Rolling thunder comes to Lockbourne a couple of

times a month, but this roar of motorcycles on

Sunday evenings stops at the edge of town at the Iron

Brothers LE motorcycle clubhouse.

Comprised mainly of police officers, first responders

and military, the club–started in 2001–is

named for the brotherhood members share and the

iron on which they ride.

“The main reasons we started the club is brotherhood

and wanting to help others that are in need,”

said club spokesman Chad Roberts, otherwise known

as “Reaper.” “This is a club of friends that love to ride.

It allows us to combine a love of riding, bonding us

through friendship and an extended family. We are

always looking for ways we help people in need, the

community and support each other.”

According to Roberts, club members selected the

Lockbourne site–the former home of a café, market

and gas station–because they liked the small-town feel

and are hoping to grow and support the community.

The Iron Brothers sponsor three major events each

year, including fundraisers for cancer research, cystic

fibrosis, and fallen officers and first responders.

A special little girl who touched the lives of club

members was a 6-year-old known to the brothers as

“KatieBug.” She had cystic fibrosis and Roberts said

she instantly stole the hearts of the Iron Brothers

members and families.

“We provided a lot of firsts for KatieBug,” said

Roberts, who said the girl spent most of her life in the

hospital aside from a few times she was released for

short periods of time. The Iron Brothers on more than

one occasion gave her a motorcycle escort home. We

had her seventh birthday party at Children’s

Hospital, took her to her first pumpkin patch and on

her first vacation. Sadly, we lost KatieBug within a

year of meeting her. Her strength, happiness, and

determination through everything she endured made

every one of us a better person. She told everyone we

were her big brothers.”

Obetz Mayor Angela Kirk outlined the upcoming holiday

events for the city.

On Dec. 10, there will be a tree lighting in downtown Obetz

with hot cocoa and cookies. City officials hope to have a choir sing

some Christmas carols that night.

On Dec. 11, Santa’s sleigh will travel through neighborhoods

starting at 5 p.m.

“We may not be done until 9 p.m., so make sure the kids are

awake and watching for that sleigh to come through,” said Kirk.

Currently, the lighting of the trail at Fortress Obetz is scheduled

for Dec. 12, but the city is considering another date. An

another announcement will be made on the city of Obetz’s

Facebook page so keep an eye out for that.

Obetz Police news

Obetz Police Chief Michael Confer shared some recent statistics

from the police department that included: 824 calls to service,

51 moving violations (11 of those were for speeding), five parking

citations, one felony misdemeanor arrest, 18 reports, and 14 automobile

crashes. There was also a hostage negotiation situation on

Meriline Avenue.

“Over the weekend a fight broke out between a couple of guys,”

said Confer. “One barricaded himself in his house. The three negotiators

for the Obetz Police came out and were able to get the man

out of his house after about an hour and deal with the consequences

of his actions. The man was transported to the hospital

for his injuries. He has been charged with having a weapon under

disability (having a weapon while intoxicated) and aggravated

menacing.”

Confer wasn’t able to name the man, yet, as the case is with the

prosecutor’s office.

Wiley Hill

Resident Becci Thacker-Dunn asked Obetz City Council when

the dedication of Wiley Hill will happen so that residents will

know where it is so kids can sled on it.

The big hill is near Fortress Obetz and is named for former

council member James Wiley, who died in October 2019. Council

posthumously honored him by renaming the newly-constructed

Obetz Sledding Hill to “Wiley Hill.” Wiley was known as an advocate

for the kids and

a big supporter for

the sledding hill.

Obetz City Administrator

Rod Davisson

explained the

delay in the dedication.

“Signs right now

are taking forever,”

said Davisson. “I’ll

make it work. It might

be a sign that’s not the

ultimate sign, but

enough to get it adopted.

It should have happened

much sooner.”

Tree farm’s time to shine

By Linda Dillman

Staff Writer

Imagine a farm where you work hard

all year, but your selling season lasts

less than a month and you have the

labor of love operated by tree farmers

Cecil and Melissa Rapp.

The couple started their Bedford

Falls Christmas Tree Farm in 2014

after purchasing a dilapidated, but historic

house more than 10 years ago,

along with acres of land in Lockbourne

nestled along a railroad line. They came

upon the abandoned farmhouse one day

while out for a Sunday drive and fell in

love with it and the location.

“We purchased the abandoned farmhouse

and land in 2003 with hopes to

save the historic 1848 home,” said

Melissa Rapp, “and it is still a work in

progress. We always dreamed of living

on a nice piece of land and wanted to do

something with it. My husband had

built commercial sprayers for the landscape

industry and when visiting his

customers that had tree farms, it was

always interesting. We love the fact that

we can do something with the land that

helps families make memories.”

While it took a year to just coax the

brick home into a habitable state, the

couple started clearing brush and trees

from the fields and planting fir and pine

seedlings with hopes of opening a viable

tree farm in the future.

In 2020, their dream was realized

when they opened their doors for the first

time to holiday memory makers the day

after Thanksgiving.

“We planted our first crop in 2014, and

continue to plant every spring,” said

Rapp. “We purchase 4,000 to 5,000

seedlings each spring. That sounds like a

lot, but there is some loss with each crop

that we have to plan on over the course of

the seven years or so that they grow

before harvest.”

The couple plant a variety of trees in

each field–White Pine, Fraser Fir,

Canaan Fir, Colorado Blue Spruce and

Concolor Fir–and the work is a lot harder

than they imagined.

“People may think that we only work

one month a year during the Christmas

season, but oh no,” she said.

There is field preparation and planting

in the spring, field mowing from April

to November, shaping and shearing trees

starting around the third year of growth,

pest control–sometimes by hand, weed

control and machinery maintenance.

Melissa and Cecil Rapp prepare one of the

thousands of trees they are growing on

their farm for the upcoming holiday season.

All accomplished by the couple alone

under the watchful eye of their Great

Dane, George.

Then there are the behind-the-scenes

activities such as bookkeeping, retail

shop purchases, marketing and planning

for everything to ensure a memorable

holiday experience for guests.

The Bedford Falls Christmas Tree

Farm–yes, the name celebrates the

magic of the fictional town in the classic

holiday film, “It’s a Wonderful Life”–

opens the day after Thanksgiving and

closes for the season this year on Dec.19.

Their regular hours are 11a.m. to 5 p.m.

Friday, Saturday, and Sundays and the

farm is located at 7258 Lockbourne Road.

“We supply saws for families to go into

our field to cut their own tree, we shake

them, net them and help load the trees on

the cars,” said Rapp. “We also have precut

trees available for folks that prefer a

ready-to-go tree.”

A complementary cup of cocoa and a

Christmas cookie awaits guests and this

year the Rapps teamed up with R & B

Canned Goods–a local family business

based in Obetz–to offer vintage inspired

treats in keeping with the nostalgic “It’s

A Wonderful Life” theme.

Santa Claus will visit the farm on Dec.

4 from noon to 2 p.m. and a professional

photographer is available the first two

Sundays of the season to go out in the

field and capture tree cutting memories

for families.

Black, Owen Spencer, Brandon Hunter.

Lockbourne Council

Lockbourne Village Council meets the

second and fourth Mondays of each month

at 7 p.m. Council meets in-person at the

Lockbourne Historical Hall at 206 Vause

St., Lockbourne.

Franklin County Board of Commissioners: President Kevin L. Boyce • Commissioner John O’Grady, and Commissioner Erica C. Crawley

The Franklin County Board of Commissioners and The Franklin County Office on Aging join with the Messenger Newspaper in providing this update on aging issues in Franklin County.

Financial Exploitation

What is financial exploitation, and do you know the signs? The Franklin

County Office on Aging has launched an educational and preventative

campaign centered around financial exploitation among older adults.

Financial exploitation is a form of elder abuse that is not uncommon. It is

so common in fact that the National Conference of State Legislatures

revealed that “the number of bills introduced by state legislators to combat

elder financial exploitation increased by more than 57 percent in three

years”. Franklin County residents are not immune to elder abuse, and as

the population of older adults increases, consequently financial exploitation

will increase as well. In 2020, there was a total of 1,560 cases investigated

by the Franklin County Office on Aging’s Adult Protective Services,

with almost 40 percent of these cases involving some form of exploitation

of the older adult, accompanied by emotional and verbal abuse along with

neglect.

Financial exploitation is most often associated with the stealing of cash or

an individual persuading another to give money to a false cause, however,

there is so much more. According to the United States Department of

Justice, “Financial exploitation means the illegal or improper use, control

over, or withholding of the property, income, resources, or trust funds of

the elderly person or the vulnerable adult by any person or entity for any

person's or entity's profit or advantage other than for the elder person or

the vulnerable adult's profit or advantage”. So, while financial exploitation

can take on many different forms, the deception can also happen by

anyone.

Often abuse, including financial exploitation, is underreported due to the

feelings of embarrassment and fear. The National Adult Protective

Services Association found that “only one in 44 cases of financial abuse is

ever reported”. It is the responsibility of mandated reporters, family,

friends, caregivers, and any other person that interacts with an older adult,

to remain alert for the signs of financial exploitation. Signs can include

but are not limited to

• A person who becomes suddenly interested in the older

adult and/or the older adult’s finances

• Decreased contact between the older adult and their famil

and friends

• Hesitancy to sharing information with family or friends

• Missing funds from an older adult’s bank account or

missing funds or valuable items from around the home

• Unexplained transactions, transfers, or gifts given by the

older adult

Although knowing the warning signs can be extremely helpful in ending

ongoing financial exploitation, there are some preventative measures that

older adults can take to not fall victim to this form of abuse. The American

Bankers Association suggests that older adults “Shred receipts, bank

statements and unused credit card offers, never give out personal

information, including social security number, account number, or

financial information to anyone over the phone, order copies of your

credit report once a year to ensure accuracy, and build a relationship with

the people who handle your finances”. These small steps can potentially

save an older adult thousands of dollars, their homes, savings, and

heartache.

If you suspect you or an older adult you know is being financially

exploited, please call the Franklin County Office on Aging’s Adult

Protective Services at 614-525-4348. All calls to Adult Protective

Services are confidential.

Obetz Historians progressing

By Katelyn Sattler

Staff Writer

The Obetz Historians, a group seeking

to preserve the town’s history, met for the

third time and now has not one, but two

new treasurers.

Becci Thacker-Dunn was elected treasurer

in absentia at the group’s Nov. 9 meeting.

The second treasurer, elected to act as

a back-up to Thacker-Dunn, is Diane

Brooker. Initially, the group thought both

treasurers would be needed to sign checks

and other financial documents the group

might need, but then decided President

Joyce Jones Blake could act as a signatory

along with Thacker-Dunn.

The group also discussed where to house

the historical artifacts the group is beginning

If your child knocks out a tooth

naturally be comforting the child,

but saving the tooth should also

be an important element in this

First, try to find the tooth after it

artifacts in the city’s municipal building,

“access to the building is through the

garage, so it might not be ideal,” said Jones

The group is open to suggestions from

the community as to where to store the

a club that is out there trying to make

things better, helping in any way needed.

We also want to promote a positive image

for bikers.”

While motorcycle clubs often get a bad

reputation, the Iron Brothers hope they are

helping to change that image by their service

and involvement in the community.

When they opened their doors, they invited

local residents inside and provided dinner.

On Halloween, they passed out candy to

Lockbourne’s little ghosts and goblins.

Roberts said the first thing every member

has is a responsibility in their everyday

activities to promote and reflect a good

image on the club.

“We ride responsibly, we offer help to

anyone who needs or asks for it,” said

Roberts. “We found a club house in a community

that we think we can grow with

and build our relationships. We also deliver

Thanksgiving meals every year to about

twenty families in need. We first reached

out to the community of Lockbourne for

anyone in need. We will never do anything

to tarnish the reputation of the Iron

Brothers.”

In looking to grow their membership,

Roberts welcomes interested individuals to

reach out to a members and come to a

meeting.

“This way they can meet us and see

what we are about,” said Roberts. “We

would go from there in determining if it is

something in which they are interested. We

enjoy what we do, the people we get to

meet, the new relationships, and just seeing

a smile on someone’s face.”

“They give money to local organizations

for purposes of community improvement,”

he said.

Bonnie Wiley said the BWACIC has

officers and lawyers. They collect money

from TIFs to fund community improvement.

Benson and Jones Blake will have a

Davisson, and Obetz Mayor Angela Kirk to

see if the BWACIC would fund the project

and also to provide information about

buildings that could be used to house the

historical artifacts they find and also copyright

as it concerns Obetz.

Benson proposed conducting tours

charging people to go through as a way to

raise funds for the project.

The Obetz Historians would also like to

advertise for free at community events,

like the Zucchinifest, to reduce the amount

spent in advertising.

They hope to establish the Obetz

Historians as a 501(c)(3). Jones has sent

an email to the Secretary of State’s office to

get information on how to do that.

The next meeting of the Obetz

Historians will be Dec. 8 at 6 p.m. at the

Obetz Community Center, 1650 Obetz

Road. Anyone interested in their projects

is invited to attend.

One of my favorite plants in my backyard are my

peonies.

Each May I look forward to seeing the peonies’ big,

bright blooms of white and pink. The blooms do not

last long, but while they are in full flower they are a

sight to behold.

After the blooms fade, the peonies’ bushy leaves

remain a nice green hue all summer. As the cooler

days of autumn roll in, these once fresh green leaves

turn brown and the stems bend a bit after their season

in the sun.

I’m always a little sad when the time comes in the

fall to cut the peonies’ stems off to prepare the peonies

for their winter sleep. The peonies are a familiar friend

and it is a bit melancholy for me to see them go. But it

is one of those annual autumnal tasks that must be

done.

For decades each October, I have just used the lawn

mower to mow down the dry, brown remnants of the

glorious peonies. But this year it struck me that cutting

them this way just did not feel right. Brutally

mowing them down with the unrelenting cold, hard

whirling blade of the roaring lawn mower did not seem

like the proper way to say goodbye to my peonies

friends for the winter.

So this year I took a pair of

hand clippers and gingerly

snipped, close to the ground, each

individual stem, one by one, of

my long row of peonies. It felt

more quiet. It felt reverent. It felt

kinder. It felt like I was taking

proper, gentle care of my old

friends.

The peonies’ bed is vacant and

bare now as only small stubbles

remain. But throughout the coming

winter the brown ground provides

the promise of the fresh

shoots of peonies that will appear

in the early soft, spring ground and the welcoming

blooms to follow next May.
