with Simon Negus
A warm welcome to Southall for today's
Cherry Red Records Combined Counties
League Premier Division North fixture.
Hello everyone and welcome to today’s combined
counties fixture against Southall.
We coming to this game on the back of two straight
league wins and hope to see this run continue
although high-flying Southall are bound to be difficult
opponents today.
Like everyone else I have been following the
developments on the Covid front carefully in the past
week or so. Fortunately they tightening restrictions do
not seem to be impacting on grassroots football at the
moment but it is a good reminder to all of us to
continue taking sensible precautions where we can –
nobody wants anymore fixtures being cancelled!
We have a really busy few weeks planned at Ascot
United - as well as lots of private parties we will be
organising Christmas get-togethers for all of our
junior members in their age groups. This gives all of
the parents coaches and players a chance to come
together before Christmas and to celebrate the first
half of the season. With 80 junior teams at the club
you can imagine that this requires a great deal of
organising and I would like to publicly thank Sam, Lisa
and Joe in particular for all of their hard work behindthe-scenes.
We also have a fantastic Berks and Bucks cup fixture
to look out to look forward to against Maidenhead.
This was originally due to be played this week but due
to issues in the Maidenhead camp it has now been
rearranged for the 21st of December which will be be
our final game before Christmas. Please put this in
your diaries as it is expected to be a fantastic game
and we look forward to welcoming a big crowd to The
Racecourse.
I hope you all enjoy the game today. Simon

FROM THE DUGOUT
Welcome to the players, officials
and supporters of Southall. Enjoy
the game!
Jamie Tompkins
First Team Manager
Hello and welcome to Southall FC players, staff and club committee and to all
supporters in attendance for this afternoons Combined Counties Premier North
fixture.
We are looking forward to a very competitive match against our opposition today
who are in fine form and one of the favourites to win promotion. Their recent form
has been brilliant with many clean sheets to boast too.
The quality and effort today must be matched and we cannot forget the result on
the opening day of the season which will provide us with much needed
motivation.
Last weekend, we comfortably run out 3-0 winners against CB Hounslow and a
goal from Keaton August, who has been in great form and deserved his goal for
his efforts and commitment recently.
Thank you to our sponsors, club officials and volunteers for all the fantastic work
and ongoing support towards our football club.
Enjoy the game! Jamie
ON COURSE!
With Programme Editor Neal Jeffs
Welcome to the players, officials and
supporters of Southall for this Cherry Red
Records Combined Counties League
Premier Division North match.
Happy
reading, and
enjoy the
game! Neal
A warm welcome to our friends from Southall today for what is likely to be a tough
game for The Yellamen. Southall brought us down to earth in our 2nd game of the
season with a crushing 5-0 win so hopefully we can build on our win last week and
gain some revenge! Southall come into the game on an eight-match winning run
since a Middlesex County Cup defeat against Hayes and Yeading in mid-October, and
with them also still being in the FA Vase, their 150th anniversary season could just yet
be one of their best! Their decorated history goes back to 1871 and is spread across 3
pages of this programme – they were one of the powerhouses of non-league football
and once played in front of over 19,000 fans in the FA Cup 3rd round! Back to Ascot,
and we’ve got a few players approaching milestones. Jonny Denton has now made 197
appearances for the club, George Lock is on 147, and Dan Bailey is just 2 away form a
half-century. Meanwhile, Laffers’ recent scoring form has taken him back onto a goala-game
for the season having now netted 22 goals in 22 games.
Proper Football Ground!
Southall's old Western Road Ground,
their home until 1992. This is
Southall's 150th anniversary season
but have spent the last 30 years of it
ground-sharing.
Looking back on last week, Dave Thompson has rounded up the Allied U18’s
recent match in this edition as they leapt to 2nd in the table with games in hand
on leaders Westfield, and looking ahead we now have a new date for
Maidenhead’s visit in the County Cup which should be a great occasion here
under the lights for another local derby (21st December). This is also FA Cup
weekend so it will be interesting to see how some of the non-league sides get on.
Tow of them will definitely be in the third round (Borehamwood v St Albans,
Kidderminster v Halifax) but I am also watching sixth-tier Buxton (v Morecambe)
to see if they can keep their heroic run going. There really must be something in
the water up there! Finally let’s get behind the lads today and next weekend at
Virginia Water; for one thing it surely can’t be as cold as it was at CB Hounslow
last week!!! Neal

ASCOT UNITED ALLIED U18
Under the stewardship of Josh Nice and his management team, the Ascot
United Allied U18s have kicked off the 12th season of Allied Counties
football at The Racecourse. Josh, the manager, has himself represented The
Yellamen at Allied Counties, U23 and First Team levels.
Ascot United 2
Wokingham
and
Emmbrook
Tuesday 23rd November - Ascot United 2-1 Wokingham - U18 Allied Counties
South After the battling draw away to Westfield, Ascot were at home on the Racecourse to
second placed Wokingham who had beaten the young yellamen 5-0 only a few weeks
earlier.
Immediately the young yellamen showed they were not prepared to accept the
previous result and a strong, battling and resilient performance ensued.
The yellamen went ahead on 14 mins when Alex Hall was sent clear and coolly beat
the keeper. Ascot continued to press and squandered a number of good chances to
extend their lead but arrived at half time one to the good and disappointed that they
were not further ahead. With manager Nice ensuring the pace and passion stayed
strong Ascot continued where they left off and it wasn’t long before Hall completed
his brace for the night with another well taken finish.
As the second half progressed it seemed only a matter of time before Ascot scored
again but they failed to take a number of opportunities to do so. With 15 mins to go
Wokingham got themselves back in the game when their CF took the ball in to the
area and on beating 3 weak tackles slid the ball in to make it 2-1. A nervy last few
minutes ensued after it appeared Ascot had been cruising to a comfortable win but a
battling defensive display ensured the game stayed at 2-1 and the young Yellamen
avenged their league defeat earlier in the season.
ASCOT UNITED ALLIED U18 (CONTINUED)
Allied Counties YL South
Monday 29th November - Abbey Rangers 1-5 Ascot United - U18 Allied Counties
After South. the great win of the previous week against Wokingham, the Ascot u18 Allied lads arrived at Abbey
Rangers full of confidence.
The cold winter chill was in full force as the game kicked off and it was Abbey who started off brighter albeit
In a scrappy first 25 mins. With Ascot struggling to dominate as they had previously against Wokingham the
week before and finding it difficult to create anything, Abbey Rangers took a deserved lead. From a corner
the ball was initially cleared but when Ascot failed to close down, a strike from the edge of the box from
Abbey Rangers flew in to the net giving Docherty in goal no chance. With Ascot subsequently under
pressure and struggling to respond, a ball was lifted hopefully forward over the top of the Abbey defence
and Striker Hall ran on to it and from 18 yards hit a fantastic volley over the keeper and in off the near post to
get ascot back on level terms. The goal seemed to rejuvenate the Ascot boys and a few minutes later a
great run and cross from Ollie Mann was met in the box by Hall who clipped it in to the net for his and Ascot’s
second of the night!
At half time with the scores 2-1 to Ascot the travelling Yella faithful seemed relieved to be ahead at the
break.
Ascot started quickly in the second half and another run by Mann immediately from the restart almost
enabled Ascot to get their third seconds after the restart! Even with some strange decisions from the
referees assistant Ascot continued to look in control with Sam Evans running the midfield!
With Abbey keeping 3 up front, Ascot had a succession of corners and from one of these Walden, up from
the back, about 10 yards out, cleverly and powerfully hooked a ball over his head and past the despairing
keeper. From this point Ascot then dominated and Abbey began to get frustrated picking up a couple of
bookings.
On 67 mins a good move by ascot started by debutant Hugo South who had only come on 6 minutes earlier,
freed Jack McCart marauding down the left from his full back position, beating 2 men and from a tight angle
he rifled the ball with a left footed rasper into the far top corner to make it 4-1.
A fifth goal came soon after when Walden hit his second from another corner, rising high above the defence
planting a powerful header past the flat footed keeper.
A number of substitutions from both sides, including 2 more debuts from current under 16 players, and a
few feisty tackles from the hosts in the last 15 mins finished the game - a resounding 5-1 win for the young
Yellamen!
Up to second with 3 successive home games to come and 4 games in hand of the leaders means The Young
Yellamen are well in contention to challenge for honours!
MATCH REPORT ROUNDUP
HARRY AT THE DOUBLE AS ASCOT EASE PAST HOUNSLOW
Laflin brace sets Yellamen on way to 3-0 win
Saturday 27th November 2021 - Cherry Red Records Premier Division North -
CB Hounslow 0 - 3 Ascot United
Harry Laflin scored two and Keaton August bagged another as Ascot United beat CB Hounslow 3-0
on Saturday. In Baltic conditions, the Yellamen were worthy winners, bouncing back from their
midweek league cup exit in style.
Ascot were well on top in the first half and it took them just seven minutes to take the lead
following a fine team goal. George Lock and August linked up on the left, Sean McCormack played
the ball back to man-of-the-match James Harper, and Harper’s delicious, hanging cross was met
with an equally delicious cushioned header by Harry Laflin, which looped over home ‘keeper Zack
Basey.
At the other end, Rolly Illunga couldn’t make the most of a half-chance after Thomas Kanek and
Ademola Larukma had combined in the build-up, but after that it was a comfortable ride for Ascot
despite being forced into an early chance when Louis Bouwers limped off shortly after that goal.
Laflin planted a header wide from McCormack’s cross – arguably an easier chance than his first –
but made amends just before the half-hour mark with an overhead kick after Dan Bailey had
headed Tom Scott’s free kick back across goal.
The second half was more uncomfortable for the Yellamen who were scrappy for long spells,
although credit to the hosts who rallied and indeed struck the angle of post and bar just after the
hour mark.
But Ascot should have scored and hit the woodwork themselves when, after great work from
Taylor Morgan in the middle, August’s cross put the ball on a plate for McCormack who somehow
managed to thump the crossbar from close range, before Laflin’s thunderous follow-up was
heroically charged down by defender Andy Morris.
The hosts’ next and final real chance of setting up a grandstand finish ended when substitute
Amari Morgan slashed wide after a promising run by Baruwa – although Sam Gray was on hand to
make an awkward save form Jordan Ireland later on – but it was Ascot who wrapped it up four
minutes from time when August tucked the ball home first-time from McCormack’s right-wing
cross.
Ascot United Ladies lost 2-0 at Abingdon Town – a result which leaves
them in 5th place in the Southern Region Women’s Football League. The
Abbots led 1-0 at the break, before first-half substitute Chloe Ball
wrapped the game up in the 70th minute to leave Darrel Evans’ side
winless in three.
Meanwhile, it’s getting crazy, but the Ascot United Ladies Reserves
extended their winning sequence to 22 games. Captain Courtney
CLUB HISTORY - ASCOT UNITED
Ascot United as we know it, was founded in 1965 by a men’s team who played their games at Sunninghill with “after
match meetings” in The Wells in Cheapside village (now Mikado’s). Teams played as long ago as 1928 under the name
Ascot United but nothing to link them directly to the current club. In 1965, the club had gained permission from the Ascot
Racecourse Trustees to convert the land east of coach park 10 into a football pitch. A wooden clubhouse was built and
this team went on to win many prestigious trophies in the years that followed.
Various youth teams represented Ascot United over the years up to 1988, and 1992 the East Berks 7-a-side Association
was formed by our then Chairman Keith Wicks introducing small-sided junior games and having disbanded in 1980 the
men’s team also reformed. The club continued to grow, entering into partnership with Charters School and being
awarded FA Charter Standard status in 2004. The men’s senior team enjoyed early success through the East Berks
League gaining continued promotions to the Senior division and winning various Cups including the Fielden Charity Cup
in 1996/7. 2001 saw the 1st team join the Reading Senior League and winning the Evening Post Senior Cup at the
Madejski Stadium in 2006. Promotion to the Hellenic League soon followed in 2007, followed by promotion to the
Hellenic Premier Division in 2009. The club today has grown to become one of the largest Community football clubs in
the UK with over 1000 registered players and over 70 teams playing every weekend embracing all ages and abilities
from 5 year olds through to Vets. A new clubhouse opened in September 2010, together with an improved main pitch,
floodlights and a stand.
The club has enjoyed much success at all levels particularly in the Ladies and Girls Section where they are regularly
winners of leagues and county Cups. Our senior Ladies won promotion to the Premier Division of the Southern Region
Women’s’ Football League in 2017-18 and consolidated their position with a mid-table finish in 2018-19. Meanwhile, 2018-
19 was an outstanding one for our junior Boys’ teams who won an array of county cups at various age groups, a feat
we’ve rarely previously achieved.
The past decade has been hugely successful for our first team; our debut in the FA Cup in 2011 attracted 1,149 people to
the Racecourse on a Friday evening where the famous trophy itself was on display and the match was streamed live on
Facebook. Between 2012-13 and 2015-16 we reached the Quarter Final of the FA Vase twice, enjoyed two top-three
finishes in the Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division, and won both the Bluefin Sport Challenge Cup and Perpetua
Press Floodlit Cup. More recently, our players’ development took the spotlight, as a host of Yellamen have enjoyed
success with other local sides and many of our talented development players stepped up into the first team. After
finishing 2017-18 in style, in 2018-19 new manager Jamie Tompkins led his side to the top of the table for long spells,
winning two team-of-the-month awards, and finishing with league cup glory once again by defeating Windsor 3-1.
We were transferred into the Combined Counties League for the 2019-20 season, playing on our new 3G pitch facility,
which transformed the club by facilitating more of our teams’ matches and training at The Racecourse. The stronger
platform facilitated further player development, and Jamie’s young side would lead the table for long periods before
establishing what looked like a title-winning margin at the top shortly before the league was aborted due to
Coronavirus. Retaining much of the same squad for 2020-21, Jamie saw his side in and around the challengers before
another pandemic-curtailed season, although they battled through to the league cup final where they were ultimately
beaten on penalties by Redhill.
As Ascot enjoy a third season in the Combined Counties League, everyone hopes for a safe and consistent campaign,
and if silverware comes with it then that will surely be a bonus in current times!

CLUB HISTORY - SOUTHALL
The Early Days
Southall Football Club was founded in 1871, the first recorded game being a 1-0 defeat against
local neighbours Uxbridge played at Southall Park on October 21st 1871.
The F.A Cup was first entered in the third year of the competition in the 1873-74 season. It was not
a debut to treasure as Southall were drawn away to the mighty Wanderers who had won the
competition in the first two years. The reason is not known but Southall scratched from the
competition. The first victory in the F.A. Cup came the following season when they beat Leyton 5-
0 after a 0-0 draw at Southall Park. The next 20 years were spent playing friendly matches
against teams in London and the Home Counties together with one season in the West London continued on next
League in 1892-1893. The first piece of silverware was won in 1887 when Southall won the West 2 pages
Middlesex Cup overcoming Uxbridge Crescents 1-0 in the final.
Life in the Southern League
Southall were accepted into the Southern League for the 1896-97 season and remained there for nine seasons. The club
achieved little success but at this time competed on equal terms with the likes of Watford, Fulham, Brighton and Thames
Ironworks, now known as West Ham, as well as local rivals Brentford, who they defeated in the West Middlesex Cup Final of
1896.
In 1904 the club turned professional for what transpired to be their final Southern League season (1904-05) and this venture
cost the club dear. Faced with mounting debts Southall withdrew from all competition for the following season. The club was
re-organised on an amateur basis then merged with Southall Athletic and moved into a new ground at Western Road.
The Great Western Suburban League was entered in September 1907 and the Club remained there until the outbreak of the
First World War. During this period the league title was won in the 1912-13 season and both the Middlesex Senior and Charity
Cups were won for the first time. Indeed, Southall became cup specialists during this period including winning all 3 of their
‘local’ Cups, namely the Middlesex Senior, Middlesex Charity & West Middlesex Cups back to back in the 1911 & 1912 seasons.
The Athenian Years and Cup Exploits
Whilst most clubs suspended playing during the Great War Southall continued to play friendly matches, mainly against
services sides and local firms teams. When hostilities ceased the club spent a season in the United Senior League. Southall
were then elected into the Athenian League in September 1919 and the next twenty years was the most successful period in
the history of the Club. The Athenian League championship was won in the 1926-27 season, the Middlesex Senior Cup was
won five times and the Middlesex Charity Cup four times. On a national level Southall reached the final of the Amateur Cup in
the 1924-25 season only to be defeated 2-1 by Clapton in front of 25230 spectators at the ground of Millwall FC. Two seasons
later Southall reached the semi final of the same competition but were beaten in a replay by Leyton. The first round proper of
the F.A. Cup was reached three times with no success.
The 1935-36 season was an extraordinary one in the history of the Club. Progress in cup matches was so extensive that by
the end of February Southall had played 22 consecutive cup-ties. Southall became the first amateur side to battle all the
away from the extra preliminary round of the F.A. Cup and reach the third round proper. It was a superb run that saw them
defeat Division Three South side Swindon Town 3-1 in the first round and then trounce fellow non leaguers Newport (IOW) by
8-0 to earn a third round game against Watford. This time in front of a record home crowd of 19094 Southall were defeated 4-
1. Southall actually won nothing that season and as a result of their cup exploits they played 23 matches in 32 days to
complete the Athenian League commitments including two matches on the same day on two occasions.
It was not until the 1952-53 season that Southall again hit the headlines. The team battled past Saltash, Bishop Auckland,
Wealdstone and Romford to reach the semi final of the Amateur Cup. Here Southall met the renown Universities side
Pegasus. The game took place at Highbury and the game ended in a hard fought 1-1 draw in front of 29982 spectators.
Southall lost the replay 2-1 the following week at Craven Cottage.

CLUB HISTORY - SOUTHALL
A Club in Decline
Southall suffered a major body blow in 1992 when they were forced to vacate their Western Road ground and since
that time Southall FC has ground shared at a multitude of venues, sometimes many miles from the town.
At the end of the 1999-2000 season the Club was relegated to the Combined Counties League and spent five full
seasons in that competition with a fourth placed finish being the highest achieved. Financial problems resulted
eventually in expulsion from that league and a new life began in the Middlesex County Football League for the
season 2006-2007. The first season in that competition the Club finished in a mid-table position in the premier
division but problems off the field resulted in the Club being demoted yet again to Division One (Central & East).
At this time the club was really struggling financially and regular discussions were held as to the merits of keeping
the club going. However, Player Manager Ryan DeCosta was determined that the club should not die and somehow
managed to put a competitive team out with very little in the way of funds available.
New owners appeared on the scene for the 2010-11 season with club now ground sharing at Northolt Rugby Club. For
the 2011-12 season ‘home’ was now Hanwell Town FC and the club was dealt a further major blow with the
unexpected passing of Club Secretary Geoff Harrison, a true club stalwart and without whom the club would surely
have ceased to exist. Despite this setback a 3rd place finish finally meant stepping up to the Spartan South Midland
League Division 1.
Oddly, with the club now effectively a ‘park’ team’ for the first time over 100 years, the next season heralded a return
to Southall as the club rented a pitch at Dormers Wells Leisure Centre from Ealing Council. The Runners Up spot was
achieved, heralding promotion back to the Premier Division and another move, this time to Thames Valley
University’s ground in North Ealing.
A Change of Fortune
Regular managerial changes meant that Southall, while now showing occasional signs of promise,
stuttered somewhat until the appointment of Paul Palmer midway through the 2015-16 season. The following
season saw Southall achieve national recognition for the first time in many a year with a remarkable run to the FA
Vase quarter finals, including being drawn away from home to higher level opponents for 5
consecutive rounds and putting 18 goals past them in the process, before losing out to eventual runners up
Cleethorpes Town.
2017-18 started in typically chaotic fashion with the proposed ground share with Hayes and Yeading
United falling through after the season had actually started! Having been initially helped out by North Greenford
United and Hillingdon Borough, Southall finally landed up at Burnham FC for “home” games. Despite this nomadic
existence the players defied the odds and produced a remarkable season’s football by going unbeaten in the
league until 21st March. Despite the attentions of Baldock Town, Southall finally finished Division1 Champions – the
club’s first Championship since the 1926-27 season! continued...

CLUB HISTORY - SOUTHALL
A Phoenix Rising?
Now promoted back to the Combined Counties Premier Division and hosted by Ashford Town, Southall had further reorganising
to do before the start of the season as Paul Palmer left for North Greenford United, taking a fair chunk of the first team squad
along with him. The club then appointed ex-player and latterly club coach Max Howell as manager, with Warren Goodhind as his
assistant. With such a major upheaval at such a critical time many wondered whether the newly assembled squad would be
competitive at the higher level. All such concerns were soon allayed as Max and Warren proved to be more than up to the task,
achieving a more than creditable 4th place finish with an entertaining brand of attacking football. Southall were again in the
promotion mix for most of the 2019-20 season and were in 5th place with games in hand when the season was abruptly ended
due to the Corona virus outbreak. With a settled management team, things are looking positive heading into the 2020-21 season
and onwards towards to the club’s 150th anniversary in 2021-22. It looks like Southall Football Club may finally be out of the
doldrums and may soon back competing at the higher end of the non-league football pyramid.
