winners and losers, even if we always 

seem to fit in the formers camp. Including this in 

his editorial, Derek has had a look at the ‘climate 

change’ of the industry on page 10. 

We’ve included a look back the Tow Show 

in this issue, that includes a quick chat with 

Roger Dyson. Congratulations go to him for 

being awarded the LV= Britannia Lifetime 

Achievement Award. It’s not often you can 

surprise Roger, but with the help of his team 

we managed to pull it off this year. There are

the Institute of Vehicle Recovery

Message from RD Avery 

RD Avery would like to thank everyone who attended the convoy, Monday 

11th October, as a tribute to Tom Watson, who lost his life in tragic 

circumstances. 

We would also like to thank those that went out of their way to help and assist 

in this difficult time. Special thanks to Rownhams Services, Bakers Recovery, 

CMG, RS Recovery, Bride Valley, E Collins Services Ltd, ND Services, National

PRDC raise funds 

NEWS 

At the Tow Show this year, the PRDC team; Stan, Margaret and 

Andrew held their own fund raising event on their stand. 

Lucky Bags were made up of PRDC items and sold for a minimum 

of 50p donation to the Tom Watson fund. There was plenty of activity 

on the stand over the two days and were thrilled to announce they 

had raised £300. A fantastic effort by all involved.

Time to 

tackle our 

industry’s climate 

change

My last editorial had the heading ‘an industry like no 

other’, perhaps this rings true in many ways not just the 

camaraderie within its network and its industries Trade 

Show but also within its client expectations. 

We often compare the recovery industry’s call out and 

mileage payment structure against other industries that 

rely on a call out payment before work is undertaken. 

Typically, this is compared against white goods, washing machine or 

dishwasher repairs, however I needed to call on the services of the 

local stair lift repair, no not for me, not yet anyway, no for my mum. 

Stair lift malfunctioned almost at the top of the stairs something 

she cannot be without, so a same day service was required. I was 

advised when I booked the call that their call out had gone up £10 

because of the recent increase in fuel cost, fair enough I thought. 

Same day service guaranteed, no time given and certainly not 

within the hour or an over expectant 40 minutes, who would 

expect such a thing? Good efficient service arrived that afternoon, 

simple repair call-out paid £150, this included the first half hour 

service, not bad for a man in an estate car with a small bag of tools, 

ten of those in a day and early retirement I’m thinking. 

We’ve all said it for years, will it ever change? An industry 

that has to operate on a 24-hour basis, that requires massive 

investment within its infrastructure, from bespoke premises 

with specific planning for both automotive use and 24-hour 

operation. Add some of the most expensive trucks money can buy, 

specialist qualified staff, industry specific compliance and training, 

contractual supplier network, an essential service that works all 

hours of the day and night, in all weathers - wind, rain, frost, snow,

sometimes risking their personal safety working on a motorway 

with cars and trucks speeding past within a metre of their working 

space. Consider it . . . all for a fraction that other industries charge 

for tradesmen in a warm and cozy, low overheads call-out situation. 

Sorry but that just sets the scene, the cost to operate any 

business is going up daily, the cost to operate a recovery business 

or any transport business for that matter has been hit by more 

and more stealth tax. Clean air zones and in particular the London 

ULEZ, PROF, ERRI and LARO have campaigned for an exemption 

or at the very least a sunset period against enforcement action 

within the London ULEZ for the bonafide recovery operator. As an 

industry we have talked about it for years; well all the talk is over, 

the ULEZ opened for business midnight 25th October. 

Will the work providers and clubs see any material effect on their 

operating model, do they now pay a premium for operators whose 

work area is within the 140 square miles, yes 140sq miles of the 

ULEZ or is there a premium paid for operators from outside the 

zone that have to enter to either collect or deliver? After all they will 

either have to pay the daily charge or they will have had to make the 

investment replacing fleet vehicles to meet the Euro 6 standards. 

The big question 

The big question here is, who has paid that massive cost to migrate 

their fleet of trucks to meet Euro 6 standards? If you were an 

operator within the ULEZ it was comply, relocate or close. If you 

are operator outside of the ULEZ then it was complying or don’t 

enter the zone. Leaving the burden of the final mile to the London 

operator, happy with that? 

Some will say London operators already get paid a premium. I’m 

sure if you ask a London operator, they are likely to disagree with 

you. Speaking from experience, as many of you will know, I was a 

London operator many years ago, there was a premium paid for a 

job in London. Some club work, as it was called in those days paid 

up to £10 extra, so what happened to that London subsidy? Eaten 

away in the modern-day contracts, along with the added premium 

for a fix rather than a tow. For those of you that don’t know, that’s 

where the free mile came from. If you repaired it then a premium 

was paid, but no mileage paid. If you couldn’t repair it, then you 

had to recover it and, in those days, it was the first 10 miles free. 

The concept was good, but the good old independent operator 

was taking its first sleepwalk! 

Once upon a time there was a thing called London Waiting. A 

premium paid to businesses and people who worked in London. 

A number of years ago there was separate rates for all London 

recovery work, for some that may still apply, as I know there are 

some who pay the LARO operators guide rates. It’s simple to 

understand as the cost to operate within the boundary of the M25 

is now disproportionate to the rest of the country. I was discussing

the point only yesterday with a London operator, his insurance 

premium had increased by over 30% and that’s with no claims 

within the previous 12 months. Why? Well, it’s a London thing he 

was told, if he moved to Suffolk, for example he could halve his 

premium, what’s that all about? 

Let’s go back to the Euro 6 trucks, if you were to order one 

today, you’d be lucky to see the chassis this time next year that is 

without the body being built. In fact, some truck manufacturers 

have actually closed their order book until next year. The 

production delays being blamed against problems with the supply 

chain. Understandable issue because the world is suffering from 

the effects of COVID with some manufacturers out of stock of 

those small components, electronics being the biggest problem. 

Today some vehicles are being delivered with the electronic 

components missing relying on a delayed delivery of the missing 

components, then hoping they can be fitted at PDI, a bit of a 

disaster waiting to happen, I’m sure. 

Blaming COVID, I think that’s fair, if you have managed to survive 

the past 18 months then I’m sure it’s only been possible because of 

the attitude you had to adopt about your own business. Yes, using 

furlough to your advantage but ultimately restructure in some way, 

a reduction in overheads less staff, fewer drivers, operate with less 

vehicles, reduce your mileage, do away with the ‘free milage’ sorry 

‘inclusive mileage’, even reduce your fleets idle time. Why is that 

so important you might say? Well with the cost of fuel currently the 

highest it’s ever been, burning unnecessary fuel makes no sense. 

Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s budget day has been and gone, there 

are a few wins for business owners, but more will be the negative 

impact of increasing the national minimum wage by 6% from 

£8.91 to £9.50 ph. An increase based on a 45-hour week of some 

£1,380 pa and also the increase in national insurance (NI) paid by 

employers, as class 1 NICs will increase by 1.25% from 13.8% to 

15.05%. equating to an overall £1,500 per member of staff that is 

on minimum wage, that business owners will have to find and from 

where? Just a throw away comment the London living wage is 

£10.85. 

All that’s without the increased wage demands of the rest of 

the staff, with your HGV drivers fighting over the Tesco driving jobs 

nearing £22 per hour or the Amazon delivery driver on £17.00 per 

hour that’s plus a signing on fee of £1,500. No risk to life or limb and 

mostly no unsociable hours. 

Any marginal benefits from business rates relief becomes 

insignificant as the cost of living will soar, I’m sure beyond the 

estimated 4% and the cost to operate your business will increase 

even faster with no cap on your energy bills or the ever-increasing 

cost of fuel and insurance. For some I know it’s too late, in the last 

6 weeks I know of 4 recovery businesses that made the decision to 

close the door and stop trading. 

The Government uses the term ‘levelling up’, generally this is 

about the north-south divide, but not always. A financial levelling 

up or in the budget the levelling up of tax on alcohol being a good 

example. 

Is it not time the recovery industry stopped and 

looked at itself and set to “level up” some of the 

disproportionate operating practices? 

A few examples might be under-valued callout fees, or anything 

expected for free, whether it’s mileage, parking/storage or 

government agencies expecting storage or dedicated space 

to carry out vehicle inspections under the Police and Criminal 

Evidence Act (PACE) for free. Free winching, free use of specialist 

equipment. Don’t forget that also includes the free use of the 

operators extensive IVR training and experience. He or she didn’t 

wake up one morning and know how to use skates and dollies and

winch that car, van or truck back to his wheels, no that’s years 

of specialist experience and knowledge being asked to be given 

for free. 

Not to mention the extortionate managing agent fees 

charged, once more, for government agency work. A practice 

that should be frowned upon, in fact this should be treated with 

the contempt it deserves and should be no different to a PPI 

claim - all that over-charging paid back to the operator, who 

rightfully earned it. 

For the infrastructure surrounding the recovery industry to 

work for everyone, it requires a critical mass, in this case it must 

have a financially viable and industry compliant independent 

network of agents and that’s absolutely fundamental to the 

industry’s success or failure. 

Whether you’re a yellow, orange or green club or an 

independent work provider, insurance based or not and that 

includes the bigger operators who use the network to subcontract 

through, you all need the very same independent 

network as a critical mass. Below that number, whatever that 

might be then everything begins to fail, something must give, 

as they say. Not enough critical mass of compliant independent 

operators! 

Unless there is some ‘levelling up’ some basic change, the 

ever-decreasing network of independent agents will eventually 

fall below that critical level, losing four operators in six weeks is 

a catastrophe and listening to and reading some of the horror 

stories it sounds like that network is probably teetering at that 

critical level today. 

We are approaching probably the harshest winter in years, 

predicted because of climate change, it might not be the 

coldest, but for sure it will be the wettest and we all know any 

extreme weather means the recovery industry is tested to its 

full capacity. 

Does that capacity still exist, or will you be forced outside of 

your network, will you be forced to cut the corners? To pull the 

yellow pages off the bookshelf or hit the Google button where 

you risk finding the non-compliant rogue trader, just to get the 

job done, adding further risk to your business? 

This is an all-industry crisis where we all need to reflect on 

the big picture for the survival of a very special industry. NOW is 

our time to tackle our industry’s climate change!

It was magnificent to see so many people at 

the TIC last month for the Tow Show and we 

were genuinely taken aback by the strength of 

support for the event. 

From everyone here at the Tow Show HQ we 

would like to say a huge thank you to all of the 

visitors, exhibitors, sponsors and delegates who 

gave so much time and energy helping to make this 

year’s show such a success. 

As the last show was taking place we had exhibitors 

re-booking for next year and since time have had 

other existing exhibitors reserving their space already 

for 2022. 

We’ve also taken a good selection of new enquiries 

for next year on the back of the last show which is very 

positive and encouraging moving forward. 

We have received so much great feedback and 

comments about the new features from the 2021 

show in terms of the Business Seminar sponsored 

by National Highways, the Vintage Vehicle Display 

sponsored by LV=Britannia Rescue and the reengagement 

evening event that took place in the 

Ironbridge Suite. Thanks again to all those who 

attended and supported these parts of the overall 

show, and hopefully it provided something a little 

different to what we’ve done before. 

It also gives us great pleasure to announce the dates 

for the next show taking place at the TIC again on 

Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th September 2022.

It’s good to be back! 

A welcome return in September for the Tow Show 

2021, where visitors and exhibitors returned to 

bring the Tow Show back to Telford. 

Aforced break in 2020 meant this was the first time 

the recovery community came together since the 

Tow Show in 2019 and the overwhelming response 

was ‘it’s good to be back’. 

The three indoor halls at Telford were once again taken 

up with the best of the recover industry, with Hall 3 this 

year hosting the Tow Show’s first Vintage Vehicle Exhibition 

sponsored by LV= Britannia Rescue. This proved extremely 

popular with over 15 independently owned vehicles vying 

for the ‘Peoples Choice Award’, eventually won by Andy 

Lambert’s ‘Milly’. 

This year’s show, sponsored by Creative Funding 

Solutions, featured the Boniface All Industry 

Demonstration, which always proves to be one of the most 

popular features of the show. 

A new an improved Business Seminar, sponsored by 

National Highways, started the show on the set-up day and 

featured nine presentations throughout the day including 

special guest speaker Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards. 

The regular Gala Night sadly had to be postponed this 

year, but in its place was an Indian Soiree; an informal 

Indian buffet which guests enjoyed whilst listening to 

various presentations. The biggest award of the evening 

was the LV=Britannia Lifetime Achievement Award, 

presented to Roger Dyson, more details of this can be 

found on page 16. 

This year’s show was a great success and an opportunity 

for friends and colleagues to come together after such a 

long length of time. 

Thanks must go to all the visitors and exhibitors for 

coming back this year and making the show a success

‘Our first time exhibiting at the show & we genuinely enjoyed every minute of it, 

As a business it was a great way to let people know who we are and what services we offer, such as IVR 

approved training courses. 

We took the opportunity to communicate important safety & technical 

advice to visitors including people who are actively working at the roadside as 

well as business owners. 

This included advice surrounding roadside safety, electric vehicles, recovery 

procedures and compliance requirements 

We were really busy and a lot of people appreciated having the chance 

to ask questions and get some free advice & knowledge whilst at the show, 

likewise we enjoyed helping people become more informed, confident and 

safe within the industry. 

The show is a great place to make new contacts, keep up to date with 

industry and equipment developments and catch up with familiar faces all in 

one place. 

We would have been happy to spend another day there, and that would 

have allowed us to speak with people who we missed due to being so busy,

This was our first year exhibiting at the TOW Show. 

We can safely say that we were not disappointed! 

As a show tailored specifically for the recovery 

industry, we found it to be personal and friendly, 

offering us the opportunity to network with new and 

existing recovery sector contacts. 

We spoke to numerous recovery operators who 

were keen to learn more about the new battery testing 

technologies, and how these technologies can be used 

both on the roadside and in workshops to improve 

working efficiencies and ROI. We were pleased to 

advise on bespoke battery maintenance programmes, 

packages, and products. 

Rotronics look forward to attending the event 

next year. In fact, we’ve already started working on 

live workshop case studies to show the how ROBIS, 

our web-based dashboard and reporting system 

that collects battery data from workshops, is helping 

recovery businesses analyse their battery data to 

identify battery failures before they happen. 

Lastly, thank you to the organisers for a superbly 

organised event.

experience. The structure of each day meant that there was

his prize. 

On a business level, we will definitely return next year. 

The contacts made have turned into great 

relationships that we hope to nurture for

The first highlight for us was taking a walk around and seeing all the COMEUP winches in Hall 1. As the UK distributor for these winches, we

Roger Dyson 

Lifetime Achievement Award winner 2021 

At this year’s Tow Show, Roger Dyson became the latest recipient of the 

LV= Britannia Rescue Lifetime Achievement award. 

Roger has been working in the recovery industry since 1969, where as an 

operator he designed and built his own equipment. Over 50 years later his 

name is synonymous with quality and innovation. 

“It’s a real honor to receive this award. It was a very emotional moment for me 

and it’s fair to say I was lost for words when my name was announced.” Roger 

commented. 

“I suspected something was happening with the evening but thought it was 

around Tony rather than myself. I must say the Tow Show team and the guys in the 

office did a good job keeping it from me.” 

In over half a century of product design and development, what is he most proud 

of? “That’s a tough question but if I was pushed I would have to say the Hydraloader 

Slidebed SLA. I’m very proud of how that was designed and brought to market.”

Boniface Light 

City for the 

Tonkin Group 

After speaking to other operators that have their own 

Light City, Simon Tonkin, Tonkin Group decided during his 

trip from Cornwall to the Tow Show at Telford to come 

and have a look at one for himself; he was that impressed he 

bought it. The small and compact design makes the Light City 

the perfect vehicle to operate in multi-story car parks and areas 

with restricted access or maneuverability. Jige are a company 

within the Miller Industries group who produce a wide range of 

equipment including the Light City product which is ideal for 

installation onto Isuzu D Max or Ford Ranger chassis. 

The Jige Light City has a maximum lifting capacity of 1700KG 

retracted and 1200kg at the full hydraulic extension of 500mm. 

The boom is fitted with a Superwinch 3.6 tonne winch with 

20m of cable with all winch and boom functions being operated 

either by the wireless remote control or lever controls 

mounted at the nearside rear corner. As well as an uprated rear 

suspension system the Isuzu has the standard alloys removed 

and are replaced with 18” reinforced alloys. The front bumper is 

replaced with a wrap around steel version which acts as ballast 

as well as a durable push bumper as required. The polyester 

body work is styled to suit the chassis and is light, maximising the 

vehicles payload whilst providing as much storage as possible. 

The Jige product has the option of many useful features 

such as the adjustable light bar mounting which allows the light 

bar to be dropped down to increase headroom in restricted 

areas, levelling rear air suspension, an on-board camera system 

for ease of operation, jump sockets, front and rear strobes, air 

compressor and the road rollers which are conveniently located 

at the rear for quick access.

DN Mobile 

After a number of years in the recovery business Dave Norris, DN 

Mobile Services decided it was finally time to have a brand-new 

truck and for him the only place to go was Boniface Engineering. 

His chassis of choice was the 6T VLA mounted onto a Volvo FL 250 14T 

chassis with rear air suspension which he then enhanced even further 

by fitting a light bar to the roof and lower cab and dura bright wheels. 

Once the equipment was fitted and the truck was then wrapped in his 

newly designed logo by Fleet Livery Services he quite simply ended up 

with “the truck of his dreams”. 

With the VLA’s increased bed capacity from 5T to 6T and the 

additional carrying capacity of a 14t chassis over a 12T chassis, the 

payload of this build was 5320kg providing a future proof investment 

that will easily cope with the ever-increasing weight of cars and vans.

The renowned strength, durability and light weight construction of 

the aluminum bed provides years of hassle-free operation without 

the worry of rust and corrosion. The 2.46 metre bed width can be 

fully utilized as the lashing rings are mounted on the side raves which 

helps when loading those larger or wider vehicles. The VLA comes as 

standard with an 8000lb hydraulic winch with a manual sliding function 

allowing the operator to lock the winch into the required position and 

maintain a straight-line pull. The new winch low pull option means 

vehicles can also be winched onto the 2t second car lift via a pulley 

system enabling the winch rope to be routed down through the bed 

and onto the second car lift, even when a car is already loaded onto 

the bed. 

As standard the VLA product features a fully galvanized subframe 

and tilt frame, two function radio remote control allowing the bed to 

be deployed with the push of a single button. The winch can also be 

operated by the same remote by using a simple change over switch. 

Dave also chose the following options on this build, chassis mounted 

heavy duty wheel skates, 1.6m slimline LED beacons with rear repeater 

lights, LED strobes, two pairs of LED work lights, chassis mounted 

wrecker kit, Dynacycle motorcycle frame and wheel skate bed ramps. 

The bed ramps assist with the loading of vehicles when using the 

wheel skates or dynacycle and also provide assistance when loading 

exceptionally low vehicles or those with accident damage.

Breakdown Doctor 

Afew issues ago, Paul Gregory had a marvelous interview with 

Edmund King, the AA’s CEO. Whilst we had to experience a bit of 

corporate twaddle, the man is so clever at his job that it goes a 

long way to make the AA what it is today. Not forgetting, of course, that 

he had a similar communications role with the RAC. I’m not sure what 

his title was but I remember turning the radio or television on to find 

him forever representing the RAC. Since switching to the AA, of course 

a much bigger platform, he has just gone from strength to strength. At 

the same time the RAC’s communication has disappeared into the long 

grass! 

It is amazing really that when an opinion is required, whether it is 

the parking situation, a general motoring situation, in fact anything to 

do with half a car, he is leading the debate; whether it be mainstream 

television or the Jeremy Vine Show, what we get is the Edmund King 

Show. Exactly how influential he is within the AA, I would never know 

but the organisation during his time has gone from strength to strength 

is so many different ways. It is a far cry from the jolly old members club 

that we knew in the early 90’s. Whether we like it or not, we need to 

accept the fact that the AA is the recovery industry; the RAC are trying 

to copy them, and the truly independent sector is left somewhere over 

the horizon. 

If we were to cut Edmund King in half, we would find that he was 

AA yellow throughout. I detected this when he was asked about the 

rate of remuneration for operators and he went into what I refer to as 

corporate twaddle but, you know what, that’s his job and he is so good 

at it. 

It’s a pity that even dating back to the 60’s and 70’s and right up to 

the present time, there is a love/hate relationship between the AA and 

the independent sector and, while competition is competition, some of 

the agenda from the AA I just do not understand. Firstly, it is common 

business sense that they should pick all the good jobs because we 

would all do that if we were in their position, but then the way they are 

rewarding the operators that do the more difficult jobs referred to as 

‘the two out of ten’. They have more or less paid the same rate that 

would be paid for a wheel change or a flat battery. People should puff 

their chests out and say, ‘we will do all the awkward jobs you can throw 

at us but let’s have a decent rate’; and the AA should take it on the chin 

and at the end of day when the sun has gone down and the dust has 

settled, everyone could settle down and work together. 

Once again, the old chestnut has raised its head of who is going 

to take up our case? It needs a man like Mr King on our side; when I 

say our side, I mean the few hundred operators who are aligned with 

nobody. I find it incredible that we have been pushed between pillar 

and post over the last 25 years. It is almost unbelievable that people 

and groups of people can get together and say they are without 

mandate, representing the industry. I am not going to list them but one 

of the fairly recent one was ERRI. They formed themselves, promising 

to change the world and we are still waiting for the first shovel full of 

soil! I read with great interest Derek Firminger’s blow by blow account 

of the PROF international gathering. It appeared to be a ‘pat on the 

back’ for everyone involved with the independent work providers 

present, not one of them actually agreeing to spend any money, 

(if Derek’s report is true and everyone was very happy) Not once did 

I read about extra remuneration for us lot. It could be we are flogging 

a dead horse, with the present state of the independent recovery 

sector and the AA s shear dominance. Perhaps if we had a man that 

everybody would look up to and could remind operators of their worth. 

There are some very talented and clever people in our industry, 

it’s just a matter of flushing somebody out who can be our voice, one 

person not a group. Remember the old story of the committee who 

set out to improve the horse and finished up with a hippo. Also, it 

appears that these self-appointed groups (or individuals) soon become 

a puppet for the independent work providers and want their legacy 

to be more rules and regulations. It’s often said that operators are 

their own worst enemy, and someone need to get through to them. 

Someone that everybody respects, perhaps a media man and not an 

operator would work better, certainly not having a 24hr operation in 

the background would help with workload. 

Looking back the last person I can remember as a respected 

motivator among other things, was Brian Hagan formerly of National 

Breakdown and Green Flag. Brian was able to be game keeper and 

poacher, maintaining a strong and happy workforce while still severing 

his masters, but he was from a generation that did not have to dish 

out bullshit via the media something Edmond King is good at. Not only 

have we reached a stage where a lot of operators are not only working 

long hours for pennies but are too frightened to speak up, hence the 

‘Secret Operator.’

This new set of impact-quality drivers from Laser Tools (part 

number 8286) is specifically designed for the fixings used 

in disc and drum brakes. The set of five drivers includes 

hex (5mm, 6mm) and Torx® (T30, T40, and T50), which suit the 

most commonly used fixings used in these brake installations. 

These 40mm deep drivers are 3/8” drive and manufactured from 

chrome vanadium alloy steel for strength and black phosphate 

coated for corrosion resistance. 

Then make sure you’re fully prepared for brake system 

servicing with these brake fixing screw master sets from Connect 

Workshop Consumables: set number 34159 includes M10 and M12 

screws (40 pieces) and set 34160 includes M6 and M8 screws 

(80 pieces). With both sets you have the most commonly used 

brake fixings in a variety of sizes, thread pitches and type of driver
