We know you are as eager as we are for concert
and creative activity to return in whatever capacity
possible. The discovery of new and old sounds,
living in the miraculous sound world of the string
quartet, and sharing great music seems needed now
more than ever before. Our motto has always been
“caring for tradition, daring to be different” and in
2022, we shall do just that. Over the last 18 months,
we undertook a full evaluation of our activity and
were so buoyed by the response from our audience.
“The Flinders Quartet are accessible musicians who
share their love and joy of music making with the
audience. I love the way that they have something
old and something new on each of their programs, so
you are always expanding your circle of knowledge.
I love the way that they celebrate Australian
composers and their New Composers Program.”
AUDIENCE MEMBER
In 2022, we complete our recording project of the
works for string quartet by Margaret Sutherland in
partnership with ABC Classic, undertake our first
national tour for Musica Viva Australia with dear
friend, Karin Schaupp (guitar), record for broadcast
no less than four new works by emerging and
established composers, continue our celebrated
Composer Development Program, continue our
role as Artistic Patrons of John Noble’s Quartet
Program, and commission seven new works to be
played alongside our beloved Beethoven, Brahms
and Haydn. To say we are excited for 2022 to begin
is quite the understatement!
Constantly evolving, we have begun work on our
new online string quartet hub, FQ Digital. It will be a
one-stop portal for you to enjoy our online content,
interviews, exploration into the music, curated
listening and viewing, and more. With a variety of
free and paid content, an FQ Digital subscription
will give you broad access like never before. Who
needs Netflix?!
We can’t wait to see you at a concert or through FQ
Digital in 2022.
Thibaud, Wilma, Helen and Zoe
“FQ is always moving forward. Whilst presenting classics from the
vast chamber music repertoire and exhibiting an exemplary standard
of playing they continue to bring new and exciting works to their
performances and this is giving the audience the best of both worlds.
It is really positive to see the way they encourage emerging and
established contemporary composers in a fully inclusive platform.”
AUDIENCE MEMBER
A NOTE FROM JULIAN BURNSIDE AO QC CHAIR OF THE FLINDERS QUARTET BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Flinders Quartet members are the eternal optimists. With every
obstacle placed in their way over the past 18 months (and there have
been many) they have turned most of the lemons into lemonade and
used the opportunities to challenge their artistic perceptions. As we
all step into 2022 in need of a little nurturing, FQ’s path forward
is one that surges ahead with finesse and determination. I am very
much looking forward to seeing you at FQ concerts in 2022 as we
celebrate FQ’s return to the concert stage with magnificent music. I
am most intrigued to hear how the five emerging composers respond
to Beethoven’s Grosse Fugue (Op. 133) in the final program with the
collection of commissioned Vignettes. While the Op. 133 is not my
favourite of the Beethoven Quartets, it is a piece that still astonishes
me today through 21st century Australian ears. Indeed, I believe the
late Beethoven quartets to be some of the best in all music history.

“After premiering “Hidden Thoughts II: Return to Sender” by Katy Abbott in 2020, we
knew she was the perfect person to explore and uncover Margaret Sutherland’s life
through a new song cycle using text from Margaret’s own letters and diaries.
Sutherland’s life story is extraordinary and she played a crucial role in the development of
Australia’s music scene. I wouldn’t be surprised if a movie is made soon!
Camille Claudel‘s life is already the subject of at least one film and as Rodin’s muse, her own
creativity was often overlooked. Using text in her native French from letters by Camille,
Melody Eötvös introduces Australian audiences to this very significant sculpteur.
It’s not the first time a string quartet has been used as a biographical tool (Smetana’s
“From My Life” being the obvious example) and I am thoroughly looking forward to
understanding these artists even more deeply through this project.”
THIBAUD PAVLOVIC-HOBBA, VIOLIN
“Of all the works we are playing in 2022, these quartets by Brahms and Haydn
need no introduction. For me, I can’t wait to sink into the sumptuous romanticism
and grandeur of Brahms and have fun with the ingenuity and wit of Haydn. What
better way to get through a Melbourne Winter! At this point in the year, look out for
concerts involving the Piruli Quartet. The winners of the Flinders Quartet prize for
the Musica Viva Strike a Chord competition, they are really magnificent players and
we’re looking forward to working with them and introducing them to you.”

“We wouldn’t want to hear all new works, or only the best-loved, familiar
works of the great names. Your balance is just right.”
AUDIENCE MEMBER
“Beethoven: the standard of greatness against which all composers since have measured themselves.
For any quartet player, coming back to Beethoven is always therapeutic, a spiritually nourishing
and technically strengthening homecoming and I can’t wait to get immersed in this program. It
encompasses a wide range of Beethoven’s output from one of his virtuosic Op. 18 set of six early
quartets to the iconic and fearsome Grosse Fugue from his Late Period. Originally written as the last
movement of his Op. 130 quartet, it took on a life of its own when Beethoven wrote an alternate last
movement for 130 and more importantly, because of its scale, drama, complexity and unrelenting,
uncompromising intensity - and it’s just as intense for the audience as it is for the performers.
What’s really special about this program, though, is the opportunity we’ve given to five young
composers to explore the Grosse Fugue and respond to it in their own way with tiny miniatures,
the exact opposite of the colossus before them. I’m intrigued to see what they come up with!”
WILMA SMITH, VIOLIN
FQ COMPOSER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
Over the years, the pile of scores sent from composers grew exponentially and we were very conscious of
the fact that we could be missing some real gems by not playing them. We decided to devote specific time to
create our Composer Development Program and put out a national call for scores from emerging composers
(regardless of age) to be assessed anonymously. Since the inaugural program in 2016, we have been privileged
to discover some phenomenal talent.
Successful participants enjoy time with a composition mentor, workshops with the quartet, a studio recording
of their work and a live-streamed concert reaching national and international audiences.
We are delighted to announce that our 2022 composition mentor will be Dr Katy Abbott.
ALL EMERGING AUSTRALIAN COMPOSERS ARE INVITED TO APPLY
Applications open: Tuesday 1 March, 2022
Deadline for submissions: Thursday 31 March, 2022 (5pm)
For full details including submissions T&Cs, visit flindersquartet.com/composer
“Flinders is truly situated within the local Australian community commissioning Australian
composers and collaborating with Australian performers. It fosters connections across the
arts sector and between arts organisations and audiences.”
ELIZABETH SELLARS, MUSICIAN & COLLABORATOR
“(The Flinders Quartet) Composer Development Program has been well-conceived, with practical
outcomes and an influx of young & emerging composers travelling to Melbourne to take part in that.”
STUART GREENBAUM, COMPOSER & COLLABORATOR
The 2022 Composer Development Program concert will be live streamed on FQ Digital (free access), and a
limited number of tickets to attend the performance in person will also be available.
Program dates to be announced. Sign up to our e-news or follow us on social media for all of the latest news.
“It is with a great sense of pride that I look back on the number of composers we have
‘discovered’ since our Composer Development Program began in 2016. Matthew Laing (FQ CDP
2017), Natalie Nicolas (FQ CDP 2017 & 2019), Lee Bradshaw (FQ CDP 2020), and Ella Macens (FQ
CDP 2017), to name a few, are now represented by the Australian Music Centre and creating
multi-faceted careers for themselves. It is no exaggeration to say that the most exciting time
of year is when we get to open the scores & hear what these emerging composers have to say.
The process of learning about people through the music they write never gets old and we look
forward to the new collaborations and voices ahead.”
ZOE KNIGHTON, CELLO
MEET CLARE STRONG, FQ’S 2022-2023 EMERGING COMPOSER IN RESIDENCE
Clare has made quite an impression on us since her participation in our
2017 Composer Development Program. Clare will be writing a new work
commissioned by Julian Burnside AO QC to be premiered by FQ in a
future season.
Clare Strong (née Johnston) has composed works for some of Australia’s
leading performers and ensembles including: the Tasmanian Symphony
Orchestra, the Goldner String Quartet, Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, PLEXUS
and Claire Edwardes among others. Clare has a Masters from the University of
Sydney and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Melbourne. Clare has
received a number of awards including the Doris Burnett Ford Scholarship,
the Esther Rofe Award and the David Henkels Award for Composition.
EDUCATION
FOOTSCRAY HIGH SCHOOL RESIDENCY
In 2019, we began our residency at Footscray High School and it was so successful, we were invited to
continue. Given that most composers reserve their most intimate utterances for chamber music, there are
many opportunities to explore themes that teenagers find relevant: love, oppression, exile, belonging with
students being encouraged to explore the music we play and respond in their chosen medium. (Dance,
drama, visual communication and art.) Exploring the music of Beethoven, Bach and the new generation
of composers through our vignette commissions, this program is inspiring, uplifting and introduces this
intimate world of music to a whole new audience.
The residency program allows for a “… real life exchange between people who are at the top of their game as
musicians and students who have not yet had a way to engage with the music that the Flinders Quartet play.”
PAUL DOOLEY, DIRECTOR OF MUSIC AT FOOTSCRAY HIGH SCHOOL
JOHN NOBLE’S QUARTET PROGRAM (JNQP)
Since 2018, FQ have been Artistic Patrons of John Noble’s Quartet Program (JNQP), and now work with seven
regional Victorian ensembles from Mildura, Bairnsdale, Shepparton, Bendigo, Warrnambool, Traralgon and
Sunshine/Wyndham Vale. FQ presents side by side concerts and ongoing mentoring, culminating in a weekend
that brings all of the ensembles together in a true celebration of the chamber music collaborative spirit.
In 2022, we are launching the Mallee String Quartet as our regional string quartet in residence. Throughout
the year we will coach them, perform with them, and support them in serving the community of Mildura as
their very own established and accomplished string quartet.
“The biggest thing they (FQ) have done for me is in showing me the true joy of playing ensemble
music. They took me away from my fear and feelings of self-consciousness and showed me what
sharing music could really be. And they made our ensemble feel we were worthwhile and capable.
Such a gift and an incredible journey with them. And an honour.”
JOHN NOBLE’S QUARTET PROGRAM PARTICIPANT
STRIKE A CHORD MENTORSHIP
In 2021, we mentored the outstanding Cousin Quartet as winners of the Musica Viva Australia Strike a Chord
‘Flinders Quartet Prize’. It was incredibly inspiring for us to witness the joy and intense love for string
quartet playing at such an early stage in their careers.
“It was the most life changing and inspiring
experience. It really helped me to not only
understand, but really enjoy music.”
HANNA WALLACE
VIOLA, COUSIN QUARTET
“It was an amazing experience and I learned a
lot from the quartet not only from their playing
but also how well they worked together.”
DYLAN COLOMBIS
VIOLIN, COUSIN QUARTET
“One of the best moments of my life so far.
It completely changed my entire outlook on
music, and gave me a newfound passion
for a whole new world of music.”
JAMIE WALLACE
CELLO, COUSIN QUARTET
“It was such a joy to work with the Flinders
Quartet - an absolute privilege to be treated
as complete equals and colleagues rather than
students, and to be immersed in such a fun
and professional environment where
laughs are always welcome.”
BEATRICE COLOMBIS
VIOLIN, COUSIN QUARTET
In 2022, we mentor the Piruli Quartet from South Australia. Keep an eye out as we work with them throughout
the year and even invite them on stage with us for some of our performances.
FQ MARGARET SUTHERLAND FESTIVAL • VILLA ALBA
A concert in the historic rooms of Villa Alba, exploring the history surrounding this magnificent mansion and
the music of local icon, and Australian musical matriarch, Margaret Sutherland.
As we near the completion of our project to record the complete works for string quartet by Margaret
Sutherland for ABC Classic, we have prepared a unique audience experience, combining the history of this
magnificent and sometimes overlooked mansion with the music of a magnificent and overlooked composer.
Sutherland’s music is clever, intriguing, passionate and above all, enduring. The response to our mini
“Margaret Sutherland Festival” in 2021 was so positive with audience members delighting in her individual
musical voice.
Before each concert, a short introduction will provide insight into the history of the rooms and the many
lives of Villa Alba. If only those walls could talk.

HIDDEN THOUGHTS II: RETURN TO SENDER
Following the staggering success of the online premiere in 2020 of Katy Abbott’s “Hidden thoughts II: Return
to Sender”, FQ is touring this monumental work to the Canberra International Festival of Music and MONA
in Hobart. Composed in 2020, this work for string quartet plus narrator and mezzo soprano uses text from
letters written by Australians to asylum seekers in Nauru and Manus Island. They were returned, unopened
to Julian Burnside and remained unread until Katy began the process of reading and collating the many
boxes of envelopes.

the quartet and provides long term sustainability,
ensuring that audiences will continue to enjoy

us with their legacy.
FQ SYNDICATE
Being a part of the creation of new music is a
passion of ours and we know many of you would
love to be part of that process as well.
A new initiative in 2022 is our FQ Syndicate
with the aim of combining forces to enable the
commissioning of new works. The inaugural
campaign was for our vignette commission
project, featuring five exciting emerging
Australian voices.
In recognition of the fact that the joy of
commissioning a work is cost prohibitive for
many, the FQ Syndicate joins the forces of likeminded
lovers of chamber music who contribute
donations of $500 or above towards a specific
project.
Our 2022 FQ Syndicate focus is a new work by
Brenda Gifford.
