President’s
Welcome
Welcome to all the players, supporters,
teachers, and families from both Ballymena
Academy and Methody to today’s final.
I would like to thank to our sponsors Danske
Bank for their continued backing of all our
schools’ competitions.
This is the first running of this U16 tournament,
and it has proven to be a great forum for
players from Medallion to make the step from
junior rugby up to the senior level.
There have been a total of 35 games completed
in this exciting new tournament and we are
now at the finals stage.
I want to wish all the teams competing in the
3 respective finals today the very best, and
hopefully everyone will have a great day.
Welcome
from
Danske Bank
Message from the
Ulster Schools’ Committee
It is with great pleasure that we
congratulate Ballymena Academy,
Methodist College Belfast, Dalriada
School, The Royal School Armagh,
Limavady Grammar School and Regent
House on reaching today’s Danske Bank
Ulster U16 Schools’ Finals.
This is the first year that a competition
has been played at this level and attracted
entries from 25 schools at three different
levels. From the outset, the purpose of
this competition has been twofold. Firstly,
to provide a good level of competitive
rugby for that group of players who
missed out on last year’s Medallion Shield.
Secondly, it was also seen as a way to help
these players transition into senior rugby
by keeping them together for a period of
time. The competition has seen at total
of 35 matches played to date with the
three finals all taking place today at three
different venues.
Over recent years, the Schools’ Committee,
along with support from schools, has been
promoting the IRFU Codes of Conduct
and I hope that everyone respects
them, ensuring a positive experience for
everyone involved in today’s matches.
Danske Bank has been a generous and
loyal supporter of Ulster Schools’ Rugby
for the past 17 years. We are delighted
to have their support and welcome their
continued interest in rugby at this level.
We also thank them for their patience over
the past year and a half when very little
rugby was played due to the pandemic.
In conclusion, we thank the Ulster Society
of Rugby Football Referees for their
support of Ulster Schools’ Rugby and,
in particular, today’s referees and their
teams of officials.
We offer our best wishes to all teams and
hope that you all enjoy the games.
RJ Clingan
Chair, Ulster Schools’ Committee
It is with great pleasure that we welcome
you to the first Danske Bank U16 Schools’
Cup Final between Ballymena Academy
and Methodist College Belfast. It’s
exciting to see the return to sport in
schools across Northern Ireland and the
resumption of schools competitions.
This new competition has been an excellent
opportunity for last year’s Medallion
players to get back to competitive rugby
and we were delighted to see the Ulster
Schools’ Committee providing a format
to ensure players get more experience of
competitive rugby this season. It will also
be a great opportunity for pupils, parents,
siblings, coaches and teachers to throw
themselves back into the excitement of
watching live School Rugby after a long
eighteen month hiatus.
We’re an extremely proud sponsor of
youth rugby, GAA and football across
Northern Ireland, and we really hope to
see more competitive games for all over
the 2021/22 season.
I would like to take this opportunity to
congratulate the teams, their captains,
coaches, supporters, Ulster Rugby and
Ulster Schools’ Committee on their
commitment and dedication to getting
back to competitive school rugby.
On behalf of everyone at Danske Bank, I
wish both teams the very best of luck in
this first U16 final.
all are. Obviously, the Medallion
Shield was cancelled last year
and we didn’t think we’d get a
crack at a cup, but we’ve put in
so much hard work and we’re just
buzzing at the opportunity.
disappointed when it got called off. So we
all feel this is a great opportunity to have a
crack at a cup and to keep playing together.
“Methody will be a tough game, but we’ll
go out there and give it everything to bring
the cup home.”
“Our first game was BRA and we came
flying out of the blocks and scored a few
tries. Then it was Inst at home, and it’s
always a tough game against Inst. It was a
bit of a scrap, but we came out on the right
side and defended well, and then we had
Ballyclare in the last game and won easily.
“I was excited for this competition because
last season we felt we had a good chance
at the Medallion Shield and we were so
“So far in the Cup, I was injured and missed
the first game against Wallace, which we
won. We then played Campbell and it
was really close. They got a try in the first
minute and we were scrambling back, and
then won it with a conversion with the very
