She hopesthe figure will increasethis weekend with people taking advantage of <strong>Canterbury</strong> Anniversary Day tomorrow, to travelnorth for the festival. More than 30 Kaikoura hospitality and activity businesses are taking part in the 16dayfestival whichbegan on Friday, October 29 and endsonSunday. The festival is acelebration of crayfish, Kaikoura’s most famous kaimoana, and the Maori meaningofKaikoura —‘‘to eat crayfish’’. It is difficulttosay how many crayfish havebeen eaten to date, Melinda says, but one of the key aims of Crayfest was to promotesustainability of the delicacy. ‘‘Ithas been excitingtosee how many different waysitcan be used. Thereis something to suitall budgets and tastebuds.’’ Dishesinclude barbecue crayfish, crayfish sliderand bisqueplatter, grilled crayfish chowder, crayfish dumplings, and crayfish ravioli. PHOTO: FIONA FARQUHAR Transparency in funding needed By DAVID HILL Waka Kotahi/ the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA)needs amore transparent funding model,Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon says. Mr Gordon was commenting as his council grapples with afundingshortfall from the latest NationalLandTransport Plan funding round, which leavesseveral localroadingprojects in doubt. Mr Gordon would like to see afunding modelfrom NZTA which gives councils more certainty.Hewas particularly disappointed the council’swalking and cycling initiatives missedout, given the agency’s focusonalternativetransport. NZTA committed justhalf of its share (of 51 percent) of the council’s proposed $13.2 million minorsafetyimprovements budget and left a$1.25million shortfall on the roadingmaintenance budget. At last week’s council meeting, roading and transportmanager JoanneMcBride said NZTA’s funding shortfall was due in part to areductioninpetroltax, its main source of funding, due to lessvehicle usage following Covid19 restrictions.Staff recommended collectinganextra$1 millionfrom nextyear’s ratesbill to meet some of the shortfall. Councillors will holdaworkshop to discussthe various options, ahead of next year’s annual plan deliberations. The minorsafety improvements budget funds low cost projects suchasintersection improvements, roadside hazards, school safety projects and minor lighting upgrades. Mr Gordon and WoodendSefton Community Board chairperson Shona Powell were due to meet with NZTA chief executive Nicole Rosie yesterday (<strong>November</strong> 10) with the absence of funding for promised Woodend safety improvements high on the agenda. Kaikoura District Council chief executive Will Doughty says there is expectedtobeanational conversation earlynext year around NZTA’sfunding modeland how its priorities can be better aligned with councils. He says the fundingmodelcouldwork wellbut it’s about‘‘making sure we’re all moving in the right direction’’.The shift to other transport modes suchaswalking, cycling, publictransport and electriccars, meant arethinkmight be neededaround petrol tax beingthe primary funding source. The council wasinitially left witha30% funding shortfall in its roading plan, but has since received a$500,000boostfrom central government, Mr Doughty says. Many car dealers /workshop owners might say they provide the best customer experience or say they offerexceptional value for money, but do they really? Ibelieve Cactus Cars does as they’ve achieved an incredible 97% customer approval rating &anoverall 4.82 star rating out of 5 &the first Dealership/workshop in Kaiapoi to achieve abuyer score award. Ifeel Cactus Carsisabit of ahidden geminKaiapoi &inmyopinion, well worthavisit. Paul Burbidge of Cactus Cars says his business modelisabitdifferent to other car dealers. It’s not good or bad, just different. Paul said they mainly purchase damaged vehicle’s and breathe life back into them via the workshop & panel shop asthis keeps the overall sale price ofthe vehicles affordable for their customers. Some vehicles might need areplacement engine or transmission and other might need abit of panel &paint TLC. Paul saidhenever buys writtenoff or de-registered vehicles, just cars requiring some mechanical or panel &paintTLC. Once the vehicles are brought back to life, they’re all sold with anew 12 month WOF from an independent MTA assured workshop, 12 month registration, 12 month full mechanical brake down insurance, serviced, groomed and afull tank of gas and Paul says he guarantees every vehicle he sells and every job they do in the workshop. Paul &Deb (owners of Cactus Cars) are committed to helping the local community where they can. And both believe, when people need your help, then you help where you can “No questions, No Judgement” offering second chance finance option for the car sales &Afterpay and Genoapay account payment option for the workshop. About two years ago Paul &Deb answered aneed in Kaiapoifor amore affordableautomotiverepair service and purpose built anew workshop next to their car sales yard. The New workshop has aqualified team, all the latest equipment and diagnostic gear to provide WOF repairs &a full mechanical repair service for Kaiapoi with truly affordable charges asPaul felt some automotive repair quotes he’s seen were just getting out of control and too expensive for many people. Leaving some people with no choice but to drive unsafe or un-warranted cars and is just not right! Cactus Cars now has many customer making the shorttrip out from Christchurch for more affordable WOF repairs and vehicle maintenance &the while you wait service and the many courtesy cars available makes the service even more convenient. The workshop has been open now for about two years and my research identified the business has many very complimentary reviews on Google, Facebook, Needacar, Trade Me&Buyer Score and has built asolid reputation for fixing some extremely complex challenges other workshops struggle with &getting many repair jobs completed for sometimes for half the cost of other workshops. 165 Williams Street, Kaiapoi Ph Paul 03 327 2961 027 586 7570 www.cactuscars.co.nz Paul &Deb said the team all work real hard to make sure all their customers are happy and running asmall business can be tough sometimes, however knowing they have the support ofthe locals means the world to them and they would like to thank everyone for all their support throughout these tough times and for all the complimentary reviews that lead to their surprise Buyer Score award. 2432513v1
