Stylish Affordable Luxury at

FINISHING TOUCHES HOME

Hello, my name is Wendy and

with the help of my husband Rob

together we run our Home Interiors

shop ‘Finishing Touches’ based

in the village of Penkridge,

Staffordshire.

Owning and running a shop had

always been an aspiration of ours

but we never thought it would

come to fruition until an opportunity

came along and we took the risk

of opening a shop in lock down

and we haven’t looked back since!

We launched our business in

October 2020 and were unable to

open due to lockdown restrictions

until December 2nd and then only

for three weeks, but those three

weeks were the most amazing

and rewarding times meeting the

loveliest of people and sharing

their lockdown experiences. The

village of Penkridge really did make

us so very welcome.

Home Interiors have always

been a big passion of mine so

with that in mind we wanted to

create a place where customers

could visit and find Stylish,

Unique ‘Finishing Touches’ for

their homes at affordable prices

but still getting the panache they

were looking to create.

It gets better - from November

onwards our shop becomes a little

obsessed with Christmas (I love

Christmas) and we stock everything

from Baubles, Garlands and

Wreathes to the most beautiful

homeware gifts, you may even

see the odd Christmas Gonk!

We aim to provide lots of choice

in products, so be sure to come

along and visit us, we really

would love to meet you.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas

and hope the only bubbles we

see are in a glass of champagne!

Christmas Tree Festival

ST MICHAELS CHURCH, PENKRIDGE

THURS 9 TH DEC TO MON 13 TH DEC 2021

With words such as social distancing, zoom meetings,

family bubbles and self isolation dominating our

conversations of late, it is good to know they will soon

be replaced with the positive message of Christmas and

the forthcoming season of goodwill and merriment. With

optimism we look forward to the coming of Jesus into

the world prompting us all to reflect on “the reason for

the season”.

Therefore, it is with great eagerness we announce

St Michaels Christmas Tree Festival set against the

wonderful backdrop of our wonderful 13th century

church, offering everyone a unique Christmas

experience; something deeply missed during last year’s

lockdown.

Our five day festival starts Thursday 9th December,

hosting a record number of community groups and

organisations; all eagerly supporting the festival with

over 60 different Christmas trees, each one reflecting

their unique story via a vast array of different styles and

themes. During the festival we have a Christmas singa-long,

where we indulge in the community singing of

festive favorites ranging from White Christmas to When

Santa got stuck up the Chimney, an evening of mulled

wine and mince pies (at the same time as the Village

Victorian Fayre), a Christmas Songs of Praise, festive

bell ringing, Messy Church Christmas Craft Corner and

the ever popular Salvation Army concert to conclude

our festival.

Throughout the five days there will be various

community groups visiting, either conducting their own

Carol Services or simply taking the opportunity to “soak

up the Christmas atmosphere”; we even have a private

wedding! Saturday morning sees our Café Church offer

a festive coffee morning with a backdrop of Christmas

carols, whilst offering everyone the opportunity to

donate to the Food Bank; possibly more important than

ever during these present times.

All monies raised goes to St Michaels “General

Fund” helping support and maintain our 13th Century

building for future generations to enjoy.

More details of St Michaels Christmas Tree Festival,

including a full list of activities and opening times can

be found on the church website:

www.stmichaelspenkridge.co.uk

and on Facebook

(simply search “Penkridge Parish Church”)

Come and be part of this ongoing and exciting venture

for the community of Penkridge. Whatever your age, it

will certainly be fun! Let the Christmas party begin!

A Spectacular L ight and Sound Show at

LICHFIELD CATHEDRAL

As the nights draw in and winter approaches,

Lichfield Cathedral is preparing to shine out in the

darkness with the return of two popular light and

sound shows, Poppy Fields and The Cathedral

Illuminated.

Poppy Fields, which runs from 6th-13th November will

see the Cathedral filled with sound and light as images

of poppies cascade down the walls and across the floor

and ceiling of the stunning 900 year old building, calling

us to remember all those who have fought so bravely

for our freedom through two world wars, and in in

countless conflicts since. Created by the award-winning

team Luxmuralis, specially composed music has been

created for Poppy Fields by musician and composer,

David Harper. Hear too the voice of the Oscar winning

actor, Eddie Redmayne who recorded poetry for the

show.

Poppy Fields will allow visitors a much-needed

opportunity to reflect not only on past and present

conflicts, but also the global pandemic which continues

to affect us all, as we begin to consider how we might

live differently as a result of all that we have lived

through.

Tickets are sure to sell out quickly, so book now through

the Lichfield Cathedral website. Lichfield Cathedral

has been awarded VisitEngland’s ‘We’re Good to Go’

accreditation for following the Government’s Covid-19

guidelines. The Cathedral is grateful to Friel Homes who

have sponsored this event.

At Lichfield Cathedral we’re turning our thoughts to

Advent and Christmas and the award-winning The

Cathedral Illuminated is back by popular demand. From

16th-22nd December, the Cathedral and The Close will

be filled with sound and light around this year’s theme

of The Manger. Awe-inspiring and fun for all the family,

The Cathedral Illuminated will turn our thoughts to what

lies at the very heart of Christmas, a baby born in a

Bethlehem stable. The Cathedral is grateful to Richard

Winterton Auctioneers for sponsoring this spectacular

event.

The Christmas Tree Festival is also back for another

year, with the opportunity to vote for your favourite

tree. And see the Lichfield Cathedral website for the full

programme of Carol services and concerts throughout

December, including the ever-popular Christingle

Service, and Carols around the Christmas Tree.

Of course, we’ve travelled together through a

challenging year, and for many people this Christmas

will be difficult. On 13th December we’ll be holding a

special candlelit vigil for those who want to escape for a

while to reflect and remember.

CHARITY GOLF DAY

ROTARY CLUB OF CANNOCK

On Tuesday 14th September the Rotary Club of Cannock

hosted a charity golf day at The Chase Golf Club. In

the past this event has been clubs biggest single fund

raising event, however due to Covid restrictions last

year’s event had to be postponed.

This year the Rotary club had a tremendous support

with 21 teams taking part from across the region. The

Rotary Club also received very generous sponsorship

from a number of local companies including Brindley

Honda dealership in Cannock who has supported this

event for the last 4 years with a special prize for nearest

the pin on the challenging 9th hole.

The day concluded with a splendid evening meal and

prize presentations and raffle which rose over £500.

David Marklew from the Rotary club thanked all involved

with the organising the event and assured the guests

that ALL money raised would be used to support those

in need.

This year’s winning team was from Element Hinton

Insurance Brokers closing beating the runner up a

team from Firesafetynet by only two points. Prizes were

awarded to the third team plus prizes for players with

longest drive and nearest the pin.

This Golf day which is now an established event in the

Rotary calendar, this year thanks to the generosity to the

teams who took part and the events many sponsors,

has raised around £5000 which is an amassing amount

given the difficult past year.

The Club plan to use the money from the event to help

those in need the local community plus local charities

who have been effected by the Covid pandemic

The Rotary Club of Cannock is already starting to plan

next year’s event.

If you wish to take part in next year’s event more

information will be available very soon on the Rotary

Club of Cannock website.

If you wish to find out more about the Rotary Club of

Cannock, please visit the club’s web site at:

is Soroptimist International of Great Britain & Ireland

(SIGBI); their region (Midland Chase) and their club.

They also asked that the clubs make wishes as they

light each candle.

Soroptimist International (SI) is celebrating their

Centenary this year and one of the ways they

are honouring this is through a Candle lighting

ceremony.

The voluntary women’s organisation boasts almost

72,000 members in 3,000 clubs in 121 countries

around the world and every club has been asked to

light four candles to light up the world in the name of a

The candle lighting is held over 10 days, beginning on

21st September, the International Day of Peace; this

was the day chosen by SI Cannock & District. The

candles were lit by two of the longer serving members,

Carole Holdcroft and Lilian Hyde and two of the newer

members, Tracey Stokes and Jill Mason. All four of

their wishes had the common goals of peace, safety,

dignity and equality. SI Cannock & District are so proud

to stand with their sisters across the world who share

these wishes!

Autumn & Winter

AT THE MUSEUM OF CANNOCK CHASE

Located on the site of the former Valley Colliery, the

museum is the gateway to Hednesford Hills Nature

Reserve and an ideal starting point for a visit to

Cannock Chase. Our new opening hours from 1st

October to Easter will be Tuesdays to Saturdays,

11am – 4pm. General admission and parking are free.

The museum showcases the local, social and

industrial history of the Cannock Chase area and

hosts a changing exhibition programme throughout

the year. Our last exhibition of the year, ‘Hednesford in

Postcards,’ runs from 25th October to 14th December.

A collection of images taken when communicating

by postcard was the equivalent of sending an email

today and now gives us a snapshot of the life and

times of our predecessors.

In addition to the galleries and exhibitions, there

is a newly installed sculpture trail in the museum

grounds, which celebrates the special wildlife found

on Hednesford Hills.

Our new season of events includes guided walks,

school holiday workshops for children, meet the

author events and adult craft sessions including

corn dolly weaving and crochet and a very special

Christmas family event called Mission: Christmas.

Details of our upcoming events can be found on

our Facebook page or by contacting the museum at

museumofcannockchase@ihlmail.org

or 01543 877666

Everyone at the museum and Inspiring Healthy

Lifestyles is pleased to be restarting events and

our regular activities such as our conversation club

Hidden Gems which explores the museum collections

and local history at their monthly meetings.

September also saw the relaunch of our award

winning education programme which includes

interactive sessions, role play, artefact handling and

demonstrations. Topics cover World War II, Coal

Mining, Toys, Prehistory and Christmas past. It is

lovely to see the children again engaging with history

and bringing the past to life.

The museum is located on:

Valley Road, Hednesford, WS12 1TD

We look forward to welcoming you soon!

Chicken

DHANSAK

This warming curry is perfect for a chilly

autumn evening. It’s a fairly mild dish, but

if you prefer something a little hotter, add

a chopped red or green chilli pepper to the

minced onion mixture.

Serves: 4 | Ready in: 1 Hour 20 Minutes

1 large onion, peeled and roughly chopped

2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed

2 tsp grated fresh root ginger

2 tbsp sunflower oil

2 tbsp mild curry paste (such as Patak’s)

500g skinless chicken fillets

100g red lentils

INGREDIENTS

600ml chicken stock or water

2 large tomatoes, roughly chopped

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Boiled basmati rice and onion and cucumber

relish (see tip), to serve

Fried onions, to garnish

METHOD

1. Place the onion, garlic and ginger in a food

processor or blender and whizz for a few

seconds until finely minced.

2. Heat the oil in a large, deep frying pan

and fry the minced onion mixture for 10

minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened

and golden brown. Stir in the curry paste and

cook for 1 minute.

3. Cut the chicken fillets into large chunks

and add to the frying pan. Cook over a

medium heat until no longer pink. Stir in

the red lentils and stock or water. Cover

and simmer gently, stirring occasionally for

30-35 minutes until the chicken and lentils

are tender.

4. Add the tomatoes and simmer uncovered

for a further 10 minutes until the sauce has

thickened and the tomatoes are soft. Season

to taste with salt and freshly ground black

pepper. Serve with boiled basmati rice and

onion and cucumber relish. Garnish with fried

onions.

The Adventures of Tom, Jack and Joe

NEW CHILDREN’S BOOK FUSES SCI-FI, ADVENTURE

AND MORALISTIC MUSINGS FROM YESTERYEAR

children’s adventure and twists it together with science

fiction, producing a story that is not only unique, but will

gain the approval of parents and teachers everywhere.

Join Tom, Jack and Joe on their adventures as they

camp out in the woods, encountering wild animals and

making new friends, including Harry and Cumbow. Their

adventures bring them into contact with fairies, gypsies

and aliens as well as haunted houses and a cave filled

with gold! There are also mysteries and riddles to be

solved, including the Land of the Lost Children, where a

mysterious mist is capable of stopping time itself, and

a magical island believed to contain a large quantity of

lost diamonds.

David Stone’s ‘The Adventures of Tom, Jack and Joe’

is an enchanting, fast-paced and truly engrossing

children’s storybook following the exploits of Tom,

Jack and Joe as they camp out in the woods and

encounter the most enthralling of things. It’s a

multi-faceted story in which young readers will come

across fairies, aliens, gypsies, a haunted house and

more. Above all, it’s good old-fashioned fun!

As a writer, David Stone is passionate about harking

back to a bygone era of storytelling; one where

traditional action and adventure come first, without a

zombie in sight! It’s a hallmark that rings true on every

page of his new book.

‘The Adventures of Tom, Jack and Joe’ takes traditional

“I really wanted to write something that told the story

of brothers who, while happy at home, preferred

to be outside exploring the world around them,”

explains the author. “They would have the support

and encouragement of their parents and, of course,

encounter plenty of surprises and innocent mischief

along the way. It’s the kind of children’s fiction that we

all champion.”

Continuing, “As they go deeper and deeper into the

woods, their encounters become increasingly different

and puzzling. While they get into some hairy situations,

each one ultimately broadens their horizons and helps

them grow as people. I want young children to embrace

the story, its culture and go out into the world with the

same thirst for discovery.”

‘The Adventures of Tom, Jack and Joe’ is available now

on Amazon.

About the Author:

David Stone has lived in a small town for most of

his life and has had a variety of jobs. Writing books

is something he has wanted to do for a while. This

is his first book, an adventure that will take you

back to your childhood.

CHRISTMAS FANCY DRESS CYCLE

IN AID OF HOUSE OF BREAD HOMELESS CHARITY

Join us on Sunday 28th November, in Penkridge, for

a 40 mile (65km) Christmas fancy-dress cycle ride

in support of the House of Bread charity in Stafford.

Bostin’ Ride, a company based in Brewood, have

been organising cycling events for a number

of years and they donate any surplus food leftover

from their feed stations, to local charities. In

recent times, their nominated charity has been the

House of Bread who not only help the homeless

of Stafford and surrounding areas but also provide

food and assistance to other people and families by

way of food banks and support. Despite generous

donations of food and produce by the local

community and businesses they still need money

to help them ‘keep the lights on’ and so, in 2019,

the Bostin’ Charity Santa Ride was born with all

proceeds from the event being given directly to

House of Bread.

This years road-based fully-signposted route takes

riders from the event HQ in Penkridge across to

Cannock Chase with a chance of seeing some

deer (probably not reindeer though - as we all know

that they will be in training for the big night!) and

through country lanes before heading into Stafford

city centre for some much needed refreshment,

including mince pies and mulled wine, at Cafe

43 (the House of Bread’s own cafe). Afterwards,

riders continue their ride through the Staffordshire

countryside back to the event HQ for tea, coffee,

biscuits and perhaps a drink from the bar while they

rest awhile and let their saddles cool!

So whether you are an old-hand or new to road

cycling - join us and help make a difference to

someone’s life.

All the event details can be found on the Bostin’

Ride website (www.bostinride.com) where you

can also enter online.

Santa suits, fancy-dress, fairy lights, tinsel, etc. are

strongly encouraged to add to the fun of the event -

but don’t forget your helmet!

Join us if you can but also spread the word to family,

friends and fellow cyclists and help us to raise as

much money as we can for this well deserving

charity at Christmas!

Rodbaston College celebrates 100 years!

1921 – 2021

Staffordshire County Farm Institute

Staffordshire was quick off the mark in developing

its own institute and by 1921 Staffordshire County

Farm Institute was thriving, and was described

by a Ministry report as, “a leader in making the

fullest possible use of the resources of education

for the benefit of agriculture and the agricultural

community” and the Institute’s plans were

described as, “a model of what a county scheme

should be”.

The first intake of 25 students, all male, moved

into the hall in their new living quarters and

classes started in 1921 under the guidance of the

first principal, Mr John C Rushton.

How it all began

In 1919, the Rodbaston estate, Penkridge, was

sold from a private owner to South Staffordshire

Council thus changing the role of the hall from

a family residence to an education provider.

During the First World War food shortages had

almost brought the country to its knees and the

Ministry of Agriculture recognised that each

county would need an agricultural institute to

help promote farming and food production.

Rodbaston was chosen as one of the first of

four November institutes formed 2021 in the country.

Get involved

Did you or a family member attend or work at

Rodbaston College in the last 100 years? Do

you have a story to share, or purhaps some old

photographs? We’d love to hear from you! To get

involved email: marketing@southstaffs.ac.uk

Keep up to date

To celebrate 100 years of Rodbaston College,

we have a host of events planned throughout

the year. To keep up to date with what’s on, visit:

Penkridge WI

We are now up and running again after the long hiatus

due to the pandemic. It has been such a pleasure to

meet in person once again and to spend time together

with friends. Whilst continuing to have speakers for most

meetings we are also having regular social gatherings to

give members the chance to mingle.

celebrating Penkridge WI’s 100th birthday with a special

lunch at the Chase Golf Club

We always welcome new members so please do

come and join us first Monday of every month at 7:30

in the Methodist Church Hall.

So far, we have run a quiz and a beetle drive at the

meetings. Both were great fun and relaxing evenings

although our brains were buzzing after the quiz - it

was tough!! We have also enjoyed an entertaining talk

and music from Chris Austin on “Into the Shadows”,

covering his memories of The Shadows – a toe tapping

trip down memory lane.

In addition, once monthly we are gathering for a coffee

in Penkridge and we’ve enjoyed some lovely days out.

The Gardeners World show at the NEC in August was a

great day, providing lots of inspiration, and new plants,

for our gardens – and there was even a good food show

section as well!! In September we were blessed with

sunny weather for a relaxing afternoon tea and canal

cruise with Georgie’s Canal Cruises (pictured)

We are looking forward to November’s meeting where

we will be entertained by the ukulele lady and then to

Hedge your bets

CREATING GARDEN BOUNDARIES

Marking your garden boundary with a hedge rather

than a wall or fence helps to provide more gardening

opportunities, and the living boundary may be a real

boon for wildlife.

Hornbeam: this deciduous tree makes great classic

hedging and in the autumn its leaves turn an attractive

bright yellow. It’s long- lived and once established

makes a good hedge for roosting birds. It’s easy to keep

trimmed and dense, its only downside being few leaves

remain in winter.

Beech: a tough and hardy deciduous tree. Best kept

neatly clipped for a formal look. Although it does shed

its leaves, they turn a wonderful tan-brown towards the

end of autumn and a high percentage remain on the

plants until new leaves appear in springtime.

Native Hedging (including hawthorn, wild rose, guelder

rose, blackthorn): perfect for a more rural look. Native

hedging is often available as a mixed selection of

suitable plants and will make an attractive mixed

deciduous hedge that will provide shelter and nesting

sites for wildlife.

Yew: perfect for more formal hedging. It’s evergreen and

its narrow dark green leaves make a striking backdrop

for plants within the garden. Unlike most other evergreen

hedging, it does respond well to being cut back quite

hard. This is one of the slower-growing hedging plants.

Prunus laurocerasus: also known as the cherry laurel, it’s

a large-leafed evergreen that forms a very good, dense

hedge. The leaves are a light, glossy green, avoiding the

sombre feeling some evergreen hedges can bring.

Thuja plicata: known as the western red cedar, the

variety ‘Atrovirens’ makes a particularly good evergreen

hedge. It grows reasonably rapidly and the foliage

produces a gorgeous pineapple aroma when crushed.

Berberis including B.darwinii: another very dense

and attractive hedge, deciduous, semi-evergreen or

evergreen, depending on which you choose. Berberis

has plenty of spines too so is often used in ‘defensive’

planting.

Euonymus japonica: a great hedging plant with

evergreen leaves, many with attractive variegations

bringing extra colour and interest to the boundary.

Choose a sunny or partly shaded spot, making sure that

the soil does not become too dry in summer.

Plant container-grown hedging plants at nearly any time

of year, avoiding very wet, cold or dry weather.

Plant bare-root hedging in late autumn to late winter or

very early spring.

Prepare the ground by forking in bulky organic matter,

such as garden compost, bagged compost or wellrotted

manure. Most hedging is best planted with each

plant about 45cm (18in) apart along the row. For a

denser hedge plant in two staggered rows, each row

about 30-45cm (12-18in) apart.

Keep the young hedge properly pruned to prevent it

becoming straggly.

DEDICATION OF

NATIONAL MINERS’ MEMORIAL

Chase Arts for Public Spaces [CHAPS] and all

connected with the National Miners’ Memorial were

honoured to be joined at the service of dedication by

Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of

Gloucester on Friday 3rd September.

Those present at the service, which was led by the Rt

Rev’d Dr Michael Ipgrave OBE, Bishop of Lichfield,

found it to be most appropriate, often emotional.

Before unveiling the stone plaque, His Royal Highness

the Duke of Gloucester spoke from the heart about

the work done by all men, women and children who

worked in this country’s coal industry over hundreds

of years and the part they all played in keeping other

industries operating.

Following the unveiling of the plaque the memorial

itself was unveiled by four former miners, together

with the artist and the stonemason.

His Royal Highness read a passage from the Book

of Revelation and Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant

read a very moving poem written originally by Julie

Shires which accurately portrays all aspects of the

life of a miner. Lea Hall Brass Band and choristers

from Wolverhampton and Walsall Orpheus Male Voice

Choirs added greatly to the occasion.

At the end of the service Mike Mellor, President of

CHAPS spoke, thanking everyone for not only being

there on that day but also for giving such wonderful

support over the four years taken to reach this

point. One section resonated with all present: “In the

absence of accurate records it is believed from the

1870s up to the start of the First World War, over a

million people were employed in the United Kingdom

coal mining industry. During that period it is estimated

that one miner was killed at work every six hours – a

truly staggering statistic”.

Following the service, Their Royal Highnesses took

time to speak with as many as possible: artist Andy

DeComyn, Stonemason Mark Walker, members of the

band and choir, those who had donated plaques or

their services as well as members of the public present

on the day. A truly memorable and very special day!

Progress of the project can be followed on the

group’s Facebook page:

www.facebook.com/ChaseArtsForPublicSpaces,

or on twitter @miners_memorial

An Audience with the Queen

STAFFORD PLAYERS ARE BACK ON STAGE!

After nearly 2 years, Stafford Players take to the stage

again with “Handbagged” by Moira Buffini from Tuesday

November 2nd to Saturday November 6th at 7.30pm

in the Malcolm Edwards Theatre(MET) at Stafford’s

Gatehouse.

Over a period of 11 years, the two most powerful women

in Britain meet regularly. In this sharply funny and feisty

play, Moira Buffini imagines what might have happened

when Queen Elizabeth II and Prime Minister Margaret

Thatcher were face to face in private. Ronald and Nancy

Reagan, Denis Thatcher and many other political glitterati

provide the supporting cast.

The cast consists of 4 women axnd 2 men. The ladies

provide not one but two Margaret Thatchers and two

versions of the Queen, through the ages. The men take

on the plethora of other roles. Can anyone guess who has

the honour of playing Nancy Reagan? However, neither

want to portray Enoch Powell; notorious for his “Rivers

of Blood” speech!

The cast includes the familiar faces of Keith Minshull,

David Harfield, Clare Watson and Jo Bradley. Gill

Broadbent makes a welcome return after a few years

break. The play sees the Stafford Players’ debut of

young Cara Cox. The production is ably directed by the

experienced Denise Arthur.

This highly entertaining work will make you look afresh at

the people who lead us! Tickets are £12 (Concessions

£11) from the Box Office 01785 616080 or online at
