Vaccine rules
take effect
Vaccine mandates cameinto
effect thisweek, amid
nationwideprotests and
hundreds of new Covid19
cases.
The MinistryofHealth this
week announced arecord 222
cases on Tuesday, and the
death of apatient at Auckland
City Hospital. The patient, in
their late70s, was admitted to
hospital on November 11 and
subsequently tested positive
for Covid19.
The cases were all in the
North Island but as theDelta
outbreak continues to spread,
protesters aroundthe country
have continued to taketothe
streets to decry vaccination
mandatessuch as the latest
impacting on theeducation
sector.
As of this week teachers and
other education staff, as well
as thoseinthe health and
disability sectors, must have
had at least one covid
vaccination dose. Theymust be
fully vaccinated by January 1.
Mid Canterbury principals
association spokesperson
Rebekah Clementsaid schools
around the Ashburton District
had been impacted by the
mandates.
‘‘Schoolswill have made
varyingarrangements
depending on the usual role of
the staff member and what is
needed to ensure minimal
impact on student learning,’’
she said.
Although visitors inside
school gates had beenlimited
for quite sometime, there were
now rules in place for people
helping with education outside
the classroom programmes.
‘‘It adds an extra
complication to making
arrangements for 2022, but I’m
sure schools will work through
this the bestway they can and
with the interests of both
learners and their team in
mind, whilst following any
employment requirements,’’
she said.
Under the mandates, and
when the new traffic light
system starts, businesses will
also be able to introduce
mandates and require staff to
be vaccinated.
Ministry data shows 94
percent of eligible people in
the Canterbury District Health
Board area, which includes
Mid Canterbury,have had
their first vaccination and 82
percent their second dose.
In South Canterbury 89
percent have had their first
dose, and80percent their
second.
Hundreds of Cantabrians
took to the streets of
Christchurch last Saturday to
protest against Covid19
lockdowns, restrictions and
vaccine mandates.They
marched fromChristchurch's
