The Fruits Of Our
Philanthropy
Impact 100 Men of Palm Beach County has made a difference
to students struggling with distance learning during the Covid
crisis. Their 2020 annual grant of $50,000 was awarded to
Roots and Wings, a nonprofit with a program laser focused
on improving the reading skills for 1st through 3rd graders
reading below grade level. Roots and Wings used the $50,000
award to purchase a renowned regime of books from Fountas
and Pinnel. These colorful and creative books capture students’
imagination and promote retentive learning . The original intention
was to supply the books to schools for the Roots and
Wings after-school reading program, Project Uplift. Roots and
Wings executives smartly worked with the educators in each of
the schools to create a distance reading program adapting to
the realities of the Covid crisis. According to some “the Impact
100 Men’s gift was a godsend that will continue to positively
influence our communities after-school programs as well as
learning during the regular school day for thousands of students
over many years to come.”
Boca Helping Hands Expands to Delray Beach
Boca Helping Hands (BHH) is expanding its services in
Delray Beach as part of its plan to help more people
across Palm Beach County over the next three years. This
includes making emergency financial assistance and childcare
funding available to Delray Beach residents, as well as opening
the organization’s first food pantry in West Delray Beach.
Boca Helping Hands expanded its food distribution schedule
to include Delray Beach two days a week. The organization’s decision
to service the west Delray Beach community came from
the area’s lack of hunger relief services. According to the USDA
Economic Research Service, the area south of Atlantic Avenue
on Jog Road is considered to have low access to healthy food
sources, combined with low income and a shortage of nearby
food pantries. As a response to the growing need within this
community, BHH is adding a bi-weekly distribution at Bethel
Evangelical Baptist Church Tuesdays 10:00am–12:00pm and
Thursdays 3:00pm–5:00pm.
Genesis Healthcare Voucher Volunteer - Ashley Amiri
Pantry Bag Program client Patrice Delorantis says the food
helps to supplement her family’s income. “There’s five of us in
the family. It helps us with the food, and if my husband doesn’t
have work, which he usually does, but sometimes he doesn’t
have work.”
In addition, BHH is making financial assistance for rent, utilities,
and childcare expenses available to Delray Beach residents
in crisis through its Resource Center.
Since the inception of the BHH Resource Center in 2003, BHH
has helped over 3,850 families from Boca Raton and Boynton
Beach by distributing almost $1.1 million to help with rent and
utilities.
Boca Helping Hands also provides a Children’s Assistance
Program (CAP), which was started in 2006 out of the need to
help working families pay for safe, reliable childcare to maintain
full-time employment. Since then, BHH has assisted over
Packing PAntry bags in WArehouse - Selma Lelling
850 kids and their families with more than $472,000 to help
cover the cost of daycare, summer camp, and after school care,
enabling parents to continue to work.
To apply for help, documentation must be submitted to
Boca Helping Hands and is reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Requirements and additional information about applying for
financial assistance can be found on the website at bocahelpinghands.org/financialresources.
Information on how to register for the Pantry Bag Program,
hours, and distribution locations can be found on BHH’s website
The Stranger in the
Lifeboat
by Mitch Albom
Released November 2nd
What would happen if we called on God
for help and God actually appeared? In
Mitch Albom’s profound new novel of hope
and faith, a group of shipwrecked passengers
pull a strange man from the sea. He claims to
be “the Lord.” And he says he can only save
them if they all believe in him.
Adrift in a raft after a deadly ship explosion,
nine people struggle for survival at sea.
Three days pass. Short on water, food and
hope, they spot a man floating in the waves.
They pull him in.
“Thank the Lord, we found you,” a passenger
says.
“I am the Lord,” the man whispers.
So begins Mitch Albom’s most beguiling
and inspiring novel yet.
Albom keeps us guessing until the end:
Is this strange and quiet man really who he
claims to be? What actually happened to
cause the explosion? Are the survivors already
in heaven, or are they in hell?
The story is narrated by Benji, one of the
passengers, who recounts the events in a
notebook that is later discovered—a year
later—when the empty life raft washes up on
the island of Montserrat. It falls to the island’s
chief inspector, Jarty LeFleur, a man battling
his own demons, to solve the mystery of what
really happened.
A fast-paced, compelling novel that makes
you ponder your deepest beliefs, The Stranger
in the Lifeboat suggests that answers to
our prayers may be found where we least
expect them.
picturesque retreat, and starts to realize that
even small towns shelter dangerous secrets.
“One of the greatest crime novelists writing
Never
by Ken Follett
Released November 9th
The new must-read epic from master storyteller
Ken Follett: more than a thriller,
it’s an action-packed, globe-spanning drama
set in the present day.
“A compelling story, and only too realistic.”
—Lawrence H. Summers, former U.S. Treasury
Secretary
“Every catastrophe begins with a little
problem that doesn’t get fixed.” So says Pauline
Green, president of the United States, in
Follett’s nerve-racking drama of international
tension.
A shrinking oasis in the Sahara Desert; a
stolen US Army drone; an uninhabited Japanese
island; and one country’s secret stash of
deadly chemical poisons: all these play roles
in a relentlessly escalating crisis.
Struggling to prevent the outbreak of
world war are a young woman intelligence
officer; a spy working undercover with jihadists;
a brilliant Chinese spymaster; and Pauline
herself, beleaguered by a populist rival
for the next president election.
Never is an extraordinary novel, full of
heroines and villains, false prophets and elite
warriors, jaded politicians and opportunistic
revolutionaries. It brims with cautionary
wisdom for our times, and a delivers a visceral,
heart-pounding read that transports
readers to the brink of the unimaginable.
Scar tissue
Scar tissue you, we all know about it and we all have that one scar story.
“oh man! I was out running with the dog and she crossed over in front
of me, I tripped and fell. I cut up my hands, knees and elbows” We have
heard it thrown around in many ways, post- surgical scar tissue, scar
tissue from cuts and scrapes to falls and burns, but have you ever been
told that you can build scar tissue from bad posture or having under
developed muscles? That’s right, this is true.
Let’s have a quick lesson on this type of scar tissue and thewho,
what, when, where, why, how and most importantly
how to fix it.
Let’s start with some background here. We will use the muscles of
the forearm as reference. These are some of the most used muscles
in the body on a daily basis. They are small and powerful and can
be broken down into two basic compartments, the flexors and extensors.
These sets of muscles are prone to repetitive movements,
typing on a keyboard, driving, writing, etc. Consistently using these
muscles the same way day in and day causes them to shorten, more
on this in a second. These combined 20 muscles each individually
are wrapped in a beautiful layer of fascia. This fascia is connective
tissues that not only holds soft tissue together, but allows for proper
movement and lubrication between individual muscles and muscle
strands and muscle bundles to allow for full function of the muscle.
If the fascia injured or impacted it acts like saran wrap when it gets
bunched up it sticks together making it nearly impossible to iron
out. This starts a cascade of healing. The tissues as they currently
are, in an injured state. Collagen starts to lie down and protect and
repair the tissue. The area now heals improperly.
Think about every time you’ve banged your leg, taken a hit in
football, and been in a car accident. There is injury to the fascia
and now we need to straighten it out. When injured, it does not
allow the muscles to be used to their full capacity, they are now
shortened, which creates more problems. In the forearm problems
we see are injuries like golfers elbow and tennis elbow that stem
from the muscles inability to lengthen fully creating excess strain
on the attachment site creating inflammation and pain this also
pertains to the repetitive motions I mentioned above. Continuously
repeating the same motions, sitting at the same desk sleeping in
the same old bed in poor positions can create the same types of
shortening injuries to the muscle and fascia leading to poor posture
that is painful to correct. Legs that are inflexible and the list goes
on and on.
What is the solution? There are many. The quick answer is be
diverse. Change how you sit at your desk, stand up. Do dynamic
stretching; humans are dynamic creatures not static. Create movement,
create strength. Strength? Yes, Strength, eccentric strengthening
is strengthening the muscles as they lengthen. Some call
these negatives. Most importantly, find providers whom do soft
tissue work myofascial release, Fascial Distortion Model, Cupping,
Graston (IASTM), Shockwave and laser. However, passive therapy
is just step one. The real trick here is passive therapy followed by
active therapy, movement is key!
Six Common Fitness Mistakes
You think you’re working out right and eating well but you’re
having a hard time really seeing substantial results. Maybe
it’s time to take a closer look at your fitness regimen
to assess where you might be going wrong. Here are 6
common mistakes clients make during their fitness journey.
1. Blaming Betty
Quite often I hear “Oh she has amazing genetics,” or “I’ll always be
this way because I have a slow metabolism.” Where sometimes these
statements can be true, most often it’s not the case. There are very
few genetic or common hormone issues that can’t be overcome with
the right help. It may take a little extra work and research on your
part to find a program that works for you. People typically use these
excuses to slack when they’re just not willing to put in the work and
rather “blame” it on something that they see as a legit excuse. With
the right professional guidance, nutrition, determination, and of
course patience it’s possible to overcome genetics and hormone issues
and get the results you are looking for.
2. Lazy Leslie
If you’re not pushing yourself each workout, your results
are going to lack luster. You get out of your
workout what you put into it. If you quit immediately
after that burn sets in, you’re giving up too
early. It’s not necessarily “no pain no gain,” but it
is definitely “no burn no gain!” Don’t be quick to
throw that dumbbell down when the going gets
tough. I always tell clients to visualize their goal
when they are ready to give up and laziness is
NOT an injury! Most of the time our minds quit
before our bodies do. Really push yourself and
you will be pleasantly surprised with the results
that follow.
3. Distracted Diana
If you find yourself gazing out the window
thinking about anything else than your workout,
then it’s time to switch things up and
try a new class or workout program. I’m not
saying your workout should always be tons
of fun, but you should (somewhat) enjoy it or
at the very least LOVE the way you feel when
you’re done. If your workout is totally you, then
it’s time to move on. How can you expect results
out of something you totally dread?
46 | november 2021 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
4. Scared Susie
This is probably no surprise - to create a change you need the right
resistance. There are some trainers and fitness gurus that swear by
lifting pencils, but my professional opinion is the heavier the better
- within safe guidelines of course! Unless you’re taking steroids,
or your diet is in huge surplus of junk food you are not going to look
manly. I have seen hundreds of women transform that prove lifting
heavy produces ah-mazing results!
5. Cardio Carly
While cardio definitely has its time and place, too many people
skip the weights and become cardio crazed. Yes, certain types of cardio
help aid in fat loss, but you will not maximize results with cardio
alone. The best shaped bodies (in my opinion) come from the correct
mix of resistance training with high intensity cardio. The days of long
bouts of boring cardio are over! Thank goodness!
6. Patience Patty
All too often people give up way too early because they
are not exactly where they want to be. Well, guess what
folks - fitness takes time! Whether it takes 3 months or 1
year, that’s ok! Everyone is on their own time frame and
results will come differently for each person. Each
time I came back post-pregnancy I would work for
months and months with little to no change, then
suddenly, the weight would fall off and everything
would come into play. You might be just like me!
So, give it time. One of the hardest parts about fitness
is to keep going when the results are slow.
Usually, clients are just on the verge of seeing
results when they quit. Have patience and just
keep going! It takes months for the average person
to really start seeing serious changes. Be
consistent, patient, and stick with it!
Interviewed and written by Emily Peters | photos by Emily Peters
Andrew
Peters
a.k.a soundbasher
If music is the
soundtrack to
life, then Andrew
Peters’s theme
song can be no
other than Duran
Duran’s Hungry
Like the Wolf.
Attacking his goals with ferocity
and passion, Andrew has helped
bring thousands of individual’s
concert dreams to reality as an audio
engineer. Fulfilling an inner desire for
this sector of the entertainment industry,
his current job title is the only occupation
he ever pursued, never venturing
elsewhere. Known professionally as
Soundbasher, his all-encompassing enthusiasm
for live music led Andrew to
stand on many a stage in front of awaiting
fans.
Starting out young at fifteen, Andrew
began as a street promoter for record
labels in return for free concert tickets.
Attending shows gratis satisfied him for
the time being, however the ambitious
teenager desired more.
“I already had a great love of music,
but realized soon after I began delving
behind the scenes, this world was to become
my livelihood. I wanted to be not
just in front of the stage, but behind it
where I felt the real energy was. I needed
to live in the creativity.”
As the Covid-19 pandemic emerged
COPYRIGHTED
and shut down the world, those who supported themselves
from live music revenue were faced with uncertainty. “The music
industry was placed on hold for years - who could have ever
predicted this? I was about to leave overseas to Japan when
the borders started closing and shows
were getting cancelled.” As Covid restrictions
lift, touring has also restarted.
Sizable crowds are congregating
once more to hear artists pour their
hearts out on stage.
“It’s a double-edged sword. We have
to get back to life, although our way of
living isn’t the safest right now with as
much traveling as is required. I take
full precautions, as do the band members
to stay out of harm’s way. This
means we limit the amount of contact
we have with those outside our immediate
group, and wear masks at all
times. It has to be done so we can get
back to work, and people can enjoy
concerts again.”
Andrew’s innocent visions of luxurious
tour buses and non-stop partying
were quickly dashed when the first job
he had was what the industry calls a
van tour.
“There would be a twelve to fifteen
passenger transport which had a few
of the rows removed. All of the band
and crew members would pile into
that vehicle while the gear was towed
on a hitch behind us. This would also
serve as our sleeping quarters. Thankfully
that was only the first six months
of my career, until I joined the ranks of bus tours.”
Andrew says that there are a few monumental aspects of tour
life that hardly ever get mentioned.
“Something no one focuses on, and I wish I had been mentored
in, is the importance factor of physical and mental health. You’re
not getting much sleep, in addition to lifting heavy equipment
in and out of trailers every show. You may not get to shower for
a few days and have to make due until you can access a hotel.
You’re also away from your family for months at a time which
can be straining emotionally, especially if you have little ones. I
miss my family immensely when I’m away, but thankfully there
is technology like FaceTime that allows me to stay in contact. I
don’t know how people on the road handled the work, home life
balance decades ago. Deep focus and devotion in this career are
key factors, and if you can’t achieve that... it can drive you mad.”
Concert goers aren’t usually conscious of the extensive intricate
details that have been put into a single night’s performance.
I already had
a great love
of music, but
realized soon
after I began
delving behind
the scenes, this
world was to
become my
livelihood.
There are numerous emails between venues and tour managers,
sometimes for months before the artist takes the stage. The
crew must set up all their equipment, and make sure every piece
is in working order by performing multiple sound checks.
“Most people don’t realize we have
been up working already for twelve
hours most days to ensure they have
a great time. Sometimes I have caught
a six a.m. flight to arrive at the destination
city by noon, and get right to
work. Ticket holders usually start to
arrive around seven at night, ready to
be entertained. When the audience is a
crowd of eighty-five thousand people,
as it was during Wacken Open Air in
Germany, that can be a lot of pressure.
Sporting a mohawk, Andrew fits right
in with the alternative metal scene. He
says he may like to branch out to other
genres of music later in his career, but
for now hard rock feels like home.
“I cut my hair into this style just to
try it, and it fit. One day I put the hawk
up and it kind of became my trademark.
I don’t always spike it because
it’s a lot of work to maintain, but I definitely
get recognized more when I do.”
Andrew has worked for a wide range
of talent, including seasoned musicians
to bands in the midst of making
a name for themselves, and has rocked
a wide contrast of music sites. From
small indoor clubs to massive outdoor
festivals, he considers it all of great
value.
“It’s more than becoming a consummate professional of your
craft in this business. You have to gel with the band members,
and that’s not always going to happen. I would tell a newcomer
not to give up if the first, second, or even third band they get
COPYRIGHTED
hired to work for isn’t the right fit. You may also have to work
for free in the beginning, and put in your time to get hands-on
experience and build a resume. Bands like to know that someone
has been on a tour, and won’t quit because of the stresses
endured with road life. Also, and probably most important, invest
in exceptional ear protection and always have at least one
case of energy drinks within your reach at all times.”
***Andrew resides in Delray Beach and is presently working for
the band Queensrÿche, who are currently on a United States tour.
They will make their way through South Florida next year performing
at the Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale. Exact date has
yet to be determined.
Thanksgiving dinner isn’t complete without a piece
of pie for dessert and this year Pie It Forward is once
again making it easier for those in Delray Beach to
pick up a pie – or two – without ever leaving their car.
President and CEO Pamela Calzadilla. “Each pie purchased underwrites a
week of hot, nutritious meals for one of our homebound seniors.”
This year Pie It Forward offers apple, pecan, pumpkin and key lime pies
prepared by chefs from country clubs, restaurants, and resorts throughout
the community. Pies are being pre-sold online between November 1
and November 17 and will be available for pick up from one of three con-
Pies are available for a donation of $30 each, except for key lime pies
which are $35 each. Virtual pies, a $30 donation, are also available and
this year once again Pie It Forward is offering the opportunity to Gift-A-Pie
to someone special.
For the third year in a row, Pie It Forward is teaming up with Duffy’s
Sports Grill and making it possible for those in the south county area
to conveniently drive up to the Delray Beach location, 1750 S. Federal
Highway, and pick up their pre-ordered pies. In addition, the team at
Duffy’s will once again be baking delicious apple pies. Pies can also be
picked up at the Palm Beach County Convention Center and at Roger
Dean Chevrolet Stadium.
“This year we are donating 350 pies, which will help raise funds to feed
seniors in need,” said Geri Emmett, chairwoman of the Duffy’s Foundation
and a member of the Meals on Wheels of the Palm Beaches Board of
Directors. “Pie It Forward is a fantastic cause that brings awareness to the
number of seniors in our communities that need financial assistance, help
getting access to a healthy meal and a daily wellness check.”
Duffy’s is also partnering with the Palm Beach School for Autism to
assemble pie boxes and with local girl scout, who will once again decorate
pies and pie boxes.
“We’re grateful to the close to 25 pie masters from our community who
are donating more than 2,000 pies,” said Meals on Wheels of the Palm
Beaches Special Events Director Maura Nelson. “For the last two years we
offered just a limited number of key lime pies and they sold out quickly.
This year several of our pie masters agreed to provide us with about 400
key lime pies in response to the high demand.”
Geri Emmett – Chairwoman of the Duffy’s FouNDATION
“Pie Masters” baking and donating pies this year include those from Addison
Reserve, Admiral’s Cove, Bear Lakes Country Club, The Beach Club,
Boca Grove, Cakes, Etc., The Colony Hotel, Duffy’s Sports Grill, Eau Palm
Also helping by preparing pie boxes again this year are volunteers from
the United Way of Palm Beach County’s Emerging Leader’s Society.
“Pie It Forward is a fun and meaningful opportunity for our members
to make a difference and help local seniors have enough to eat,” said
Lemore Zausner
Local Zealot
& Real Estate
Connoisseur
BY Lesley Marlo | photos by melissa korman
There is a saying: Busy people get stuff* done. This could easily be Lemore
Zausner’s tagline. She’s not just a successful realtor. She’s an “IT girl” – a
local zealot, Delray devotee, and that familiar face who just seems to be
everywhere at once – at the grand opening of the newest Delray hotel, the
trunk show at Atlantic Avenue’s most popular boutique, charity events to
feed the animals, support our Veterans, and save the arts.
52 | november 2021 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
If it’s happening, and it’s local, Lemore is probably there.
Perhaps it’s her New York roots showing. She likes to be “in the
know” and knows how to be “in” – involved, informed, insightful,
and invaluable, especially when it comes to her clients. A 20+ year
resident of Delray Beach, Lemore still possesses an innate New York
hustle. This dogged drive has served her and her clients well in the
Village By the Sea, while her jovial spirit and can-do attitude have
added value to our community for years.
Clients, Tony and his wife Emma, experienced this firsthand when
working with Lemore. As first-time home buyers, they knew how
daunting the process could be and that finding the right agent would
be integral to bringing their dreams of homeownership to life. They
wanted someone sensitive to their needs, who could walk them
through the process step by step with patience. Fortunately, a referral
to Lemore quickly put their concerns at ease.
“We could not have asked for a better agent. Lemore went above
and beyond, making sure our needs were met. [She] was responsive
to emails, calls, and texts no matter what the time of day.” Her professionalism,
enhanced by her personable approach, sealed the deal for
Tony and Emma. “She is super energetic and sweet,” Tony adds. “All
these factors eased the buying process tenfold.”
COPYRIGHTED
While Tony and Emma only viewed three condos before placing an
offer on their new digs, some buyers search much longer or feel they
need to see everything before they can make their move.
“I work hard to know my clients well,” says Lemore. “Some people
need a lot of handholding, and that’s ok. I’m ok with that, but I also
try to empower them with all the information and insight they need so
they don’t miss an opportunity… especially in this competitive climate.”
Insight is certainly one of the keys that can make or break a buyer’s
– or seller’s – chance at success in this hotter-than-ever South Florida
real estate market. And Lemore credits some of her success to being
dedicated to the “back-end” of the business.
Staying on top of industry trends and tuned into local goings-on
ensures that her clients always receive the most current information,
while her community connections and the comradery that she builds
through networking and supporting other locals keeps her on the leading
edge of available listings, sometimes even before they hit the MLS.
“The business of residential real estate is the business of people. You
need to understand and respect each client’s needs and serve as their
advocate on all fronts,” Lemore shares as she cruises home from showing
property in her street-legal golf cart. The open-air ride is a natural
fit to her breezy, yet pragmatic, style. “I like to show buyers around the
neighborhood this way whenever possible to give them a true taste
of the local lifestyle,” she adds with that signature twinkle in her eye.
A resident of Lake Ida herself, Lemore is undeniably proud to be
a Delray local and to support local businesses and charities countywide.
Some of her favorite activities include shopping the Green Market
on Saturday mornings, dining on the Ave., hitting the beach with
her teenage daughters, and doing good. This includes volunteering
for causes she loves, like the upcoming “Pooches & Presents In the
Park” at Old School Square on November 7, where she will help attendees
get hands-on (and paws-on) while combining her love for
animals and passion for creative arts.
Before her move into real estate, Lemore was an award-winning
professional photographer, shooting for big names like Hublot, Harpers
Bazaar, and Black/White Magazine. With her artistic flare, she helps
buyers envision the potential of each property and helps sellers showcase
their homes at their best – a valuable asset few agents possess.
“Often, my clients become my friends. I offer an authentic relationship
that builds trust and makes clients want to work with me. I love
what I do, and I love connecting people to their future.”
Trust was definitely required when Florida newbies Christian and
Jennifer bought their home from Lemore, sight unseen! “We selected
Lemore for her passion and commitment to find us our dream home.
She was highly communicative and there with the information before
we had the chance to ask!”
They also credit her for finding their home the day it was listed.
“Lemore was really on top of things and went the extra mile when
it came to navigating this market and helping us find our home. We
were very impressed with her dedication, and we knew we had chosen
the right agent to represent us. She treated us like family and
catered to our every need,” the happy couple adds.
Working with out-of-towners is nothing new for Lemore. “I have a
huge sphere of buyers from New York, and being a local, I really know
what’s going on. I have watched the development in Delray Beach for
the past 32 years. Because the market is so hot right now and inventory
is so tight, I have an advantage of being right here in the area for
my clients.”
Along with her local connections, the firm she works for, Engel &
Völkers, is a global real estate company with offices and clients all
over the world–and of course, a local shop right in downtown Delray.
This gives her a broader, truly global reach.
Reach is also why Lemore puts such effort into her marketing, from
her namesake website LEMORE.COM, Facebook and Instagram pages,
and social media hashtags, #livelikealocal and #letsmakeamove,
to her consistent advertising and even a line of branded candles with
her self-created new-home scent.
“In this business, it’s all personal. Your home really is where the
heart is – or should be! I will never lose sight of that.”
Hy Pa - Hy Ma
The Evolution of the
Fashion Solution
By diane feen | photos by melissa korman
Practice might make perfect,
but for Hy Pa - Hy Ma it was
perfection on the first day.
But that was 43 years ago.
A lot has happened in 43 years in Delray Beach. No one
knows it better than Nance Bernet.
Nance, the founder and creator of this Delray Beach clothing
boutique, is one of kind. Bright and charming she remembers the
past, but is not stuck there.
“The store has evolved a lot since we started it. We were one of
the first tenants in the building and when we opened, we sold fruits
and candy. Delray back then was a very laid-back quiet town. Women
wanted caftans and muumuus those days. Comfort was very important
because Delray was a beach town.”
The humble beginnings of Hy Pa - Hy Ma were rooted in novelty.
After starting with fruit and candy they began importing nickknacks
like vases, artwork, and accessories.
But like everything in life, time moves swiftly, and so do businesses
who want to keep up with the times. That’s why Hy Pa - Hy
Ma began selling apparel that catered to the feminine instincts of its
residents. Like its founder the store became a symbol of elegance
and refinement. The colorful Oriental rugs and wood interior mirrored
the sensibility of the clothing and accessories.
And it still does.
Their soft knit tunic tops often have novelty trimming like tie
fronts, subtle shine and chiffon trimming. Even though Delray is
not a laidback bastion of calm, it doesn’t mean that women want to
dress up on a daily basis.
As a matter of fact, since the pandemic casual has become the
rule of fashion law. Pants are now loose and have a forgiving elastic
waistband. Fabrics are soft and comfy with slits or wide fluttering
expanse. Sportswear still reigns supreme, but there are times
when special occasions pop up.
That’s why they also carry sophisticated designer dresses perfect
for weddings and evening affairs. Special occasion dresses at
Hy Pa - Hy Ma come with novelty designer trim and necklines. If
your life borders on the casual side, dresses are still a perfect South
Florida companion.
Their casual dresses are slimming and come in all lengths. You
can find them with tiers, flounces and chiffon trim as well. Dots and
prints make the casual dress a part of tropical paradise lore.
If you like colorful tops and coordinating pants, check out their
pre-holiday season sale rack at half price. For those unique pieces
with color and flair there is a $25 rack with upscale sportswear
that you won’t see anywhere else.
That’s the glory of a store like Hy Pa - Hy Ma. Their clothing and
accessories are handpicked from an assortment of unique designers
by Nance and her team. That means thought and instinct
are the drivers of fashion choices, not statistics. Their colorful
creative sportswear and dresses are one-of-a-kind in the South
Florida fashion terrain.
Now that comfortable clothing is the raison d’être there is a
demand for softer looser fabrics. That is where Hy Pa - Hy Ma
comes into the final finish. They specialize in fabrics and clothing
that are stylish and comfortable.
“We have been here for 43 years and Delray has changed so
much. It’s now a Mecca of activity, which is why we have changed
to meet the needs of our customers. We’re also involved in Fashion
Week and Art & Jazz on the Avenue (by the DDA). We are also
intergenerational and have clothing for all occasions,” adds Nance.
Hy Pa - Hy Ma also has a wonderful collection of accessories.
Their novelty necklaces come in all sizes and styles with colorful
beading and faux gold links. They also have designer inspired
evening bags that coordinate with their novel and neutral clothing.
Check out their black faux snakeskin clutch bag with neutral
wood handle. Other handbags sit comfortably in the center of
fashion activity at this wonderful boutique.
That’s why it’s hard to pass up on these eclectic fashion pieces.
And most shoppers don’t. “With all its history Hy Pa - Hy Ma is
a retail crown jewel. I’m so happy to shop here. This small store
has clothing you won’t find anywhere else. It’s full of gems and
wonderful people,” said Stephanie.
Stephanie is right. Hy Pa - Hy Ma is a retail jewel. They have
palazzo pants in tropical prints, as well as draped side tunics in
tropical and animal inspired prints. If you want to add pizzaz to
your step, check out their pewter vegan leather top with V-neck,
nail-heads and shimmer.
Stores like Hy Pa - Hy Ma are a rarity. They have clothing that
will transport you to your happy place and service that will cater
to your every fashion whim.
And, if you still have an inkling for candy, just open the jar
and indulge.
Dr. John R. Pasqual
The Expert in Oral
and Facial Surgery
By nicol jenkins | photos by melissa korman
When looking for a dental specialist and surgeon who is
trusted and experienced in oral and facial reconstruction,
Dr. John R. Pasqual continues to be a top recommendation.
With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Pasqual specializes
in all surgery of the mouth and facial-complex, from wisdom
teeth, and dental implants to facial trauma and reconstructive
surgery.
Pasqual Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, located in Delray Beach, offers
only the highest quality technology such as laser surgery and
Three-Dimensional Scans for the betterment of their patients.
“The practice focuses on oral surgery and rehabilitation, dental
implants, oral pathology, cancer screenings, facial trauma, and reconstructive
surgery of the mouth and the face,” said Dr. Pasqual.
“We have added laser surgery to our practice in the last year; it
is less traumatic and gentler to the surrounding tissues, less pain
after surgery and less downtime. The goal of providing advanced
technology and procedures is for better healing and decreased discomfort
for our patients,” added Dr. Pasqual.
Dr. Pasqual’s staff is trained in i.v. sedation within their state-ofthe-art
office, which offers private rooms and a relaxing setting for
each patient. They have recently incorporated lasers in the practice
for surgical cases, which is less painful and provides for faster recovery
times. The office is also utilizing Platelet Rich Fibrin to accelerate
the healing of soft and hard tissue.
56 | november 2021 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
“Pasqual Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is different from many dental
or medical clinics; we are a very patient-centric office. We focus on the
patients’ physical as well as emotional wellbeing,” said Dr. Pasqual.
“We understand surgery may be a very stressful time for patients. Our
goal is to meet with patients and their family for a consultation, discuss
their current condition, explain all options as well as risks and
benefits of surgery and ultimately perform our very best for them.”
The center utilizes only the best diagnostic equipment including i-
CAT 3D imaging which produces precise high-definition 3D cat scans
of your entire mouth, face and skull so an accurate treatment plan
may be established. Dr. Pasqual’s office is one of the few centers that
utilize this advanced technology that greatly benefits each patient because
of its accuracy. They also offer a procedure called NightLase,
which is a laser treatment used to decrease the frequency of snoring
at night and improve patient’s airways to sleep better. Other offerings
include Botox and facial fillers, dental implants, wisdom teeth, oral
rehabilitation, and utilizing laser for facial aesthetics to decrease scaring,
wrinkles, and sun spots with minimal downtime and discomfort.
Dr. Pasqual’s experience in the only surgical specialty of dentistry
gives him an edge over many. In fact, oral and maxillofacial surgery
requires years of hospital-based surgical and medical training after
graduation from dental school. John R. Pasqual, D.M.D., P.A. is a boardcertified
oral and maxillofacial surgeon and fellow of the American
Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons as well as fellow of the
American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is a graduate
and graduating class President of the University of Pittsburgh School
of Dental Medicine. Dr. Pasqual received post-graduate training in
surgery as well as anesthesia at Case Western Reserve University, MetroHealth
Medical Center, a level I trauma center located in Cleveland,
Ohio where he served as chief resident.
Dr. Pasqual has many accolades and gives back in other areas of
his life, including being the past President of the Palm Beach County
Dental Association, along with being the Chairman of the Board for
the Bethesda Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, and an active
provider at the Caridad Clinic. Dr. Pasqual also maintains an academic
appointment as a clinical associate professor at the University of
COPYRIGHTED
Florida as well as Temple University. He was inducted into the Pierre
Fauchard Academy, an international honor society for illustrating excellence
in the specialty of patient care. In addition, he is a Delegate to
the FDA and prior committee member on the FDA’s Council for Dental
Education and Licensure. Dr. Pasqual is in support of the Mission
of Mercy through the FDA and working towards Palm Beach County
hosting the event in 2023, to provide health care for underserved individuals
in the community who can’t afford to have dental treatment.
This year, Dr. Pasqual is the President of Atlantic Coast District
Dental Association serving all the dental societies from Okeechobee
to Miami, a Trustee for the Florida Dental Association, and a Delegate
to the ADA (American Dental Association). He is Chairman
of the Bethesda Hospital Council and is on the Board of the Baptist
Health Foundation and Bethesda Hospital East and West. Most recently,
Dr. Pasqual has been promoting and supporting the successful
merger between Baptist Health and the local community hospital
of Bethesda, East and West.
His expertise hasn’t gone unnoticed. His patients come from Boca
Raton, Palm Beach, Jupiter, Miami, and all over the world. Dr. Pasqual
has even treated many celebrities, world-renowned musicians, athletes,
and other high-profile patients.
“I treat several patients that have celebrity-status. However, all my
patients are super-stars to me. It is a true privilege to practice each
and every day. I am humbled that patients that may obtain medical
care anywhere in the world choose my office,” said Dr. Pasqual. “We
continue to grow exponentially every year and continue to expand
and serve everyone in Palm Beach County.”
Whether it’s a dental implant, complete oral rehabilitation, or facial
reconstruction, Dr. Pasqual finds an inner reward in helping his
patients look and feel their best.
Dr. Pasqual’s patients feel the same about him and praise him for
his care.
“Dr. Pasqual and his entire staff are top professionals. My serious
procedure went like a dream. I would like to thank Dr. Pasqual and
Danielle for being so pleasant to work with,” stated a happy client.
One Aveda Salon
Beauty in Action
New Invati Thickening Foam
The Aveda products and protocol is the underlayment of consistency
that creates this perfection. The brand stands for
harmonious kinship with Mother Nature and products that
allow your hair to look and feel its best.
It’s also the perfect backbone for a salon that is revered by clients.
“We are busier more than ever. With the influx of people moving
to Florida we never had a slow- down this summer. We’re looking
forward to an even busier winter season coming up,” said Ariel
Jarvis, Salon Manager at One Aveda Salon.
One thing that One Aveda clients can depend on are new products
that enhance and illuminate their hair. One new
Aveda product line is called Botanical Repair. Known for
the ability to strengthen hair from the inside out, it also
creates hair that is shiny, healthy, tangle-free, and strong.
The Botanical Repair System also strengthens hair when
highlighted or heating tools are used.
One of the most admired (and coveted) trait for men
and women is to have a thick head of hair. Aveda knows
that all too well. That’s why they created a new product
that instantly makes you instantly Hollywood ready.
Called Invati Advanced Thickening Foam, it instantly
plumps each hair strand for thicker, fuller, and more voluminous
hair from roots to ends (for a full day). It also
reduces frizz, detangles, and reinforces fragile, thinning
hair. It’s free of parabens, mineral oil, petrolatum, and
drying alcohols.
If your hair is still too thin for your liking – or not
growing at the rate of a bullet train – there are options
available. One Aveda is offering Hand Tied VoMor Hair
Extensions. You also get to choose the color, volume, or
length that you want. According to Ariel, the hand tied extensions
are easier to maintain than tape in type and are
great for medium to thick hair.
Because of the popularity of hair extensions One Aveda
has been putting tape-in extensions for people with thin
hair for years.
Erin Weiner.
“Sue gave me the most natural looking tape-in hair extensions
with real human hair, and I can’t even feel them. I had lost half of
my hair and I’m thrilled to recognize myself again when I look in
the mirror! Tommy and Sue are fabulous; they both color my hair.
Everyone is excellent! Love this place!”
Erin isn’t the only one smitten with One Aveda’s products and
services. Mike Borton is all in when it comes to having his hair cut
and colored at One Aveda.
“Beth has done a fabulous job of cutting and coloring my
hair since I came to Florida almost two years ago. How wonderful
it is to find someone you can trust! Beth is warm and
friendly, listens well, makes great suggestions and does exactly
what I want. The salon is bright and friendly – I am so
grateful to have found Beth and One Aveda Salon.”
There is another reason that One Aveda has become a Delray
salon of choice. Their hair stylists take advanced courses
and are always learning new techniques, services, and about
new products.
One of those is Lash Extensions by VoMor. The lashes are
lightweight, hold a curl and are thick. Aveda also came up with
an exclusive Nutriplenish Moisturizing System that has super
food nutrients to hydrate and replenish hair. The result is
shiny, healthy, heat protection and detangling of your hair.
Victoria Hample can attest to the perfection and beauty of
One Aveda Salon.
“My stylist Priscilla was extremely friendly and did an
amazing job on my hair. She even took the time to explain a
few products that would work on my hair and tips I could try
myself when styling my hair at home. The Aveda products are
a complete game changer when it comes to leaving my medium
straight/wavy hair soft, smooth, and NO frizz without
weighing it down or feeling greasy. I have finally figured out
how to manage my hair in Florida humidity!”
Now that life has returned to a semi-normal state, it’s busy
at One Aveda Salon. That’s why they’re looking for experienced
hair stylists or recent graduates from cosmetology school.
If you are looking for a holiday gift, Aveda hair products
are perfect. To make your Aveda gift look holiday ready they
teamed up with designer Philip Lim to create beautiful boxes
in a vibrant abstract print.
“We are a team of stylists and assistants whose goal is to
help our clients feel calm, relaxed and beautiful. We love meeting
new guests and hearing about their adventures! Come in
and say hello.”
Carmela Coffee Company
Everyone’s
Happy
Place
By diane feen | photos by melissa korman
Ranier Abreu knew he was
onto something big when he
and partner Rafael Baretta
opened their first gourmet toast
and coffee bar in Parkland, Florida.
The enthusiasm was overwhelming – and the need for residents
to gather over fresh coffee and tea was evident from
their first day in business.
“We opened our first coffee bar in Parkland at a time when people
needed a place to congregate and communicate their shared
sense of grief. We were part of their healing process,” said Abreu.
60 | november 2021 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Part of that healing process was culinary as well. They started
out as a gourmet coffee bar, but many days they were asked repeatedly
for avocado toast.
So that’s what they did. They added avocado toast to their menu
of gourmet coffees and teas with milk for every palette – soy, coconut,
almond milk, and beyond.
As the demand grew so did the menu. They
now offer nine avocado toast dishes, paninis, flatbreads,
salads, delicious desserts, beer, and wine.
The avocado toast dishes are diverse (and enticing)
ranging from Feta Walnut Avocado Toast,
to Burrata and Prosciutto Avocado Toast, Caprese
Avocado Toast and more. The paninis and toast
dishes are equally as alluring. There’s hummus
open-faced toast with brie cheese, sundried tomatoes,
black olives and arugula or a Prosciutto
and Swiss Cheese Croissant with arugula.
The magic ingredient in this relatively new
chain of gourmet coffee bars is that they spread
their retail wings rather quickly. Within months
of opening in Parkland they expanded their retail
footprint to 1,700-square-feet.
They also opened stores in Pompano, East
Boca Raton, West Delray Beach and East Delray.
They’re opening in West Boca in December and
are offering franchise opportunities for future
expansion.
COPYRIGHTED
The reception has been nothing short of spectacular.
“What a TREAT! The Arugula Prosciutto Swiss was so yummy I
almost licked the cutting board it was served on! Their tea selections
are delicious. Carmela is a new little Gem in the Delray Beach
food scene - give it a try!” said Christina.
The reason everyone is drawn to this rustic, yet homey gourmet
coffee haven is that they not only serve food that is dipped in familial
greatness, but they offer something even greater.
“I wanted to connect emotionally with my customers, I realized
that it’s not about what you drink, it’s about how you feel. In Delray
Beach people want a place to go that feels like home where they can
get great food, coffee, or tea,” adds Abreu.
Abreu is right. People can connect with friends over an Arugula
and Organic Chicken Salad or Crispy Bacon and Brie Cheese Panini.
The large tables are perfect for families or friends to gather and
share life’s more salient moments.
The smaller ones are perfect for those who want the solitude and
sweetness of contemplation, or want to use their computers. There
are plugs to gear up your devices, foliage to foster warmth, wood
tables, recessed lighting, and amiability to make it feel like home.
The secret sauce, according to Baretta, is that serving coffee
and toast is their excuse for selling an experience. That experience
is one rooted in happiness and love for their customers and
their culinary prowess.
Their menu is extensive – and includes items rarely found in
gourmet coffee bars. They’re healthy and tasty in the same way
a sunset is to our well-being. For breakfast you can get Avocado
Toast with a poached egg, bacon, and cheddar cheese, or a bagel
with salmon and cream cheese, boiled egg, capers and chives.
The coffee is their native tongue, so to speak. Baretta’s family
is in the coffee business in Venezuela, and their coffee is freshly
harvested in Costa Rica. You can get lattes, cappuccinos, mocha,
espresso, macchiato, cortado, and American coffee. If you want to
hit a sweet spot try add-ons such as marshmallow, whipped cream,
drizzle, syrup flavors, and more.
“A great cup of coffee does not just happen, it requires time, resources,
and dedication. We see the positivity, beauty and community
in this industry. We like to do things well and we enjoy when
we hear people rave about our coffee.”
They sure do.
“I am in love with this coffee shop. You can make your own
avocado toast; the coffee is DELISH! We had such a nice time
drinking coffee, reading and a chess game. The coffee cake and
coconut banana cake are insane! DELISH IS AN UNDERSTATE-
MENT. A must try!!!”
It’s no surprise that this three-year-old coffee company has expanded
rapidly. They’re dedicated to making everyone feel cozy,
comfortable, and welcome with quality drinks and wholesome
gourmet food. It’s just like the cup says, “Camela Coffee Company,
brewing happiness.”
You can also purchase their gourmet coffee beans and make your
own coffee at home.
The Delray ART LeAGue
Now at The Big Apple Shopping
Bazaar in Artistic Reverie
By diane feen | photos by melissa korman
The magic of art is
a civilized societies
connection to greatness.
You don’t have to tell that to the Delray Art League. This nonprofit
collection of local artists has been showing their artwork
for 50 years around Delray Beach.
The good news is that they have settled quite comfortably (and
collectively) in the Big Apple Shopping Bazaar.
And the options are endless.
Their indoor-outdoor Art Show is the place to be on the third
weekend of each month. Called “Art Scape in the City,” it’s an art
show with an eclectic selection of artwork from talented (and
award-winning) artists. Get a taste of the flair and creative wizardry
of Soho at the Big Apple. There’s great art, food trucks and an
exciting New York vibe.
Also available for artists – a permanent space to work and display
your artwork to shoppers and art lovers. Called ‘Little Soho,’
the studio-spaces offer a permanent place to create artwork and
develop a loyal following.
“We are looking for artists who want a place to create art and
then sell it to art collectors and shoppers. This wonderful space –
at low prices – is a terrific opportunity for artists to have a permanent
residence in Delray,” said Ron Rizzi, President of the Delray
Art League.
COPYRIGHTED
The magic that Rizzi is talking about is the new connection The
Big Apple has with art and artists. This vast retail arena is the perfect
place to show, create and kvell over all types of art – paintings,
photography, mix media, accessories, and other artistic venues.
Artists who want to participate in either permanent studio
space, or the indoor-outdoor monthly art shows get their choice
of an indoor 10x10 space or a tent outside (10x10) to display
their artwork at the Big Apple.
The exciting monthly art shows are open to members of the
Delray Art League and non-member artists. The ability to create
and display art in the thriving city of Delray (at the Big Apple) has
never been done before.
That is the reason everyone is thrilled about the exposure for local
art and artists. It’s also a great place to stroll the avenues and
streets that make the eccentricities of New York City come alive.
The League also opened a beautiful Art Gallery at the Big Apple.
It’s the perfect showplace for league members artwork. There are
oil paintings in colorful abstracts or surrealism, clay sculptures,
photography, jewelry, digital prints on canvas, wearable art and
more. This new space is bright, modern, and perfect for holiday gift
shopping. When it comes to buying local, this enclave of artistry is
the perfect place to shop.
The new Big Apple “Artist Colony” studios are perfect for artists
who want to sell or create artwork in the privacy of their own
space. There’s great visual exposure, slat wall mounts (that allows
each artist to showcase their work without nails or screws) and
other displays.
Artist studios are approximately 10x10 and are available for
$500 a month (on the inside) or $600 for a corner unit.
These Art Studios are private, secure, and accessible seven days
a week from 8am to 8pm. “The space is an ideal location, and you
can create your own schedule. This new Soho section is ideal for
local artists to come together and create in a safe, centrally located
setting.”
Rizzi is right. The Big Apple is the perfect place for artists to
showcase their artwork and find an audience who enjoys the eclecticism
and artistic reverie of Delray Beach. There are many different
options available for members of the League (and art lovers)
within the vast space of the Big Apple Shopping Bazaar.
“This is a great retail area, and the space is so impressive for
our shows. We can showcase our art indoors with air-conditioning
and get support from the Big Apple,” said Watercolor Artist
and League member Claudia Hafner.
Award winning artist – and art instructor - Fran Mann Goodman
is also thrilled about this new art enclave. “I teach abstract expressionism
classes for league members online and am excited to share
my wisdom and artwork at the Big Apple,” said the National Association
of Women Artists member.
The League is also partnering with non-profits: Twin Palm for
the Disabled, Palm Beach Habilitation Center and Fuller Center.
They are displaying their artwork and donating a portion of the
proceeds from each show to non-profits.
“Their things are truly amazing! They will make great stocking
stuffers for the holiday season,” said Mann Goodman.
“One of our League traditions is to give a portion of our profits
to fund various art programs for the mentally and physically challenged.
We have given over $120,000 to different organizations in
Palm Beach County,” said Mann Goodman, Art Education Fund.
The Delray Art League is also spreading their artistic wings
outward. They joined the DDA for their Art & Jazz on the Avenue.
This themed Block party is on December 22nd. There will be art,
music, and dancing on the streets with artwork from Delray Art
League members.
Delray Art League president Rizzi knows that artistry and community
go together like paint and an easel. That is why he and other
board members have opened their social spere to welcome new
artists and newcomers to the area.
They recently added “Artist and Coffee Meetups” that celebrate
art, life, and community. “We welcome you and want to hear about
your art. Bring a piece of your favorite artwork for discussion and
display in a relaxed friendly environment.”
The partnership between The Big Apple and the Delray Art
League promises to be an exciting addition for the Leagues talented
(and award-winning) artists. It’s also great for shoppers who relish
this centrally located bastion of retail glory.
The Delray Art League welcomes you into their world of creativity
and community. Join them!
“We lost our home, our furniture and were homeless. We moved into our apartment with nothing but the
clothes we had… When Sweet Dream Makers showed up with beds for our sons and us, I cried because
our kids did not have to sleep on the floor anymore. It made such a huge impact for our family, giving us
hope to know everything will be okay. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
– Local mother
Can you imagine putting your
child to bed each night on a couch,
the floor, or a deflated air mattress?
Children right here in our own neighborhoods are sleeping
in unsafe, unsanitary conditions - and likely feel vulnerable,
frustrated, or distracted at school.
Sweet Dream Makers is a growing nonprofit organization, founded
in 2012 in response to an overwhelming community need to get
children into a bed of their own. The mission delivers new beds,
at no cost, to children and families, including a new mattress, bed
frame, box spring, mattress protector, and bedding of their choice.
From humble beginnings as a grassroots, social action program
at Temple Beth El in Boca Raton, Sweet Dream Makers has expanded
to become a highly sought-after and trusted organization
serving families in Palm Beach County. Founder Suzanne Broad has
built an innovative and efficient program, working alongside 50+
local social service agencies, and has proudly provided thousands
of beds to hundreds of families.
“Many people don’t realize just how many families are sleeping on
the floor or on couches right here in our community,” said Executive
Director Suzanne Broad. “Thousands of children are sharing beds or
mattresses that are much too small for them, let alone for their siblings
all crammed together. It’s heartbreaking.”
Now in their fifth year as a nonprofit, Sweet Dream Makers has
68 | november 2021 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
delivered more than 9,000 beds, including a 51% spike in requests
during the peak of the pandemic. Research points to the benefits
that restful, healthy sleep - which Suzanne reminds us is - impossible
to achieve without having a bed to sleep in - provide for strong
immune systems, emotional stability, and mental health. In addition,
parents and caregivers report that children sleep better, behave
better, get along better with siblings and peers, and improve
their academic habits and performance once they are able to sleep
in a bed of their own. An incredible 87% of children improve their
grades after receiving a bed from Sweet Dream Makers, according
to post-survey data.
Sweet Dream Makers is dedicated to ensuring the basic comfort
and security necessary for each child to reach their full potential,
feeling safe, well-rested, dignified, and beyond.
Together with our partners and supporters, we are working toward
the simple, yet ambitious, goal to improve the lives of our
community’s children, one bed at a time - literally changing lives
overnight.
The Unbelievable
U.S. Virgin Islands!!!
By lisa marie
1,100 miles away lies an American tropical getaway.
The Virgin Islands of the United States, formerly
the Danish West Indies were sold to the U.S. by
Denmark in 1916. They are currently an organized,
unincorporated United States territory in the
Caribbean, therefore requiring no passport to travel.
72 | november 2021 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
The islands consist of three main islands: Saint Croix, Saint
John, and Saint Thomas, along with many other surrounding
smaller islands. Traveling to St. Thomas or St. Croix is
not as expensive as you might think. Spirit Airlines offer direct
flights from Ft. Lauderdale to St. Thomas or American Airlines
from Miami.
With a steady temperature averaging 80 degrees and white
sandy beaches on turquoise blue water, the USVI are a place not
to be missed. Each of the islands is unique. St. Thomas is the most
cosmopolitan of the three, giving the feeling that it’s the largest;
it’s not, St. Croix is, although it is the territorial capital and port
of Charlotte Amalie. St. Thomas offers its visitors a huge array of
attractions from churches, museums, classic island architecture
and shopping. Their ethnic diversity offers diners an array of eating
experiences to bring those taste buds alive. Accommodation
selection is vast too. You can choose from 5 star all-inclusive hotels
like The Ritz-Carlton to colorful and picturesque Bed & Breakfast’s
such as At Home in the Tropics.
Now let us island hop to St John. From Red Hook, St. Thomas it
is a short 15-20 minute ferry ride and from Charlotte Amalie will
take around 45 minutes. If you hired a car while on St. Thomas
you can take one of the car barges traveling from Red Hook to
Cruz Bay, St. John. For more information on ferry times and prices
visit www.vinow.com/stjohn/getting_there/.
St. John is the smallest of the three islands and nearly twothirds
of it is a national park. There you can take a 2- or 3-hour
National Park guided tour to experience this paradise of sub-tropical
forests, hundreds of species of plants, including bay rum trees
and orchids and lots of tropical birds. If a guided tour is not for
you, visit www.stjohnusvi.com for all the information needed to
check out this island on your own. St. John is also renowned as
a ‘reader’s paradise’ with its spectacular secluded beaches, turquoise
waters, colorful coral and tropical fish. Even though this is
the smallest island there is still a vast array of accommodations to
choose from. Luxury resorts, condos, cottages, guest houses and
the world’s leading eco-resorts and campgrounds.
Now we are heading to St. Croix, the largest of the USVI. Unfortunately,
there are no ferries offered to St. Croix from either
St. Thomas or St. John. The best option is to fly from St. Thomas
round trip on www.seaborneairlines.co. The island is only 22.7
miles long and 8 miles at its widest point, but the landscape is
surprisingly diverse. The two main towns are Christiansted, renowned
for its historic yellow buildings, architecture, cobbled
streets and history, and Frederiksted, the smaller of the two. You
could see all that St. Croix has to offer in a day trip or you could
stay a few days and relax on their gorgeous beaches, play a game
of golf, indulge in some glorious water sports or try your luck at
the casino! For further information on the ‘Unbelievable Virgin
Islands’ check out www.vinow.com and gather all the knowledge
you need on where to stay, where to eat and what to do.
Helping Those Who Can’t Help Themselves
Officer Damien Ferraiolo always wanted
to be a police officer. But as is the case
with many people, life got in the way.
After getting an associate degree from Palm Beach State College
he entered the workforce. His first job was as a bank
teller at a local bank, and soon he was moving up the ranks.
He was a personal banker, mortgage lender, and within a few years,
a bank account executive overseeing 21 banks.
His life seemed perfect – until the economy downturn.
It was then that Ferraiolo changed gears and become a barber in
Delray Beach, coincidently across the street from the Delray Police
Department.
With his caring heart he saw the fairy dust in the ether of things.
“I always wanted to be a barber because you can make people look
better, and feel better about themselves.”
Helping people look and feel better seems to be the running thread
throughout Ferraiolo’s life. This drive to serve humanity propelled
him to become a police officer. To make that dream come true he put
himself through the Police Academy at Palm Beach State College. He
passed the physical and was hired by the Delray Police Department
October 5th, 2009.
This was an auspicious day – and one sweetly seared into Ferraiolo’s
lexicon. His title is Community Outreach Officer for the Delray
Police Department, and his mission is to help the less fortunate survive
and thrive.
“Since I was a kid I always thought that being a police officer was a
noble profession. When others run away from danger, we run toward
it. I love to help people.”
That is exactly what Ferraiolo does. He also manages to do it with
grace and compassion, fortitude and finesse.
“If Damien knows someone is trying to change their situation in
life, he will do anything to help them. I have seen him do incredible
things to make sure people have what they need to start a new life.
He has a heart of gold,” said Ezra Krieg, from the Delray Beach Initiative
to End Homelessness.
Ferraiolo and partner Ariana Ciancio (a service population advocate)
patrol the streets looking to help those who are without homes
or down on their luck. They assist with the shower truck in Delray
Beach operated by the Interfaith Committee. Ferraiolo also whips
out his barber tools when necessary. “Sometimes I lend my barbering
skills at the truck to provide haircuts for the homeless. We also
make sure they have fresh underwear, socks and clothing.”
During the pandemic Ferraiolo and his partner worked every
day at the shower truck. Many of the volunteers stayed away
because of the virus. But, officer Ferraiolo dove right into the
epicenter of this corner of cleanliness. He also worked with the
Healthcare District of Palm Beach County to get homeless people
vaccinated and medically treated.
“I always try to help out the less fortunate. It brings us great joy to
see people become successful, whether that means detox programs
or getting them a bicycle to get around.”
One of the by-products of his good deeds during the pandemic was
not what he would have ordered. But he faced it with grit and determination.
“I got Covid and I was pretty sick, but I was better after
eight days.”
Ferraiolo and his partner also go to the Caring Kitchen every day at
lunchtime to do community outreach. Their goal is to get people off
the street and into shelters or housing. “We try to make a big difference
in people’s lives. We get them off the street and move them into
housing so they can become fully functioning members of society. We
help them get jobs, medical treatment, and help in any way we can.”
Those are not empty words. Just ask Jason Lorey, Assistant Director
of The Caring Kitchen. “Damien cares deeply for the homeless
community. He has the highest integrity of almost anyone I know. He
is honest, compassionate and a wonderful person.”
The Delray Beach Police Department must feel the same way. Ferraiolo
was Officer of the Year in 2020 as well Officer of the Month.
He’s been on the Delray Police force for 12 years and is trained in
crisis intervention. One of his roles in the department is being on the
Hostage-Crisis Negotiation Team.
His role in the Hostage Crisis Negotiation Team is to talk to people
who may be barricaded in a home or facility. Those are the times that
Ferraiolo has to rely on his natural attributes that he calls, his gift of
gab and compassion.
“I became a police officer to truly help people. I am a Crisis Intervention
Trained Officer and when people are in crisis situations we
get them the resources they need. My training allows me to handle
these situations.”
Ariana Ciancio, Service Population Advocate on the force with Ferraiolo,
has seen his actions close up. “Damien goes way above and
beyond to assist those in need and it comes from his heart. He is
genuine and caring.”
When not on the job Ferraiolo is the quintessential family man.
He married his college sweetheart Margo and has two sons, 16-yearold
Dante and 12-year-old Vincent. Their weekends are spent in the
name of sports, namely soccer. The family travels to soccer games
and tournaments all over Florida and beyond.
Damien and Margo are also on the move, devoted to their Co-ed
Sports League. Their “pick-up” style sports league alternates between
handball, soccer and ultimate frisbee.
When not watching his sons play soccer (or hitting the ground
for a frisbee) Ferraiolo can be found singing Karaoke. Though he
claims he sings off key, it would be foolish to assume that he doesn’t
give it his all.
The reason is obvious.
“I have a strong work ethic. My father always told me to do the best
job I can, as if every job I do is for the Lord.”
Homemade Food Made to Please You
IL CONTADINO RISTORANTE
Michel Menna is a people
pleaser – in a foodie kind of way.
He dotes on his customers with homemade Italian fare at his
intimate restaurant in Pineapple Grove.
The restaurant, Il Contadino is a place where people
come to celebrate holidays, birthdays or just want to luxuriate in
the pampering and power of a homemade Italian meal.
Menna likes when his patrons call ahead to tell him what foods
they prefer. That way he has time to create the perfect version of
their favorite dishes with élan.
84 | november 2021 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Veal Siciliana
Ken Chiarella came to Il Contadino with his mother Marilyn
(who was celebrating a milestone birthday) and three of his
friends. All are snowbirds and find themselves smitten with the
culinary prowess of Menna.
“Michel puts out food that is second to none. Everything is personalized
and fresh, and the flavors are distinct and amazing. Every
time we come here, he asks us what we want, and then he
prepares it beautifully.”
When Ken’s mom Marilyn asked for lamb chops for her birthday
dinner, Menna didn’t have them. But within an hour they
mysteriously appeared in front of her with all the trimmings. She
beamed with delight as her son looked on with amazement and
accolades fit for a prince.
“I have been to the best restaurants in New York and Italy and
Michel is as good as all of them. I always tell the truth; this place
is amazing.”
Others feel the same way. “Do not walk past this place when you
visit downtown Delray. If you’re a true foodie tell Owner/Chef Michel
you want to try the meatball first and you will be blown away!
Then enjoy dinner and very fine wines! Support your local chef,
there’s no one better!”
Some of the dishes that Ken and his guests (Sam and Judy Maruca)
had are steeped in Italian tradition and prepared artfully and
tastefully. They raved about the artichoke hearts basted in garlic
with a wine sauce, sprinkled with Reggiano cheese. As lovers of
homemade Italian food, the group feasted on Zuppa di Mussels in
a light tomato sauce with clam broth, as well as Cowboy Rib-Eye
COPYRIGHTED
Peperonata with peppers, onions, tomatoes and mushrooms in a
red tomato sauce.
Cooking has been a passion of Menna’s since he was a tot. When
his parents were away, he would go into the kitchen and create
gourmet dishes for them. “My parents would come home and say,
‘who catered this meal.’ I could barely reach the stove, but I loved
cooking, it’s always been my creative outlet.”
His guests can tell. “This pasta made me feel like I was in Italy.
We have been here so many times and it’s always wonderful,” said
Maruca. His wife Judy was all smiles as the spaghetti with anchovies,
garlic, olive oil, and breadcrumbs came to the table.
One of Menna’s finest dishes is his tequila tortellini, prepared
tableside in a flame-lit pan that sparks the tequila to adhere to the
creamy light sauce. Add that to the peas, prosciutto, and Reggiano
cheese, and you have a delicious pasta that hails from the greats.
It seems Michel is always on the prowl for new dishes and new
experiences. After all, he has been in the restaurant business for 40
years. Just recently he tasted potato latkes from another restaurant.
Not impressed he quickly got out his frying pan and tried his hand
at this ethnic dish. What he came up with is a potato latke lover’s
dream. Tasty, crispy, and fresh, they seemed to disappear as quick as
they came to the table. He also added sour cream to the center fold.
For Marilyn’s birthday, Menna cooked up a rack of lamb with
roasted garlic and rosemary. It was a dream dish, she said. And she
ought to know. The Boynton Beach resident cooked delicious authentic
Italian meals for her family for years.
For Michel time does not stop. Though the restaurant business
has been hard hit by the pandemic he continues to experiment in
new ways to please guests. “I will be open for breakfast if people
want me to. I make great omelets with fresh vegetables and other
style egg dishes. People just have to call me.”
Menna is also making fresh pizzas with all the trimmings of the
pizza heritage. There is a difference between pizza and homemade
pizza, and Michel wants to show everyone the difference. Also
new at Il Contadino are fresh paninis and wraps with meats, fresh
cheese, lettuce and tomato.
Other outstanding dishes are Pork Osso Bucco that is braised all
day with tomatoes and vegetables as well Mozzarella En Carrozza.
If you are a fish lover, try the whole Branzini, baked with garlic and
wine, delicately cooked.
If you are celebrating a special occasion Menna will prepare
Cowboy Ribeye Steak Pepperonata
homemade dishes for as many people can fit inside this intimate
space. He also has over a thousand different wines from around the
globe waiting to be opened.
The Chiaprella and Maruca clan had a bottle of Napa Valley Eagle
Eye red wine that was divine. Full-bodied and smooth to the palate,
it was an excellent choice. Whatever your wine preference is,
Menna will make it happen.
That might be another reason people love dining there. “Michael
and his staff take the farm to table concept to new heights. I had
Eggplant Napoleon, wow. A fresh and delicious take on eggplant
rollatini. His presentation of veal cutlet with eggplant gave new life
to an old favorite – it was amazing. Topped it off with cannoli and
cappuccino. Best ever. This place is the real deal,” said Doug.
It’s comments like Doug’s that makes Michel smile. It is also what
makes his passion flame – not only table side – but inside his heart.
TENDER JUICY TURKEY
Thanksgiving is one of my
favorite holidays of the year.
It encompasses for most,
three All American “Fs”: Food,
Football, and Family. Some
Thanksgiving dinners are fancy
and elaborate, with recipes
straight out of Bon Appétit,
while others are more simple
and basic with family recipes
that have been passed down
through generations. This
Thanksgiving I will share some
of my favorite, crowd pleasing,
fool proof, traditional recipes.
1 Bottle of champagne
(or ginger ale, or coke)
*If prepared ahead, marinate the
turkey in the fridge the day before
for even more tender juiciness!
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Line a turkey roster with long sheets
of foil that will be long enough to
wrap the turkey loosely.
2. Stir together the parsley, rosemary,
sage, thyme, lemon pepper
and salt in a small bowl. Rub the
mixture in the cavity of the turkey
and over and under the skin
of the turkey. Stuff the turkey with
the celery, onion, orange, and carrot.
Truss, if desired and place the
turkey in the roasting pan. Pour
the broth and champagne over the
turkey and make sure to get some
champagne in the cavity. Bring the
foil over the top of the turkey and
seal. Keep the foil from touching the
skin of the breast or legs.
3. Bake the turkey for 2 1/2 - 3
hours until juices run clear. Uncover
and continue to bake until skin turns
golden brown (about 30 minutes to
1 hour more). When done, remove
turkey from oven and cover with
aluminum foil - let the turkey rest at
least 15 minutes before carving.
7 Cups of chicken broth ( I use Swanson)
10 Large potatoes peeled and cut into 1 inch pieces
1 Cup of sour cream
1 Stick of butter softened
Salt and Pepper to taste
*Mash potatoes with 1/4 cup of broth,
additional broth slowly until desired consistency.
makes for fluffier potatoes and no lumps!
Do Natural Diets Really Work?
I
want to take the opportunity in our column this month to celebrate
and congratulate all of you that read this column, listen
to our Pet Health Café podcasts on iHeart.com, have visited us
at hundreds of shows and events for over a decade and have helped
your pets and your families lead healthier and longer lives. So many
of you have seen a wide range of health improvements achieved
through sometimes the simplest of lifestyle changes.
The key was changing our pets to a species appropriate clean
diet. We all have heard that you are what you eat, and the marketing
of pet and other processed food gives us an illusion that there
is healthy nutrition in most of these foods. It takes a bit of research
and understanding to begin the process of clean and healthy lifestyles.
We have often observed and heard from many of you is that
upon making the change, in as little as a few days, your pets start
a complete transition usually with increased vitality and energy.
The increase in metabolic calories from real food designed for their
physiology puts their bodies on the road to rebuilding. Their bodies
become sleeker, with the extra fat disappearing and replaced by
better muscle tone. Mobility is increased as the joint pain and stiffness
disappears. The skin and coat look and feel different as well.
The healing process along with the high quality natural nutrients
provides a metabolic reset. The living, healthy body is designed to
heal itself. However, we must supply the tools. Serious health issues
seem to go away. Cancer and tumors are reversed. Diabetes vanishes
as the body heals and is no longer reliant upon medication.
Even small issues such as chronic ear infections, anal gland issues,
allergies and even dental problems improve.
Over decades of research, learning and sharing with all of you,
we have seen dramatic changes in the vitality and longevity with
your pets. Along this path we have discovered that sometimes a
simple herb or botanical can create a significant change in the body.
In nature, animals drink from specific water sources to self medicate
and heal with these botanicals and minerals. Our pets’ unique
and highly developed sense of smell guides them instinctively to
what they need.
We no longer have to rely on costly medications, veterinary visits,
or toxic chemicals which often create side effects and additional
health challenges. Nature provides most of the day to day answers
for keeping health optimal. Our sharing of this information in our
communities has improved the lives and well being of thousands of
pets and their parents as well. We are all part of a solution, even in
the stressful times we have been experiencing recently.
We want to thank our listeners, clients, and friends for challenging
us with your questions, concerns, and challenges that drive us
to seek new understanding and answers that lead us to a healthier
future. This understanding leads us to begin these changes before
disease, suffering and challenges, develop. The health and safety of
your pets has always been and will continue to be our focus here
and is paramount to our future.
Lilly
Leon
Marley
A NO-KILL animal shelter.
Open Tues - Sun
11 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Lilly here, ready to steal your heart. I’m a spayed
Hound mix gal of 5 years, a bit shy at first. I’ve
been through too many changes in my life and
dream of a stable, loving, forever home with
gentle, kind humans. I deserve that, don’t you
think? Come in and say hi and let’s see if we
can be soulmates.
I’m Leon, a senior gentleman of 14 years. Good
dogs my age should be in a cozy home being
pampered and I’m hoping to find my person
who will love me. They are so nice to me here
at TriCounty, but it’s busy and bustling and loud
so I’d prefer a quieter, calmer place to lay my
head….maybe your home and your lap?
HERE I AM! You’ve found me! Let’s begin our life
together today! I’m Marley, a good boy who’s 1
year old, 34 pounds, neutered and up to date on
vaccines (I hear that’s a big deal right now). I’m
just the cutest Labrador mix and I’m so ready to
be yours!
All animals are up-to-date
on vaccinations and
heartworm tested.
Adoption fees $110 and up.
