HOUSE UPDATE
BEFORE
AFTER
Our House kitchen and
dining room received a
makeover this Fall – new
flooring, new paint, and
new equipment!
With 36 bedrooms, we are
always looking for fresh
ways to serve our families
while providing a clean
and beautiful “home away
from home.”
“It’s truly a gift to be a
mother…I thought I
couldn’t have children
and now I am blessed
with two.”
Bithiah, Jeremiah and Isaiah’s mom
The first time you experience something new there are questions, unknowns,
and uncertainties and this was the case for Bithiah. She’d enjoyed good health
and her first pregnancy brought much anticipation and excitement, especially
with the news that she was carrying twins. The pregnancy was going as
planned until her water broke early at only 25 weeks. Bithiah was placed on
bedrest to delay the deliveries as much as possible, and a few short days later,
Jeremiah and Isaiah arrived. Being born 14 weeks early at only two pounds
each meant a long stay in the NICU while Bithiah was discharged and
challenged with commuting from Lexington, NC to see the boys. Her medical
team referred her to our RMHC® and she was amazed by the hospitality and
services offered at our House. It became her respite – a place to relax and
unwind, and a place she could write about the twins and their journey. Bithiah
kept a journal detailing the boys’ first weight gains, first breaths of room air,
first hand-holds, first snuggles, and other milestones.
“I’ve learned how strong I can be and that’s the
biggest personal take-away from this experience.”
She continued, “…and being mom to two is
unbelievable! I am so happy!”
When asked what advice she would give other
families experiencing a journey through the NICU,
Bithiah said “everyone’s path is different…you have
to be open-hearted about everything, and don’t be
afraid to feel – the nurses, doctors, and Ronald
McDonald House® staff are there to help you.”
CHUCK’S CORNER
Life will never be the same. This statement was driven home to me recently by two powerful reminders: The
20 th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on our country and the return to pandemic mode due to the COVID
Delta variant. Since 9/11/01 air travel and security measures at large events have not been the same and it
seems that the annual list of required vaccinations is growing while mask wearing is almost routine for the
foreseeable future. Life will never be the same. But I’m also reminded of what has remained the same: The
immediate human response to help those impacted by these catastrophic events. Like the first responders who
ran towards the Twin Towers, medical providers have worked to keep us as safe as possible from COVID.
Researchers and scientists have developed vaccines at breakneck speed and many individuals have been
vaccinated to protect themselves and others!
You – our donors and volunteers – are part of those first responders who immediately rush in to help people in
need. You know that for our families who are dealing with a child’s medical challenges, life will never be the
same. Your generosity enables these families to fully support their child while they stay at their “home away
from home”. They also access our Family Room and Hospitality Cart programs by taking a quiet break from
their child’s bedside to recharge themselves
and enjoy a simple cup of coffee with a
friendly (masked) face and a listening ear!
Thank you for being part of the RMHC®
Piedmont Triad first responders. Thank you
for being HEROES to the families we serve!
One final note, please join me in thanking the
staff of RMHC Piedmont Triad for being fully
vaccinated along with our active volunteers.
Together we protect the families we serve in
any way we can!

EXPANDING OUR FAMILY...ROOMS
We proudly announce the opening of our Ronald McDonald
Family Room at the Women’s & Children’s Center at Moses
Cone Hospital! A mini ribbon cutting was held in September
to officially open the Family Room which is an exciting new
chapter for the Ronald McDonald House Charities® of the
Piedmont Triad, Inc.
Kudos to the Cone Health team, RMHCPT staff, and the
ADDS Love Foundation: Adrian Smith, Danielle Smith,
Debra Smith, and James “Smitty” Smith. The Foundation has
endowed the Family Room to provide refreshments for
guests in perpetuity. The Cone Health Family Room is a
beautiful, safe place of respite for families to recharge so they
can better support their child.
Join our Cone Health Family Room Volunteer Team!

Although siblings are
not able to stay in our
House during COVID,
we’ve brought Medical
Play to them!
Personalized adapted
baby dolls provide
curious brothers and
sisters with an
interactive experience
to demonstrate the
medical needs of their
newborn sibling.
Involving all family
members in these
medical journeys helps
everyone to cope better.
It’s a mom!
Being a first-time mom
is challenging,
especially with a
medically fragile baby.
Introducing our “New
Mom” baskets! We
celebrate our first-time

gifts for them and
their newborns when
they check-in to our

SCRAPBOOK
The Kohfedlt Family Playground’s Oodle Swing is a fan favorite for our kiddos! Layla spent hours playing on
the swing and making music on our xylophones and chimes.
The Newsome family has stayed with us at various times over
the past 18 years. Dylan has literally grown up at our House
where he’s a reigning BINGO champ, an honorary therapy dog
handler, and artist-in-residence. Upon turning 21, Dylan
“graduated” from our House.
Huge shoutout to the High Point University Men’s Soccer Team and the Winston-Salem State University
Football, Softball, and Volleyball teams for bagging almost 3,000 bags of sand in two days! As the saying goes,
“many hands make the work light.”
