1970. Which coast it began on
is still an unsettled argument.
New York gays insist that
the first gay pride parade
was held in June 1970 to
commemorate the Stonewall
Riot of 1969.

The opposing argument is that the
first gay protest movement began in
the Silver Lake neighborhood of L.A.
in 1966 after an illicit police raid on a
gay bar called. the Black Cat caused
an uprising. Gay Angelenos insist this
was the beginning of the gay rights
movement two years prior to the
Stonewall Riot. Whichever of these
repressive incidents, of which a number
of similar ones were taking place in
cities across the country, Gay Pride
parades were held in many large cities

Corporal Lopez was a graduate of
La Quinta High School and stationed
with the Marines at Camp Pendleton,
California. He was deployed to
Afghanistan on a non-combat
humanitarian mission to secure Kabul
Airport for the peaceful evacuation of
people from that country. He was killed
on August 26, 2021 in a terrorist attack.
The Pole that is eight foot tall says “May
Peace Prevail on Earth” in English,
Spanish, Hebrew, Arabic and also has a
braille plate. The Peace Pole has been
paid for and has arrived here in the
desert.
The 10 inch by 7 inch bronze plaque has

can protect the
precious desert and
mountains we call
home.
Dear Desert Community,
At Friends of the Desert Mountains, we
make it our mission to safeguard our
surrounding natural resources. We are
proud to share the first annual report
in our 30-year history, which highlights
some of our recent successes. Our
programs, including land acquisition
and conservation, allow us to ensure
sustainability of Coachella Valley’s land
now and for generations to come.
Our Board of Directors and team of six
employees rely on partners, volunteers,
sponsors and donors to make this
important work possible. With your
help, Friends of the Desert Mountains
successfully preserved 17,436 acres of
natural California desert in 2020 – no small
feat considering the challenges posed by
the global COVID-19 emergency. One of
our most important acquisitions was a vital
area near Highway 62 and Mission Creek
Road, which was saved from commercial
and residential development.
Purchasing property allows us to return
the land to its natural state. Our Weed
Warriors program reached an important
milestone, successfully clearing invasive
species from Sheep Canyon after five
years 18 of intense work. Efforts will now turn
to the ongoing protection of this land
from non-native plants. Sheep Canyon
is just one example of many successes
we have had in restoring native habitats
across the region.
Regular upkeep is important, too. In 2020,
we maintained more than 310 miles of
trails, which saw increased use as more
people became active outdoors amid
the pandemic. This includes keeping
paths clear, making repairs, removing
trash and cleaning graffiti.
Our commitment to protection extends
beyond buying and caring for land.
Our staff and volunteers are dedicated
to sharing enjoyment of our natural
resources and educating the public
about how to ensure its long-term
existence. We lead programs around
youth education, guide local hikes,
manage nature centers and host events
throughout the valley. From October 2020
to March 2021, we logged 430 hours of
local bird walks and hikes!
All of these efforts are not possible without
the help of our critical partners, including
tribes and government agencies. We
invite you to join us in protecting the
lands of the Coachella Valley. To learn

in 1970 as the beginning of a backlash
to the repression and persecution of
LGBTQ people around the world.
Today PRIDE recognizes and celebrates
the positive, colorful, and creative
qualities that LGBTQ people contribute
to communities. Palm Springs has
historically been a community where
Queer individuals live and participate
in creating prosperity and integration
of the larger community. November
1 through November 7.2021, Palm
Springs is celebrating its 35th Gay
Pride from the first Pride Palm Springs
in 1986. In a 10 year period with a few
hundred individuals participating in
the early1990s to thousands who were
watching the parade and participating
in the festivities in 2020. Palm Springs
Pride has changed the dates it has
been celebrated over the years from
late spring to early November. Today
it involves businesses and organizations
throughout the Coachella Valley.
Celebrities from local and national
levels participate and the benefits to

the community are in the millions of
dollars.
Although there is still the problem
of acceptance and legitimacy in
the country in general and around
the world, LGBTQ people are being
recognized for their contributions to
all walks of life. Numerous artists of
all artistic endeavors tend to come
from the LGBTQ community and have
been significant contributors to LGBTQ
recognition.
Robert Rauschenberg one of the most
recognized abstract expressionist
artists in the history of abstract art was
also a gay man. His art reflected the
contemporary society of the 50s and
60s .
Collages, assemblage paintings, and
sculptures incorporating everyday
appliances and other objects were
trademarks of his creative work.
Homosexuality was illegal in the 1950s
when his work first became prominent.
Any reference to same-sex relationships
was considered criminal and could
not be reflected in the artwork.
Rauschenberg along with Jasper Johns
another gay artist of the same time
period found ways to incorporate
coded visual messages into their work.
Rauschenberg’s work as shown here
titled “Rebus, 1955” is an 11-foot long
horizontal format collage, assemblage,
which leaves out the horizon line of
the composition, replacing it with a
series of multicolored paint samples
dripping toward the bottom of the

work. Within this assemblage/collage,
is a drawing by Cy Twombly an artist
with who Rauschenberg was having
a relationship with. This was his way of
including a discrete symbol expressing
that he is gay into this work which is now
found in the Museum of Modern Art in
New York City.
Jasper Johns another contemporary
of Rauschenberg and ultimately a
romantic partner was very cautious
and even paranoid of his own art. prior
to meeting Rauschenberg, he would
destroy much of his work thinking
it was somehow not acceptable.
After meeting Rauschenberg Johns
developed an understanding of his
own art and the role it could play in
everyday life. In the decade following
his meeting Rauschenberg his art
started to evolve in a type of Pop art.
Initially, he created representations
of the United States Flag. One of
the most famous of these is of 3
overlapping flags each one receding
into a larger one behind it. This was
painted with encaustic, beeswax mixed
with pigment. It may be considered
similar to a melted crayon. His sexuality
remained closeted however it emerged

subtly in his art. The painting, “Target
with plaster casts” created in 1955 is
an encaustic painting of a target with
small boxes at the top of the painting
containing small plaster casts of body
parts consisting of a hand, a foot,
a penis, and a breast. Some critics
speculate that he was reflecting his
sexuality in the use of the sex-related
casts of body parts in this work. His
work continued to evolve sometimes
mimicking techniques of other artists
but always with a uniquely individual
approach. His interest in the Tantric
rituals of Asian derivation as he was
working with the painterly techniques
of large multi-colored cross-hatching
culminated in two paintings titled “Hairy
Testicles” of which testicles and a penis
shaft are hidden in the cross-hatched
designs exemplifying the erotically
concealed definitions of Tantric. Jasper
Johns is the only studio artist to have
received the Presidential Medal of
Freedom from President Obama in 2011.
In his recognition speech, President
Obama stated, “Jasper Johns pushed
the boundaries of what art could be
and challenged others to test their own
assumptions”.

After publishing the DDG for many
years, we have learned about
successful bar connections. These tips
are surefire to fail miserably, but still, it is
fun having a plan. For many of us, a gay
bar is unique in many ways. For me, it
taught me a new way of life! To mingle
with friends and strangers who have
wildly different views and types yet all
share a common bond. From the owner
to customer
1. KISS Keep it simple stupid. This is
about you, and you must strip yourself
naked with only the desire to see
someone new for an hour, night, or
lifetime.
2. Prepare a favorite quote that sums
up your life, and work it into the
conversation. This quote should be
more of an ice breaker than some deep
dark meaning.
3. Stay present, steady your pace.
Never put too much pressure on
yourself. Even if the lighting does not
strike, you will have fun.
4. Look for your type, but don’t look like
you are doing that. Try making some
new friends. Linger casually but keep
your eye on your prize.
