THE HISTORY OF THANKSGIVING AS ART

The above illustration is of a painting
completed by Jean Loius Ferris in
1912 one of a series of paintings
commissioned for the Pageant of a
Nation project depicting historical
events in U.S. history to that date.
The title of the painting is “The First
Thanksgiving 1621) alleged to illustrate
the first thanksgiving between the
colonists and the local Native American
tribe the Wampanoag.
Ferris’ painting has a number of
distortions from what historians have
verified actually occurred at the first

get-together between the colonists and
the Indians. The painting indicates that
the Colonists are hosting the event. In
reality, the Wampanoag sponsored
the event. The majority of the food
served at the event was provided by
the Natives. From historical documents,
5 deer, fish, lobster, clams, berries,
pumpkins, and squash were provided
by the Wampanoags. The Colonists
provided water foul found in the area.
There is no record of turkey being
served. Wild turkeys that existed at that
time were not found in that geographic
area.

Back with the future
This Thanksgiving we would like to thank our advertisers and
readers for their many years of support and our readership.
This time was well spent and reflecting on all we shared in the
past 27 year and 25 in print. And now as begin looking to the
future we find renewed hope, compassion and thankfulness in
all we have.
We say back with the future because many of us saw the need to
set our personal goals aside and become caretakers for an ill
nation. We suffered much loss over the last many months and
now hold gratitude that we survived. The LGBT community has
already suffered so much over the years, but it always amazes
me how we come back, more robust and prouder than ever. For
the last 6 months, we have reduced our costs and added more
free and sliding scale pricing for those helping redevelop our
community. Because to us, community matters and we thank
every member that got us here.

The male Native sitting in the center
of the painting is wearing a feather
headdress. Feathers were characteristic
of the Midwestern tribes but were not
used by the Wampanoag tribe or other
Northeastern Wood tribes. The Colonial
woman serving the cross-legged Native
is supposedly serving turkey. Again the
painting appears to show the English
colonists as the hosts of the event and
also indicates the superiority of their
position such as the Natives sitting on
the ground and the colonists sitting on
chairs. Also, the event was initiated
to indicate a friendship between the
English and the Natives, however,
there are a number of weapons shown
throughout the painting indicating a
probable paranoia of distrust between
the parties.
Regardless of the accuracy of the
painting depicting the food items
turkey is now a staple of the traditional
Thanksgiving celebration. Numerous
artists have included the turkey in their
depiction of the Thanksgiving feast.
Norman Rockwell’s painting of the
family Thanksgiving event is probably
one of the most recognized paintings
of the holiday. Grandparents serving
a huge turkey to a family gathered
around a dining table. Norman
Rockwell became one of the most
prolific artists of historical events and
humorously depicted everyday events.
Many of these paintings were used as
covers or illustrations, especially for the
Saturday Evening Post.

What is not widely known is the gay
artist J.C. Leyendecker, was a primary
mentor of Norman Rockwell to which
Rockwell readily acknowledged.
Layendeckers illustrations graced the
cover of Saturday Evening Post prior
to Rockwell’s work. Leyendecker
slyly injected sexual inuendos into
many of his illustrations some with a
wink and a nod aimed at similarities
to everything from grandmothers to
cherubs. His paintings along with their
humor also typically depicted the male
as a handsome knockout. The two
reproductions shown of the Saturday
Evening Post cover illustrations from
the WWI era show a cherub preparing
to carve a large turkey with the other
illustrating a strutting soldier in a WWI
uniform leading a turkey on a leash.
The popularity of Walt Disney’s
characters also found their way

DAVID ROTH DONATES $100 FOR PEACE POLE
BRONZE PLAQUE
David Roth who was the very popular
Democratic Nominee for Congress in the
Coachella Valley in 2006 donated funds to
help pay for the bronze plaque at the Fallen
Marine Corps Corporal Hunter Lopez Peace
Pole. The Peace Pole is located outside
of Shea’s Veterans Center in Desert Hot
Springs. The ten inch by seven inch bronze
plaque was installed yesterday by Post 66
Adjutant Randy Schecher.
David now lives with his family in Vermont.
David has donated to our efforts in the
past. Randy said yesterday he is helping
to prepare the Thanksgiving meal for the
Veterans that live at the veterans center
owned and operated by our dear blessed
friend Judy Shea.The first Peace Pole that
Veterans For Peace (VFP) donated was
inspired by late Cathedral City Mayor Greg
Pettis. That Peace Pole was outside of the
Cathedral City Library. The Peace Pole and
bronze plaque was temporarily moved while
the front of the library was transformed. Tami
Scott from Cathedral City said yesterday
that the Peace Pole has been repainted
and we will hold a re-dedication ceremony
when the pole is returned to its place
outside of the library in the next few weeks.
Next month Tom will speak before the
Rancho Mirage City Council. Tom will
present the council members with a
miniature Peace Pole. We hope the City will
designate a place for a new Peace Pole
somewhere in Rancho Mirage. Discussions
have also been in the works for a Peace

Pole at the Mosque in Indio as well as a
Peace Pole in Yucca Valley.

Ed Westrick, a member of VFP who paid for

Ed was the leader of the gay veterans
organization in Los Angeles.

To most of us, the year-end holidays
are a time of family, friends and a lot of
food. While these times can be hectic
with all of the running around that
needs to be done, these are also the
best times to start a family cookbook
project says one expert.
