• By Fiona Ellis
BRAD HELPS often takes his young children to Halswell’s
Westbrooke Park playground, but by next summer this may no
longer be possible.
Play equipment built in the 1980s and 1990s is reaching the
end of its lifespan in Westbrooke Park, Shamrock Reserve, Wales
Reserve and Ridder Reserve, and it may be removed but not
replaced in two of these locations.

COMING SOON: Road names that reflect Māori heritage have been approved for the planned 10.1-hectare Mataī Springs subdivision at 68 Quaifes Rd.
Street names changed to reflect heritage
FOUR STREETS in a planned
Halswell subdivision will bear
Māori names following concerns
the names originally proposed
did not reflect local heritage.
The 10.1-hectare Mataī Springs
subdivision at 68 Quaifes Rd
is now set to contain Kākā Pl,
Toetoe St, Horopito St and
Kēkēwai Pl.
These names replace the names
Rush Close, Wineberry St,
Springhead St and Yellow Wood
Pl, originally proposed
by developers Fletcher
Living.
Co-Secretary of the Halswell
Residents’ Association David
Hawke said he was pleased the
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board approved the
new names.
“The names that they’ve
approved are a big improvement
on the ones that were originally
put forward.”
The residents association was
trying to build awareness of the
area’s heritage, he said.
“The original names that were
put forward, they didn’t respect
enough the mana whenua, the
people who lived here.”
The community board also
approved the name Cress St in
place of Canopy St, while Mataī
Springs Drive and Fauna St
remain unchanged.
The issue was first raised by
Hawke in an October meeting
of the board, during which he
asked members not to approve
the initially proposed names.
A decision on the issue was
then delayed to allow time for
consultation.
The developer subsequently
met with board members and
representatives of the residents’
association and agreed to
reconsider the requested naming
options.
Community and stakeholder
manager Mark Doyle updated
the board of the steps taken to
consult with the community
during the meeting in which
the revised names were
approved.
He noted not all naming
options discussed with locals
were available or suitable.
In both the initial and revised
name requests, the names were
themed for the flora and fauna
of wetlands, as the developers
are also creating a wetland in the
area.
Fletcher Living declined to
comment.

Jayne and I would like to thank you for the work you’ve done to get us where
we are today. Bit of a blur really. Every step in the process has gone into
achieving the result today that exceeded our expectations. The detail and
professionalism has been on point. Staging, photography, the video along
with the marketing campaign all leading to a great property to present to
the market. These aspects all set the scene perfectly for the open homes and
visits leading to today’s outstanding auction result. Quiet night tonight but
sure there will be a few celebratory drinks later in the week.

Submissions support cycleway
• By Fiona Ellis
THE MAJORITY of 424
submissions support the third
and final section of the Nor’west
Arc Cycleway, a city council
analysis has revealed.
Just 12 per cent of submitters
opposed the construction of
the cycleway, which would link
Canterbury University to Jellie
Park and Harewood Rd, and
a further 23 per cent were
neutral.
However, design details
divided the submitters on the
project, which has received $10.5
million in funding as part of
the Government ‘shovel ready’
projects.
Safety and parking were
frequent concerns.
Submitters were split on the
two proposed designs for Ilam
Rd.
A one-way cycleway on each
side of the road was favoured
by 55 per cent of submitters
who selected an option, while
45 per cent preferred a two-way
cycleway on the west side of the
road.
Of those who supported
the first option, safety was a
common reason, cited by 32
submitters.
Ilam Rd residents W and PJ
Gilroy said it was obviously the
safer option.
“We will only have to look one
way for approaching cyclists as
we exit our drive and we will

University lecturer Mads
Thomsen, who said he cycled to
the university every day, called
the first option “1000 times
better, safer, and more efficient”
as it would reduce the need for
cyclists to cross the road.
The need to retain parking
spaces was a popular reason

Guy Mortlock favoured a twoway

in the area, especially with high
demand from students.
“It is important to retain as

Safety was also cited as a factor
by 12 submitters who preferred
the second option.

the west side of the road was
preferred by 62 per cent of
submitters who selected an
option, while 38 per cent
preferred a shared path on the
west side of the road.
Safety was a top concern by
those who preferred the first
option, cited by 40 submitters.
For example, submitter Paul
Ainsworth said a shared path
would be disastrous.
“Having scooters, cycles etc
travelling at 30km/h in the same
area as pedestrians will only lead
to serious accidents,” he said.
Fourteen submitters who
chose this option also wanted to
avoid poor user behaviour they
believed would be an issue with a
shared path.
Submitter Richard Ibbitt
said his experience with shared
pathways had not been good.
“The pedestrian usually has
to give way to cyclists, not all of
whom seem to appreciate that
a shared space means that all
parties using the pathways have
to be equally considerate.”
Although the second option
of a shared path was less
popular overall, all of those who
lived along this section of the
route and made a choice between
the two designs selected this
option.
Maintaining on-road car
parking was the reason cited
by 30 submitters who chose
this option.

Final decision expected next year
Aorangi Rd resident Emma
King stated loss of car parking
was a concern.
However, safety was also cited
by five submitters who prefer
this option, including student
Aestival Britten, who travelled on
Aorangi Rd most days.
“Shared paths provide a good
option as there’s enough space
for cyclists to pass slower scooter
users and scooter users to pass
slower pedestrians without
jostling for space,” Britten said.
The planned design for the
intersection of Aorangi and
Wairakei Rds also caused a
divide among the 53 submitters
who shared their opinions.
The design put to the public
would stop through traffic and
right turns for cars travelling in
either direction along Aorangi
Rd.
Twenty-one submitters supported
the design, citing safety
benefits.
Kathy Beswick said she liked to
cycle but that the current intersection
was horrendous and she
avoided using it
“I fully support this aspect of
the plan,” Beswick said.
However, more submitters opposed
the design, with 25 people
objecting due to access issues and
predicting traffic on side roads
would increase.
Submitter Alastair Christie
said strongly opposed the blocking
off through traffic and traffic
turning right.
“This intersection as this will
make it much more difficult for
me to access a large part of my
city,” Christie said.
The cycleway section has
received $10.5 million in funding
as part of the Government ‘shovel
ready’ projects.
The cycleway hearing panel is
set to make its recommendation
to the urban development and
transport committee early next
year, with the committee to make
the final decision.
A report included in the
agenda of the hearings panel by
city council senior engagement
adviser Tessa Zant requested the
panel to recommend a one-way
cycleway is installed on each side
of Ilam Rd, varying between 1.8
and 2m wide.
It also requested a 4m shared
path from the corner of Jellie
Park up to Truman Rd, and from
there a 3m two-way cycleway
along Aorangi Rd to
the intersection with Wairakei
Rd.
The report recommended the
intersection remain closed to
through traffic and right-turning
traffic.
If the project is approved, work
is expected to begin in mid to
late 2022.
Community feedback would
contribute to concept plans
• From page 1
The city council is asking for
community input on the use
of space in the area, located
inside the city’s fastest-growing
suburb. Last year 14 per cent of
new housing consents by the city
council were for Halswell builds.
Feedback on the playgrounds is
open until December
13, and Helps planned
to share his views.
He only supported
removing some play
areas if others were
not just replaced but
expanded, he said.
“Otherwise you’ve
just got more kids and
less playgrounds, I
don’t think that would
be good.”
Westbrooke Park playground
was old, but this did not worry
him as long as it was safe.
City council community parks
manager Al Hardy said it might
be better to upgrade playgrounds
in two parks and have more open
space in the other two.
“We only have a limited pool
of money to spend on these four
reserves and we want to make
sure that we spend it in a way that
meets the needs of local families,”
Hardy said.
Head of parks Andrew
Rutledge said the four parks were
located close to each other.
“Ridder Reserve is 220m from
Westbrooke Park, Westbrooke
Anne
Galloway
Park is 180m from Wales Reserve
and Wales Reserve is 320m from
Shamrock Reserve,” Rutledge
said.
“We have an opportunity to
improve quality and variety of
play equipment in these parks,
while keeping play within
walking distance of homes.
“As an outcome
some equipment could
be removed and not
replaced.”
Community feedback
would contribute to a
concept plan for each
park, and the Halswell-
Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board would
be asked to approve the
plans next May, he said.
“The concept plans will
be implemented with
construction expected late 2022
to early 2023.”
Halswell Ward councillor
Anne Galloway said needs had
changed in the decades since the
equipment was built, although
this did not mean all equipment
should be thrown out.
However, playing in nature
without equipment dictating
what children could do was
beneficial.
“Being more creative in what
we offer our children is good, I
think,” Galloway said.
New reserve areas would meet
the needs of new subdivisions,
she said.

THE CREATIVITY of Hornby
school children has helped raise
about $1500 to support children
with cancer.
The Festival of Flowers was
held on Saturday, giving pupils
from Gilberthorpe Primary, St
Bernadettes Primary, Hornby
Primary, South Hornby Primary
and Hornby High School the opportunity
to display their floral
creations to the community for a
gold coin entry fee.
Exhibits ranged from floral
arrangements to plant-themed
Bloomin’ good day at flower festival
drawings, models and poetry.
Wigram Lions helped organise
the event to support Camp Quality’s
2022 summer camp, and
also raffled hampers with items
gifted by local businesses.
Youth team chairman Syd
Horgan said the event had a
“feel-good factor” for adults as
well as children.
“For many, it’s been some time
since they were at school, and
they were literally blown away
by the talents of many students,”
Horgan said.
The Covid-19 pandemic posed
an extra challenge, causing the
festival to be pushed back from
the original October date.
It was not easy to hold such
an event amid other end-of-year
events and the Lions appreciated
the effort of principals and
teachers, he said.
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR: Visitors take in the Festival of Flowers on
Saturday.
FUNDRAISER: South Hornby
School’s Mackenzie was one of many
pupils to contribute to a bid to raise
money for Camp Quality.
COLOURFUL: Hornby Primary School

arrangement.

Time to
celebrate
all our
successes
Kia ora koutou. Talofa. Kia Orana. Malo e
lelei. Bula Vinaka. Fakaalofa atu. Namaste.
Kumusta. Haere mai haere mai ki Te Kura
Huruhuru Ao o Horomaka. Warm greetings to
the Hornby High School community.
As always, this is my favourite time of year. I
love celebrating the success of others, and we
have seen some fabulous successes from our
students this year. We celebrated the best in
academic, sporting, and cultural success at
our prize giving last week. We are so proud
of the number of students who have gained
university scholarships for 2022, and as we
celebrated our leavers it was amazing to see
the number of students whose intention is to
follow a course of university study in 2022.
University study isn’t the right pathway for
everyone, and we also see many students
who are passionate about following their own
pathway into trades training too.
Similarly our school sports teams have had
a great summer sports season, with success
across a range of codes. We are very grateful
for the coaches from both within and outside
the school who nurture and support our
young people in their sporting activities. I was
particularly gratified to receive an approach
from a group of prominent Hornby volleyball
players intent on putting even more energy
and “zip” into our volleyball programme. They
well remember the halcyon days of national
prominence for Hornby volleyball.
I commented at our prize giving that we need
to remember that success comes in many
forms, and is different things for different
people. In this age of significant mental
challenge for so many, there are those for
whom simply functioning on a daily basis
is a significant achievement. Recognising
this range of different people, my greatest
encouragement to all of our rangatahi is
that they aspire to be the best version of
themselves that they can be. That is the best
that any one of us can ask.
In the meantime, thank you to everyone in our
community who has supported us. I would
like to take this opportunity to wish you all a
great Christmas season and a safe and restful
summer.

Rewards for commitment
and effort at prizegiving
On Wednesday, November 17,
we held our Senior Prizegiving.
This is always a very special
event on the Hornby High
School calendar and although
our format was considerably
different, the occasion was no
less auspicious.
Unfortunately we were unable
to allow an audience to attend,
which meant that for the
first time whānau could not
watch their tamariki receive
their awards. However, we
were lucky enough to have
Mr Carter behind the camera
streaming the event via a
GoogleMeet, allowing whānau
and our junior students to
watch.
Congratulations to all of our
prizewinners on a highly
successful school year.

ILLUMINATING: Carl Seaward spends $55,000 each year on his Christmas light show, reportedly one of the biggest of its kind in Australasia.
PHOTOS: GEOFF SLOAN
Christmas wonderland switched on
CARL SEAWARD has a vision. He wants
to see people, young and old, experience
the joy of Christmas.
So, at his Shands Rd home, the retired
60-year-old has reportedly built one of the
biggest interactive displays of its type in
Australasia.
Every year, tens of thousands of
Cantabrians flock to Seaward’s property
in Prebbleton. He flicked the switch to
open his Christmas wonderland for the
2021 season on Saturday night.
“This is a lightshow, of which you are
actually a part of, you are in the middle of
it. That’s unique,” Seaward said.
And in spite of so many Christmasrelated
events being cancelled this year,
Seaward has vowed to soldier on.
“Gotta do it, gotta do it, no matter
what happens. Okay, work in with the
restrictions, but make it happen for
everybody,” he said.
“I love life, and I love the joy this
experience actually brings to so many
people.”
On opening night, the light show
attracted more than 800 people, despite
the rain.
“Everyone was very enthusiastic and
very excited, everyone we talked to were
loving it.”
Seaward’s partner Maureen passed away
one year ago after a long battle with motor
neurone disease. He wants to continue
her legacy and raise awareness for the
untreatable disease.
“Maureen was by my side right from
day one with this. We always used to tell
people, this whole thing started because
34 years ago she started collecting the
Christmas Santa bears. And that’s how
her collection outgrew the house.”
The keen handyman said the show is
different each year, as he can only display
about 15 per cent of his collection.
“I’m good for another 10 years. By that
stage I might be finding it a bit hard to be
climbing up and down on the roofs but,
as long as I can, I’m going to keep it
going.”
He said the entry fee of $10 per adult
and $5 per child helps towards the cost of
funding the lights, which he spent $55,000
on each year.
The light show is on every day, 8.30-
11.30pm, wet or fine, to December 30,
including Christmas Day.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Christmas is a great time for passing down recipes that are tried and true becoming
traditional family favourites. The owner of this recipe says her mum used to make
the pudding on Christmas Eve and would take the bowl and wooden spoon around
everyone in the house to stir the mixture and make a wish.
Make a Wish Christmas Pudding
You will need:
• 1 ½ tbsp butter
• 1 ½ tsp baking soda
• 1 ½ cups of boiling water
• 1 ½ cups flour
• 1 ½ cups mixed fruit or sultanas
• ¾ cup sugar
Method:
1. In a glass or stainless steel bowl,
melt the butter (over hot water)
and dissolve the baking soda.
2. Add the boiling water and
sugar.
3. When cool, add flour and
mixed fruit.
4. Stir all the ingredients together
and make a Christmas wish.
5. Cover bowl with a tea towel and
allow to stand overnight.
The next day:
• Place mixture into a greased
bowl or ice-cream container,
cover with tinfoil and place in a
pot of water, just deep enough
so the bowl doesn’t float.
• Boil pudding for four hours and
check regularly to make sure
the water has boiled dry. Top
up carefully with extra water if
required.
• Serve with heaps of Chantilly

Start a new
Christmas tradition
What could be better than starting some new family traditions this year? Christmas traditions are memories
in the making and help spread a little festive cheer whether with your loved ones or out in the community.
10 great ideas to help make Christmas a magical time of the year
1. Create a Christmas playlist with some of
your favourite carols and songs – play it
loud and every day, if that’s your thing.
Or plan a pre-Christmas sing-along
evening – don’t forget to supply the song
sheet so everyone can join in too.
2. Get into the spirit of Christmas by getting
together with family or friends to help
decorate each other’s houses – turn up
the music, drink the wine and go all out
to deck the halls.
3. Make and send homemade Christmas
cards – there’s nothing more exciting
than getting mail, right? Or how about
writing some generic ones and dropping
them into your nearest retirement
home to brighten up an elderly person’s
Christmas.
4. Buy your family Christmas tee-shirts or
Santa hats to wear on the day and don’t
forget to take a family selfie.
5. Fill a shoebox with gifts for a child, wrap
it with a bow, and deliver to the nearest
community gift tree – check with your
local library and label with age and
gender.
6. Have a yearly family, friends or neighbour
outdoor games night with drinks and
nibbles leading up to the big day – think
Pétanque, hoopla, mini golf, giant chess,
or croquet.
7. Take a leaf out of Iceland’s traditional
‘Jolabokaflod’ or Christmas Book Flood,
and give a book as a gift on Christmas
Eve each year – don’t forget to write
inside the cover who it’s from and the
date.
8. Make a list of must see Christmas movies
to watch a week before Christmas day
Beautiful range

gifts instore
• Replacement batteries
fitted from $10
• Strap replacement
and tick off the ones you’ve watched.
Don’t forget the popcorn and hot
chocolate or nibbles and wine.
9. Make and give a handmade ornament
as a gift each year – the lucky receiver’s
Christmas tree will be covered with
beautiful, handmade memories.
10. Make homemade hot chocolate on
Christmas Eve or on Christmas morning
to drink while the presents are being
opened – decorate with whipped cream,
grated chocolate, marshmallows, or
crushed candy canes.
