Nationality: Finnish
Date of birth: 17.10.1968
Family: Married; 2 children born on 9 th July 2004 and 7 th August, 2007.
Address: National Institute for Aquatic Resources (Section of Ocean Ecology and Climate), Technical
University of Denmark, Kavalergården 6, DK-2920 Charlottenlund, Denmark
E-mail address: mak@aqua.dtu.dk
Languages: (More or less) fluent in Finnish, Swedish, English, Dutch, French and Danish.
Occupation: Senior scientist at the National Institute for Aquatic Resources
Scientific focus: My research concentrates on two central questions of the pelagic food webs, namely the
trophic transfer efficiency, and the sedimentation / remineralisation balance of the water column. These two
processes have a central role in determining, respectively, the food availability for planktivorous fish, and the
efficiency of the ocean’s biological pump. More specifically, my work focuses on brackish water and marine
copepods and their role as consumers in aquatic food webs and in degradation of marine snow particles.
Education:
2007: Qualification as an associate professor (docent). Faculty of Biosciences, University of
