DID YOU
KNOW?
Palmer scored on his City debut back in
January 2019 – a close-range header on
a night where the Robins struck twice
in as many minutes to overcome Bolton
Wanderers 2-1.
Palmer was on loan from Chelsea at the
time but made the move to Ashton Gate
permanent that summer, joining former
Chelsea teammates Tomas Kalas and
Jay Dasilva in the process.
Palmer spent the first half of
2020/21 at Swansea City before
he was recalled in January of this
year, coincidentally going on
to score directly from his own
corner in a 3-1 win against the
Swans in February!
elcome back to
Ashton Gate and
thank you for
your continued
support as we
get ready to host Barnsley on Saturday.
We have worked hard to address our form and of
course we know we have to rectify our results at
home in particular, so that starts again with this
next opportunity.
I would like to send my
best wishes to the two
supporters who required
medical attention at the
West Bromwich Albion
game last weekend. I am
told that they are both
recovering and wish them
well.
Today we extend a warm
welcome to Markus
Schopp, his staff, players
and supporters to BS3.
We know they are a
team struggling to find
form but that’s what
makes them as dangerous an opponent as any. It’s
something we have to be wary of, but at the same
time the focus remains on us and doing everything
we can to be at our best.
That was something we were definitely not against
West Brom. Not only did we lose 3-0 bit it was a
very frustrating performance and one which was far
from acceptable. I was disappointed for the 2,000
City supporters who had made the trip to
The Hawthorns, so I hope you will see
improvements this time around.
WE NEED TO BE
A LOT BETTER
AT HOME...I
HOPE TO SEE A
RESPONSE, FULL
OF POSITIVES,
WHEN WE
CROSS THE
WHITE LINE ON
SATURDAY.
We didn’t give ourselves a chance to build any
success and it’s not enough for us to be passive
in what was always going to be a difficult game.
We knew the tempo would be quick, we expected a
physical team but we simply didn’t show up.
There were too many individuals off their game,
players who had done well in recent fixtures.
When enough people don’t win their own battles
or perform as we’d expect it will always be difficult
and so it showed last
Saturday. I demand a
lot more and I expect a
much improved display
against Barnsley.
Again we need to show
a response and that
comes from starting the
game well and asking
enough questions of our
opponents.
Needless to say we
need to be a lot better at
home. By comparison,
we’ve done well on the
road but any side in any
division is dependent
on home form to give them the potential of a
successful season.
I hope to see a big response, full of positives when
we cross the white line on Saturday.
Thanks for your fantastic support and enjoy the
game.
Cheers
BARNSLEY
DID YOU
KNOW?
There was double reason for Barnsley to celebrate five years
ago as the Tykes went on to win both promotion to the
Championship and lift the Johnstone Paint Trophy at the end
of the 2015/16 season. City achieved the same double-winning
feat a year earlier, albeit as League One champions.
KEY PLAYER
MICHAL
HELIK
In what has been a tough campaign
for the club, Poland international
defender Helik has looked to give
his all.
He leads his club’s Opta ratings with
a score of 7.13 in the Championship,
with three Man of the Match displays
over the course of the season.
The 26-year-old centre-back – who
featured for Poland in their 1-1 draw
against England last month – has
played every minute in both the
Championship and Carabao Cup this
season, averaging more than six
headers per game. He is noted for
his interceptions and positioning,
tackling and aerial duels.
The six-foot, three-inch defender
started his career at Ruch Chorzow
before a move to Cracovia in 2017.
He joined Barnsley in September 2020
where he has made 62 appearances in
all competitions to date.
IT’S BEEN A TROUBLESOME TIME FOR THE
TYKES WITH HEAD COACH MARKUS SCHOPP
SO FAR STRUGGLING TO RECAPTURE THE
FORM OF LAST SEASON’S TOP-SIX TEAM.
Barnsley ended the 2020/21
campaign in fifth place to grab
a play-off spot, though they
were unable to beat Swansea
City over two legs (2-1).
Those exploits meant the
South Yorkshire club headed
into the new campaign in a
confident mood, even though
they saw their Head Coach
Valérien Ismaël leave for
newly-relegated West Bromwich
Albion in the summer.
Under their new man in charge
Schopp, however, Barnsley
have recorded just one win
so far this season – beating
Coventry City at Oakwell on
Matchday Two.
Twelve games later and the
Tykes have not tasted victory
since. In fact, Schopp’s side
head to Ashton Gate on the
back of six straight defeats,
form which sees them sit 23rd
in the Championship – with only
Derby County's points deduction
keeping them off bottom.
Former City loan striker Cauley Woodrow, now Tykes captain, celebrates
scoring during his side's 2-2 draw at Queens Park Rangers
They certainly showed fighting
spirit last time out when they
went close to holding Sheffield
United to a draw. In an actionpacked
second half, the Tykes
went 3-0 down at Bramall Lane
before goals from substitute
Devante Cole and Aaron Leya
Iseka with eight minutes
remaining threatened to spoil
the Blades’ afternoon. The
visitors then hit the post but
their South Yorkshire rivals held
on to inflict another defeat on
Barnsley.
Former Austrian international
Schopp, however, believes
there are brighter times on
the horizon. “There are still a
couple of guys to recover (from
injuries), they are really close,”
he was quoted after the game.
“When we have these players, it
will be a different Barnsley.”
Off the pitch, the club’s home
ground is undergoing remedial
work. The West Stand, which
opened 130 years ago, is closed
as repairs are carried out
following safety concerns.
Friends reunited: Brian Tinnion
welcomes former teammate
WE'VE GOT
MICKY
BELL!
Micky Bell has
joined City
full time as a
Professional
Development Phase coach.
The appointment of Bell, who has
been working part time with the
Robins’ Under-18s and
Under-16s, will further strengthen
the Academy’s coaching
structure.
Bell made 330 appearances for
City between 1997-2005 and is
arguably one of the club’s finest
left-backs. And with managerial
stints at Clevedon Town and
Weston-super-Mare under his
belt, he brings local knowledge
and valuable experience to the
role.
Bristol City Academy Director
Brian Tinnion, whose partnership
with Bell on the pitch was
legendary, said: “Bringing Micky
in full-time to work across the
age groups is a huge boost to the
Academy set-up and the club as
a whole.
"He is very highly regarded and
well known and will really help
the development of our young
players.”
MATCH ROUND-UP
The Under-23s will play Cirencester
Town in the Quarter Final stage of the
Gloucestershire Senior Challenge Cup,
after beating Cinderford Town 4-1.
Seb Palmer Holden scored after just 30 seconds to give
City the advantage at the Causeway Ground but the hosts
were level inside 11 minutes through Harry Emmett.
Thierry Swaby hit the crossbar from 25 yards out but two
goals in as many minutes from Marlee Francois saw City
pull away.
It would be 4-1 before half-time with Palmer Holden
rounding off the scores on the half-hour mark.
In the Professional Development League South, the young
Robins lost their first game of the season to Peterborough
United (4-1) but responded well on the road by beating
Ipswich Town 2-1 and Watford 4-2, in which Ayman
Benarous netted a hat-trick.
Unfortunately the team returned to Ashton Gate where
they lost 2-0 to Queens Park Rangers last time out but
remain second in the PDL South standings.
City’s Under-23s are back in action when they travel to take
on Charlton Athletic on Monday (November 1st, 1pm).
His dad has recently
Sam would go through the
He was brought on in
the final minutes against
Birmingham City and Luton
of 15 games on the City
making his first start for
the club against Stoke City
But a cruel moment
occurred early in that
Bell would leave the field
after just 16 minutes with
a hamstring injury, ruling
him out for the rest of the
“That was my first major
Giving Football Back to
Small Business
At eBay, we know small business and
football clubs used to be like chips and
gravy, two peas in a pod – a match
made in community heaven.
Ironmongers, ship workers, spring
makers and cobblers, all formed clubs
which decades later are still prospering.
But nowadays, you’d think it was all
eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues
and mega sponsors, detached from the
humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support
300,000 small businesses who help
power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be
donating our advertising space to a lot
of these businesses – on match day
hoardings, around grounds and beyond –
throughout the coming season, to ensure
they can continue to thrive in our local
communities. So, join us in giving your
support to Small Business Power, because
today, they need us more than ever.
Football is a game of many opinions, but
there is one that we must all share. There is
no place for discrimination in our game. If
you do not agree, then you are not welcome.
If you see or hear discrimination in this
stadium, please report it to the nearest
