Pupils’ video a bid to make
safer routes to school

PUPILS HAVE made a video
and lobbied a community
board in a bid to make roads
near their school safer.
And their pleas seem to be
working.
St Martins School put
a proposal forward to the
Cashmere-Spreydon Community
Board board about
the dangers of crossing roads,
particularly at the Centaurus
Rd roundabout.
Pupils raised concerns of
drivers not stopping or seeing
children on their way to school
during peak traffic hours.
Their solutions were to bring
the school sign closer to the
entrance of the school and
introduce zebra stripes on their
kea crossing.
Board member Tim Scandrett
said they met with the
school and discussed options to
increase road safety which were
passed on to traffic engineers.
Some of these options included
increasing signage and
paintwork to make the roads
look busier which would hopefully
slow cars down.
He said the board have
been trying to ban U-turns
and decrease the speed limit
around schools and was
hoping to have some plans in
place for St Martins School by
Christmas.

Epic fundraising run for Enzo

him more than 23 hours to
complete, and at the end of it all
he wanted was a cup of Irish tea.

with a 3600m
elevation to
raise money
for a Redcliffs
Anthony
Martin
teenager who
suffered a
spinal injury in
early 2020.
Enzo Halliburton, now 18,
was involved in a tragic swimming
accident in Moncks Bay in
January, 2020. While swimming
with friends, Enzo dived into the
water and did not resurface. He
had seriously injured his spine
and his friends had to perform
mouth-to-mouth resuscitation
and call for an ambulance.
Enzo suffered a C5-C7 spinal
injury and is now a tetraplegic.
Martin has a work colleague
whose son was with Enzo that
day. After hearing Enzo’s story,
Martin decided he wanted to do
something to help raise money
to go towards a specialised bike
for Enzo.
This was the first ultra-marathon
distance Martin had ran.
During training, Martin had

what he described as a “drawback”
when he ruptured his
hamstring in two places, tore the
cartilage in his hip and had to get
his Achilles tendon reattached.
On the day of the run,
Martin joined in on part of the
Krayzie K’s ultra trail running
event. The temperature that day
was 27 deg C.
“Being an Irish lad, I’m not
built for heat,” said Martin.
The 100km run took him 23hr
38min. Thinking about Enzo
and what he had gone through is
what got Martin through those
last hours.
“Even in the worst pain that
I was in, it’s still a drop in the
ocean of the reality of being
tetraplegic,” he said.
When he finally crossed the
finish line at 8.25am on Saturday
morning, there was one thing on
Martin’s mind: “All I wanted was
a cup of tea, there was no tea [at
the finish line] so I drove to my
mates and he had some Irish tea
bags, it was perfect.”

has been granted $3000 by

Call for feedback on proposal to lower speed limits

Scarborough and Taylors

proposals.
Residents of those areas are
being encouraged to share their
views on the draft proposals
which are part of the city council’s
Slow Speeds Neighbourhood
programme.

reducing speeds

Sharpen your
painting skills
on park mural

COMMUNITY participation
and connection is the idea
behind a planned mural for
Radley Park.
Starting next week,
Woolston residents will be
rolling up their sleeves to help
paint a mural that will be put up
along the existing fence line at
the park.
Roimata Food Commons
founder, which is located at the
park, Michael Reynolds, felt
as though most public spaces
were heavily under-used as
community spaces.
“People don’t necessarily feel
like the park belongs to them,”
he said.
“We wanted to create a space
for people to feel connected.”
The inspiration behind the
project stems from the postearthquake
street art in central
city. Reynolds said it invited
people to spend more time in
those places admiring the art
and wanted to bring the same to
Woolston.
There will be workshops
running each Saturday from
November 27 at 2-4.30pm.
The community can
contribute a steady hand for
painting the mural designed
by local artist Sandrine Line
Marie.

with their parents and
I think it must be quite scary for
them.”
Senior pupils also went to
the Mobil service station on
Centaurus Rd after school and
they felt it was dangerous trying
to cross the road to get there.
The school released a survey
for parents and pupils about
preferred modes of transport and
found that parents would rather
their children walk or bike to
school if it was safer.

Five artists combine for our new group exhibition ‘Sum of the Parts’
November 27 - December 14; on show for a shorter duration to allow
for all-important Christmas pickup opportunities.
Contributing artists are Christchurch Kara Burrowes and local Little
River sculptor Jane Downes. Jasmine Keir’s studio is in Kerikeri, just up
the road from Dave Green in Rawene, and Debra Powell is from the
rural Waikato hamlet of Te Pahu.
Kara Burrowes is an artist and designer based in Christchurch. Her work
is tactile and experimental. Using recycled wood from demolition sites, she loves
the concept of transforming something quite ordinary into something precious and
alluring. “Through reinterpretation I like to create a new language, often through the
use of pattern and repetition, method and process.”
Debra Powell’s alias in the pottery studio is ‘Little Betty’. Her ceramic work has
strong narrative themes, exploring relationships between people and nature, playing
with convention, and infusing the result with a gentle humour.
Oxidized copper artist Jasmine Keir endeavours to create and understand the
alchemy of colours achievable via her artistic process; one which uses a variety of
natural ingredients to react with and manipulate the finish of her copper works.
Dave Green creates whimsical arrangements; ‘Lightshifter’ sculptures. His art is about changing the form
and shape of found, often discarded, objects - both natural and manmade. Reborn out of pre-loved glass
and crystal, some are lighting devices others are designed to hang in the light.
Sculptor Jane Downes’ delicate themes are fabricated in steel. ‘Arboresque’ a study of tree forms, an
observation of nature’s sacred geometry.”

Miles Warren garden among those
showcased in tour this weekend
TE KURA ō Ōhinetahi
(Governors Bay School) is having
its annual garden tour fundraiser
on Sunday, showcasing 10
gardens in the area.
The money raised will go
towards school activities, sports,
and cultural costs for the next
two years.
School committee board
member Annabelle Wear said:

together to showcase some

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Christmas is a great time for passing down recipes that are tried and true becoming
traditional family favourites. The owner of this recipe says her mum used to make
the pudding on Christmas Eve and would take the bowl and wooden spoon around
everyone in the house to stir the mixture and make a wish.
Make a Wish Christmas Pudding
You will need:
• 1 ½ tbsp butter
• 1 ½ tsp baking soda
• 1 ½ cups of boiling water
• 1 ½ cups flour
• 1 ½ cups mixed fruit or sultanas
• ¾ cup sugar
Method:
1. In a glass or stainless steel bowl,
melt the butter (over hot water)
and dissolve the baking soda.
2. Add the boiling water and
sugar.
3. When cool, add flour and
mixed fruit.
4. Stir all the ingredients together
and make a Christmas wish.
5. Cover bowl with a tea towel and
allow to stand overnight.
The next day:
• Place mixture into a greased
bowl or ice-cream container,
cover with tinfoil and place in a
pot of water, just deep enough
so the bowl doesn’t float.
• Boil pudding for four hours and
check regularly to make sure
the water has boiled dry. Top
up carefully with extra water if
required.
• Serve with heaps of Chantilly
cream!

You will need:
• 1 x bottle of cream
• ½ tsp vanilla essence
• 1 tbsp icing sugar to
sweeten
Method:
Put cream, vanilla essence
and icing sugar in a bowl and
whisk until light and fluffy with
softly formed peaks. Cover and
refrigerate until ready to serve.

Spin class cyclists gear up for off-road trip
CYCLISTS RAY and Judith
Blyth are scheduled to head off
today on a 160km off-road trail
tour, as part of a YMCA’s Life
Fit trip along Central Otago’s
mountain bike trails.
Ray, 79, who is the oldest in the
21-strong group, will cycle the
Roxburgh Gorge, Clutha Gold
and the Lake Dunstan trails over
three days.
Ray and Judith brought their
bikes in 2006 when Ray retired,
with the intention to stay fit and
get around Christchurch. A Life
Fit member for the last 15 years,
Ray has been on four previous
cycle trips with his fellow spin
class participants.
Ray and Judith are very fortunate
for the spin group, which
Ray describes as a mixture of
fitness and companionship.
“We just thank our lucky stars
that we have our health and are
able to do these things,” he said.
“As they say, you’ve got to use
it or lose it.”
Event organiser Jill O’Connor,
said the idea formed from a
desire for members to see cycling
as a lifestyle, not just a class to
take once a week.
“The goal has always been
companionship. We want our
spin members to feel confident
to go out biking on the weekend
with their grandkids and with
friends,” she said.
O’Connor said Life Fit realised
a lot of members were very fit
and proficient on their spin
bikes, but rarely went out on
their regular bikes.
“We find there is a huge sense
of achievement at the end of each
trip, and everyone’s confidence
just keeps building.”
Age is not really a factor for
the team and some of those who
find the trips harder are now using
e-bikes so they can continue
to participate.
The spin class undertakes a
six-week training programme
prior to each trip to get them
well adjusted to cycling outside
of the class and to ensure their
fitness levels match the difficulty
of the planned trips.
The programme prepares them
for riding on off-road tracks and
builds their experience of riding
in a large group.
The team of three support staff
are all experienced cyclists who
have previously led many Life
Fit cycle trips around the South
Island. They have been supporting
the participants through the
training programme and will
cycle alongside them on the trail.
Life Fit is a YMCA programme
targeted at older gym members
or those rehabilitating from
illness or injury. Members
focus on building stamina and
retaining strength through a
range of group exercise and
spin classes.
