A Time For Thanks

BEING thankful and giving thanks is

a great American tradition. There are

not many countries that actually make

a holiday that is dedicated to just giving

thanks and being gracious. And thank

goodness even with all the craziness

in the USA we are still embracing this

wonderful tradition with our friends

and family. I personally would like to

thank all of our readers and advertisers

for supporting our magazines and

helping us continue our business

since we started way back in 1981.

We are eternally grateful for the

blessings we’ve had over the decades

and the opportunity to serve an

industry we love.

RETAILERS are also most thankful

for this time of year when everyone

heads into full swing for the holiday

season. Many of us who saw slower

sales for a good part of this year are

anxious to recoup as we head into the

home stretch. And, as always, once

we got past Halloween the weeks

will just fly by as we move into our

busiest times.

THIS year is a bit different from

past ones as many products are

experiencing shipping delays,

low stock or higher prices. Astute

retailers saw this happening a couple

of months ago and ordered well in

advance or stocked up earlier than

usual to ensure inventory in their

stores. Between tight inventory

and increased inflation this holiday

season will have its set of challenges.

Planning ahead will have paid off and

retailers would be wise to search out

inventory and new suppliers so that

they do not run out mid-sales season.

AS entrepreneurs it is our nature

to look ahead and forecast as best

we can what the new year will bring.

Each of us has to make plans to help

our businesses grow and prosper. We

should all be thankful that we love in

a society that allows and encourages

free enterprise. And it has never been

more important than today to fight to

keep those freedoms. Our colleagues

in this industry are the most diverse

of backgrounds and ethnicities, all

enjoying the same freedoms. It is

rewarding and gratifying to work

alongside such a fine group of

dedicated and hard-working people.

IN the meantime, we’ve dug our

trenches all year in preparation of

this holiday season. Now is the time

to maximize your profit potential.

Shoppers will be out with money to

spend and our job is to encourage

them to spend it at our businesses.

That means keeping inventory

current, diversified and plentiful. If

you have unsold goods from last year,

mark it down and move it out. Now is

the time to cash in. That goes for both

wholesalers and retailers.

Target Ups Pay $2 Hour For Holiday Peak

TARGET has announced that it will pay an extra $2 an hour to store and service center

employees who work peak days during the holiday season, such as on Saturdays and Sundays

in the final week before Christmas. The retailer previously said that it would scale back holiday

hiring and give more hours to its staff.

THE retailer is among others who are offering higher pay as many retailers are struggling to

fill jobs and focusing on retaining employees ahead of the peak shopping season.

CURRENTLY Target’s minimum wage is $15 an hour.

Claire’s To Go Public

REMEMBER Claire’s Accessories that was in almost every mall around the country and had

a massive following by pre-teens and teens? Well,, after struggling for many years with massive

debt they emerged from bankruptcy but like many other chains with a heavy shopping mall

presence faced declining customer traffic and increased online competition.

months ending Juy 31. As of that time period the company had more than 1500 stores in North

America and 880 in Europe as well as operating in over 10,000 concessions across 25 retail

partners.

KNOWN for its ear piercing service, the company plans to expand into nose piercings which

are currently only in limited stores in the UK, Germany and Canada.

HomeGoods Finally Starts A Website

AFTER opening a record 820 stores, HomeGoods has finally launched a website as the retailer

looks beyond brick-and-mortar at a time of soaring e-commerce demand.

THE discount home decor chain recently started offering items including bedding, kitchen

goods and seasonal items on its website and sees it as a compliment to its physical stores.

THE late launch underscores the reluctance of their parent company TJX to embrace

e-commerce, preferring instead to highlight the “treasure hunt” experience for customers inside

their stores. Marshalls only went online in 2019, while TJ Maxx started their website back in 2013.

TJX had shut many stores during the pandemic and perhaps realized that online shopping

will play a great role in sustainability while many shop online still.

SETTING UP YOUR INVENTORY

The most difficult part of setting up a computerized

system is entering all the products you

sell into that system. Even if you decide to use

bar coding for product ID and price information,

you or an employee must enter a price and

description for every SKU (stock-keeping unit)

in the store, as well as the number of each item

you have on hand. It makes the most sense to

set up this system when you take your first

shipment of products. The person who enters

this information should be one who’ll continue

to work on the system. If you need to hire additional

help, you want this done before opening

day. If you have an employee do the bulk

of this data entry, just make sure you or another

family member learns the computer system

Training should reflect each person’s responsibilities

in the business. If you’re the entire staff,

that’s easy – you’re responsible for everything

and therefore must learn everything. Get out

your trusty notebook and compile a detailed

list of responsibilities related to the long-term

and day-to-day operations of your business.

Next, divide those responsibilities, based on the

number of staffers and their respective

strengths and interests. Compile another list of

any areas where there’s a gap in knowledge.

These should guide you in your self-education

process or serve as the basis for the job descriptions

of any outside help you need to hire.

There will be more on developing job descriptions

and hiring employees later. For now, suffice

it to say that your checklist must provide

you with time to find, interview, and hire any

employees. The target hiring date should be at

least 2 weeks before you’ll need their services.

The want ads should appear in local newspapers

at least 2 weeks before that. Allow time for

interviews too. Remember to coordinate your

hiring plans with any training programs you

want prospective employees to participate.

If your will be a “ma & pa” shop, take the time

now to make sure Ma and Pa know everything

they need to know about running the business.

This may mean extensive self-education using

how-to books, enrolling in a business seminar,

or taking advantage of supplier-sponsored

training programs. Learn all you can before

you open your doors. Study time will prove

more elusive once you’re in business.

You can’t expect to make all your decisions before

you open the door. A large part of retailing

is responding to developments in the market

and fine-tuning the business to address them.

But you should, to the extent possible, draw up

a yearly calendar for your activities.

Everyone wants a fair deal. How you and your

customers define that may be entirely different.

For the customer it may mean the lowest cost;

for the retailer, a reasonable profit on the sale.

In fiercely competitive product categories,

where it’s either sold at a low price or it isn’t

sold at all, you must look for other ways to

sweeten the sale and shore up profits. That may

mean setting up a rack of candy bars near the

cash register, for a low-price, high-markup impulse

sale. No matter what else

you sell, a share of your customers

will respond to the availability

of food at the cash register.

While that will certainly add to profits, it will

be your greater benefit to concentrate on the accessory

and impulse items that go with the

mainstays of your specialty. Many retailers regard

accessories as a key to profitability. In general,

accessory items are not prone to price

competition. They’re usually inexpensive

enough to make it easy for the shopper to make

the purchase, often on impulse. Comparatively

inexpensive though these products may be, the

profits from accessory sales quickly add up for

the dealer. Deciding which accessory and impulse

products to push depends entirely on

your retail specialty. These are definitely products

that shoppers expect to find in the small

specialty store.

When selecting products for your main product

categories, and when reviewing them at trade

shows, think in terms of the total experience of

users of that product. Accessories typically add

to buyers’ enjoyment of a product, allowing

Take your cue from specialty stores that depend

on accessory sales. Consider camera

stores, for instance. When selecting inventory,

the camera store owner thinks in terms of the

total photographic experience. The core business

may be selling cameras, but that’s not

where the profits are. The camera dealer makes

as much, if not more, from the accessories he

carries: bags, lenses, tripods, film, filters, howto

books, picture frames, photo albums, film,

and batteries. The camera dealer tries to stock

everything and anything related to use of that

camera.

That’s what a good specialty store

is: a one-stop shop for everything

related to a particular category,

product, interest or experience. In

achieving that, you can never settle

on a product mix. You need to constantly seek

out the new products that will enhance the enjoyment

and use of the main products you sell.

Experiment. Regardless of the background

you bring to the store, the first year in

business serves as an education in your retail

specialty. Learn from your suppliers and

customers. Test new ideas, services, and

products in your search for the mix that will

distinguish your store from its competitors.

Of course, the strategy you choose must offer

financial rewards. In many retail categories it’s

the other things you sell – the accessories & impulse
