Celebrating 70 Years

Welcome to our new catalogue.
It has been another interesting and challenging year for us all.
At Rutherford we have met the challenges by pushing ahead with a new store opening
and the production of this special anniversary edition catalogue. Thank you to our clients
who have supported us this year - with a purchase, a kind word or some positive feedback.
Thank you to our staff who have faced a challenging year of opening and closing stores
and all the difficulties this has entailed.
Rutherford 70th Anniversary
In 2022 we will be celebrating 70 years since my
father, Bruce Rutherford, opened his first store in
Yarrawonga in 1952.
My father always had a passion for jewellery,
antiques and retailing. This desire took him on
a journey of stores in country Victoria; training
at Sotheby’s in London; becoming Sotheby’s
Australian representative; holding their first
auction in Australia at the Sydney Opera House;
and finally opening his own store in Collins Street
Melbourne.
His passion and values, along with his business
drive, are a great part of our business 70 years on.
I joined my father in 1988 and learned the trade beside him. These were memorable years
as we expanded and grew the business together.
Along the way we have had stores in Bourke Street, in several different locations along
Collins Street, and in 2008 we opened our first store in Camberwell.
Over the years, most members of our extended family have assisted or worked in the
business, whether on the shop floor or in the background. It has truly been and continues to
be a family business. More of our story can be found on the About Us page on our website.
Some of our clients have been with us for all or a great part of this journey. From time to
time someone will say, ‘’we bought our engagement ring from your father in Yarrawonga’’

or “my parents have shopped with
Rutherford for years and my partner and I
are here to find our engagement ring”. This
means so much to us and reminds us of
the connection we have with people over
their lifetimes. We share engagements,
weddings, births and other memorable
anniversaries and occasions. It is such a
joy and a privilege to be a part of those
significant celebrations and to journey
with clients through the generations.
New Camberwell Store
The goal to expand our Camberwell store was in place for some time before Covid
arrived. We were pleased to open the new store on 17th April 2021.
The design and inspiration come from
the beauty and timelessness of our
antique jewellery and pearls. The front,
in particular, is inspired by Art Deco shop
fronts of the 1920s and the steel gates
echo the shape and design of the famous
Chrysler Building in New York. Inside
you will find a carefully balanced mix of
antique and modern décor. My wife Siân,
who manages the store, would love to
welcome you in.
Our 70th Anniversary Catalogue
Over the last 12 months we have been working on creating our best catalogue yet. On
the pages that follow you will see pieces we have held aside for many months such as
the impressive antique cushion cut and old European cut diamonds, each in excess of
five carats, featured on page 7. Lovers of French antique jewellery will find a beautiful
emerald clasp, an elegant pair of Art Deco drop earrings and some wonderful diamond
and sapphire pieces. Our kunzite pendant and blue tourmaline suite of jewellery will
appeal to gemstone enthusiasts and we have included more brooches this year than
ever before! On our pearl pages I have released a personal collection of large, unique
loose pearls. I have been building this collection for nearly five years. It has been a joy
to collect these stunning pearls and I look forward to seeing where each one goes and
how it will be worn.

have shared with us. We thank our family members for the support and encouragement
they have given along the way. And we would also like to especially thank our team of
gifted and dedicated staff who have made this all possible.
