THE MADISON
EXPERIENCE
Bridging past and present,
Madison has long extended a
welcome to newcomers and visitors.
BY ANDREW FARINACCIO
• MADISON TRAIN STATION
W
hat began as Bottle Hill, a humble village established
around 1715, is now a thriving center of culture and
commerce in the heart of New Jersey. Before Madison
was Madison, or even Bottle Hill, for that matter, it was
home to the Lenape people. Europeans first arrived
during the British colonial period; a Presbyterian church
built in 1747 anchored the early settlement. Most of the
newcomers arrived seeking land, commercial opportunities and political
autonomy. A cluster of residences in the Bottle Hill Historic District of
Madison are remnants from colonial days. Particularly notable is the Luke
Miller House at 105 Ridgedale Avenue. Built around 1730, it is thought to
be the area’s oldest remaining home. The name “Madison” came to be in
1834. Finding “Bottle Hill” too rustic, residents renamed the settlement for
James Madison, fourth president of the United States and namesake of the
local private school, Madison Academy.
Four years after Madison got its name, the Morris and Essex Railroad
connected it to Newark and Hoboken. The railroad’s presence turned early
Madison into a suburb of Newark and New York, marking a major
change in course for the borough’s history.
The convenience of a passenger train attracted many wealthy families
to Madison, especially those who already owned large parcels of
land in the area. This influx of affluence gave rise to “Millionaire’s
Row,” a line of estates that ran along Madison Avenue from downtown
Madison and west to Morristown.
Madison owes its Rose City reputation to the railroad as well. Even
before it was incorporated in 1889, Madison was often referred to as
The Rose City. The nickname stemmed from the millions of roses
sent by train from Madison to New York each year.
The roses that gave Madison its unofficial title were grown yearround
in greenhouses, an innovation introduced to the area by the
many estates. Though the last of Madison’s commercial greenhouses
dried up in the 1970s, roses remain evident in the town’s logo, street
names such as Rose Avenue and elsewhere.
The Dodge Family is another lasting part of Madison’s heritage.
THE MADISON
EXPERIENCE
Said to be the wealthiest newlyweds
in the country when they married
in 1907, Ethel Geraldine Rockefeller
Dodge, the youngest child of William
Avery Rockefeller Jr., and her
husband, Marcellus Hartley Dodge
Sr., president of the Remington Arms
Company, lived separately on adjoining
country estates.
Giralda Farms, where Ethel Rockefeller
resided, fronted the main route
from Madison to Morristown. It is
• HARTLEY DODGE MEMORIAL BUILDING
now the site of Giralda Farms Corporate
Campus, a 375-acre office park
on Madison’s western edge.
Other Dodge family contributions to Madison include the Hartley Dodge Memorial
Building and the Collegiate Gothic-style Madison Train Station, which together
anchor the Madison Civic Commercial Historic District. Both buildings were donated
in honor of Marcellus Hartley Dodge Jr., the couple’s only child.
Radiating from the district’s core is Madison’s walkable downtown. Main
Street, aka Route 124, which bisects the borough’s 4.21 square miles, is lined with
an eclectic array of shops and restaurants.
Entertainment and cultural options
abound, including the Museum of Early Trades
& Crafts, an ever-popular field trip destination
with a collection of more than 8,000 artifacts.
Just to the west of downtown is the
picturesque campus of Drew University.
Further west lies the Florham Campus of
Fairleigh Dickinson University, bridging
the towns of Florham
Park and Madison.
The campus consists
of 178 acres, part of • FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON UNIVERSITY
Florham, a former
country estate of early 20th-century socialites Florence
Vanderbilt and Hamilton Twombly. Less than a mile beyond
FDU is the campus of Saint Elizabeth University in Convent
Station.
Madison is not just a great place to visit. It’s also a “fantastic
place to live,” says lifelong resident Scott Spelker, an
agent with Coldwell Banker and the Borough Historian. Price
• DREW UNIVERSITY
appreciation and an easy train commute to Manhattan have
made Madison particularly attractive to millennials and New
York City transplants. Historical significance only sweetens the deal, says Spelker.
It’s no surprise that real estate is booming in Madison—as it has in other
desirable New Jersey communities. Currently, the median home-sale price in
Madison is approximately $880,000, though some homes go for as low as
$300,000-$400,000. On the other end of the spectrum are homes priced
at $2.8 million and beyond. It's further testimony to Madison's diversity.
Whatever brings you to Madison, be it the history, the shopping and
dining, or to take part in festivities such as Bottle Hill Day, you’ll appreciate
the way the borough bridges past and present.
• SHAKESPEARE THEATRE OF NEW JERSEY
Spend some time in Madison and it quickly becomes clear: The arts are ingrained
in the fabric of this historic Morris County municipality.
“While many communities provide access to arts and culture, in Madison,
we try to integrate this into every aspect of our lives,” says Deborah Farrar
Starker, executive director of the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts. “Many
prominent arts and cultural assets can be found within the 4.21 miles that
make up the borough.”
A key downtown Madison attraction, the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts tells the
stories of early settlers in New Jersey. The museum holds a collection of approximately
9,000 objects and artifacts relating to the trades and crafts of the 18th and 19th centuries.
The main building, a Richardsonian Romanesque Revival structure built in 1899, houses
two levels of exhibit space and a museum shop. The Education Annex, located across
the street, serves as a center for all educational programming.
Another pillar of the Madison arts community is the Shakespeare
Theatre of New Jersey. Led by longtime artistic director Bonnie J. Monte,
the professional producing theater is dedicated solely to Shakespeare’s
presents its main stage season in the intimate F.M. Kirby Shakespeare
Theatre, located on the Drew University campus. In the summer, productions
move to Saint Elizabeth University’s outdoor Greek amphitheater
stage in nearby Florham Park. Also in Florham Park is the company’s
50,000-square-foot Thomas H. Kean Theatre Factory. This marvelous
facility houses the company’s behind-the-scenes operations, including set
Drew University itself is a hub for the arts
in Madison. The wooded, 186-acre campus
the 350-seat Dreyfuss Theater hosts productions
For dinner and a show, Shanghai Jazz is
an upscale restaurant serving Asian fare
of business development for the borough.
Arts & Culture Alliance board member. “All our creative and cultural
activities—street festivals, art shows, live performances, museums, and
theater—are supported by both the residents and the local municipality.”
Speaking of street festivals, perhaps the best time to visit Madison
is Bottle Hill Day, October 2. The day-long event combines the arts,
music, vendors and food. Additional planned festivals for 2021 include
the Holiday Arts Festival on November 26–27. Musicians, poets, singers
1820
200 Years
Celebrating a Milestone
While Looking Ahead to the Future
From its inception in 1820, BURROUGHS, KOHR & DANGLER
has always been, and remains to be, a family owned and
operated funeral home – celebrating 200 years and now
in its third generation with the Dangler family.
In 1820, Caleb Burroughs moved to
Madison, NJ, and opened a furniture
making business. Eventually, the business
was taken over by his son, Edwin,
followed by Edwin’s son, Preston. In
those early years, the local furniture
maker also made coffins for the deceased
in the community. As they became
more involved in the funeral business,
they offered other services, such as
transporting coffins, digging graves, etc.
In fact, they also assisted with the transport
of remains throughout Northern
New Jersey and New York.
Preston Burroughs eventually passed
the business to his daughter, Margaret,
wife of Robert Kohr, and the business
then became known as Burroughs &
Kohr Funeral Home. In 1979, the Kohrs
sold the funeral home to the Dangler
family. Because of the history and outstanding
reputation associated with
the Burroughs and Kohr families, the
Dangler family added their name which
resulted in the Burroughs, Kohr &
Dangler Funeral Home.
After the death of her own husband,
James E. Dangler, in 2005, Elizabeth
“Betty” Razzo Dangler became the owner
of the Burroughs, Kohr & Dangler
Funeral Home in Madison.
Along with Betty,
the staff of the funeral
home, which includes
her daughter, Christine
Dangler, her cousin
Kip Dangler, and their
colleague, Samantha Muro, take care of
families who have suffered a loss.
Christine emphasizes, “We pride ourselves
on taking care of families before,
during and after a loss with dignity, respect
and integrity.” She continues, “We
know what it is to suffer loss. Taking
care of families is our first priority. We
assist families in creating meaningful
services or tributes to celebrate the life
and legacy of their loved ones. We let
Taking care
of families is our
first priority.
them know they’re not alone. We help
to guide them every step of the way.”
In addition to helping families who
suffer loss, the Burroughs, Kohr &
Dangler Funeral Home family and
staff have been active members in the
communities they serve.
For instance, every
year they sponsor
Little League teams;
donate to community
foodbanks, Thanksgiving
drives, and clothing
drives; give scholarships to Madison
High School Seniors; and support the
Madison Garden Club, and local Veteran’s
Associations. As Betty adds, “We’re
thankful that we’re able to take time to
give back to our communities.”
The Burroughs, Kohr & Dangler
family and staff realize the importance
of their vocation and are truly honored
to build on the legacies of those who
came before them.
The Dangler family and staff are proud to continue
to provide their dedicated, compassionate, and
personalized service to those in Madison and the
surrounding communities.
SHOP N’ STROLL
Madison’s downtown
is a browser’s paradise.
Want to go shopping
in Madison?
You’ll mainly
need to visit
Main Street.
In a short walk
on Main from
Green Village Road to Prospect Street,
with a loop around Waverly Place, you
can find everything from boutiques to
bookstores, hats to home furnishings.
Your Madison shopping spree
starts with plenty of free parking—
on the street and in the public lots
behind the stores on either side of
Main Street. Turn south off Main onto
Green Village Road for the entrance
to the Waverly Green parking area
(free two-hour parking). Find a spot
and step through Waverly Green Alley
to get back to Main Street.
The clean, wide, tree-lined sidewalks
along Main are perfect for a
leisurely stroll. True to Madison’s
historic roots, meticulously restored
19th-century brick buildings of various
hues flank the sidewalks. Public
benches and outdoor café tables
beckon passersby. Old-fashioned
gaslights add charm, and banners
documenting the borough’s “Hidden
Figures” (African-American
groundbreakers) such as Judge
Aubrey Eugene Robinson Jr. and
the Sallie Siblings) add history to
your exploration.
B O O KS ELLER
Alley onto Main Street and get ready to sample
Madison’s bounty. Need a quick bite before you
shop? Try the Bagel Chateau. Care to carry home
some Italian specialty foods? Healthy Italia is the
place to stop.
Next, turn right onto Waverly Place—but first,
do some window shopping at Rose City Jewelers.
Walk on and you’ll find Cambridge Street Papers,
with its selection of paper goods and gifts, and
Crowley Cupcakes, with its array of tasty treats.
Hungry for something more substantial or just
plain thirsty? Grab a table inside or out at the
popular Bottle Hill Tavern.
Now cross to the east side of Waverly Place
and browse the women’s fashions at Stitch or
satisfy your sweet tooth at Sugar Rush.
Crossing Main Street and turning left,
the first stop is Tons of Toys, where
you’ll literally find tons of good stuff for
the little ones. If knitting is more your
game, make a stop at the Blue Purl.
The shopping continues with Prima
(menswear), Pink Pear (gifts and accessories),
the Snooki Shop
(a fun and funky women’s
boutique from you know
who); Alfred’s Sport Shop
(outdoor gear); and Madison
Pet (lest you forget your
best friend).
Now you really deserve a treat.
Set down your shopping totes and indulge
in a cup or cone at McCool’s Ice Cream
Parlour.
Satisfied? Cross Main Street and
consider a visit to the Museum of Early
Trades & Crafts. Or a final stop at the
Chatham Bookseller on Green Village Road.
All of this in the
space of two blocks.
That’s shopping,
CASUAL TO FINE
Heading to Madison?
Plan to come hungry.
If you are coming to Madison,
come hungry. This small
borough can make meal
times memorable from sun
up to well after dark.
“We have everything
from cafes to taverns with
burgers to fine Italian restaurants,
Il Mondo Vecchio being probably
the best known,” says Marty
Horn, a resident for 30 years.
Horn and three Madison partners
own Bottle Hill Tavern, which
they renovated in 2018. Under
different names and locations,
it dates to around 1812.
“We’re on Waverly Place,
which has lots of retail, eateries
and food shops, like Crowley’s
Cupcakes and Sugar Rush, a really
cute candy shop. Shanghai Jazz
is a popular place for live music
and authentic Chinese food, and
there’s excellent Thai, like Palm
Thai and Nahm Thai.”
Horn often starts his day with
a Taylor ham, egg and cheese at
C&Js Deli. You also may find him
there at lunch, tucking into
a turkey sloppy joe.
