DID YOU
KNOW?
Cheltenham-born Cameron Pring joined
City as an 18-year-old back in 2016 but it
wouldn’t be until August of this season
that he would make his first-team debut.
Coincidentally, that appearance
came back in his home county of
Gloucestershire where the Robins
were held to a 2-2 draw against Forest
Green Rovers, who went on to win in the
resulting penalty shootout in Round One
of the Carabao Cup.
Prior to joining City’s Academy, Pring was
a member of Cheltenham Town’s own
youth programme and would later return
to Whaddon Road on loan from City.
THE
GAFFER
Welcome back
to Ashton Gate
for today’s
match against
Blackburn
Rovers. May I start by welcoming Tony Mowbray,
his coaching team and squad. We are from the
same era and I have a lot of respect for him and
what he has done in his career.
off the bench and that’s the reward he deserves
after all the effort he has put in throughout his
young career to date.
A lot was said and written about the long wait for
a win at home but the negativity that comes with
that is now behind us and we are planning to return
stronger and make this a difficult place for teams
to play.
I want to thank you all for
your well wishes while
I have been recovering
from my recent Covid-19
experience.
It’s meant a great deal
to hear and read your
messages of support and
it was good to be back at
training this week and see
people face to face rather
than Zoom.
Curtis Fleming, the
coaches and I have
remained in regular
contact. The squad has been in great hands
and I trust the group to come back from the
international break ready to tackle this next chunk
of the season head on.
A lot of hard work is being put in but of course
there have been huge frustrations with how some
results have gone this season.
WE’RE
EXTREMELY
GRATEFUL FOR
YOUR SUPPORT...
YOU’VE STUCK
BY US THROUGH
THE UPS AND
DOWNS, WHICH
IS CRUCIAL.
We’re extremely grateful
for your support, home and
away, and you’ve stuck by
us through the ups and
downs, which is crucial.
There were 3,000 of you
when we travelled to
Coventry City before the
international break and
don’t underestimate the
difference that makes. Our
last two games have ended
in defeat but I echo our
CEO Richard Gould, who
recently told Robins TV that
we all want to do our best
both for ourselves and you, our loyal fans.
With that in mind, the squad are well prepared
for the visit of Blackburn Rovers and I am eagerly
anticipating our return.
As the winter months approach it’s an opportunity
for our character and talents to really shine through.
We beat Barnsley the last time we played at home
and it was absolutely fantastic to end that long
winless run at Ashton Gate.
Ayman Benarous also made his debut after coming
Enjoy the game.
Cheers,
Nige
BLACKBURN ROVERS
KEY PLAYER
22
BEN
BRERETON-DIAZ
The Stoke-on-Trent born Chilean international
has been in scintillating form in front of goal
this season with 13 goals to his name to this
point, including a hat-trick in a 5-1 win over
Cardiff City.
The 22-year-old sits as the Championship’s
joint-second top goalscorer for the season
behind Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic and level on
goals with AFC Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke,
however the Blackburn striker boasts better shot
accuracy (63%).
The forward played his youth football at
Manchester United and Stoke City’s Academies,
before being picked up by Nottingham Forest. He
went on to sign on loan for Blackburn in August
2018 before make the move permanent in January
2019. He scored his first goal for Rovers in April
2019 in a 2-0 win against Bolton Wanderers.
On the international stage, Brereton-Diaz
represented England at youth level – finishing
joint top-scorer at the 2017 European Under-19
Championship – before opting to represent Chile,
his mother's birthplace. He has scored three
times from nine appearances for his adopted
country to date.
DID YOU
KNOW?
Blackburn Rovers' all-time leading goalscorer Alan Shearer
was inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame in
August this year. He scored 260 goals from 441 top-flight
appearances, winning the Premier League title in 1995.
BLACKBURN ROVERS FOUND THEMSELVES
LEVEL ON POINTS WITH SIXTH-PLACED
QPR COMING OFF THE BACK OF THE
SEASON’S THIRD INTERNATIONAL BREAK.
It’s a good place to be, albeit
it’s a heavily contested table
at this point in the campaign,
with mid-table Swansea City
just three points behind Tony
Mowbray’s side.
They will need to find more
consistency and put their 7-0
thrashing against Fulham earlier
this month well behind them.
It was only the second time in
a year Blackburn had lost by
more than one goal and they
needed to provide the biggest of
responses to that result.
It wasn’t ideal then when
Sheffield United took an early
lead in the next fixture. However,
Rovers battled back to win 3-1
at Ewood Park and go into the
international break with a third
win from four games.
Ian Poveda-Ocampo, on
loan from Leeds United,
scored a goal and grabbed
an assist against the Blades
in a standout display from the
midfielder, earning himself a
place in the Championship
Team of the Week. Ben
Brereton-Diaz has also played
a crucial role with 13 league
goals to his name at this point
Rovers Chilean international striker Ben Brereton-Diaz in action with City's
Han-Noah Massengo during last season's 0-0 stalemate at Ewood Park
in the campaign. He’s recently
hailed his experiences with
the Chilean national side for
providing him a boost.
As for the manager, the
experienced Mowbray has
been Head Coach since
February 2017, helping the
club bounce back from
League One at the first time of
asking just over a year later.
The former Hibernian, Celtic,
Middlesbrough and Ipswich
Town boss previously led West
Bromwich Albion to the Premier
League as Championship
winners in 2007/08.
FOR ALL
SPOTLIGHT ON
COLOUR
BLINDNESS
Bristol City
Football Club
is actively
engaged in
making football more enjoyable
and accessible to those
with colour blindness.
The club is very conscious
that football kits can
sometimes be difficult to see
for fans during games, when
the colours are too dark or not
suitable for people suffering
from colour blindness.
As an inclusive club who value
all our supporters, we have
written to the English Football
League and are engaging
with Colour Blindness Aware
to see how we, and football
as a whole, can improve the
whole matchday experience for
those with colour blindness, in
particular around kits.
WHAT IS COLOUR
BLINDNESS?
Colour blindness (colour vision
deficiency, or CVD) affects
approximately 1 in 12 men (8%) and 1
in 200 women in the world. In Britain
this means there are approximately 3
million colour blind people (about 4.5%
of the entire population).
Most colour blind people are able to see
things as clearly as other people but are
unable to fully ‘see’ red, green or blue
light. The most common form of colour
blindness is known as ‘red/green colour
blindness’.
The simulated pictures on the left from
the AFC Bournemouth home game
show red vision deficiency (above) and
green vision deficiency (below).
CON
SULLIVAN
Former City
goalkeeper
Con Sulllivan
will return
to Ashton
Gate against Blackburn
Rovers today, where he will be
presented with a gift signed by
the first team squad.
The players have each signed
a goalkeeper top for the former
club shotstopper, now aged 93,
who will also receive a framed
photo of himself in action.
Spotted in the Bristol Downs
League, he signed for City in May
1949 aged 20. Within five years
he was an Arsenal player in the
top flight of English football. Con
made 73 league and seven cup
appearances for City, his seminal
season being 1951/52 when he
was ever present.
He secured a dream move to
Arsenal in February 1954, with
a friendly against the Gunners
on March 30th 1954 part of
the transfer deal. The match
attracted a 28,991 crowd to see
Con in Arsenal colours.
Con was understudy to Jack
Kelsey at Highbury but made 28
league appearances before a
shoulder injury ended his career
in 1958. He returned to his home
city to live and work and still lives
in Knowle West.
Sullivan will be joined by fellow
former players Gerry Sweeney,
Shaun Taylor and Bobby Williams
in the Lansdown Restaurant.
GEORGE
PLAYER
INTERVIEW
YOUNG GEORGE TANNER HAS HAILED THOSE
AROUND HIM FOR HELPING HIM ADJUST AT A
NEW LEVEL AND HE’S SET HIMSELF A NEW
TARGET AS HE LOOKS TO DEVELOP FURTHER…
BOY
George
Tanner
turned
22 this
week and
he’s determined to learn all
he can from the more senior
professionals around him as he
seeks to continue developing
his game.
It’s been a busy first few months
for the right-back, who joined
City at the end of August, with
more game time than he would
have expected, aiding his
development.
But as a young member of the
squad, Tanner says it’s the advice
of those around him which has
been very beneficial to his start
to life in BS3.
He told THE ROB NS: “It’s been a
very positive start for me at the
club. I’ve been reasonably happy
with my performances so far so
now it’s about doing what I can
to nail down my position in the
team and I’m happy with how
it’s gone.
“Of course, I look up to the older
players like Andy King who has
helped me a lot. Danny Simpson
has been very supportive of
me as well, he gives me little
confidence boosters and there’s
no bad blood playing in the same
position. He’s done nothing but
help me. He’s been in the game a
long time and passed on a lot of
tips and support.
“I’m always learning from those
players, they’ve played at the
top level so I’m looking to take
anything I can from them.”
Tanner made the leap from
League Two, joining City from 4
Words James Crawley
I HAVE A LONG WAY
TO GO AND THERE'S
A LOT OF LEARNING
TO DO...SO I HAVE
TO PUSH MYSELF
EVERY SINGLE DAY.
4 Carlisle United at
the end of the summer
transfer window.
He wasn’t expecting to
play so soon but he made
his debut in the 2-1 win
away at QPR in September
and has ten appearances
to his name at this point in
the season.
“It’s taken a lot of adapting
having gone into the
Championship from
League Two,” Tanner said.
“The Championship is one
of the toughest leagues
and I’ve had to adapt to the
playing style, the different
training techniques as
well. Whether it’s playing
in games or training it’s a
new level, a faster tempo
and I’ve played against top
opponents every single
week.
“I’ve changed lifestyle
elements too to help me
recover after training and
games, and make sure
I’m ready for the next
game at this level. But I’ve
settled well and I’m trying
to improve myself all the
time.”
As he develops, Tanner
aspires to become a
first-choice right-back and
he hopes that can be at an
even higher level.
He said: “In the short-term
I want to push on and
get to a level where I can
say I am first choice at
right-back. I still believe I
have a long way to go and
there’s a lot of learning to
do, so I have to take advice
from as many people as I
can. That comes from the
players around me and
the coaching staff so it’s
about keeping my feet on
the ground and pushing
myself however I can to be
as good as I can. To play at
the highest level possible
would be the goal and
hopefully that will happen
at Bristol City.
to make
strides in the
Professional
just three points behind
leaders Cardiff City.
The young Robins sit second
in the Southern Division thanks
largely to an unbeaten away
record.
After beating Cinderford Town
4-1 in the GFA Senior Challenge
Cup, an Ayman Benarous
hat-trick inspired a 4-2 win at
Watford. The 18-year-old bagged
his first goal of the afternoon
with a deflected free-kick inside
the opening 10 minutes. After
Sam Pearson had cancelled out a
2-1 home lead, Benarous secured
his second in style as he picked
out the top corner from the edge
of the box before robbing the
ball from a Watford defender to
finish with aplomb to wrap up
his treble.
A 2-0 home defeat to QPR
followed, but there was joy once
more on the road at Charlton
Athletic as Saikou Janneh and
Jamie Knight-Lebel starred in a
3-0 victory, with the latter on the
scoresheet after Louis Britton
smashed home a first-half
opener.
Next up for the Under-23s is
a trip to third-placed Millwall
Small Business
At eBay, we know small business and
football clubs used to be like chips and
made in community heaven.
Ironmongers, ship workers, spring
makers and cobblers, all formed clubs
which decades later are still prospering.
But nowadays, you’d think it was all
eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues
humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support
power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be
donating our advertising space to a lot
of these businesses – on match day
throughout the coming season, to ensure
they can continue to thrive in our local
