Welcome to the November 2021 edition of The
Halfway & Westfield Doorsteppa.
We hope everyone in the local community is coping
well in the cold and wet as the winter quickly
approaches. Asalways, we have lots of interesting
articles toread by the fire (or at least sat near the
radiator!)
In our Entertainment section we have all the details
of the winners ofthis years Eckington’s Got Talent.
The event was again a bit different as it was
broadcast on Facebook due to the pandemic. This
didn’t deter the performers though,and you can see
allthe info on page 27.
All the countrieswereremoved from theUK’s Travel
‘Red List’ recently so what better time to start
planning your 2022 holiday. Lisa Byers has a

On the16th October 2021 the LocalHistory Day was
held at Killamarsh Methodist Church. This is an
annual event but due to the pandemic it wasn’t
possible in 2020. The decision was made to go ahead
and hold it this year with history groups and
associations being invited from local communities
such as Eckington, Barlborough & Mosborough.

details of how the day went.

Terry Fox welcomes budget Supertram cash
Sheffield City Council’s leader has
welcomed the news that Wednesday’s
budget will include £570m for transport
projects in South Yorkshire –including
around £200m for Sheffield.
But the council leader added that much
more government investment in public
transport would be necessary to give
Sheffield commuters a service
comparable to that enjoyed byLondonersand
make “levelling up” areality.
Cllr Terry Fox said: “This is welcome
news. We’ve fought hard for this for a
long time, and we’ll put the cash to good
use to improve Sheffielders’ transport
options.
“But we need much more than this, and
we’ll keep pressing. To unlock Sheffield’s
potential, we must have better public
transport.
“Remember that, per person, Sheffielders
still get alot less than Londoners in
government support for public transport.
“For instance the amount of funding on
buses per head inLondon is£76, but in
Sheffield this is less than £5. So the
government has along way to go before
‘levelling up’ canbemorethan aslogan.”
The fulldetail of the investment is yetto
be revealed, but is expected to see over
£200m invested in transport
improvements in Sheffield, including:

Over £35m on bus priority and public
transportenhancements
Over £25m on active travel measures
Over £15m on local neighbourhood
improvements

Winter hours for Sheffield’s Household
Waste Recycling Centres
From Monday 1st November, Sheffield’s
Household Waste Recycling Centres have
changed to their winteropening hours.
All five ofSheffield’s HWRCs will be open
9.30 am to 3.30 pm, until 31st March
2022. Residents are advised that the
previous temporary arrangements which
meant that all sites were open 7days a
week have now ended, and residents are
advised tocheck the site opening days
before theytravel to asite.

Freedom is aChristian charity supporting the vulnerable people
within the Northeast Midlands, South Yorkshire, and North
Nottinghamshire since 2008. Freedom currently has 14 support
centres providing debt advice, mental health support, housing
support, benefits advice and food bank to those onthe edge of
society.
Supported by Chesterfield Radio Freedom are launching a
campaign toraise awareness of people struggling in poverty by
highlighting the idea of not knowing what someone else’s life is
likeunless youwalkintheirshoes.
On Friday 3rd December Freedom is encouraging people to wear
different shoes than they normally would in their workplace or
home. These could be clown shoes, wellies, high heels, flippers
etc.
We are alsoworking with local schools to wear trainersorwellies
to school. Freedom is providing information packs to include
lesson plans, audio and video materials to help people think
about whatlifeislikefor people on theedgeofsociety.
We are encouraging people todonate aminimum of £1 to Freedom
to help supportthe valuable workFreedom is involved in.

LOCAL HISTORY DAY 2021
On Saturday the 16th of October, Killamarsh Heritage
Society were pleased to host the2021Local History Day
in the MethodistChurch on Sheffield Road.
The Local History Day isheld annually to showcase the
history and heritageofthe local area, and local villages
take theirturn in hosting andtaking part in the event.
On the Killamarsh Heritage Society stand Ispoke to
many people who brought along with them
photographs and memorabilia todonate to our group
to be kept to record the history and heritage of
Killamarsh.
Obviously, due to the pandemic it wasn’t possible to
hold theevent in 2020.
However, the decision was taken tohold this year’s
event and Killamarsh Heritage Society was happy to

Local history groups and associations were invited to
take part in this year’s event and displays were put on
by groups from Eckington, Mosborough, Aston cum
Aughton, Harthill, Barlborough, Killamarsh and also
Chesterfield Canal Trust.
We would like tothank the villages who took part this
year and for creating such alovely atmosphere. When
holding an event in our village you cannever be sure of
what the attendance will be like.
But thank you to everyone who came along to learn
about the history and heritage of where you live.
People attended from all around the areaand everyone
was so interested in the displays and information and
askedquestions.
People also said they have things at home which they
will be passing on to us.
Coffee and teas and biscuits were being served and
everyone took the opportunity to meet up and chat
with old friends and new. Ispoke to people who no
longer live inKillamarsh, but came specially to join us
(from Sheffield,Derbyand Northampton).
All-in-all avery enjoyable andsuccessful event.

Eckington’s Got Talent 2021
We were simply blown away bythe
talent on display through lockdown
and Christmas on Sir Capt Toms
Moore Facebook page. We had
an amazing audience of over 95,000
from all over the world, our
Christmas songs received over 108k
views.
We had abig show plannedour 10th
year anniversary and only one act
signed up! We weredevastatedeven
thinking about Eckington’s Got
Talent not going ahead in alive venue
again for the secondyear running.
It looked like everyone was still very
wary about performing in public.
But, never to be defeated wegot up
and got onwith it, and change plans
just two weeks before the event. As
2020 was on line we went back to
the drawing board toput our show
backonFacebook forasecond year.
While still riding on cloud nine after
our amazing virtual shows - we
couldn’t believe it when Britain’sGot
Talent Superstars Soldiers of Swing
The military singing duo -made up of
reservists Corporal Lee Day and
Sergeant Vince Fountain -said they
were ‘blown away’ and urged our
singers to keepitup. Theyimpressed
they wanted to work with us, so Lee
and Vince became our hosts on the
night. Also, Julian Smith another
finalist of Britain’s Got Talent who
we worked with in lockdown raising
money for the NHS. Sent us a
message to say how impressed he
was and good luckwiththe show.So,
they allhad some fantasticsupport.
By September 29, we had 22
amazing entries signed up for our
showplusone actfrom Americaand
together with our judges they
couldn’twait for the2nd October.
On the panel was music producer
Steve Stirland who has been with us
every year from ourvery first showin
2012.
Easy Street Theatre Company
director and the founder of Picture
House Youth Theatre Sallyanne
Foster-Major was alsoonthe panelas
was Easy Street company
choreographer and principal of
Amanda Hollands school of dance,
Amanda Tyas.
New to this year’s panel was
Stephine King who’s first gigasapro
singer was with Martha Reeves and
the Vandellas.
All 3ofour judges weresoimpressed
by every single one of the
submissions put forward for our
three categories: Under 10's, Under
16's andAdult.
Aspecial congratulations goes to our
winnersIsabelle Askew aged 9; Emily
Green age 11;and KerenFirth.
Ahuge well done is owed to our
runners up too, which were:
Ava-Grace Barkworthage 9; Zak Mills
age 13 andJessicaFirth.
The Star of the show went to
Shirinjoy for entering all the way
from Illinois near Chicago. Shirinjoy
has been following Eckington Got
Talent through Lockdown on Sir
Capt.Toms page then joined us.
All in all, we raised an incredible
£240 for Ashgate Hospicecare. This
makes a whopping grand-total of
£9089 raised for local charities over
the 10years we’ve been putting on
Eckington’s Got talent.
So no,the last2years have not been
easy. We’ve been faced with
impossible challenges but they have
also been atestament to everything
our community can achieve when
they come together.
Here’s to nextyear being ashowthat
will be bigger and betterthan ever.
