Old toys, games and books have been dustedoff and are on displayinthe museum on Main Street. Receiving just an orange, a penny bag of sweets, somenuts or asmall toy was notunusual for many previous generations. There is an area in the museum for children to play with someofthe sturdierold toys enjoyed by children decades ago. Children are invitedtomake evergreen decorations, Christmas cardsand to tackle a festive quiz. Admissionisfreetothe exhibition,but children must be accompanied by an adult to enter theexhibition and a donation is appreciated. Themuseum building is sharedwith MethvenLibrary and is open Tuesday andFriday between 2pm and 4pm. Part of the nostalgic festive display at Methven Museum. Methven website refresh There’s beenarefresh andupgrade of awebsite promoting Methven and the wider area. Themethvennz.co.nz website promotes the township as the ‘Gateway to ... the real New Zealand’. Informationislaid out under ‘Live’, ‘Work’ and ‘Play’ categories thatfeature text, photosand videos. Therefresh of the events calendar and some other areas havebeenfunded by the Methven Community Board (MCB), but most of the new look work has beendone for free by Methvenbasedmarketing andstrategygroup LLAMA. MCB chairman Dan McLaughlin said the website waslooking good andafew more bits were still to be added over the next few months. Thewebsiteand brand identity had needed updatingand was seen as atool to promote economic development, including tourism,for Methven and thefoothills towns,MrMcLaughlin said. Library has Hoopla Digital Ashburton Public Library has added the content streaming service Hoopla Digital to its services, so patrons can read eBooks, watch movies and hit TV series plus listen to audiobooks and music for free by using their library card. Patrons can access more than 750,000 titles by downloading Hoopla Digital's mobile app from their app store, or online at www.hoopladigital. co.nz. Titles can be borrowed to enjoy immediately on your computer, tablet, phone and television, or downloaded for offline enjoyment later. It really complements the library’s collection strategy and enhances its reputation as athoroughly modern library.” CLUB NEWS Ashburton MSAPetanque Club We are planning to do something different monthly on aThursday, so recently we had aShooting andPointing Competition which the members enjoyed. Such events will help in building confidence to try these in tournaments. Acoupleofevents have been cancelled recently due to Covid but coming up at Canterbury Show Weekend is the Women’s and Men’s Triples at Alexandra, to which afew of our players aregoing. On 20 and 21 November the South Island Senior Doubles are being held here,agood chance to see other top players perform among Ashburton teams. The following weekend we are hosting alocal firm for the first part oftheir Christmas party, which will involve afew ends of petanque with drinks and nibbles. Something different for our members to be part of and to raise afew funds. We recently produced name tags for ourplayers to wear, especially when competing against out of towners, most of whomwear one. If you are apast member, keep 27 March 2022 free to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. It is pleasing to see new members who havejoined our club recently and are partnered with more experienced players for on hands training and encouragement. Players are welcome to join us any Tuesday and Thursday, just after 1pm, at 115 Racecourse Road. Mid Canterbury Rural Women How difficult it must have been forthose to make the decision to have avery limited AshburtonShow. For those who entered, congratulations, for the Ashburton A&P Show is part of Ashburton’s yearly calendar,just as Winter goes into Spring. And what alovely time of year, asthe days lengthen and warm up, the trees sprout new leaves and very colourful blooms appear. All this amid the intense work load of the farming regime, as the spring commitments on farm are endured with many hours of hard work. With public events rescheduled, postponed or cancelled, it was not surprising the RuralWomen national conference and AGM have been cancelled due to the Covid situation. Planned to be held in Christchurch, hostedby our Region 2team, the AGM component will now be held by zoom,from Wellington, for members to register and partake in, for the two and a half hour event. Members can look forward to the next Express magazine for information regarding the AGM.Apre AGMinformation webinar is planned for Thursday 11 November at 10am. As this is the rescheduled day for our next monthly meeting (because of Canterbury Anniversary Day) our meeting will start at 9.30am at the Sinclair Centre and we will link into this national office meetingtohear about proposals for the AGM. AshburtonBowling Club Life atAshburton Bowling Club has been of amore orderly fashion this past week after the staging of the Ladies CharteredClubs Tournament. The Ashburton Ladies Championshipfours have progressed to the final stage. The finalisbetween Diane Gurberlet’s team, with Shirley Taylor, Alison Gibbs, Shirley Maw and Margaret Eder’s team, withAnnette Blain, Heather Gray, AnneGibson. It was scheduled to be played on Tuesdaymorning and the results will be forthcoming. In the meantime the Ashburton Ladies Championship singles 1st round matches were also scheduled to commence on Tuesdaymorning and afternoon.Thoseresults, of course,will be at alater date. TeamsofAshburton Ladies travelled to Rakaia on Monday morning to take partinthe rearranged Murton Cupfours tournament. Results will be forthcoming. At the recent Papanui Club Ladies Triples held in Christchurch, the team of Wendy Suttie, Pat McElwain, Diane Gutberlet came 1st overall. Well done,ladies! We staged our inhouse Ingold Tray competition, sponsored by Netherby Meats, on Saturdayafternoon. Everyonejoined in the atmosphere, not least of all when our past president, Murray Anderson, did a‘down trou’ on the green after aloss to nil! The results of the day were: 1st –JKewish, ABlain, L Mills with 2 1 ⁄2 wins, 13 ends, 25 points. 2nd –HGoodall, RDaker,G Sparkswith 2 1 ⁄2 wins, 10 ends, 13 points. 3rd –AHill, GTaylor, H Kemp with 2wins,14ends,17 points. www.ashburtoncourier.co.nz Hypocrisy of climate politics RURAL Ashburton Courier, November 11, 2021 17 Ihave watched with disdain the circus of the climate conference COP26 recently held in Glasgow. All manner of world leaders and elites made their way to Glasgow to collectively agonise over the Climate Emergency and the urgent need for us all to change our ways. Well, what they actually mean is us change our ways, not them. President Biden arrived in a 747 with asecond 747 as adecoy and afleet of Globemaster heavy transport planes carrying the 80 odd vehicles and helicopters that make up his motorcade. Jeff Bezos of Amazon arrived by private jet, as did many of the other elites. Prince Charles even made an appearance, because keeping up appearances at things like climate conferences are everso important.They all spoke of the urgent need to reduce our impact. No argument from me on that at all. What Ididn’t see was any Ford Festivas, Ididn’t see any of them sitting down the back in cattle class like the rest of us when we occasionally fly. Even our very own James Shaw was in on the act, just unfortunately he turned up with his entourage aweek late, but schedules can be such fiddly things to get right. The thing that gets me is this, if we are faced with aclimate emergency, and let’s not debate that here, and if it is as dire as predicted, then action is required from all of us. The lifestyle we know will and must change. Therewill be no flitting up to Christchurch for the weekend, our clothes will need to go back to being natural fibres and worn for years, or passed down families likewhen we were kids so will need to be made of a durable quality to last. Consumer goods,cars, TVs will need to become luxury items purchased sparingly and expected to last. Our borders may needto remainclosedtoall but the most essentialbusiness travel. Our generation will be the last of the great travellers. That is of course if we are serious. Let’s be honest, buying an electric car and thinking your contributionisdone, is utterly meaningless if our additional electricity is being generated by importing 1.4mtonnesofcoal from Indonesia annually to burn in power stations. Any political proclamations claiming these new EVs are virtuous is just fairy dust. If we are serious about EVs, then we need to be building hydrogeneration, windfarms and solar generation capacity with haste.But we are not, are we? If we are serious, we would be ensuring our manufactured goods are being made with renewable energy sources, but if we are just moving our manufacturing capacity or outsourcing our goods to countries that have not pledged to reduce emissions, we are just being NIMBYsonacountry wide scale. (Not In Our Back Yard). If we are serious, we wouldn’t just be creating amoneygoround. We willnot make any progress until we reduce the amount of fossilfuel burnttopower the modernhumanlifestyle. New Zealandfarmers are working on aplan to accelerate the reduction of methane from our livestock, called He Waka Eke Noa, the primarysector climate partnership;and through technologies as they becomeavailable. In fact, we are the only sector of New Zealandsocietyworkingona plan for actual reductions ratherthan offsets. As for the elites, Joe, Jeff, James,Charles,etal, comesit down the back in cattle withme beforeyou start lecturing me on my impact.
