before returning
to England in 1985 to play as a non-contract
player for Exeter City, making just one more
Football League appearance. After that he played
non-league football for a variety of clubs, including
Morecambe, Chorley and Clitheroe.
HISTORICAL
If you look through a list of Preston North End
players you won’t find John Fishwick listed. That
is because John chose to be called John (Jack)
Barton during his long association with North
End. Not to be confused with John Barton the
goalkeeper, Jack first arrived at Deepdale as long
ago as 1891, and arrived in a different capacity than
you would imagine. Although he was registered
as a player, he actually joined the club as the first
team trainer, and that wasn’t all from this amazing
man’s story. On 25th November 1893, Jack found
out that he was in the North End team that travelled
to Aston Villa. He had to play because of injuries,
and filled in at outside right in a 2-0 defeat. Don’t
forget he was also trainer to the team, so one
wonders what the banter was like in the dressing
room that day?
One of Jack’s claims to fame was that he played
in the famous 18-0 FA Cup win over Reading in
January 1894. Not only did he play, but he also
scored a hat-trick! The next match, away at
Darwen, saw him in the team again, but this was
to be his last appearance. However, he continued
to train the team until 1897, when he left to join
Wigan County, but that was not the end of his
North End days. During World War One he was
employed as North End’s groundsman/trainer at
a wage of just £1 per week. He then continued as
club trainer right through to 1924. There is one
last story I would like to relate about
Jack. In July 1938, he and his wife, who
had 13 children, celebrated their golden
wedding anniversary. In an interview at
the time he came out with this classic
quote: “Back then, it was the trainer’s
job to mark out the pitch, sweep the
stands, train the players, accompany
them to away games, sometimes act
as linesman and if necessary, play!”.
How on earth did he find the time to
have 13 kids? What an amazing chap.
Sometimes a player born in
Preston has to play for other clubs
before he finally finds his way
to Deepdale. Adam Nowland
was one such player, and whisper it quietly, it
was Blackpool that gave the midfield player his
league baptism. He signed for them in 1998 and
made his first team debut as a 17-year-old. His
football career took in several clubs after that,
but only at Blackpool and Wimbledon did he top 50
appearances. He finally joined his
hometown club in August 2005, on a free
transfer from Nottingham Forest, making a
good start at Deepdale. Alas, the following
January, in an away match at Norwich,
he suffered a nasty broken leg following a
challenge by Dickson Etuhu, who ironically
was on loan at Carrow Road from North End
at the time. Nowland scored for Preston that
day too in a 3-0 win. It was a bad injury for
Nowland though, but to show his determination,
he did make a couple of attempts at a comeback,
desperately trying to restart his North End
playing career. It was not to be, as in September
2007, manager Paul Simpson sent him out on a
couple of loan spells, before new manager Alan
Irvine finally released the player in January 2008.
Nowland did play more football, including a return
to Blackpool, but his future was in the USA where
he played in the American Soccer League, and later
set up his own football academy.
HISTORICAL
David Lucas
David Lucas, born in Preston, began his career at his hometown club and would go
on to spend a decade playing professionally for the Lilywhites. His debut for North
End probably couldn’t have come on a better occasion, making his PNE bow in a 2-0
win against Hartlepool United, which clinched the third division title for his side. He
impressed in between the sticks for North End, and also when out on a few loan deals,
and he resultantly was involved heavily in the England youth setup. He’d go on to battle
with the likes of Tepi Moilanen and Jonathan Gould for the goalkeeper jersey, and when
he moved on from Deepdale in 2004 he had 150 PNE appearances to his name.
Thorsten Stuckmann
Known affectionately as ‘Stucki’, German goalkeeper Thorsten Stuckmann was and
still is a favourite among the fans. He first joined the club in League One in 2011 from
German side Alemannia Aachen, and he was a star performer, being named the Sir Tom
Finney Player of the Year in the 2011/12 campaign. There went on to be times where
he had to play back up, though, but he still remained well-liked, enjoying several good
performances, arguably the most memorable of those coming in an incredible 10-9
penalty shootout win against Oldham Athletic. Not only was he saving penalties in that
shootout, but he scored the winning spot kick too!
Jordan Pickford
When a 21-year-old Jordan Pickford joined PNE on loan from Sunderland in 2015, not
many supporters knew what they were getting, but he went on to have a remarkable
half-a-season with North End. He came up with countless good saves throughout his
stay at Deepdale, with arguably the best of them coming against Burnley at Turf Moor,
acrobatically denying Sam Vokes in a 2-0 win. The goalkeeper kept an impressive 13
clean sheets in his 24 Championship games for the club before being recalled by his
parent club. During his time at Deepdale, the home supporters often chanted ‘Jordan
Pickford, England’s No.1’, and while many would have thought they were being ironic,
that is exactly what he went on to become.
@ANTATKY HOW WAS IT
SCORING YOUR FIRST
GOAL FOR JAMAICA?
It was a proud moment for myself
and my family. Being born in Jamaica
it was always something I wanted to
do, but to go out there and actually
score a goal, I can’t really describe
the feeling.
@I_DJBENT_I OPINIONS
ON PINEAPPLE ON PIZZA?
Yes, yes, 1000 per cent yes. If you
think you’re weird.
@OLIBANKS_X3 HOW DID
YOU BECOME FRIENDS
I don’t even remember to be honest.
I think we were probably just in the
then we just stayed in contact. Nothing
exciting.
@ADRIAN6GOMEZ WHAT’S
Jamaica, hands down, for obvious
reasons.
@COOPSEY91 HAVE YOU
EVER SANG THE 50 GRAND
Not to myself, but recently my
daughter has been singing it quite a lot
around the house. She doesn’t actually
say Daniel, she says ‘Daddy Johnson’
which she thinks the fans actually say.
@MENILEK_11 WHO IS
YOUR FAVOURITE RAPPER?
This is hard this. I can’t split between
these three, so I’ll say Lil Durk, Lil Baby
or Meek Mill.

@KRISTIBOBS WHAT
FIRST ATTRACTED YOU TO
I think the direction the club was
going in. I was at Chesterfield,
played here against North End and I
could see the strength of the squad.
I knew a few of them at the time
18TH FEBRUARY 2018 // FA CUP FIFTH ROUND
ROCHDALE 2
(HENDERSON, 45; DAVIES, 90+3)
TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 2
(MOURA, 59; KANE, PEN 88)
AS IT HAPPENED:
League One side Rochdale earn a late draw against
Tottenham Hotspur in the fifth round of the FA Cup, setting up
a replay at Wembley.
“I think we went 1-0 up before going 2-1
down, and then one of my good mates,
Steve Davies, scored late on and got an
equaliser.
“I know you want to go through, but to be
honest we wanted a replay at Wembley as
well, so it was great. They played pretty much
a full strength team. Lucas Moura, Dele Alli,
Harry Kane and Toby Alderweireld all played.
“I was marking Lucas Moura. There’s actually
a funny picture I showed the lads, I think we
went up for a header and I was grabbing his
face, it’s quite funny to be fair.
“It was a good test. I enjoy playing against
players like that because you watch them on
the TV week in, week out and it’s good to see
where you’re at and to see how good they are.
“I always tell people the replay was 1-1 at halftime.
At full-time it was a bit different at 6-1,
but what I can say is the one time I’ve ever got
to go and play at Wembley it was minus seven
and it was snowing.
“On top of that, the
kit man forgot my
underarmour as
well, so I was in
short sleeves. I’ve
never been so
cold in all my life.
Everyone thought I
was hard, but no,
he’d forgotten my
underarmour!”
THE ONE AND ONLY
ACADEMY REVIEW
With last weekend’s trip to Shrewsbury Town called off due to Covid cases in the Salop
camp, The One And Only took the opportunity to sit down with Academy Manager Nick
Harrison to review the season so far.
It has been a change of approach for all Category 3
Academies in 2021/22 with the change to an U19 league and
the introduction of U17 games as well and Nick believes this
has really benefitted the group at PNE.
Speaking to the matchday programme he said: “In terms of
the two age groups we have now that regularly play on a
Saturday [U17 and U19s], it has been a really positive start.
“What has been good about the structure, is that all the
scholars are playing on a regular basis and it allows us to
accelerate a large number of younger players up into the
U17s and even into the U19s, so from that point of view, it has
been really positive.”
And the addition of the Central League into the mix, has given
further development chances: “The reserve league gives the
boys who are 17, 18 and 19 that next level. It is a big jump to
get from youth level to first team football, especially when
the first team are in the Championship, so this gives those
players a chance at another level.
“We also have boys who are out on loan as well, which has
worked really well over the past number of seasons. The
structure from the U17s up to the reserves just gives them
more opportunities to develop for first team football, if they
get the opportunity.”
Over the last 18 months there have also been some big
changes to the full-time staffing at the Academy, with Paul
Gray, John Prince and Matt Craddock all moving on to
pastures new, but Nick has seen this as a chance to develop.
“We have been lucky to have some outstanding members
of staff for a number of years and, like any business, staff
go onto other things and that has happened over the last 18
months,” he continued.
“People have wanted to take other opportunities, whether
that is at other football clubs or other organisations, but I
always believe that when that happens, it is an opportunity
and what we have managed to achieve recently with
the three new members of staff, Mel [Brown – Youth
Development Phase Coach U9 to U11], Michael [Stringellow –
Head of Coaching] and now John [Welsh - Youth Development
Phase Coach U12 to U16] is a real positive for us – everybody
is different.
“The three of them are going to bring different ideas. We
have an excellent schoolboy programme – if you look at our
scholars, the majority of them come from our schoolboy
programme already; Josh Earl came all the way through, as
did Ben Davies, so I think it really shows that over a number
of years it really works and I strongly believe that Mel,
Michael and John will add a lot of value to what is already a
good programme and I am sure they will keep bringing the
players through into scholarship level and hopefully into the
first team, as we have seen with Josh and Ben.”
But what has Covid meant to the way the Academy has
operated?
“It has just been about getting the programme back to what
it was. Just getting it back to pre-Covid. Covid has changed
the way we work a little bit, in a positive way – things like
using Zoom to our advantage and having remote meetings or
video sessions with players and parents.
“The last 18 months, like for everyone else, has been turmoil
and it really hindered the development programme. For at
least a year the lads weren’t doing any weight programmes;
it was hard to get any face-to-face meetings with players
or parents at the younger level, so what we have seen
since the start of this season has been the introduction of
Springfields, which has been absolutely fantastic for not just
the scholars and young pros, but we have also utilised it for
the schoolboy programme.
“This week we had all the U15s and U16s down because it was
half-term and it gave us a really good environment to work
with these younger players. We know Covid is still around
and there are still a number of restrictions in place, but
it has been so much better this season and hopefully that
continues,” he added.
MIKEY SAYS CONFIDENCE
THE KEY TO PROGRESS
Mikey O’Neill has impressed so far in the U19s this season and showed his
development with a goal and an assist in Tuesday’s Central League win over
Bolton Wanderers.
After the game, he spoke to The
One And Only and admitted he
has enjoyed the experience of
playing in the fixture in front of more
than 100 fans at Euxton.
“It felt really good,” he told the
matchday programme. “I was pleased
we got the result, won 3-0, got the
clean sheet and on a personal note I
am really happy that I scored, got 90
minutes and then got an assist to top
it off at the end as well, so I was really
happy with the game.
“At the start of the season when I saw
the club had re-joined the Central
League I was really happy about
it, because I knew that would be
opportunities to get in front of Frankie
and Gally and show what I can do and it
is good that I have had a chance with a
full 90 this week.
“There was also a decent turn out and
it gets you used to playing in front of
more spectators.”
His development since the start of
the new season has been evident,
becoming one of the first names on
the U19s team sheet and taking the
captain’s armband on more than one
occasion, so what has changed?
“I just feel a lot more confident this
season. When I came back, I was
playing well right from the start and
each game I was playing I was getting
more and more confident and now
every game I am ready to go – nothing
has really changed physically.
“I have felt really good so far. This
season has been one of my favourites
ever at present and I just feel that I am
getting better and better and hopefully
this is just the start and that I can keep
playing with the reserves and building
up my games.
“I feel like there has been a big step
up in my performances. Last season, I
wouldn’t say I struggled, but now I am
a lot more confident and a lot more
used to how things work and you can
see it with the way I am playing, which
is better all around.
“It feels good when Nick [Harrison] is
giving me compliments, it just makes
you feel good and more eager to show
what you can do in my games.
“I feel like for any player that
confidence is the biggest thing. If you
are confident, you will get on the ball
and show what you can do and you can
hopefully see that in my game at the
moment.”
And he feels the addition of the likes of
John Welsh and Michael Stringfellow
to an already accomplished coaching
staff will assist his development even
further: “John has just joined and he
was a midfielder as well and I am sure
he can help me a lot and help me with
my game.
“On the coaching staff there are a lot
of ex-professional players and I do like
working with them, because they have
been through it and experienced things
and can help me with my own game,
because they know what it is like at the
top level.
“I really enjoyed working with Gally
when I was in the U16s and I am glad
that with the reserve games I have had
the chance to work with him again –
he has really helped me,” he added.
Goals from Mikey O’Neill, Joe Rodwell-Grant and Adam
O’Reilly gave the Lilywhites a comfortable victory in their
latest Central League fixture.
They were two up at the break against Bolton Wanderers
at Euxton, O’Neill firing home from the returning Matthew
Olosunde’s right-wing cross, before Rodwell-Grant scored a
poacher’s goal, on the edge of the six-yard box after skipper
Paul Huntington had fired Jamie Thomas’ corner goalwards.
And they capped off a positive display with five minutes to go
when some good play saw Irish midfielder O’Reilly collect the
ball just inside the box, with his shot deflecting off a defender
and up and over the Trotters’ trialist goalkeeper Mateusz
Hewelt.
Olosunde was making his first competitive appearance in
a lilywhite shirt, having not played any football since the
pre-season trip to St Johnstone and after feeling his way into
the game, he had a positive impact and played an hour, as had
been scheduled beforehand.
It was quite a young side that North End had out, but they were
in the ascendency from the off. Liam Edwards having to make
a block from Jacob Holland-Wilkinson’s effort, after Lewis
Coulton’s cross from the left on nine minutes.
Holland-Wilkinson was again involved five minutes later; good
play from the forward to find Adam O’Reilly down the right, but
his reverse ball was just behind the PNE players in the crowded
penalty area.
Joe Blanchard headed down a Lewis Leigh cross that led to
Rodwell-Grant having an effort smothered by Hewelt, before
a good lay-off from O’Neill gave Thomas a chance to shoot,
the stopper tipping over. From the resulting Thomas corner,
Huntington headed inches wide of the right-hand post.
But it was 1-0 just before the half hour mark after Olosunde
should a clean pair of heels to the Bolton left back, got to level
with the six-yard line before delivering a hard low cross, that
O’Neill fired into the net at the back post.
And it was 2-0 within two minutes as Thomas swung over a
corner from the right to the edge of the box, where Huntington
put the ball into the area, for Rodwell-Grant to fire into the roof
of the net from the edge of the six-yard box.
With a few minutes to go before half-time, there was almost
a carbon copy of the second goal, however, this time Hewelt
managed to get his chest in the way of Rodwell-Grant’s effort.
The second half was much of the same; O’Reilly nicked the ball
off the Bolton midfield on 52 minutes before sending Rodwell-
Grant down a left-hand channel, he cut in and shot goalwards,
but the visiting custodian saved with his legs.
The only real chance of the game created by Wanderers came
a minute later as Mitchell Henry had a shot saved by Mathew
Hudson and then Matthew Tweedley put the follow-up just wide.
Just before the hour mark a curling effort from O’Neill, from
20 yards out, came off the head of Bolton captain Edwards,
which took it narrowly past the right-hand upright, with
Hewelt beaten.
But the third finally arrived with just five minutes left; O’Reilly
working himself space on the edge of the area, to open up his
body for a shot, that Edwards got a boot on, but only enough to
take the ball up and over Hewelt and into the goal.
Two good chances in the final minute came the way of Rodwell-
Grant to add to his and the team’s total, created by two
substitutes – Harry Nevin and Levi Lewis, but the first came
back off the bar and the second brought another good save
from the visiting No.1 and the game finished 3-0.
THE ONE AND ONLY
FEATURED PROGRAMME:
PNE FORCES
With this afternoon’s game against Luton Town marking our Remembrance fixture, the PNE Forces
programme comes under the microscope in this latest edition of The One And Only.
Preston North End Community and Education Trust is
supporting past and present members of the Armed
Forces through its PNE Forces programme, through
funding from the Veterans’ Foundation over a three-year
period.
PNE Forces engages past and present members of the
military and their family through a series of engaging
activities, most prominently with a free weekly football
session.
Our football hour runs from 8pm until 9pm every
Wednesday, bringing together people with a military
background, while providing informational resources
to support those who access the programme where
necessary.
Participants also have the opportunity to represent
PNECET in the Veterans Football League, against other
Club Community Organisations. Recent fixtures have seen
North End face Oldham Athletic and Blackpool within the
last month – the latter just nine days ago and resulting in
a win for our participants!
Those participants will also be looking forward to more
outings in the coming weeks – with involvement in
Wigan’s ‘Remembrance Cup’ tournament next weekend,
and another fixture against AFC Fylde scheduled for later
in November.
PNECET has also pledged its commitment to past and
present Armed Forces personnel through the Armed
Forces Covenant, which was signed two years ago ahead
of the Remembrance fixture against Blackburn Rovers, in
October 2019.
We will be celebrating the PNE Forces programme this
afternoon and our relationships with local Armed Forces
groups through various activities, alongside other prematch
activities to mark the Remembrance fixture.
Soliders will march out next to the players’ tunnel and
assemble in front of the dugout during the last post.
Cpl James Kirby of the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment is
among those forming part of the pre-match remembrance
activities, and is the coach of Ribbleton U12s.
Earlier this year, he completed a 156-mile march while
carrying 59kg, from Preston flag market to Catterick
infantry training centre in North Yorkshire and back,
in memory of his mum Denise, while raising funds for
Blesma, the Limbless Veterans charity.
Young people who access Fulwood Barracks, as relatives
of serving and formerly serving personnel, are being
invited to the game – both to watch and to participate
in our half-time penalty shoot out, which will see the
young people involved taking to the pitch at Deepdale. The
parents of those involved will also be in attendance.
Our existing PNE Forces members are being invited to the
match too, alongside those accessing other Armed Forces
and veterans’ groups in Preston, with more than 50
tickets being distributed.
A number of guests from organisations supporting Armed
Forces personnel are also being hosted for today’s
fixture.
MIDDLEFORTH BUZZING WITH
IVERSEN AND RIIS’ VISIT
Daniel Iversen and Emil Riis’ visit to Middleforth Church of England Primary School earlier this
month left pupils buzzing with excitement.
The Danish pair answered pupils’ questions about
the lifestyle of a professional footballer and what it
takes to make a career in the game.
Middleforth is one of many PNECET partner
primary schools across Preston, benefitting from
delivery of the Premier League Primary Stars
programme.
As part of the Primary Stars programme, PNECET
delivers high-quality, cross-curricular PE
lessons in local primary schools, while inspiring
children through the power and appeal of
Preston North End and football as a whole.
That appeal was evident when Iversen and
Riis visited, with Year 6 teacher Mr Noblett
explaining that there are a number of North End supporting
children in the school.
“We first found out a few weeks ago that they were coming
in and the children couldn’t believe it first of all, we’ve
never had any footballer come to our school.
“They know them and have seen them on the pitch, seen
them in the stadium, but they’ve never seen them in real
life, face-to-face.
“The impact it’s had on the children, some of them go and
watch Preston every week, and they absolutely loved it.
“There’s that many Preston fans in here that now when they
see them, they will say, ‘He came to my school!’ They were
just absolutely buzzing they were here.
“Moving forward, I’m hoping that every time PNECET are
here coaching, the children will remember the time Daniel
and Emil came in and the impact that that had on them.”
Middleforth is in its first year of partnership with PNECET
and Mr Noblett added that children had been benefitting
well from sessions since the new academic year began.
“The children are absolutely loving the coaching sessions
at the minute, and it’s the first year that we’ve implemented
the lessons through PNECET.
“The school are absolutely loving it, the sessions are
fantastic, all the children are really busy and they’re
enjoying them, they all come away with a smile on their
faces.
“The coaches are calm and respectful, the behaviour has
been fantastic, both inside the classroom when they’re
talking about the coaches coming in, and most importantly
outside, they’re absolutely loving the sessions and always
have a smile on their faces, which is all we can ask for.”
Schools Provision Coordinator Jack Mountain added: “We’re
thankful to Daniel Iversen and Emil Riis for joining us at
Middleforth Primary School for our first in-person player
visit at a primary school in 18 months.
“The pupils asked some brilliant questions and we hope that
the two players’ answers and their presence at school can
inspire them to continue to succeed in their PE lessons.”
THE ONE AND ONLY
SWITCH TO 11-A-SIDE
FOR U14S
Our women’s U14s side are facing a new
challenge of playing 11-a-side football for a first
full season this term.
The girls played up an age-group last season, in a delayed
and shortened campaign, with that also seeing them playing
the full-sized game.
It has been an encouraging start to 2021/22 for the girls.
With three wins in their opening five league games, the
team have started in a rich vein of form, playing with plenty
of confidence.
They have also received a first-round bye in the Lancashire
FA County Cup – a competition in which the side reached the
final two seasons ago, while at U12 level, losing out narrowly
at the last stage against Euxton Girls West.
U14s coach Sagwati Malabi – also Schools Provision Officer
with PNECET – has recently returned to coaching the team,
and is confident of a campaign which will provide plenty of
new experiences for the players.
“The girls have been working really hard together and have
enjoyed being been back together after a tough year away
with Covid.
“We played up a year last season so we already have some
experience playing 11-a-side.
“Moving up to 11-a-side means bigger goals and a bigger
pitch, but it’s also beneficial as we can get more of the girls
on the pitch and give them more game time.”
While the 11-a-side game is somewhat familiar for the girls,
moving into a new division has provided new challenges.
Having previously competed in the West Lancashire Girls
League, the girls are now playing in the South Manchester
League and facing a variety of different sides.
Sagwati continued: “Playing new teams, such as Hazel Grove
and Stockport County, gives the girls new challenges, not
only on the pitch but with the extra travel adding to the
experience.
“Facing sides like Stockport County, who have a good first
team playing in the Women’s National League, is a good
experience for the girls and gives them new problems to
solve on the pitch.”
The U14s are playing under what is still a relatively new
set-up of women’s football at PNE.
Ahead of the 2019/20 campaign, PNE Women’s Junior FC
and PNE Ladies joined forces to form as one club, ensuring
a pathway is in place for aspiring younger players to have
the opportunity to progress into the open age game with
Preston North End.
Working alongside Sagwati in the coaching set-up for
the U14s, Alisha Houghton is providing a great example of
those progression opportunities available for the younger
players.
Alisha is also a player for the first team, alongside her
coaching duties with the U14s.
Sagwati continued: “Alisha is a great coach, she is willing
to learn and has progressed from playing in the juniors
herself. She is a great example to the girls to show the
pathways that are available to the first team and to move
into coaching.”
Further highlights for the U14s this term have seen three
of the girls selected to visit the Women’s Regional Talent
Hub, which supports the England Women’s Talent Pathway,
which refers players for potential inclusion in the women’s
national set-up.
WALK AND TALK
FOUNDER CONTINUING
MOVEMBER JOURNEY
The founder of the Walk and Talk For Men
programme in Preston is set to start a 12th year
participating in Movember.
Rob Flood first began taking part in the initiative – which
sees men grow moustaches every November in the name
of testicular cancer, prostate cancer and men’s suicide –
more than a decade ago, and has since become a Movember
community ambassador.
Alongside growing a moustache, men taking part will raise
funds for the Movember Foundation, which supports men
tackling said issues.
Rob, whose own fundraising target is £1,000, explained how
becoming a community ambassador set him on a journey
that saw Walk and Talk For Men come to fruition in Preston,
and subsequently lead to Walk and Talk For Lilywhites –
which is run by PNECET and is for both men and women of
all ages – being formed, too.
“Last year, I set myself a personal challenge to walk 250km
for Movember, and as part of that, I met another community
ambassador, James Mace, from Essex,” Rob said.
“He had set up a Walk and Talk For Men group and I wanted
to do something in Preston that would be more prolonged
so that I could actively be in the community and help men to
get out and come along for a walk, in Avenham and Miller
Park. That’s been quite successful and we have our year
anniversary coming up next year.”
Walk and Talk For Lilywhites was then formed in July of this
year and Rob recently came down to join the walk, and was
pleased to notice the benefits it is providing.
“It was nice being able to get down. It’s a big group. It was
really nice to see the mix of people and see people who don’t
necessarily know each other getting together and sharing
a walk.
“You can come and talk about anything and everything in a
comfortable environment. With it being outside, for those
people who might be isolated, it gets them out of the house
and speaking to other people.
“It was quite refreshing to see people getting together in an
outdoor environment with people they don’t know and being
quite comfortable to do that.”
Rob is hosting an event at the Market Ale House in Leyland
as part of his fundraising activities on Saturday 6th
November from 5.30pm, with live music, a raffle and a
shave down for men taking part in Movember, with all
welcome to join and support the fundraising efforts.
CLUB AGREES DEAL
WITH LEASING OPTIONS
Preston North End is delighted to announce a partnership
with Leasing Options, who as part of the deal, will become the
official sponsor of the Invincibles Pavilion.
The club has signed a multi-year deal with the UK’s leading car
leasing company, as part of Leasing Options’ postponed 30th year
anniversary celebrations.
Leasing Options joins the Lilywhites as a top tier partner and
takes sponsorship of the newest stand at Deepdale. The all-new
branding ‘Sponsored by Leasing Options’ for the Invincibles
Pavilion will be unveiled at the forthcoming Carabao Cup tie
against Liverpool.
As part of the agreement, and Leasing Options ongoing
commitment to grassroots sport, the leasing company will also
become official partner of the Preston North End Community and
Education Trust’s Kicks football programme.
The club’s finance director Kevin Abbott from Preston North
End said: “Everyone at Preston North End is excited to welcome
Leasing Options to the Lilywhites’ fold.
“To have such a well-known, north west based, successful family
business be part of our club is fantastic and we cannot wait to
help the whole Leasing Options team celebrate its well-deserved
30thanniversary.
“The new signage and branding will be in place for the televised
cup game on Wednesday 27th October, as we wanted to kick
start this partnership as soon as possible.
“We pride ourselves on our community grassroots programme,
and to have a company as likeminded and committed to the next
generation, is fantastic for us and makes us even more excited
for the future.”
Mike Thompson, Chief Operating Officer at Leasing Options, said:
“We’re so pleased to finally unveil some of our exciting plans to
celebrate our delayed 30th anniversary - especially announcing
this partnership with Preston North End.
“As a club, Preston North End is a great example of football and
everything the beautiful game stands for. It’s known for being
the home of some of football’s true legends – Sir Tom Finney,
Bill Shankly and Tommy Docherty – to be able to associate with
such a legendary club is fantastic and something we are truly
proud of. To have our name and branding adorning this stand is
a proud moment for our business.
“Leasing Options has been partnering with various sports clubs
over the years, including Lancashire Cricket Club, St Helen’s
Rugby Club and the Lancashire FA grassroots football club of
the year Moss Bank Football Club. This latest partnership further
cements our commitment and passion of supporting grassroots
sport and ultimately investing in the future.”
As part of this partnership, Leasing Options will have its
presence widely across every element of the club including,
inside and outside stadium signage, branding running along the
LED boards surrounding the perimeter of the pitch and features
within the matchday programme.
Supporters can also expect to see Leasing Options feature
across Preston North End social media channels, whilst also
providing different events at selected games in the fan zone with
fun activities for the family.
In addition to the above, Preston North End fans will also be able
to access special deals to lease a vehicle from Leasing Options.
Thompson continued: “For Leasing Options, this is a real
demonstration of our love and pride of being founded, and
still based, within the north west. We can’t wait to build on this
partnership and look forward to sharing the great plans that we
have for the next 12 months.”
THREE of
the BEST
This season, we want supporters to
share with us their favourite three things
about being a PNE fan, whether that be
a favourite goal, kit, player, match or
memory. It’s up to you!
All you need to do to take part is email
media@pne.com with the subject ‘Three Of The
Best’ and include the following information.
Sixty to 90 words about each of your three picks,
explaining why you have chosen them, and also
attach a high-resolution photo of yourself, as well
as your date of birth.
1. DEEPDALE DUCK
When the new kit came out this year my mum took me to the
North End shop to buy it for me. It was such an exciting day
because whilst we were in there, Deepdale Duck was also in the
shop!
I decided I wanted my surname and the number ten to be printed
on the back, and when the lovely shop assistant came out with it,
Deepdale Duck presented it to me. This made the day so special.
2. ON THE BALL
At the West Brom game me and my dad talked about how
amazing it would be to touch the match ball and to be able to
throw it back to one of the players. Then we could not believe our
luck, it was just before half-time and the football got kicked into
the Sir Tom Finney Stand right where we were sat. I managed to
catch the ball and throw it back to the players!
3. CHEESE!
When my dad takes me to a match I always look forward to
a delicious hotdog. It is always tradition that we get one at
half-time of every match we go to. When we got back to our
seats again at the West Brom match, we put our thumbs up to a
photographer walking past. Later on in the day I couldn’t believe
it because my mum saw mine and my dad’s picture in a local
paper. It was so exciting!
