GET CREATIVE THIS FESTIVE
SEASON AND AVOID A FINANCIAL
‘HANGOVER’ IN JANUARY.
This festive season may be less about what you want and more
about what you have to be grateful for. Yet the economic realities
of COVID-19 don’t have to mean cutting out festive spending
altogether. You can get creative about saving money. Here are some
suggestions on how you can create a memorable festive season for
you and your family.
A critical step in the process is to do some basic financial planning
before the festive season to ensure you set aside sufficient funds for
January’s expenses.
1. Be creative with your festive season meals for the family
Remember, the festive season means shops will have festive season
prices, too. But just because something is on special doesn’t mean
you have to buy it! Draw up a list before you go shopping, don’t shop
for food when you’re hungry, and stick to the list in your hand. Also,
make sure no food goes to waste – be creative with leftovers.
2. Don’t break the bank on the perfect gift
Let’s say your aunt enjoyed your mom’s banana bread last year, so
write down the recipe for her on special paper, decorate it and gift it
to her. If you have attractive glass jars, fill them with jam or peaches
and give a family member something home-made as a gift. It’s all
about creativity and thoughtfulness.
3. Entertaining is expensive, so co-host
Entertaining friends and family is an expensive affair. Co-hosting
festive parties, lunches or braais with others might be the way to go.
Organise a bring-and-share at this year’s family gatherings by suggesting
everyone contributes a dish.
4. Reconsider this year’s festive trip with the family
Apart from the imperative to stay safe, a COVID-19 festive season
presents you with an ideal opportunity to make the most of your
area. You really don’t have to spend money to travel in order to have
a good time. Find the nearest park or beach to go and relax. Remember
to comply with the current COVID-19 regulations by practicing
social distancing and wearing a mask when outside near others. Alternatively,
hit a hiking trail in your area – a good way to save money
and work off the festive pudding while you’re at it.
5. Use cash for unavoidable essential items
For those essential items, pack your credit card away. Buy with cash,
and even then only take the cash that’s in your budget with you. In
this way you can avoid the budget hangover in January.
It has been a tough and long year in which many people have suffered
job losses and salary cuts. You deserve to relax and spend time with
your loved ones, but remember that it will only be a good memory if
you go about it in a responsible way. So continue to budget carefully
and count your blessings rather than your gifts.
Capture the essence of
femininity
When we think of the ultimate
perfume, Chanel N°5 comes to mine.
Its floral bouquet is composed around
May Rose and Jasmine notes, and it
encapsulates the essence of femininity.
Even the history of this perfume is
fascinating – in 1921, Gabrielle Chanel
asked Ernest Beaux to create “a woman’s
perfume with a woman’s scent” – rare
and powerful. Gabrielle eventually
chose the fifth sample of the fragrance,
and decided to name it simply N°5.
In 1986, Jacques Polge, the CHANEL
nose since 1978, reinterpreted his
predecessor’s composition to create
a fuller version of N°5 – the eau de
parfum. Get this legendary perfume at
Nishana Wilson
Nishana embodies the maxim that the strongest steel is forged in the hottest fire.
She knew loss early in life when her single mother, who raised her, succumbed
to cancer. “My mother emphasized the importance of education and respecting
others” – values that have since inspired her to excel. “Emulating my big brother’s
example, I’ve always pushed myself to be academically excellent. My results
earned me scholarships and bursary opportunities – from high school until
postgraduate level.”
Nishana’s grandmother is the other strong woman in her life. “She made me into
who I am today. She taught me the power of prayer and persistence even in the
hardest of times. She also taught me to be kind to others and to always be the
bigger person.” Another woman who played a crucial role in Nishana’s life is her
former Science teacher and “self-adopted mother”, Michelle van den Nieuwenhof,
who ignited her passion for Science and teaching. “Michelle’s heart for her
community and how she puts everyone’s needs before her own inspires me to do
the same.”
Her love for Science prompted Nishana to study to earn a BSc in Biochemistry
and Genetics, and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education. She explains, “While
I was tutoring high schoolers during my BSc degree, I realised that I don’t only
enjoy Science, but also interacting with young people. I had to find a way to
intertwine these two passions, and teaching made the most sense. Most kids ‘hate’
Science because they view it as difficult. I really wanted to play a role in changing
this perspective by showing them that it’s actually not that hard.” Today Nishana
teaches Science at Tsosoletso High School. When she speaks about “the kids” she
beams. “Waking up every day knowing there’s at least one youngster whose life
I’m going to touch, through a smile, an encouraging word, a joke, or sometimes
even a little reprimanding keeps the passion for my profession burning.”
Nishana firmly believes that “teaching is a work of the heart. The profession in itself
is a form of community service as you give so much of yourself and your time to
the kids, even outside of the classroom.” Many of her learners come from difficult
backgrounds where poverty is rife.
“Some of these young girls often cannot afford sanitary products and toiletries.
I’m involved in sanitary product drives for our school to ensure that girls do not
miss school because they can’t afford sanitary towels.” Nishana’s grandmother was
the one who taught her, “You can’t receive blessings if your hands are closed”. She
grew up seeing her grandmother feed the poor and elderly in the community of
Brentpark in Kroonstad. “On Christmas Day, she would make chicken curry and
rice for the less fortunate and elderly people who lived in our street. In winter, she
would make them soup on Saturdays. She may not ever have told me that it’s
important to help others, but she has always shown me.”
Apart from Nishana’s firm belief in helping where you are, with what you have, she
is also a natural hair enthusiast. In her disarming way, Nishana declares, “My Afro
belongs on the cover of a magazine, on a runaway, and even in the boardroom”.
For her, “It’s liberating to love yourself exactly as God intended you to be and not
try to fit into someone else’s standards of beauty”. This has also led her to be a
brand ambassador for a local natural hair care brand, Glolooks, as well as Crown
Me Naturally SA, a platform that educates people about natural hair care and
encourages people to accept beauty in all its diverse forms.
And, plans for the future? Her smile broadens, “I hope to be an academic in
the not too distant future… Professor N.C.R. Wilson, heading a STEM Education
Department or doing some
revamping of the South African
curriculum to be more inclusive of
these disciplines”. She says women
are still underrepresented in the
science, technology, engineering and
mathematics disciplines. “I’m currently
pursuing an Honours degree in STEM
Education, with specialisation in
Science Education. Women should
stop limiting themselves and insert
themselves in spaces where they
weren’t allowed before.”
Before she goes, I must ask how she
felt on hearing that she was Get It’s
Cover Search Winner. “I’m honestly a
liker of things, so I’ve always wanted
to be on the cover of a magazine.
The Cover Search was one with a
beautiful twist! It was focused more on
finding a woman who influences her
community positively, rather than just
a pretty face. This was a special cause
and I decided to give it a go.” She adds,
“There are so many women whose
good works go unrecognised, and
although I know that’s not the motive
behind charity work, it‘s necessary
to celebrate the unsung heroes of
our communities”. Nishana admits to
still pinching herself about the win
“considering the calibre of the other
women who were finalists. To say I
felt inspired when I met all the other
finalists would be putting it lightly.”
Five fast facts about Nishana
- Nishana enjoys experimenting
in the kitchen, especially baking.
She is always handing out
food and drinks, and she’s the
chatterbox telling stories and
cracking jokes.
- She loves taking naps… every
chance she gets.
- Nishana suffers from an eye
condition called Keratoconus
(Google it, please), which led to
her having a corneal transplant.
- She’s actually a tomboy – don’t
let the shiny dresses fool you!
- Nishana would like to be
remembered as the girl who
always believed that her dreams
were valid.
Text: MARGARET LINSTRÖM. Photo: PIERCE VAN HEERDEN and babylonstoren
FROM BLOEM TO
BABYLONSTOREN
I grew up in a small town, Viljoenskroon,
in the Free State, then moved to
Bloemfontein and attended Eunice
Girls High School.
After school, I went to Stellenbosch
University to study BSc Viticulture and
Oenology, which roughly translated
means studying wine. I wasn’t sure
what I wanted to study but I knew I
like a challenge. I’m very privileged
that I found something I love and that
I’m stimulated every day with new
knowledge and new tasks to master.
I’ve always known that wine brings
friends and family together with a
good meal and to appreciate the
wonderful memories that it brings. I
only realised while I was studying and
especially when I started harvesting
what it really entails. It’s a combination
of science, being creative, being in
touch with nature, and working with
people.
I consider myself a lucky girl to have
ended up working on one of the
Cape’s most beautiful wine farms,
Babylonstoren.
Despite much being said about women
winemakers working in a man’s world,
South Africa has been very welcoming
to female winemakers. For some, it’s
still surprising that female winemakers
could and are doing the work that only
men used to take an interest in. These
days, female winemakers are setting
the bar high. They’re elevating women
in wine globally.
I don’t necessarily think women make
wine differently, or make different
wine from men. I think it depends more
on the person, the type of wine, and
the winemaker you are. The female
winemakers I have worked with often
focused on detail. This has proven time
and again to make a difference in the
quality of the wine.
I have had the privilege to work with
inspirational winemakers – male and
female. Each and every encounter has
taught me skills and motivated me to
be where I am today.
My winemaking style is based on
keeping it simple, as true to the earth
as possible, and to make the best wine I
can. It takes years and many late nights
to perfect it.
My first harvest in 2018 proved to me
that I really love what I’m doing.
I prefer working with red grapes, but
it’s interesting to experiment with white
varieties.
Harvest time is the most exciting time
of the year at Babylonstoren, and it’s
always a bittersweet moment when the
harvest is over.
The most rewarding thing about my
job is when the wine is even more
fascinating than I expected it to be.
I love travelling so I would love to
travel more and learn a lot more,
and share with others the beauty of
enjoying the simple things in life.
Nelly Poonyane, the owner of De Plante Roses
in Bloemfontein, makes rose farming look
glamorous. Read how this astute businesswoman
is determined to make the city reclaim its title as
The City of Roses…
ell us about De Plante.
We are a family farm situated in Roodewal, which
produces high quality luxury roses. In 2020, we
ventured into growing cut roses commercially. We
also create partnerships and networks everywhere we
operate. These include Welfare Committees on our
farm, and partnerships with local institutions, including
schools, youth groups and local government, to build a
stronger company, community and country.
Will your rose project contribute to tourism in the city?
Yes, more than anything we wish to contribute to the vibrant, dynamic and
energetic character of tourism and help the city to live up to its name as The City
of Roses. But, just having a commercial farm that supplies quality roses to the local
market already adds value to the city.
What planted the seed in your mind to start a rose farm?
In March 2018, I attended a seven-day training course at the SA School of
Weddings in Flower Arranging and Function Deco. On the fourth day, we learnt
about sourcing flowers and we took a trip to flower markets. I remember seeing all
the shops with different kinds of flowers, and the trollies and trollies of flowers, and
thinking I would love to know where all the flowers came from. When I returned
home, I found out that roses are not grown commercially in our city, and most, if
not all our florists, retailers and wholesalers source their roses from Johannesburg
and Cape Town. Then, I started pondering the idea of growing roses. I pitched the
idea to my husband and we saw an opportunity. We researched different ways
of growing roses, taking in consideration our weather, and we came upon the
technology we are using in our greenhouse now.
What makes De Plante Roses unique in Bloemfontein?
We offer a collection of premium Hybrid Tea and Garden Shaped/Classic Roses,
which have been carefully selected from an international rose breeding company
in the Netherlands. We grow our roses using hydroponics and a fully automated
irrigation system to ensure the best quality possible. We also have an automated
climate system, which enables us to create our own climate in the greenhouse so
that we have a consistent supply of roses, even in winter.
How many roses do you cultivate each month?
We stated harvesting our roses in late July this year. On average we cut about
23 000 stems of roses a month. In five years, we hope to have doubled our
production capacity.
What challenges did you face in starting De Plante?
The obvious challenge with every emerging business is capital. We needed capital
of R13 million to start this project. We knocked on many doors, without success.
getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein
A ROSE AMONG
ROSES
But because we were determined,
we managed to get financing, and
put our house up as collateral for the
banks. I’m mentioning this because we
were blessed to have a property that
we could put up as security in order
to get capital. This makes one ask how
many great business ideas of young
people go unrealised because they
can’t raise capital, nor have the assets
to help secure financing.
What did you do before you ventured
into floriculture?
I was in ministry full time – one of
my responsibilities was coordinating
programmes and events for the
ministry, and that’s where my love of
event planning came from.
Who taught you what you needed to
know about producing roses?
Honestly, I’m still learning. I have a
production manager from Kenya with
vast experience in growing roses.
Where are De Plante roses sold?
People can buy roses directly from
our farm. Alternatively, find us
every Saturday at the Boeremark in
Langenhoven Park. We also supply Pick
n Pay in Preller Walk.
Lastly, how has the Bloemfontein
community received your roses?
I’m humbled and overwhelmed by
the support of our local florists, events
industry, and the community. The
appreciation of our roses makes all the
sacrifices and challenges worth it!
Womandla!
The Best of Bloemfontein
Readers’ Choice Awards have always been about
celebrating local businesses in general, but the
last few years the campaign has seen a strong
and forceful emergence from woman-led
businesses in the City of Roses.
Among the cream of this year’s category winners
an impressive amount of businesses have either
been founded or are owned by women! This
speaks volumes about the importance of women
empowerment in a modern South Africa.
In the nine years of the campaign’s existence, winning
an award in the competition has really become the
acknowledgement business people are striving for.
And it has become evident that more and more
female-owned businesses are dominating when it
comes to rendering the kind of service that turns
customers and clients into regulars.
This year awards were once again sponsored by FNB,
and the campaign was one for the books as close
to 30 female-owned businesses were announced
winners across the eight sections of the campaign.
This is in harmony with FNB’s strategy of assisting
women in business as it remain committed to
growing women-owned and -led businesses in
South Africa. Part of this entails entering into strategic
partnerships to help female entrepreneurs from all
backgrounds and cultures to start, run and grow
sustainable businesses.
Stephen Gooch, FNB Free State Regional Head, said
the idea behind the awards is to recognise and
celebrate those local businesses that really embrace
innovation in their business. “Well done on excelling
in your respective fields and industries and being
recognised by your customers as The Best. We applaud
and we celebrate you,” he said.
Not only has FNB’s involvement helped Bloemfontein Courant
celebrate local business in a grand style; it has also assisted
in creating an atmosphere in which the community could be
mobilised behind the campaign and ultimately behind the
deserving winners.
The bank has recently been recognised by the Global
SME Finance Awards 2021 in the Best Bank for Women
Entrepreneurs category with an Honourable Mention for its
Women in Business portfolio. Nicole Sykes, Strategic Projects
Head - Women in Business: National, said the bank is proud of
this recognition.
“It demonstrates that we are committed to doing the right
things in order to help support and grow our female led client
base and we offer them real help and contextual solutions for
their needs.
“We are not just a bank but we are a partner and not only
offer financial support but are purposeful about offering nonfinancial
support. This we do through our tailored programmes,
like the FNB Women in Business Propeller, our Fundaba
learning platform, and also by supporting organisations that
create networks for like-minded women to share their stories
and challenges which in turn inspire other women.
“Furthermore, these initiatives and our Marketplace help to
create new access to markets, which again opens new revenue
streams for female entrepreneurs,” Sykes concluded.
Black. Barista Black. Do you know that, if the Authorised Biography of James Bond is to
be believed, the world’s most celebrated secret agent is 100 years old? So, as it happens,
is the Pinotage cultivar. And grabbing this coincidence with both hands, the team at
Barista conceived a wine and bottling regal enough to match the richness of both the
Pinotage and Bond legacies. This opulent wine demands a well-deserved moment to slow
down, and savour one’s hard-earned successes. With plums, red currants and baking spice
intermingling beautifully on the nose, the wine has a juicy fruit core with velvety tannins
and oak complexity. The finish is long, smooth and pleasantly dry. Just like James!
Perfect to serve this Christmas, or to give as a gift. You’ll find it in fine wine stores for
Reduce sun damage while enjoying the summer vibes
With the weather warming up and the holidays on the way, the thought of relaxing while
soaking up the sun after a year behind closed doors is something many are looking
forward to. “Spending time soaking in the sun is a reward we deserve after what has come
our way, but since we have been indoors a lot more than usual this year, we have to be
wary about getting too much sun exposure too soon. Also, when it comes to the sun and
the damage it can cause our skin, too much unprotected sun exposure should be avoided
daily,” explains Alexa Wilding, Everysun senior brand manager.
Over-exposure to the sun can result in the skin showing symptoms of sun damage, and if
not taken care of immediately can cause lasting effects. It doesn’t matter whether your skin
is dry or oily, or if you have fair or dark skin, sun damage is a concern for everyone, and
can show up in the following ways:
•Dry skin can occur when your skin has been over-exposed to the sun. It can
appear dry, flaky, and slightly more wrinkled than areas without sun damage. Dry
skin can also cause itching.
•When spending too much time in the sun, especially without applying sunscreen
sunburn can occur. Mild sunburn causes pain and redness, while more severe cases
of sunburn can produce painful blisters, and even nausea and dizziness.
•Small bumps that feel like sandpaper or a patch of scaly (peeling) skin with a pink,
yellow or brown tint is known as actinic keratosis can occur due to sun damage.
•Long term changes in the skin’s collagen can also be a symptom of sun damage,
and can result in fine lines, deeper wrinkles, a thickened skin texture and easy
bruising. This happens mostly on the back of the hands and forearms.
“Continuous sun damage over time can cause skin cancer, while everyday exposure
can damage the skin through the lack of sun protection especially when out during the
hottest times of the day,” comments Wilding. “However, it is not all doom and gloom
and a few small changes to way in which we interact with the sun can make a
difference to our skin.”
1.The most important point when it comes to sun protection is to wear a high SPF
sunscreen. Making the application of sunscreen part of your morning routine to your
body and face, while topping up during the day, gives you the protection you need
from the sun and therefore from sun damage. Also be sure to choose a sunscreen
that protects against both UVA and UVB radiation. Everysun’s range of SPF50
sunscreen available in variants for all ages, skin types and activities, is the perfect
companion while enjoying summer. Available in a family size 400ml bottle, there is no
longer any excuses to not protecting your and your family’s skin.
2.Avoid the hottest sun times of the day, from 10am to 3pm. The UV rays that cause
sunburn are strongest during this time. If you do need to be outside wear a high
SPF sunscreen, a hat and find shade.
3.If possible, wear protective clothing. Although wearing long sleeves and long pants
on a hot summer’s day might not be the look you are going for this summer, it can
block out more of the sun.
4.Surfaces such as sand and water can reflect the sun’s rays causing sunburn and
extra precaution should be taken when around these elements.
5.Babies younger than six months old should be kept out of the sun completely and
should be kept in the shade and covered up.
Keeping your skin safe and protected from the sun is simple, and although there
were many doubts during the year, summer is definitely on!

Renal Care and Dialysis Services with a difference
With the growing pandemic of Obesity,
Hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus,
the prevalence of renal disease has also
shown a rapid upward trend.
The latest figures released by the
International Diabetes Federation
(IDF), has revealed that 537 Million
adults around the world are living with
diabetes.
One in ten adults around the world
are currently living with diabetes. The
total number of people with diabetes is
predicted to rise to 643 million by 2030
and 783 million by 2045. 81%of people
living with diabetes, lives in low-and
middle-income countries. An estimated
44.7% of adults living with diabetes
(240 million) are undiagnosed. Diabetes
was responsible for an estimated
USD 966 billion in global health
expenditure in 2021. This represented
a 316% increase over the last 15
years. 6.7 million adults are estimated
to have died due to diabetes or its
complications in 2021 – 1 death every 5
seconds.
Diabetes Mellitus has become the
leading cause of chronic kidney disease
worldwide, as well as the numbers one
underlying disease, resulting in the
initiation of renal replacement therapy.
It can develop in the course of both
Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes; and, as a
consequence of other forms of diabetes
as well.
Renal involvement is usually heralded
by the presence or worsening of
protein excretion, in a patient with
chronic hyperglycemia. As well as the
development of an elevated blood
pressure.
The unit is managed by, Dr Riaan Flooks
(Nephrologist) - Medical Director
and Unit Manager, Ms Cleo Griekwa.
This unit renders renal replacement
therapy to in-hospital patients, in the
form of acute hemodialysis; as well as
to out-patients, in the form of chronic
hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.
The in-hospital dialysis is usually for
patients who had an acute/abrupt
disease process that impaired the
functioning of the kidneys. The outpatient
dialysis centre caters for patients
who are requiring permanent dialysis.
How can we prevent renal disease
from occurring?
• Regular blood pressure checks, and
manage your hypertension, if already
diagnosed
• Diet should be low in cholesterol and
sugar, and high in fiber, whole-grains,
vegetables and fruits
• Regular urine dipstick testing
• Regular blood glucose checks, and
manage your diabetes, if already
diagnosed
• Regular exercise
• Limit salt intake
• Limit pain medication use
• Limit anxiety and stress
• Limit alcohol intake
• Drink enough water
• Don’t smoke, since smoking reduces
blood flow to the kidneys
RESULTS 2021
Celebrating
All records surpassed!
With a little more than 200 000 votes received across the
different sections and categories, the ninth edition of the Best
of Bloemfontein Readers’ Choice Awards surpassed all previous
records!
Bloemfontein Courant readers were encouraged to vote in
numbers, and they came to the party in a big way. The number
of votes received made a huge jump from 130 000 votes in
2020 to just over 200 000 this year!
This once again underpinned the popularity of the Readers’
Choice Awards, as well as the good service rendered by
businesses in the City of Roses to the readers of Bloemfontein
Courant. The campaign was again Bloemfontein Courant’s
single most important contribution to the local economy and
the community as a whole.
By bolstering the local economy and encouraging social
cohesion among the residents of the City of Roses, the Awards
not only encouraged businesses to raise the bar in terms
of service, but also offered the public a platform to reward
businesses by voting for them.
Although pleasantly surprised by the numbers reached this
year, the success of the Best of Bloemfontein Readers’ Choice
Awards was to be expected after nine years of constant
improvement. Like a cat with nine lives, it reinvented itself year
after year to become a force to be reckoned with.
These great results were also testimony to the massive
influence of the hyper-local annual campaign on the market.
Apart from the proven popularity of the Readers’ Choice
Awards, Bloemfontein Courant made some significant
changes to it this year, which definitely contributed to the large
voting numbers.
As of this year, readers did not have to leave their favourite
news website, www.bloemfonteincourant.co.za, to cast their
votes. In the publication’s constant endeavour to make voting
less cumbersome for its readers, the voting platform was
moved from www.bestofbloemfontein.co.za to Bloemfontein
Courant’s own news site, www.bloemfonteincourant.co.za.
As if that was not enough, readers also stood a chance to
win their share of R20 000, by simply voting as many times as
possible!
Another driver of success for the competition was its
partnership with FNB. Being a loyal sponsor of the competition
for the last few years, FNB not only provided financial muscle,
but invested expertise and knowledge to the benefit of
contestants.
