As a writer and editor, I hope you read every word in each issue of Housetrends.
But, with one foot planted firmly in reality, I know it’s often the pictures that
steal the show. With that understanding, our editorial team produces each of
our magazines with a strong visual focus. The launching point for our articles
is always great photography which we back up with human interest stories and
valuable resources.
However, the Idea Book you have in front of you leans even more toward
the “a picture is worth a thousand words,” adage than usual. We produce two
of these types of magazines each year, and the goal for these issues is simple:
Give our readers lots of colorful options when it comes to gathering ideas for
updating their homes.
In this issue, we concentrate a bit on entertaining, with amazing wine rooms
ranging from a space under the stairs to an extravagant underground wine
cellar, along with holiday décor ideas that might just encourage you to show
a splash of personality this season. We also take you inside two area home
shows—featuring a total of 16 fully-decorated homes—to showcase the latest
trends in new home construction and design.
We hope you get lots of great ideas from these pages—after all, that’s what
it’s all about. And just in case you have a bathroom or kitchen remodel in mind,
keep your eye out for our February Idea Book which will have plenty of photos
centered on those two rooms that get a lot of attention in our homes.
In the meantime, we wish you the happiest of holidays.
What the Shows
Showed Us
Design lessons we learned
from area home tours
BY KAREN BRADNER
This fall, the Home Builders Associations (HBA) in Greater Cincinnati and Dayton, both
sponsored Homearama events. Between the two cities, a total of 16 homes were open
to the public and ready to inspire.
In the eastern Cincinnati suburb of Anderson Township, the Cincinnati HBA presented
five luxury homes on private wooded lots. Prices ranged in the neighborhood of
$1.3 to $1.7 million.
In Lebanon, the Dayton HBA sponsored a Lifestyle edition of their show in Union
Village, a master-planned community with a focus on charm, inviting front porches and
a small-town, urban lifestyle. Prices ranged from the lower $300s to the upper $800s.
Here are some of our favorite picks from the Cincinnati show. (Dayton highlights
begin on page 33.) ➻
If these walls could talk
While neutrals, especially beiges, were prominent in most of the homes’ furnishings—sofas, chairs,
primary paint colors and cabinetry—it was the bold pops of color and patterns on the walls—that
really told the story at this year’s show. Wallpapers made an appearance in each of the entries. Some
of the picks were striking, like the mural-size floral that adorned a wall of a guest bedroom in The
Charlotte. And some were subtle, like the grasscloth-style wallpaper that covered the powder room
wall in The Woodford. But all demonstrated a strong ability by the interior designers who made the
selections to envision the end result—usually before the walls were even constructed.
Dark paint colors—in various shades of blue and black—found their way to studies, master bedroom
accent walls, lower-level bars and even a bourbon room.
Tile and stone wrapped up the walls in bathrooms, wet bars and fireplace walls, to sometimes add
color, but always texture and pattern which contributed an inviting layer of depth.
Artwork, the majority of which leaned toward contemporary abstracts—was large and in charge in each
of the homes. Light crisp walls presented the perfect stage for the artists’ colorful imaginations. ➻
Work hard, play hard
Home offices and studies have moved from seldom used spaces in the front of the home, just
off the entry, to dramatic, yet functional spaces suitable for a 9 to 5 shift. Often there is a
space—sometimes shared, sometimes separate—for both homeowners to set up shop from
home. Dark charcoal walls made for a dramatic, albeit masculine office space in The Woodford.
While right next door, in The Charlotte, a slightly more feminine office space was painted—on
the walls and ceiling—in a soft, but deep blue.
While their moms and dads might need to carve out a space to work, now, more than ever,
kids need a place to play inside the safety of their home. Two of the homes—Double Eagle
Ranch, and The Charlotte had surprising, and slightly secret—clubhouse-style spaces that
wrapped under the lower-level staircases. La Bella Vita had a second-floor bonus room set up
for a fun-filled sleepover for four. ➻
Keeping a messy kitchen at bay
This year, as in most every year, the kitchens served as striking
centerpieces in each of the homes. Due to the wide-open
floor plans, where the kitchen’s contents are on full display
to those in the great room, dining room, and often to the
front entry, savvy builders and homeowners are now carving
out room for an oversized pantry that serves as a messy
kitchen of sorts. Often these spaces have a second fridge,
a sink, dishwasher, and microwave. La Bella Vita featured
this type of space which ran the length of the kitchen and
offered plenty of storage space, some of which was accessed
by a rolling ladder.
That’s entertainment
If you want to drink where everybody knows
your name, this year’s homes had just the
place for you. Lower-level entertainment areas
rivaled any neighborhood bar with their trappings.
Elkridge II featured two bar/seating
areas, one a bit more out in the open near
the beer cave with its wall-mounted beer
tap. Another, a little more tucked away, was
a brick-covered, barrel-style vaulted ceiling
space that felt a little more private. A high-tech
golf simulation theater was a major draw for
visitors to Double Eagle Ranch. ➻
Getting out is definitely in
A couple of the homes featured
inviting front porches with room to
gather, but standouts of the show
were the incredible outdoor rooms
that were given a serious amount of
space and attention. All of them were
placed in a prominent position in the
home, and often appeared as a flowing
extension of the interior great
room. For example, in The Woodford,
the beamed vaulted ceiling and chandelier
that grace the interior are
mimicked, almost mirror like, in the
outdoor space that is seen through a
bank of windows. (See page 28)
A few of the outdoor spaces had
soaring cathedral ceilings, most had
fireplaces and televisions. Lowerlevel
outdoor rooms allowed for easy
access to the back yards and inviting
woodlands that lined the back of
each of the properties. And for the
first time in several years, an enticing
inground pool made a presence at
the show in the back yard of La Bella
Vita. ➻
Horsing around
It may have been the show’s proximity
to Anderson Township’s Belterra
Park, but horses seemed to be a
theme that made its presence known
in each of the homes. Just a few
of the many examples: There was
a carved wooden horse at the stair
landing in La Bella Vita, and horses
in a grand painting hanging over the
great room fireplace in Elkridge II,
along with a slightly more abstract
painting of horses near Elkridge II’s
beer cave.
What the Shows
Showed Us
continued
Design lessons we learned from area home tours
While there were definitely similarities in the interior design elements featured
in each of the Dayton and Cincinnati Homeramas, the exterior settings
could not be more different. The Cincinnati show homes all boasted
outdoor rooms that focused on their private, wooded back yards. Dayton’s
show, which was held in Union Village—a “new urban” style development
in Lebanon—was all about the front porches that focused the attention on
interacting with neighbors.
Here are some of our favorite picks from the Lebanon show. (Cincinnati
highlights begin on page 19.) ➻
Speaking with woods
The craft of woodworkers was on display in a big way in Lebanon. Soft-white panels added
and elegant touch to The Dogwood. Beams on the ceiling and a grid on the wall add elegance
to the master bedroom in The Washington. Ceiling beams continue the line up from the
granite fireplace wall in The Cottonwood. In both The Louden and The Villager, thin strips
of wood were applied to the walls and painted rich blue and green respectively, to add a bit
of panache to nook spaces. ➻
Front porch living
Spacious front porches, large enough for a swing and furniture, are absolutely the first thing
to catch your eye in Union Village. This is a community that is built to mingle—out front—
on the porches, sidewalks and streets. All the single-family homes feature inviting front
porches. Some of them run the front width of the home, such as in The Orchard, while others
are wrap around style like The Camden. Many of the homes also featured more side patios,
suitable for outdoor dining or relaxation when a bit more privacy is desired, as seen in The
Louden and The Piedmont. ➻
Cemented in style
Patterned cement tile added a serious
punch to bathrooms, laundry rooms and
mudrooms. In The Louden, the tile took a
contemporary turn with its crisp white and
gray accents. Over in The Villager condominium
it contributed to a bath’s wateryblue
color scheme. And in the laundry/
mudroom in The Orchard it had a bit of a
distressed look that added a taste of age and
character to this brand-new space.
Patterned cement tile found its way to
several of the homes, including, (1) The
Orchard, (2) The Villager and (3)The
Feeding a crowd
Perhaps in response to the fact that many of us
are spending more time dining and entertaining at
home, there was an easy flow between the kitchen
and dining areas that allowed folks in both spaces
to be part of the conversation. With the seating
available at the often oversized islands, as well as
the nearby tables, homeowners could easily have
enough space to entertain a small crowd—or a
large family. The Camden included a table which
comfortably seated eight, and nearby with coordinating
chairs, a spacious island that seated an
additional four. ➻
Talking with animals
In a similar fashion as the Cincinnati show, in which horse artwork was featured
throughout the homes, animals were found in artwork strategically
placed throughout many of the homes in Union Village as well. A horse
painted on a black background added a rich element to The Middlebury, a
friendly racoon hangs out over the sofa in The Villager. Sheeps graze in a
painting that hangs between the front windows in The Camden. ➻
Splashing the walls
Also as seen in the Cincinnati show, bold, expressive wallpapers made
a definite impact as accent walls in Union Village. A subtle paper with
metallic touches creates an accent wall in The Logan Park. Powder
rooms in both The Middlebury and The Orchard felt fresh and current
thanks to a splash of pattern on the walls.
A Great Blend of
Wine Rooms
These caves, cellars, vaults and racks are
custom designed for collectors ➻
BY KAREN BRADNER
housetrends idea book 2021 45

In 1934, a year after prohibition
ended with ratification of the
21st Amendment, Americans
consumed an average of .26
gallons—or 4 glasses—of wine
per year. Today, we drink about
a billion gallons of wine each
year. That translates to about
49 glasses of wine per every
resident of the United States.
The number would be markedly
higher if only those individuals
old enough to legally drink were
factored into the equation.
These statistics, and others
supplied by the California-based
Wine Institute, (wineinstitute.
org) show that wine consumption
has been, for the most
part, growing at a steady pace
for the past 86 years. While
bourbon rooms and craft breweries
are all the rage right now,
it is clear wine is in it for the
long run.
Oenophiles know their love
of the grape is not a passing
fancy and many of them have
carved out a space—be it a cellar,
a cave, a room or a place
under the stairs—to properly
pay tribute to their collection.
Take a look at a few of our
favorites. See more wine space from this home on page 52. Photo by Daniel Feldkamp
ON PREVIOUS PAGE; An Upper Arlington couple wanted a space with a bit of
French inspiration blended with a modern vibe to store their wine collection. A
few steps down from their dining room, through double glass doors, a crystal
halo chandelier shines on the rich wood of the cabinets, the dark tile floors, and
the hexagonal tiles that add a 3D effect to the ceiling. Hidden from sight are
high-tech tools that control the temperature and humidity.
Ideas for decking your doors, stairs, mantels and tables
It’s that time of year. Time to add a few festive touches to your home as you prepare for gathering
with friends and family over the holidays. While your options run the gamut from traditional to whimsical,
homespun to luxurious, you also have the option to not let the task of decorating for the holidays
overwhelm you. ➻
housetrends idea book 2021 59

In this feature, we have identified four key areas—excluding the
tree—where you might want to focus your attention. Instead of
spreading your effort throughout the house, perhaps you might
gather your fir branches, figurines, lights and thoughts and create
one space that showcases your family’s personality.
Here we share ideas for decorating your front door, staircases,
mantels and fireplaces.
Grunder Landscaping Co. Photo by Daniel Feldkamp
Make a grand entrance
Invite your neighbors and guests to share in your holiday spirit
by adding a swag of white pine above the door or reimagine your summer
planters to create clusters with a celebratory flair. Pinecones, lanterns,
bows, oversized ornaments and even vintage toys are effective
when creating an elegant and inviting case of curb appeal, holiday style.
And while they set the standard for front door décor, wreaths can be
used just about anywhere in the home. They’re especially wonderful
when they add an inviting scent to the space. While that often comes
in the form of pine, other items you may have in your pantry—like cinnamon,
cloves or citrus—add a delightfully unexpected aroma. ➻

housetrends idea book 2021 61

Step it up
Whether they are inside or out, a
staircase sets an inviting stage for
holiday décor. How about taking
advantage of all those beautifully
wrapped presents by stacking a few
up the side of the steps instead of
keeping them all under the tree?
If you’re lucky enough to have a
magnolia tree on your property—
or have a friendly neighbor nearby
who does—crisp and shiny magnolia
leaves add an elegant touch
to a banister treatment. If you
have any extra swag a lush strand
of garland works wonders when
draped on an oversized mirror.
Cloak your mantel
With the exception of the tree, the
mantels above our fireplaces are
often where much of our holiday
decorating happens. Anything goes
when it comes to this decorating real
estate.
A roping of garland with soft white
lights and a statement bow is a classic
choice. Or you might want to create
a snowy scene indoors with a
medley of whites, creams, and ivories.
A sprig or two of vibrant green
pine adds a natural contrast to this
grouping. But sometimes it just
needs to be all about those stockings.
Also, don’t be afraid to repeat yourself.
It makes life a bit easier and it
creates a cohesive look throughout
your home. Use the same type of icy
blue baubles on the mantel as you did
on your dining room chandelier. ➻
Sitting pretty
Add a gauzy ribbon to the back of
your chairs to bring a festive touch
to your dining room without sacrificing
that much-needed real estate
on the tabletop. Add in a sprig of
pine, or tie on a colorful ornament
and you will have a beautiful setting
that carries through from breakfast,
lunch or dinner and often on to the
next day of entertaining.
Another idea that works when table
space is at a premium is to hang ornaments,
greenery and baubles of all
sorts from your chandelier. Give it a
little personality by adding cherished
ornaments that have a story behind
them. It’s a great conversation starter,
especially for family members ready
to share their precious memories.
Whatever holiday your family celebrates—we
wish you the happiest
and the merriest this season.
initial concept all the way through completion. We were amazed at how he was able
to capture the vision we had for our space and effortlessly turn it into reality. There
truly is an art to the level of detail that goes into designing a space and executing the
process, and Kitchen Kraft certainly has that mastered.” - Chad
