Taliban, Bellis trust
forged over cricket
Thursday November 18 2021 The Star
NEWS 3
in brief
Crash victims named
The three people who died in
a crash involving a milk tanker
and a car in North Canterbury
on Sunday have been named.
Jixuan Yin, 67, Ying Wan, 48,
and Guhan (Caroline) Yin,
8, all of Christchurch, died
after the vehicle they were in
crashed at the intersection of
South Eyre Rd and Burnt Hill
Rd, south of Oxford around
6.35pm. The fourth occupant
of the car, a teenage boy, was
in Christchurch hospital in
stable condition yesterday. The
investigation into the crash is
ongoing.
TALKING CRICKET: Kiwi journalist Charlotte Bellis says Kane Williamson is a name dropped a lot by her Taliban contacts.
PHOTOS: GETTY/NZ HERALD
CHRISTCHURCH journalist
Charlotte Bellis has revealed
what helped her win the trust
of the Taliban in Afghanistan:
Cricket.
Bellis has become a household
name for her reporting of the
Taliban takeover for international
TV network Al Jazeera.
Her memorable coverage has
included the evacuation of Kabul
and gun-toting Taliban fighters
posing for her at the end of the
runway as the last American
plane flew into the night.
Now in an extensive interview
in The Listener, Bellis, a former St
Margaret’s College student, talks
about how she has formed a good
relationship with the Taliban,
who are not known for their
favourable treatment of women.
It began in 2019 when Bellis
was covering peace negotiations
between the Taliban and the
United States in Doha, Qatar
– where Al Jazeera has its headquarters.
“I staked out their meetings,
IN CONTROL: Taliban members pose for a photo after they
took over Panjshir Valley. PHOTO: GETTY/NZ HERALD
and would smile and wave
as they went by. And then I
eventually got the courage to
go up to one of the spokesmen
who I knew spoke English and
introduce myself. We would
talk every few days, and I got his
number,” she told The Listener.
“And then we would joke
around and we would talk about
the cricket. I love cricket.”
Bellis is a former TVNZ cricket
reporter. During the 2019 Cricket
World Cup, she watched the
games on her mobile while staking
out the Taliban’s peace talks.
“They would run out of their
meetings and come down to me
and say, ‘What’s the score?’ And
that was a great bonding moment.”
Brendon McCullum and Kane
Williamson are names often
dropped by her Taliban contacts.
“They know a lot. I’ve heard the
names of half the first XI in the
past few months.”
Then last year, she was engaged
by Netflix to produce a documentary
on the Taliban.
“The Netflix director gave
me a shopping list of people he
wanted, including top Taliban
leaders. And I thought this was
a big ask, to convince them that
they should talk to me for a
three-hour sit-down interview,”
she said.
She approached a couple of
people she knew, who put her in
contact with some of the names
on the list. One person in particular
made it clear he needed to
know whether he could trust her.
“We spent months having
lunch and tea, and talking and
debating Taliban policies and
things that had happened in his
life, until the point where he said,
‘Okay, I trust you, and I’ll do the
interview’.”
Since then, she has developed
a strong relationship with key
figures. They did, however, draw
the line at her suggestion last
year that they pop over to her
apartment for a Christmas party.
“They said it might be
awkward to come to a Christmas
party with the Afghan
government and the Americans.”
Rubbish fight results
in alleged knife
attack
A fight that broke out after a
row over rubbish has ended
in a woman allegedly being
punched in the face and others
slashed by a man wielding a
knife in Sydenham yesterday
morning. Police confirmed one
person was taken into custody
and another required medical
attention. The altercation
happened at a block of flats on
Karoro Lane. It is not the first
act of violence at the location
this year. A 28-year-old was
arrested and charged with
murder in April.
Double dose of
Christmas magic
The Christchurch City Mission,
with the help of Vodafone
Business, is creating a Festive
Photo Pop-Up outside
the Riverside Market. The
Christmas-themed photo
backdrop will be open from
Saturday, 4 December, then
on selected dates throughout
December. Also back this year
is the City Mission’s Christmas
Tree, which will be installed
in front of the Bridge of
Remembrance. The tree will
be three-times brighter, with
a dazzling new computercontrolled
light display. It is
a thank you from the City
Sheds lost in fire: ‘Hedge
• By Susan Sandys
“FIRE, FIRE,” came the call
from Danny Morris’ son. Morris
ran outside, and within minutes
he was fighting to save his home.
The fierce blaze on a lifestyle
block near Lincoln is believed to
have started from a homemade
barbecue, which Morris had lit
to celebrate his son Zechariah’s
eighth birthday.
People at the scene frantically
got vehicles out of the way as
explosions rattled around them.
Eight fire appliances and crews
attended. A work shed and a
farm shed were destroyed, along
with a tractor, caravan, van,
forklift and car.
Morris lost about $30,000 of
vehicles and equipment stored
in the work shed. He was not
insured. However, when he considers
the ferocity and speed of
the blaze, he feels blessed.
“It would have gone up like a
blooming fire cracker,” he said of
the home, where he lives with his
wife and four children.
The reason it didn’t was due
to the “tremendous” work of
firefighters, and luck. He said
while the weatherboard villa’s
window exploded, paint blistered
and spouting melted, the fire did
not penetrate the wall near the
blaze as this area happened to be
SURREAL: Danny Morris can’t believe how quickly the ferocious blaze took hold.
inflammable fibrolite.
He said the ordeal began about
4pm on Tuesday as he was preparing
to hold the birthday barbecue
outside. About 15min after
he lit a few pieces of gum timber
in a steel square wheelbarrow
and the flames quelled, ready for
him to put a steel grate on top, he
went inside to wash his hands.
That was when he heard his
son yelling and he ran outside.
“I couldn’t even see the fire,
I thought he was joking, I was
about to tell him off,” Morris
said.
But he soon saw what Zechariah
was looking at – flames
in a hedge about 5m away. He
believed wind which had rapidly
come up had all of a sudden carried
a spark to the hedge.
He cranked up a water blaster,
but the fire “just took off.”
“As I was fighting it, it was so
surreal, how the hell did we end
up here?” he said.
Passing motorists stopped to
help, while his wife, neighbours
and others phoned 111. As firefighters
got to work, he stayed at
the scene for a while, “watching
in disbelief.”
Morris said he was proud of
Zechariah for raising the alarm,
and moving his little two-yearold
brother as the family shifted
to safety.
Morris sells firewood and
makes furniture. The items lost
included woodworking gear, tree
cutting gear and machines, a
forklift, welders, and a small car
he was working on. They were
in the work shed on the lifestyle
block on Greenpark Rd, which
he and his family rented.
“I’m feeling pretty blessed,
I’ve got good people around, my
family is safe.”
One of the passing motorists
was Kerry Cameron of
Springston. He leant a hand by
driving a car out of a driveway.
was like a can of petrol’
He described the frantic efforts
of others at the scene as there
were small explosions and the
blaze moved into the farm shed.
A couple of men managed to push
a horse float out of the way, but
could not start a tractor next to
a caravan, so both of these were
destroyed.
Lincoln chief fire officer Jeremy
Greenwood said the fire was
fanned by strong winds. It quickly
spread from the macrocarpa
hedge to the farm buildings and
came within 2m of the house.
“We managed to stop it spreading
to the house,” said Greenwood.
“We saved the house.”
Greenwood said the macrocarpa
hedge was “like a can of
Firefighters had the fire under
four hours at the scene.
New mosque terror report reveals
• By Kurt Bayer
THE FAST-thinking, coolheaded
actions of the first
police officers at the Al Noor
mosque mass shooting have been
praised in a US expert’s review
of the medical response to New
Zealand’s worst terror attack.
The officers, who entered the
Christchurch mosque 15min
after the Australian terrorist
opened fire, eventually shooting
dead 42 dead before driving
across the city and killing nine
more at Linwood Islamic Centre,
were met with a bloody, distressing
and chaotic scene.
They quickly, and “rightfully”,
identified survivors and
prioritised securing a corridor of
access for ambulance personnel,
according to a new report by an
American professor of emergency
medicine at the University
of Minnesota, which has been
prepared to help with the coronial
inquiry into the March 15,
2019, attacks.
Amid the chaos, the first officers
came across a backpack
thought to have been a bomb, it’s
been revealed for the first time.
And then everyone was ordered
to “get down” after fears of
a possible second gunman. Later,
as ambulance staff were getting
to the victims, the response
operation was temporarily
frozen when delayed livestream
video implied that the shooter
was returning to the Deans Ave
mosque.
The first police officers on the
scene of the mass terror attack
have been praised for their quick
actions.
“Despite the chaos and multiple
hazards, the police are to be
commended for an extremely
rapid securing of the scene for
medical personnel as well as
for starting the assessment of
victims and providing initial
care including chest seals and
bleeding control,” says Dr John
Hick, who has been involved in
improving medical responses to
terrorist attacks, mass shootings
and other disasters for more than
20 years.
“This greatly accelerated the
work of ambulance personnel
and likely saved lives.”
The 14-page
report, which
references
the Mumbai
terrorist
attacks,
and mass
shootings
at Pulse
Nightclub
in Orlando,
John Hick
Florida, and Century 16 movie
theatre in Aurora, Colorado,
provides incredible detail of the
emergency services’ response
on March 15, 2019, calling on
police, St John and medical
examiner reports, hospital
records, photographs and
radiologic images.
Four police officers and two
ambulance personnel who
formed “entry teams” to assess
and move victims were praised
for the move, in spite of it not
seeming to have been part of
advance planning.
It also helped that two senior
supervisors from police and ambulance
recognised each other
on scene in the early minutes
and established a plan of ambulance
personnel entry.
“It is fortunate that this
relationship existed and could
be rapidly leveraged to gain
ambulance personnel access,”
Hick said.
“The officers are to be
further commended for asking
ambulance personnel to triage
based on ‘alive or dead’, which
saved valuable time.”
The rapid securing of the
scene and priority on ambulance
personnel access and correct prioritisation
of triage assessments
and transportation “all certainly
contributed to lives saved”.
It took just 33 minutes from
when the first ambulance arrived
at the mosque to have all patients
ready for transport. Hick said
that was “exceptional” and “far
faster than most incidents of mass
violence”.
During the response, 18
ambulances were used and seven
rapid response vehicles, five
supervisor, and two mass casualty
incident units responded.
Twenty-five patients were
transported by ambulance.
And the fact that 14 victims
were earlier transported
by private vehicles “with
encouragement by police
personnel” was also best practice,
Hick said, noting some US cities
encourage police transport
of shooting victims when
ambulances are not immediately
available.
Christchurch Hospital was
also commended for its response,
especially given it rarely sees
penetrating trauma, and on
March 15 received 48 gunshot
injuries in less than 45 minutes.
Twelve patients received
immediate operations for lifesaving
procedures, including
a child who arrived by private
vehicle on the verge of cardiac
arrest and was able to survive
with immediate resuscitation and
surgery.
“This case is clearly a welcome
exception to expected outcomes
and is a credit to both her age,
time to transport to a trauma
centre (the child was immediately
carried from the mosque and
placed in a car with arrival at the
hospital minutes later), and the
availability of skilled physicians
and surgeons,” Hick said.
The vast majority of the injuries
were non-survivable, Hick found.
None of the deaths of patients
who were alive on police arrival
could have been averted with onscene
interventions, he said.
“All of the deaths were expected
based on the gravity of the
injuries,” he concluded.
COURT proceedings involving
a high-profile Canterbury
harness racing figure caught
up in a major police probe into
corruption and drug use in the
industry has been delayed again.
The person was scheduled
to appear in the district court
tomorrow, but the hearing has
been tentatively pushed back
to February 11. The person had
also been expected to appear in
court on July 16.
Suppression orders prevent
the person being identified. The
charges faced are also subject to
suppression orders.
But The Star is aware a key
part of the court proceedings is
a bid by the defendant, and others
in the industry also before
the courts, to stop the police
racing investigators.
Their lawyers have been arguing
points of law to stop the
evidence accessed by the Racing
Integrity Board, which has the
power to prosecute under racing
rules. The penalties can be
severe, including lengthy bans
from the sport.
But a decision on whether that
evidence can be accessed by the
RIB remains with Judge Raoul
Neave who has yet to release his
judgement after lengthy
legal arguments.
The police investigation,
dubbed Operation
Inca, charged 13 people
in September, 2018 following
raids on harness
racing stables in Canterbury
and Auckland.
It was overseen by the
National Organised
Covid for Christmas: Fears the virus
PUBLIC HEALTH experts fear
protections for the South Island
from Aucklanders spreading
Covid-19 do not go far enough
and cases will crop up all over
the country over summer.
Canterbury
University
professor and
Covid-19
modeller
Michael
Plank said
the Auckland
boundary
Michael Plank
was always
a stop-gap
measure to delay the spread of
the virus to other parts of New
Zealand while vaccination rates
improved.
But the timing of opening up
the boundary on December 15,
two weeks after the country was
likely to move to the new ‘traffic
light’ system, meant there was a
risk that new cases could be high
and rising at that time.
Plank’s concern dovetailed
with Covid-19 returning to
Christchurch yesterday with
a positive case related to an
Auckland tangi revealed as the
Government released details on
how residents of New Zealand’s
largest city can head south.
The Ministry of Health said
the person, who returned to
Christchurch on November
13 on flight NZ1295, became
symptomatic on Sunday and
undertook a test on Monday.
They live in a household of six
people, who are self-isolating
pending their test results.
It is the first confirmed case in
the city since a woman
and man tested positive
after travelling from
Auckland three weeks
ago.
Passengers on the flight
were advised to monitor
for symptoms over the
next 10 days and get
tested as a precaution.
Prime Minister Jacinda
Ardern yesterday said New Zealand
is expected to move to the
‘traffic light’ system soon after
November 29.
The Auckland boundary is expected
to open up for vaccinated
people or those who tested negative
72 hours before departing
the city from December 15.
Air New Zealand said the
status of travellers would
be reviewed at the checkin
stage at Auckland
airport.
Plank said the Auckland
border opening 10
days before Christmas
ensured cases would
crop up all over the
country over the summer,
regardless of preventative
measures.
‘‘People leaving Auckland will
have to be either fully vaccinated
Jacinda Ardern
or to test negative in the 72 hours
before departure. This will
reduce the number of infectious
people travelling around the
country but, since neither vaccination
nor testing is a 100 per
cent guarantee, it won’t prevent it
altogether,” he said.
“In addition, around one in
five cases in the current outbreak
has been in under-12s who are
not eligible for the vaccine and
are exempt from the testing
requirement.’
‘‘Where these cases land in
highly-vaccinated communities,
it’s likely the virus will hit a dead
end and fizzle out. But cases
that find their way into undervaccinated
communities will be
able to spark serious outbreaks.”
Professor Nick Wilson, from
the University of Otago’s department
of public health, wanted
stronger attempts at keeping the
Covid-19 outbreak contained
to Auckland and to stamp out
outbreaks in various parts of the
North Island.
“This could give the rest of the
country more weeks or months
to get vaccinated, to get boosters,
to vaccinate five to 11 year-olds,
to improve access to anti-viral
medicines, and to make ventilation
upgrades to buildings,’’ he
said.
While it was ‘‘very good’’ the
Government was planning on
some border protection, Wilson
said it should include other
requirements such as a negative
rapid antigen test result at the
point of boarding a flight or ferry
to the South Island.
Meanwhile, the system that
allows fully vaccinated people
to request their vaccine pass or
certificate went live yesterday
and was quickly overwhelmed in
spite of being able to produce 200
certificates per second.
The Ministry of Health also
confirmed the death of a man in
his 60s on Tuesday. He had been
admitted to North Shore Hospital
on November 4 with Covid
symptoms and subsequently
tested positive.
KORU NUTRITION
Having worked in health
and nutrition herself for
years, Barbara intimately
knew the inner workings of
the industry. Whilst retired
now, she still likes to keep
a close eye on what’s going
on.
“As everyone knows, our
bodies need to be treated
well. They are amazing
things that require good
nutrients and exercise if
we want them to work at
their best. I am not afraid
of trying new things if I can
see that they are of a high
quality and worthwhile.”
Very early on, Barbara
stumbled upon and became
a convert of the rewarding
and scientifically researched
qualities of Deer Velvet; a
seemingly well kept secret.
As a successful saleswoman
in the industry she already
knew it supports immune
health, blood circulation,
energy levels, and healthy
joints and muscles.
Not too long ago, after
years of taking Deer Velvet,
her personal supply ran out.
“I went to order something
else online and that is when
I saw the Koru Deer Velvet.
I had heard about Koru
Nutrition from a friend who
absolutely loved using Koru
FX joint support cream.
When I saw Koru Nutrition
had Deer Velvet, I had to
check it out. With 500mg
per tablet, a good price,
Koru Deer Velvet ticked all
of my boxes so I thought I
would try it.”
Deer Velvet has been
scientifically shown to
support: energy, immune
health, joint mobility,
healthy cholesterol levels,
healthy blood pressure,
and muscles. It is a unique
superfood, rich in protein,
growth factors and lipids
and contains forty key
compounds.
Barbara loves the fact that
she as a mature woman
has energy to go for long
brisk walks along the local
beach with her friends
and still have breath for
conversation.
“I tell you what, I won’t
Reporters Emily
Moorhouse and
Kristie Boland asked
Christchurch residents
if they were surprised
Covid-19 had returned
to the city yesterday
and whether the
Government should
open the border with
Auckland on December
15. Opinion was divided
Bianca Shan: I’m surprised
[about the new case] because
I thought there were stricter
border rules in place. I thought
we would be okay down here
because of the restrictions in
place. For the time being I don’t
think people should travel from
Auckland because there’s new
cases there everyday so it could
spread here. I think it’s quite sad.
A lot of people will be angry.
Andrew Moorhouse:
It was bound to happen. I
think Auckland has hit their
vaccination rate so I think it’s
fair enough that they should be
able to travel.
Marie Harvey: I’m not too
happy about it, it’s concerning.
People from Auckland shouldn’t
travel around because it could
Mikaella
Fesway
Brendon
Moir
spread the virus which would
mean unnecessary lockdowns.
Mikaella Fesway: I don’t think
people from Auckland should
travel because they have lots of
cases.
Ann Noonan: I was waiting
for it to happen, I was expecting
it. People in Auckland are
frustrated. They don’t see an
end. Some people are looking
too much on social media for
information.
Eldar Akhmetor: That would
concern me [the new case], there
are so many people gathering
around. I think there should be
restrictions and people should
have to have tests before they leave.
Brendon Moir: I’d hope
people would be more careful
with making sure they scan and
wear masks. I think we’ve got
complacent. I think it is going to
come to the South Island so the
more people that get vaccinated
the better.
Darin
McLennan
Andrew
Dean
Darin McLennan: Yeah
it does concern me, it’s the
complacency of people. You’d
hope people do the right thing
and scan, wear masks and get
vaccinated, but you can’t know.
It’s a little worrying having
people travel here but you can’t
stop it forever.
Jemma Lumb: It concerns me
because if we go into lockdown
I can’t go shopping and see my
friends and family.
Andrew Dean: I’m not
concerned because I’m fully
vaccinated. People should be able
to travel from Auckland if they
are fully vaccinated.
Elisabeth Qausila: I’m not
really concerned if it’s just
an isolated case because I’m
vaccinated. I’d probably just be
worried about what that means
in terms of lockdowns. People
probably shouldn’t be able to
travel down here from Auckland
during the busy holiday period.
Elisa
Katernoza
Elisabeth
Qausila
Elisa Katernoza: I’m not really
concerned if it’s just one case.
People from Auckland probably
Andrew
Moorhouse
Eldar
Akhmetor
shouldn’t be able to travel down
here because their cases are
pretty high.
COVID-19: A new case in Christchurch was announced
Suction tank blows out $3.4 million
• By Fiona Ellis
A PRICE hike of $3.4 million on
a long-delayed water storage tank
project in the heart of Fendalton is
being criticised as “far too high”.
The budget for the planned
Jeffreys Reserve project has increased
to $6.02 million, up from
$2.6 million in 2019, the city
council confirmed last week.
Head of Three Waters and
Waste Helen Beaumont said
the increased price tag was due
to the increased scope of the
project.
However,
Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood
Community
Board member
and Waimairi
Ward councillor
Sam
MacDonald
Sam MacDonald
said he was unhappy
with the
price.
“It just seems an extraordinary
amount of money to have increased
in that amount of time,”
MacDonald said.
The project will see the current
200m3 earthquake-damaged
tank, which supplies water to
the north-west of Christchurch,
replaced with a 500m3 tank.
Beaumont said the additional
scope of the project would include
developing new wells, new
pumps, an increase in tank size,
an electrical upgrade, security
fencing and tank cladding, and
additional planning and design
costs caused by lengthy community
consultation.
“This is a significant project . . .
to increase capacity, improve the
security of supply, and meet the
increased requirements of the
regulatory framework,” Beaumont
said.
Construction is due to start in
March next year, with the city
council currently looking for a
contractor to carry it out.
Planning for the project began
in 2017, with work initially intended
to be completed by June 2018.
The project is now expected to
be completed in March 2023.
Adjusting the design to satisfy
the community board and pausing
the design to learn from the
construction of Bexley’s Ben
Rarere pump was the cause of
the delay, Beaumont said.
MacDonald said the design
was a compromise with the local
community, with residents criticising
earlier conceptions.
“By the nature of this stuff,
you’re never going to please
everybody but at the same time, I
think people began to appreciate
we’d gotten the best compromise
we could,” he said.
PRICE HIKE:
project, due to
“It does prove that the council
is investing properly in its
infrastructure . . . it’s going to be
a long-term asset for the community
to ensure that we have
good water.
“Don’t get me wrong, I’m still
not happy with the price.”
The city council declined
to provide a cost breakdown
yesterday, citing commercial
sensitivities.
‘Booming’ barley grass poses risk to dogs
• By Chris Barclay
PENNY WRIGHT occasionally
lets her beloved Kona romp
around Bexley Park, but is sure
to keep the fox terrier on a tight
lead.
Wright’s caution is justified as
the retired vet is acutely aware
of the dangers posed by barley
grass.
It is so prevalent at the popular
dog park she has put up warning
signs for unsuspecting owners,
claiming the city council is not
doing enough to control the grass.
Barley grass long-tailed seeds
can migrate through a dog’s
coat, skin and ear canal to cause
serious health issues.
“If it gets into the middle ear
it can be very painful and affect
their hearing. It can certainly do
some damage,” Wright said.
They can cause a weeping
wound and swelling if they
penetrate through the paws. The
awns also cling to animal hair
and only move forward – and
burrow in – due to the fine barbs
on each seed.
“I’ve done extensive surgeries
tracking barley grass through
dog’s bodies. One procedure
took four hours, the incision was
over 18 inches long,” she said.
When she moved to North
New Brighton two years ago,
Wright checked out dog parks
in the vicinity: Bexley, Rawhiti
DANGER ZONE: Retired vet Penny Wright has put up posters at Bexley Park warning dog owners about the health risks of
barley grass.
Domain and Horseshoe Lake.
She realised barley grass was
an issue and alerted the city
council, as she had previously
done with Waimakariri District
Council staff when living in
North Canterbury.
“They sent out a ranger (in
2019), emailed them some
photos and nothing has
happened,” she said.
“I could see there was a problem
and this year it’s booming.
It’s at a height where a medium
to large dog runs through that
grass at face level.”
Wright said the best solution
was to rip out barley grass.
“It’s an annual so it’s very shallow
rooted. Pulling them out is by
far the easiest solution. Just throw
them in a sack and burn them.
“The worst thing you can do
is just mow it. It just scatters the
seed further.”
The city council’s community
parks manager Al Hardy said
rangers control the barley grass
at the Bexley dog park on an
annual basis, with the most
treatment survey
Have you been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer?
By completing this ten-minute, anonymous survey about a particular medication
treatment used in pancreatic cancer, you may be able to help us identify better access
to treatments for all New Zealanders with pancreatic cancer.
We want to use this survey to identify who has been offered Pancreatic Enzyme
Replacement Therapy (PERT). The pancreas is important in digestion and PERT is a
treatment that can help people with pancreatic cancer digest their kai.
We have little information in Aotearoa New Zealand about who is being offered this
medicine and how it is being taken. Our goal is to identify who does and does not
have access to this treatment and how we might improve access to those who need it.
This national survey is being conducted by investigators at the University of Otago.
The survey has been approved by a Human Research Ethics Committee.
My Vaccine Pass: All you need to know
The My Vaccine Pass,
launched yesterday,
is an official record of
Covid-19 vaccination
status, allowing access
to things like concerts,
festivals, gyms and
sports events, as per the
new Covid protection
framework. Here’s all
you need to know
How do I get My Vaccine
Pass?
Once you are fully vaccinated,
sign up to My Covid Record –
www.mycovidrecord.nz – to
see your vaccination status and
request a pass. Your My Vaccine
Pass will include your name,
date of birth and a QR code. You
can save this pass on a digital
device, like your phone, or print
a physical copy.
If someone has a temporary
medical exemption, they can call
0800 222 478 to request a My
Vaccine Pass. They may be asked
a few things to confirm their
identity, such as their name and
date of birth.
Where will people need to use
My Vaccine Pass?
Under the Covid protection
framework, you will be required
to show My Vaccine Pass as
proof of vaccination status in
a range of public settings such
as events, hospitality, retail,
community, sport, and faithbased
gatherings.
Where do you not need to
show a My Vaccine Pass?
Under the Covid protection
framework, there are certain
settings where denying entry on
the basis of vaccination status
will be prohibited.
You do not have to show
proof of your vaccination
status to access supermarkets,
pharmacies, all health and
disability services, food banks
or petrol stations. Proof of
vaccination is also not required
in education settings, on all
public transport (other than
air travel) or when accessing
housing and housing support
services under state sector
agencies.
For children under the age of
12, there is no requirement to
show proof of vaccination.
Is there anyone who is unable
to get a My Vaccine Pass?
There are very few people
who are unable to get a vaccine
due to medical grounds. These
people who apply through the
Ministry of Health and receive
a temporary medical exemption
process will also be able to
receive a vaccine pass.
For children under the age of
12, there is no requirement to
show proof of vaccination.
When will booster shots be
included into the systems?
People will be able to book a
booster shot through Book My
Vaccine from November 26.
Once they have had a booster
shot, it will show up in their My
Covid Record along with their
other doses.
The date for a booster shot
to be included as criteria for
My Vaccine Pass as part of the
definition of “fully vaccinated”
is to be determined, requiring
further advice from CVTAG.
How long is My Vaccine Pass
valid for?
A person’s My Vaccine Pass is
valid for six months from date of
issue.
This is because booster shots
may be required to ensure
ongoing protection against
Covid, and because medical
exemptions are only valid for six
months. If vaccination passes
are still required after a pass has
expired, you will need to request
another one to prove your
vaccinations are current.
How do I get a My Vaccine
Pass if I don’t have a smart
phone, a computer or internet
access?
People without a smartphone
or access to a computer can call
0800 222 478 to request a My
Vaccine Pass. They need to have
a National Health Index (NHI)
number ready or may be asked
a few things to confirm their
identity, such as name and date
of birth. Someone can call for a
person on their behalf, but they
must have their permission.
What about 12-16 year-olds?
How will they access My
Vaccine Pass?
As of this week, 12-yearolds
and over can access My
Covid Record using my Health
Account.
What do people do who
share an email within their
household?
An individual email address
is required when requesting a
My Vaccine Pass via My Covid
Record because people have
different dates of birth and
different medical records. This
is common practice with digital
services. People who do not have
an individual email account can
register for their own unique
email address from one of the
free providers such as Gmail or
Hotmail. Alternatively, a person
can call the 0800 number and
request a My Vaccine Pass which
will then be mailed in hard copy
to their address.
How are you looking after my
privacy?
The vaccination certificates
are created from data held in the
Covid Immunisation Register
that records your Covid-19
vaccinations. The vaccination
certificate system has been
designed to keep your details
private, with vaccination proof
securely coded into the QR code.
Why do you show my age on
the pass?
Some businesses and
organisations might require
that ID is shown along with
your vaccination pass. This is
an important method to reduce
vaccination pass forgery.
How does someone get a
My Vaccine Pass if they don’t
have one of the six forms of ID
needed to sign up for My Covid
Record?
If someone has been
vaccinated but doesn’t have
an ID, they can call 0800 222
478 to request a My Vaccine
Pass. We suggest they have
their NHI number ready, but if
they don’t have it, we may ask a
few questions to confirm their
identity, such as name and date
of birth.
Can people coming from
overseas get a My Vaccine Pass?
A process is being established
to record Covid vaccinations
administered overseas in
the New Zealand Covid
Immunisation Register. We
can record all 23 vaccines that
are approved as per the New
Zealand entry requirements.
You must apply for this
information to be included in
your records. This will take up
to 14 days and people will need
to provide proof of the vaccines
and dates administered so they
can be entered into the Covid-19
Immunisation Register.
While all 23 vaccines can be
recorded, these do not mean
you will be eligible for the My
Vaccine Pass. At this stage, from
the week of November 26, there
are eight approved vaccines that
can be used as proof of vaccine
status when applying for My
Vaccine Pass.
They are:
1. Pfizer/BioNTech
2. Janssen (Johnson and
Johnson)
3. AstraZeneca (Oxford)
4. AstraZeneca/Covishield
(Serum Institute of India)
5. Moderna
6. Sinopharm
7. Sinovac (CoronaVac)
8. Covaxin (Bharat Biotech)
EXAMPLES: The My Vaccine Pass can be saved to a digital device or printed out.
Do I need a National Health
Index number to enter My
Covid Record and request My
Vaccine Pass?
You won’t need your NHI
number to log on to My Covid
Record, but you will need
an email address and a valid
identity document, such as a
birth certificate, driver’s licence
or passport issued in New
Zealand or Australia.
You can call 0800 222-478
to request a My Vaccine Pass.
Please have your NHI number
ready or if you don’t have it, we
may need to ask you a few things
to confirm your identity, such as
your name and date of birth.
How long will I need
an official record of my
vaccination status?
As part of the Covid protection
framework, you will need proof
of your vaccination status to
access public settings in New
Zealand until further notice.
This is to help ensure we are
reducing the risk of the virus
spreading at large gatherings and
events over the summer and into
next year.
It’s anticipated that the
need for proof of a vaccine
certification when travelling
internationally will be in place
for years to come.
When will international
vaccine certificates be available?
International vaccine
certificates can be requested now.
If you are using the call centre,
it’s recommended you request
a certificate a week or so before
the date you intend to travel
overseas. The certificates have an
expiry date of one year.
You should sign up for My
Covid Record now to ensure you
can create certificates and are
ready to go.
How can I know the
international certificate will
be accepted by my country of
destination?
You should check the
requirements of the country
you’re travelling to and find out
what proof of vaccination, if any,
is needed.
You will need to follow all the
usual immigration processes
and additional steps, such as predeparture
Covid-19 testing.
Consult the official website or
the nearest embassy/consulate
of your country or territory of
destination to find out about any
border controls that may apply to
you before travelling.
How is this different from My
Vaccine Pass?
You will receive a separate
QR code for your international
vaccine certificate. These
certificates will be recognised by
international jurisdictions and
are for travel purposes only.
How is this different form the
Ministry of Health “Proof of
Vaccine” letter I requested and
received?
If you’ve already received a
vaccination confirmation letter
from the Ministry of Health you
can still use this for international
travel, but to ensure the country
you are travelling to recognises
your proof of vaccination status
we recommend you request an
International Travel Vaccination
Certificate, and the easiest way to
request this is through My Covid
Record.
Which countries will accept
New Zealand’s international
travel vaccine certificate?
International vaccine
certificates from New Zealand
are recognised as part of the
EU Digital Covid Certificate,
as announced on November 15.
This now means New Zealand
certificates may be used as proof
of vaccine when entering 49
countries, with more countries
expected to come.
For more information of the
EUDCC visit: ec.europa.eu/info/
live-work-travel-eu/coronavirus-
response/safe-Covid-19-
Covid-certificate_en
EUDCC formatted certificates,
including New Zealand’s, are
being widely recognised by
countries outside the EUDCC
system, including Australia and
the United States.
Can I download the
international certificate on my
phone or is it print only?
Yes, you can receive a digital
version via email that you can
save on your phone. Please note
that the international certificate
cannot yet be added to Apple
Wallet or Google Pay – you must
either have the downloaded copy
of the PDF on your phone or
have printed a copy.
OUR PEOPLE – BRAD RAVEN
Mastering the needle: A lifetime of tattooing,
Brad Raven’s journey
through life is mirrored
by the images he inks
onto clients in the
serene confines of his
Bryndwr studio, and the
art work fading from
view on his own body.
A career tattoo artist,
the 47-year-old works
through his labour of
love with Chris Barclay
When did you grit your teeth
for your first tattoo? What was
the motivation?
I always had a fascination with
tattoos and art. I come from a
family of artists, drawing was
just a natural thing for me. I was
14 when I tattooed a web on my
hand using a needle and Indian
ink. I got in a lot of trouble for
that one. Mum said ‘If you wait
until you’re 17, I’ll pay for you
to get a tattoo’. I got three done
for my birthday. I pretty much
started picking up tattooing the
next day and I’ve never stopped.
When I saw I could actually
draw on people and it would be
permanent, that was the clincher.
What was the design of the
first tattoo you had done in the
legendary Len Brownie’s studio
down Colombo St?
It was kind of a candle with
smoke and a wizard’s face. Total
‘90s art, really cheesy. It’s gone
(covered up/lasered) now. I was
one of those kids that was into
heavy metal music, the dark
imagery really appealed to me
back then . . . skulls, demons,
that kind of thing. I was on that
route initially.
Was it easy to make your
mark, as it were, in your own
studio?
Len gave me some advice and
I opened a studio in 1993 when
I was 22. Tattoos weren’t very
popular back then. There were
three studios in Christchurch,
now there’s over 50. Tattooing
was very underground, very old
school. You had to be brave to
step into a studio back in the
day. There was one in Addington
with bullet holes in the windows.
That’s kind of how they were.
NEEDLE WORK: New technology makes Brad Raven’s job less painful for him – and his
client – when working in his Bryndwr studio (below).
Tattooing can be an art form
indelibly to crime, organised or
otherwise, can’t it?
For the longest time tattoos
were marks of criminals and
sailors, workers. But if you go
back a hundred years before that
it was royalty getting tattooed,
high society. It wasn’t an art for
common people. Now there’s less
of a criminal element. Criminals
definitely get tattooed, but they
don’t really get tattooed in
professional studios now.
From a health perspective,
is tattooing safer now than it
was when you opened your first
INDELIBLE MEMORY:
Brad Raven inked a web
on his hand when he was
14 years-old, the first of a
countless number of art
works adorning the tattoo
artist’s body. He went on to
open his first studio at 22.
studio at 697 Gloucester St?
Yes, as far as equipment goes.
Everything’s disposable. There’s
a very low risk of contamination
now. I wear gloves for every
part of the process and probably
wash my hands and sanitise 40
times a day. Everything I need to
touch – lamps, tables – is covered
by a disposable contamination
barrier.
Can you remember your
first client, the first person you
tattooed?
It was my cousin. We did
some really horrible tattoos on
each other. From there, friends
were willing to be tattooed. I’d
practise on them.
Do traditional techniques
still apply today?
There’s different techniques,
but it comes down to three
things: line work, shading and
colour. Generally the majority of
tattoos have a structured outline
around the design, usually in
black. Then you’ll have shading
to give you your shadows and
contrasts. Then colours if it’s a
colour piece.
How difficult was it to master
those techniques from scratch?
When I started tattooists
‘Through the ‘90s to the
late 2000s, it was the wild
west. Everyone wanted to
be a rockstar. You’d get
crazy clients. They’d walk
in, pick a design and get
tattooed on the spot.’
– Brad Raven
wouldn’t talk about techniques,
they kept it closely guarded for
fear of losing business. There was
a book, The A to Z of Tattooing
by Huck Spaulding. He was a
legend in the ‘60s. No tattooist
would give it to you but I
managed to get a copy. With the
advent of the internet, it opened
everything up. I contacted a
lot of artists overseas and we’d
bounce ideas off each other.
Because you were overseas you
were no threat to them.
Eventually you went abroad
to expand your portfolio.
I went to Brisbane when I
was 24, for 15 years. I walked
into an amazing job at Wild at
Heart with a world-renowned
artist (Bernie Olszewski) who
had been tattooing since 1980.
Everything I knew about
tattooing, I threw out. I worked
on the Gold Coast for five
years under Paul Braniff. He
was my true mentor. I learned
everything about tattooing and
being a good human.
Then it was Surfers Paradise
to Los Angeles.
I walked into another amazing
job with one of the original
legends of tattooing in America,
Gil Monte, in Hollywood. He
tattooed every celebrity under
the sun in the ‘80s and ‘90s. It
was on Sunset Boulevard. From
there I ended up in Salt Lake
City, Las Vegas and Miami.
Do you focus a particular
style? Has your outlook
changed since those ‘dark’ days
in the ‘90s?
I specialise in realism. I pride
myself on my portrait work. I
do a lot of memorial tattoos,
portraits of loved ones passed.
It’s a huge honour for me to do
that because it’s healing process
for them. Having their loved one
on them forever is massive
for them.
OUR PEOPLE 17
from the dark side to Buddhism and beyond
INKED: Brad Raven with some of the designs on offer.
In basic terms, how you
produce a portrait tattoo?
I make a semi-permanent
stencil for the skin. Then I
look at the photo and transfer
what I see to the skin. It’s a
very complicated process
with portraits, you have to be
absolutely precise. The smallest
detail that’s off will alter the
person’s appearance. I like that
challenging aspect of it.
Is tattooing easier now
through technological
developments?
You could take hours to draw
a stencil sometimes, now I do
it with three clicks of a button
on the computer. There wasn’t
a lot of technology initially. We
were using machines that were
over 120 years-old. It was very
limiting. Over the last decade a
lot of bright people have come
into the industry. The machines,
stencils and needles have
changed.
Feels like an opportune
moment to dig into the needle
aspect then.
There’s two types, the
traditional needle and a safety
cartridge needle, which have an
internal membrane in them. They
withdraw within the cartridge
when they’re not in use. They
allow for a lot more precision. I
use a wireless machine so I don’t
have cords attached. It allows
me to get into different angles
and positions without being
uncomfortable. The old (electric)
machine was heavy and it used
to sit over the back of your hand.
There were a lot of issues with
RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury)
and carpal tunnel syndrome.
If someone said to me in 1991
years ago I’d be using a wireless
pen machine I’d have laughed.
We have tech engineers involved
now, so what we’re doing now
was not achievable 30 years ago.
Does this mean the tattooing
is not as painful now?
Yes. A cartridge’s spring
system softens the impact of the
needles and we don’t have to
bury the needle in as far as we
used to. The needles used to be
very blunt. They were designed
for entomology, designed for
sticking insects to boards. They
were terrible to use, so painful.
Generally you want to be
between half and three-quarters
of a millimetre under the skin.
For a blunter needle to penetrate
you had get the machine running
faster to counteract resistance
from the skin. Now needles
are so fine and sharp there’s no
resistance.
The din from those old
electric machines must have
been disconcerting, like a
dentist’s drill from yesteryear.
I’ve lost most of my hearing
in my left ear after using them
for 25 years. The silent machine
produces a more relaxing
atmosphere for clients too. Many
fall asleep. We play meditation
music. It’s night and day
compared to how tattoo shops
used to be. Back in the day it was
heavy metal blaring, you had
eight machines buzzing away. It
was just chaos.
Sounds pretty edgy, though.
Absolutely. Through the ‘90s
to the late 2000s, it was the wild
west. Everyone wanted to be a
rockstar. You’d get crazy clients.
They’d walk in, pick a design
and get tattooed on the spot.
In Surfers we were open until
midnight or 2am. Back then
we wouldn’t check if they were
drunk.
Late night tattoos are a more
sobering exercise these days,
aren’t they?
Now we have legal consent
forms for people to fill out. We
refuse if they’re intoxicated. We
want to make sure people are
making sound decisions. That’s
an important part about learning
to be a tattooist . . . how to work
with your clients and how to
make sure you’re giving them
something they’re not going to
regret. I’ve had people want a
demon ripping apart a woman on
their leg. I’m like, ‘What happens
when you have kids? How are
you going to explain that to your
children?’ Think about how
it’s going to look in 20 years.
Everyone changes, tattoos don’t.
You speak from experience
there, don’t you, with the flames
around your throat?
That’s 12 years-old now, it’s an
old gang tattoo. I’d rather not say
which gang. This doesn’t reflect
who I am now. I’m a peaceful
person, I’m a Buddhist, I’m vegan
. . . all the good stuff. I’m getting
it lasered off next year.
How many tattoos do you
have?
I had about 50, when I was
20 years-old, then I stopped
counting. I’ve had close to 300
hours worth of work in the chair.
I’ve probably spent $1000 because
I get tattooed by friends. Most
LEGEND: Iconic American
tattoo artist Norman
Collins, aka Sailor Jerry,
died in Hawaii in 1973
and today he is probably
best known as a brand of
rum.
tattooists charge between $150
and $250 an hour so it definitely
adds up.
What makes tattooing a
compulsion for many people?
It’s the permanence that’s
addictive. People might want a
marker of some kind: a time in
their life, a person or pet. It’s also
an amazing visual art you don’t
just see occasionally when you
walk into a room. It’s with you all
the time. My oldest client was 87.
She was an adorable lady. She had
a swallow on her hand because her
husband had one. He passed and
she wanted to remember him.
Do you have to be a student of
tattooing history to do it justice?
A lot of tattooists are not doing
apprenticeships so that rich,
beautiful history is not being
passed down. It’s very sad. Pretty
much the only one people know
now is Sailor Jerry and they don’t
even know he’s a tattooist. Sailor
Jerry (Norman Collins) was one
of the most influential western
tattooists in history. He taught
everyone who’s anyone and it’s sad
to see he’s just a bottle of rum now.
The most painful part of the
body to tattoo is?
Parts that aren’t exposed,
where you have a lot of nerve
endings that don’t get a lot of
touch. They’re very, very sensitive
so they’ll be more painful. If it’s
ticklish it’s going to hurt more.
People who get their full body
tattooed, the last part’s their
armpits. That’s to say: ‘Look, I’m
done.’
How much pressure do you
feel to get the tattoo spot on?
It’s the biggest concern and it’s
also the biggest reward. For a lot
of the clients it’s an emotional
release when they get tattooed,
they call it pain therapy. It’s
their time to let things go and do
something for themselves. We’re
taking on that so you have to
concentrate the whole time.
Any unusual requests etched
in your mind?
I tattooed genitals back in the
‘90s, male and female. One guy
wanted a heart tattooed on his
penis. He’d just got out of
jail and he wanted to surprise
his girlfriend.

LETTERS
Mayor Dalziel says (The Star Nov
11) that wellhead maintenance
neglect was not the cause of
chlorinating our previously pure
water supply, suggesting that
independent engineers were so
spooked by the Havelock North
events that they declined to sign
off on the safety of wellheads.
Are there documents confirming
this reason and that alone, for
this refusal?
Independent engineers and/
or other experts are paid to sign
off (or not) on the basis of what’s
before them, with their professional
integrity on the line each
time, not on an event more than
700km away, unless they thought
that similar issues might arise
here.
What the Havelock North
tragedy brought home to other
councils (apart from shivers)
was the widespread reality of
their neglect (i.e. not spending
sufficiently on this work) of their
underground infrastructure,
including in Christchurch.
Events in Wellington, Auckland
and Dunedin show that
this neglect is not confined to
Christchurch.
In our fair city, the pipes are so
leaky that nearly a quarter of its
consented water volume is lost
from them. A former leading city
councillor told me that, in heavy
rain events, the city’s sewerage
infrastructure carries about five
times its normal volume. That, of
course, is not as serious, in terms
of public health, as drinking water
management but is, perhaps,
an indicator of something being
out of sight, out of mind, until
there’s a crisis.
The mayor then highlighted
“additional” risks that the council
is now addressing, further
confirming the historic neglect.
As your correspondent, Paul
Grainger, wrote (The Star, Nov
11), his ex-city councillor friend
told him that “what people don’t
see they don’t worry about”.
A letter from city councillor
MacDonald (also The Star, Nov
11) seems to provide even further
confirmation, by writing that
the appointment of a standalone
regulator “is great and already
we are seeing councils across the
country lift their game”. That
means spending more money,
something the frugal element of
the city council he belongs to has
consistently opposed.
A decade or so ago, the city
council applied to Environment
Canterbury for a 35-year
consent to continue discharging
wastewater (treated sewage) into
the Estuary. ECan’s commissioners
gave it just five years, a
polite way of saying “no” but
allowing the city council time
to build the ocean outfall. A
similar approach to the city’s
domestic water consent might
just have brought about a bettermaintained
water infrastructure.
While some change in the
management of the three waters
seems to be widely accepted, I
am not sure that the Government’s
proposals are the best
available and I don’t know what
other options it considered and
dismissed. I do intend to give
more thought to this, to develop
what may be a more acceptable
public and democratically based
approach.
Vaccination
Thousands of women up
and down the country are now
stressed as they are suddenly
without their midwives with no
replacement in site.
Numerous nurses, doctors and
healthcare workers are no longer
allowed to practice, which will
cause hospitals to be overworked
caring for cancer patients, accidents,
attempted suicides,
surgery and other conditions.
Firefighters and corrections
officers are also forced to leave
co-workers understaffed because
of their personal choices.
How are these mandates about
public health and safety?
Some students will now struggle
in much larger classes with some
teachers no longer able to work
because of their personal health
choices. Some schools will lose
more than half their staff. Yet
according to an extensive British
study, “The overall risk of children
becoming severely ill or dying
from Covid is extremely low’’.
I struggle to understand why
the vaccine protected are so
fearful of the unvaccinated. Have
they lost faith in their protection?
–D Downward
A teacher protesting about
the vaccine mandate gave her
reason for not being vaccinated
as “I don’t like being told what to
do”. Heaven help society if this is
what she passes on to her pupils.
Her classes must be a ball of
laughs once the kids catch on
that its okay to not like being told
what to do so don’t cooperate.
–Lindsay James
Bishopdale
House prices
The shocking news last week
that house prices in Christchurch
have risen 36 per cent may
be good for some, but a disaster
for low income people and first
home buyers.
This must be completely
blamed on poor Government
policies and could be easily fixed,
but they don’t know how.
It can’t be blamed on the
Covid as when Norm Kirk was
in power with the same socialist
and financial policies exactly
the same thing happened. I was
building a new house then and
you couldn’t even buy a case of
nails.
Labour professes to be the
Government for the poor and
homeless, but each time they
make the situation worse. Added
to this is the new taxes and
regulations on landlords and as
more go out of renting rents are
escalating too.
Move over in your bed Jacinda
because you will now need to
share it with the homeless.
LAST WEEK the city
council received a
significant number of
deputations on the city
council’s submission on
the proposed law change
that would require us to
amend our district plan
to allow most of the city’s
residential sections to
be subdivided into three
properties, each of three or
more storeys.
THis would mean there
would be minimal or no
restrictions, often without
resource consent being
required or the public
being notified.
They were very concerned
about the loss of
greenspace and trees, and
a detriment to local amenity
and the liveability of
local neighbourhoods. We
agree.
We made it clear that the
city council is supportive
of the Government’s
aims to address housing
shortages and enable the
delivery of a wider range of
housing options.
It might have been a
bi-partisan announcement,
however, there had been
no prior engagement with
local government and
with residents of cities like
ours.
The legislation is
going to have significant
impacts on council’s placemaking,
land-use and
infrastructure planning
work, as well as on our
local communities and
neighbourhoods.
We think a collaborative
partnership between local
and central government
would produce better
outcomes than a onesize-fits-all,
legislative
approach. But we have said
this before.
There seems to be little
consideration of the
work the city has done
OPINION 21
One-size-fits-all is not
the way to go when it
comes to city planning
Mayor
Lianne Dalziel
with our neighbouring
districts dating back to
the Greater Christchurch
Urban Development
Strategy, something which
helped us get through the
displacement impacts of
the 2010/2011 Canterbury
earthquakes, with the
development of the Land
Use Recovery Plan and
Replacement District
Plan. We have already
committed to increased
residential growth through
intensification, rather than
urban sprawl.
The Government Policy
Statement on Housing
and Urban Development
says that ‘places should be
accessible, connected, well
designed and resilient’.
We agree and that’s what
missing from the one-sizefits-all
approach.
FOCUS ON HEALTH
Amazing health miracles
from the silkworm
Serrapeptase an enzyme produced in
silkworms may become one of the most
widely used natural health solutions
for its ability to replace the majority of
anti-inflammatory drugs and bypass
operations. It is nature’s answer to pain,
chronic inflammation and clogged
arteries. Enzymes are essential for
life. Constantly working to build and
regenerate the body, they help digest
food, break down toxins and cleanse the
blood, in addition to thousands of other
functions. A lack of enzymes in the body
leads to food intolerances, allergies,
digestive issues, disease and poor health.
Studies show an average 70-year old has
only 20 percent of the enzymes found in
the body of a 20-year old.
Serrapeptase is a natural antiinflammatory,
which can clean, clear
and reduce inflammation while
dissolving non-living tissue including
blood clots, cysts, arterial plaque and
mucus. One of its major benefits is its
ability to reduce pain.
The serrapeptase enzyme was first
found in the intestine of the silkworm
in the late 1960’s. The silkworm uses it
to dissolve the hard cocoon, allowing
the moth to escape as well as to digest
the tough mulberry leaves it feeds on.
Serrapeptase can now be produced
commercially by a fermentation process
of the microorganism Serriata E15. It is
prescribed by doctors across Europe and
Asia.
Clinical studies over the last 40 years
Thursday November 18 2021 The Star
have shown serrapeptase to have
remarkable benefits in a vast range of
health conditions including; blocked
arteries, cardiovascular, arthritis,
asthma, lung conditions, pain, tumors,
autoimmune disease and many more.
In Germany, Dr. Hans Nieper clinically
researched serrapeptase and found it
could clear blocked arteries and prevent
the need for bypass operations. U.K.
pharmacist Dennis Gore talked on BBC
radio about the dramatic results he has
had with serrapeptase. One case was a
man in his 60’s who had been a heavy
smoker, was wheeled into his pharmacy.
He was breathless due to emphysema
and COPD and could hardly talk. He
was on antibiotics, oxygen and getting
bad infections. Dennis prescribed him
serrapeptase and three weeks later the
man walked into his pharmacy, with
no wheelchair and no breathlessness
and said to Dennis he was no longer on
antibiotics, nor oxygen cylinders and
was feeling great.
Serrapeptase has been shown to be
very safe supplement and according
to researchers can be used with most
medications. However let your doctor
know as medications may need reducing
or stopping as the need for them
reduces.
Benefits from
the silkworm
Serrapeptase, an enzyme first discovered in the silkworm, could
become one of the most widely used natural health remedies due
to its ability to potentially replace the majority of anti-inflammatory
drugs & bypass operations.
Serrapeptase is a natural anti-inflammatory enzyme that according
to research can clean, clear & reduce inflammation while safely
dissolving non-living tissue such as blood clots, cysts, arterial
plaque & mucus. One of its major benefits is its ability to reduce
pain & clear clogged arteries.
SERRAPEPTASE SUPPORTS
• Inflammation relief, works on clearing the cause
• Pain relief
• Safely clearing the arteries of arterial plaque
that could lead to a heart attack or stroke
Another role we play in air quality is assessing
the intensity and source of odours.
Air can carry all manner of unpleasant
smells, with some being a real nuisance for
damaging its bilateral relations with China.
It’s a year since Environment Canterbury
The participation of the Taiwan region in
pests from warmer climates.
All these eventualities have
to be planned and prepared for,
and Environment Canterbury
will remain in the vanguard of
these climate change efforts.
One example is the $40 million
Waimakariri River flood
protection project, completed
late last year. The network of
floodgates and stopbanks will
protect half a million people and
$8 billion of community and
business assets from a possible
“super flood”.
The last major flood was in
December 1957, when parts
of Coutts Island in Belfast and
Kainga were swamped by river
flow peaking at 3990 cubic
threatened and facing increased
pressures due to river system
change.
Wetlands are also ecosystems
at-risk nationally and regionally,
degraded by draining, damming
and diversion affecting their
ability to sequester carbon,
cleanse freshwater and mitigate
flooding, as well as impacting on
biodiversity and mahinga kai.
With biosecurity, we are
putting greater emphasis on the
risks of new pests establishing
in Canterbury. Warming
temperatures, changing soils and
new land uses mean new weeds
especially, will be able to gain a
better foothold across the region.
More broadly, we have to
curb reliance on fossil fuels and
find environmentally suitable
alternatives, such as electricity and
hydrogen, to power our public

More choice
for your bins?
REDUCING WASTE is
everyone’s responsibility. The city
council’s kerbside service has
three bins – rubbish, recycling
and organics. Having recycling
and organics bins reduces the
amount of waste going to landfill.
The city council is considering
changing the kerbside service to
give you more choice for your
bins.
You could choose bin sizes to
match your household needs,
meaning you’ll only pay for what
you use. Having the right size
bins makes it easier to put the
correct items in each bin and
reduce waste.
It costs more to dispose of rubbish
than to process recycling or
organics. While the city council
recovers some costs for recycling
and organics, it still pays to process
them – nothing is free. This
is why if you choose a smaller bin
it will cost you less and a bigger
bin will cost you more.
leaps into the relative unknown,
so when an opportunity to play
at the chance.
A representative basketballer,
Leonard’s first game of 15-aside
opening round of the inaugural
still acquainting herself with the
She was clearly quick on the
by the Wallaroos against Japan
the following year and she
captained the Brumbies in this
year’s Covid-depleted domestic
“I’m relatively new to the
SPORT 27
learning curve for Australian import
“I didn’t even know what a
maul was so, it’s definitely been a
steep learning curve over the last
couple of years.”
Canterbury’s rugby headquarters
is arguably the ideal finishing
school so Leonard had no hesitation
in sidestepping the opening
three rounds of Super W to develop
at Rugby Park and represent
Matatu, which encompasses the
South Island.
Leonard had been exploring
playing options in Ireland when
former Walleroos assistant coach
Peter Breen suggested an alternative
closer to home.
“He said (Ireland) would be fun
but: ‘I think I’ve got something
better for you’.”
Breen had a virtual meeting
with Matatu head coach Blair
Baxter and chief executive Sarah
Munro, Leonard joined in at
short notice.
“It was a bit of a whirlwind
from asking the question (about
Ireland) to having some pretty
exciting conversations later that
day,” she said.
Leonard will be joined by NSW
Waratahs first five-eighth and
fellow international Arabella Mc-
Kenzie for the new competition
which plays out next March.
They arrive in early February
for pre-season training, and an
opportunity to gel with unfamiliar
teammates.
“It’s going to be awesome
getting to be part of that environment
and experiencing what it’s
like to just be an athlete and be
able to concentrate on rugby,”
said Leonard, a qualified physiotherapist.
There will be no time for sightseeing
after Matatu ideally win
the March 26 final, with Leonard
and McKenzie heading straight
home for Super W commitments.
The 26-year-old appreciated
the leeway offered by the Brumbies
and Rugby Australia, which
has an eye on next year’s Rugby
28 The Star Thursday November 18 2021
Fortuner provides all the answers
I’M OFTEN asked what is the
best sport utility vehicle? The
choice in today’s market is vast.
I usually answer with three
questions, what size? How many
seats? And what is it going to be
used for?
Depending on the answer to
the last question, I reply by saying
there are two fundamental
differences in construction that
must be taken into account, and
they are quite technical.
However, put simply, there
is the option between ladder
frame and monocoque construction.
The rigid ladder-like frame
vehicle carries the engine and
drivetrain, a separate body construction
is mounted on it. The
monocoque frame, on the other
hand, has a unitised frame and
body combined.
Most of today’s SUVs are
monocoque, but if you want a
serious four-wheel-drive vehicle
that will take you to the backblocks
and beyond then a ladder
frame vehicle is best, although
it’s not quite so user-friendly
in close confine environments.
You see, almost all of the ladder
frame SUVs in today’s market
are based on a light truck/utility
chassis; take Toyota’s Fortuner,
for example, it sits on the Hilux
platform.
Along with the chassis underneath
that will take you
places, ladder frame models
have advanced four-wheel-drive
systems, they require input from
the driver through complex dialin
modes, depending on what is
required for the journey ahead,
taking into account all have a
low ratio gearing mechanism
that allows for crawl-speed motion
over rough ground.
Toyota’s Fortuner was late in
the SUV market here, it followed
Mitsubishi’s Challenger/
Pajero Sport, Isuzu’s MU series,
Ford’s Everest, Holden’s recently
departed Colorado 7/Trailblazer
and Nissan’s first and second
generation Pathfinder.
Nevertheless, the Fortuner has
gained good ground in the serious
SUV market in the five years
it has been here, and it has just
had a mild facelift.
It also gets the uprated powerplant
that arrived in the heavilyfacelifted
Hilux a year ago. The
big 2.8-litre turbocharged diesel
is now rated at 150kW and
500Nm, up 20kW and 50Nm.
Thanks to a new cylinder block,
pistons and turbo design modifications,
emissions have been
reduced and fuel economy is
also better, the Fortuner is now
rated with a 7.6-litre per 100km
combined cycle average, down
from 8.6l/100km.
During my testing time the
dash display readout was constantly
listing around 9/100km,
dropping to 8l/100km on a rural
run with 7l/100km showing
instantaneously at 100km, the
engine ticking over very slowly
at 1600rpm.
ROBUST:
The
Toyota
Fortuner
sits high
off the
ground
for crosscountry
travel.
TOYOTA FORTUNER: Four-wheel-drive to take seven occupants off-the-beaten-track.
If I’m not being deceived, the
Fortuner’s power plant seems
a lot quieter and more refined
than ever before, it purrs along
with a gentle throb you can only
hear if you listen intently. It is
quiet inside the cabin and even
under load the driveline sounds
unflustered.
In terms of performance the
Fortuner will easily keep pace
with today’s busy traffic, it’s
strong off the line with a 9sec
run to 100km/h, and if you are
on the highway it will complete a
highway overtake in 6.8sec (80-
120km/h).
On the subject of figures, the
Fortuner uses its ladder chassis
to much benefit. It has a 3100kg
braked trailer tow rating that has
just been lifted from 2800kg.
That’s why its design is so useful,
the Fortuner is a tough goanywhere
vehicle that will take
you, your family and belongings
to places a traditional SUV
would struggle. There is huge
ground clearance (279mm), and
with chunky tyres grip in the
loose is well maintained.
I took the evaluation vehicle
through the tracks that lead
across the Hororata River; it
wasn’t a challenge, but the river
was flowing freely after a high
country drenching. The base of
the river is very stony and quite
uneven, but the Fortuner soaked
up the rough stuff without battering
the occupants.
That’s no easy feat to get right,
• Price – Toyota Fortuner
Limited, $61,290
• Dimensions – Length,
4795mm; width, 1855mm;
height, 1835mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
four-wheel-drive,
2755cc, 150kW, 500Nm,
six-speed automatic
• Performance – 0-100km/h,
9sec
• Fuel usage – 7.6l/100km
by sheer nature of its load-bearing
live rear axle the Fortuner
has a relatively comfortable
ride, there’s a bit of a jiggle over
uneven tar seal surfaces, but it’s
on a par with the other models
I mentioned in my introduction
and a by-product of what Hilux
hands down. One point of difference,
though, is that the Fortuner
gets coil springs at the rear,
the Hilux still has a leaf spring
set-up. The coils do provide
more compliance for comfort.
Given its height, accessing the
Fortuner requires a bit of a step
up, and you do need to bend
a bit to get into the rear row
of seats. Nevertheless, there’s a
generous amount of room back
there, although if long journeys
are on the cards, place the
youngest or smallest back there.
Once seated, the occupants
are well cocooned and sheltered
from the rugged mechanicals
underneath, ride comfort is
high, and on my long inland
evaluation there was never a
point where I felt taxed or tired.
For 2021 the Fortuner adds a
larger display panel (8in), Apple
CarPlay and Android Auto.
Those items on top of what
would ordinarily be deemed
a generous amount of fitment.
Well, it needs to be well
equipped, the Fortuner comes
in at $57,790 for the GXL, the
evaluation car was a Limited
model that adds $3500. That
makes quite a big outlay, but it
does sit well with the prices of its
competition.
All that aside, you are buying
into the quintessential SUV, one
that will last forever and go anywhere.
At 4.8m that does mean
you have to be picky finding
a central city car park, but the
benefits come when you make a
weekend excursion to the high
country lakes.
If that’s not what you need,
then Toyota’s Highlander could
be the alternative, it doesn’t get
the high-tech four-wheel-drive
system but it does have even
more finesse and seven-seat
capability, its underpinnings are
state-of-the-art and occupant
comfort is high-level.
For those whose questions
revolve around what is best in
this market, do your homework
and work out what is best for
all situations. If you do chose
a Fortuner, its versatility won’t
leave you disappointed.
The board advises that a number of vacancies have become available at Breens Intermediate School.
Since applications closed on 31 August, the board has received a number of enquiries from parents
of out-of-zone students seeking to enrol their children at the school next year.
Because the board operates an enrolment scheme, it is required to fill any vacant out-of-zone places
by ballot in cases where there are more applications for enrolment than there are places available.
The board has determined that 15 places are likely to be available to out-of-zone students for the
start of 2022.
The board is prepared to receive applications, in addition to those it already holds, so long as they
reach the school by 20 December. If a ballot is required it will be held on 21 December.
Parents will be informed of the outcome of the ballot within three days of the ballot being held.
Under GREEN and ORANGE hospitality will be able to
operate with NO LIMITS, so the Club can operate
as normal if the Club is operating within vaccination
certificate requirements.
This means that to enter the Kaiapoi Club you will
need to have a double vaccination certificate as
mandated by the Government.
To be prepared for this, Staff, Members, and any other
people entering the Club will need to be aware that
the vaccination process takes 3-4 weeks, so you
need to plan for this if you are not already vaccinated.
We understand that there will
be some strong opinions on
the above policy, but it
really is out of our hands.
We must comply
