A strategy for success
Professional property marketing on a local,
regional, national and international level.
Fine & Country understands moving home
is one of the most important decisions you
can make; your home is both a financial and
emotional investment.
Fine & Country takes the instruction to sell your home as
a privilege, an honour and as a very serious commitment
to you. Through excellent marketing, we deliver an
efficient sales process and a courteous, careful service.
The more expensive property demands a more extensive
presentation in order to enhance the character of the
property, the location, the area, the facilities and the
lifestyle – for all prospective buyers.
The widespread exposure of your property is crucial. In
today’s market not only is the mobility of buyers greater
than ever, but also the ways in which they may access
information.
Your prospective buyer could come from, quite literally,
anywhere - through local and regional marketing,
through national newspapers and magazines or,
increasingly, internationally using the interactive
technologies such as the internet, touchscreens and
mobile phones.
Instruct Fine & Country and you could benefit from
our knowledge, experience, expertise and contacts and
our well trained, educated and courteous staff. You are
assisted, advised and informed through each stage of the
whole transaction.
“Sophisticated, intelligent and
creative marketing that provides
the type of information buyers
would never normally see – it is a
case of presenting and promoting
your property as if it were our own.”
> First licensee in Thailand
Once again venturing into uncharted territory
for the brand, Fine & Country has signed its
first licence in Thailand. Officially launching
on the 1st of July, Fine & Country Thailand
will be run by Managing Director Sean Barrett,
who confirms Thailand is the second-largest
economy in the Association of Southeast Asian
Nations (ASEAN) and is an upper-middleincome
country with pro-investment policies.
Aside from the beauty of the country and
the selection of stunning properties on offer,
Barrett believes these investment policies will
further encourage buyers to look at Thailand as
an optimal destination for investment.
Barrett says the luxury market in the country is
predominantly driven by overseas investment,
which means there is pent-up demand due
to travel restrictions, which he anticipates will
result in an active market once travel resumes.
In recent news, Phuket is opening to visitors
with no need for quarantine. Initially this only
applies to fully vaccinated travellers but it is a
huge step in the right direction.
According to Barrett, buyers within Thailand’s
premium market are affluent nationals looking
for holiday homes, as well as international
buyers predominantly from Hong Kong,
Scandinavia and the UK. The office will be
focusing on properties that start at £650,000
and go up to £7 million. These are luxury villas
in Phuket and Koh Samui, as well as some
incredible apartments in Bangkok.
Fine & Country Thailand currently has a team
of 14 on the ground and is looking to increase
this over the next 12 months to 30. The office
is in Royal Phuket Marina, with plans to open a
second office in Bangkok within three months.
“Our team is highly skilled in selling prime
and super prime properties to high-net-worth
individuals from across the globe,” Barrett
comments. “We are in the early days and
already the brand has been received amazingly
well in Thailand. We had over 26 listings before
our official opening and aside from clients
loving our approach to marketing, our global
coverage with key locations in Hong Kong,
Germany and, of course, London have been of
huge appeal. This initial success is testament to
the global power of the Fine & Country brand.”
> Cannes Film Festival makes a return
Fine & Country Cannes has reported that the Cannes Film
Festival has returned, attracting an array of celebrities and
international travellers to the region. After a year of absence,
Le Festival du Film and the red carpet made their return to
Cannes for its 74th edition.
Each evening, the rise of the steps was illuminated, thanks
to the parade of stars under the flashes of the photographers
present. Elegant men and women, dressed to the nines,
came to attend the film screenings in the competition for the
Palme d’Or, with a jury of exception chaired by Spike Lee.
This year, an open-air cinema was set up on the public beach next
to the festival palace, screening some of the films for free, like the
new Fast & Furious. During this festival, the critics’ week and the
directors’ fortnight were also present, looking to discover new
talent. These events attract an international clientele.
> Over £60,000 donated in Spring
Grant Programme
In March, The Fine & Country Foundation opened the application
process for the Spring Grant Programme. After having to cancel
the autumn round in 2020 due to the restrictions on fundraising,
the Fine & Country network was more determined than ever to
replenish the pot and make sure a life-changing amount could be
granted this time around.
The Foundation awarded over £60,000 to 26 charities across the
UK and internationally – the most projects it has ever funded in
one grant scheme. This is a small step in helping those who have
been living in poverty and hardship during what was already a
hugely challenging year.
It is only through the members of the Fine & Country network, their
friends and families and the communities they belong to, that the
Foundation was able to support so many worthwhile causes, and
we would like to thank everyone for their support and efforts in
being able to make this possible.
route as of 1st May. The shipping company has invested 90
million euros in this fast ferry with capacity for 1,200 passengers
and 450 cars.
in Dénia
Fine & Country Costa Blanca North is lucky to have its Regional
Office based in Dénia, the midway point between Alicante and
Valencia and the Capital of the Marina Alta. This coastal city is
the closest mainland point in Spain to the Balearic Islands.
The world’s first fast ferry with natural gas engines, the Eleanor
Roosevelt of Baleària, began operating the Dénia-Ibiza-Palma
Technology is a differentiating element of the services of this
green and smart ship, which includes a free platform for digital
entertainment, video surveillance of pets through webcams
or the internet and WhatsApp coverage for text messages
throughout the voyage. The digitisation of the entrances
facilitates the maintenance of safety distances as passengers
receive the boarding pass through WhatsApp.
The name of Baleària’s new ship, the Eleanor Roosevelt, is a
tribute to this writer, gender-equality activist and defender of
the civil rights of African and Asian Americans and Second World
War refugees. Roosevelt stands out for being the first president
of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights and one of
the driving forces behind the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights. This, the shipping company’s sixth vessel, pays tribute
to pioneering women in their respective fields as part of its
commitment to one of the Sustainable Development Goals:
equality and female empowerment.
Urban Golf
Golf fanatics may be focused purely on the course and facilities, but for those who seek
more than a round, what’s on offer? Bronwen Hiller explores golf courses near city sights.
Agolfing holiday is not for everyone. What
happens, though, if a keen golfer wants
to travel with a less-keen companion? A
compromise will be needed… or will it? Combining a
golfing holiday with the excitement a city offers is easy
with European Tour Destinations.
If it is an historical Italian experience you crave, the Marco
Simone Golf and Country Club is situated just half an hour’s
drive from the centre of Rome and close to the hilltop town
of Tivoli. On a clear day, Rome and St. Peter’s Basilica can
be seen from the 17th and 18th tees. The course itself lies
within a beautiful estate, complete with its own 11thcentury
castle. The castle was restored by Laura Biagiotti
Gaulle, one of Italy’s greatest fashion designers.
Tivoli is even closer than Rome, so if the hustle and bustle
of the Eternal City is not to your liking, you can get your
fill of history by visiting its UNESCO World Heritage sites:
Villa Adriana, the estate of Hadrian and the 16th-century
Renaissance retreat, Villa d’Este, or the beautiful waterfall
at Villa Gregoriana park.
Back at the tees, the Marco Simone course is considered
one of the most prestigious golf courses in Italy. It boasts
an 18-hole championship course, a 9-hole resort course
and an impressive clubhouse and practice facilities. Marco
Simone will be hosting the Ryder Cup in 2023.
If your fancy is of a more romantic bent, Le Golf National
could fit the bill. Situated 60 kilometres from Charles
de Gaul airport and 29 kilometres from Orly, it is ideally
placed to enjoy the cultural and gourmet highlights of
Paris. The course is also only 10 minutes from the opulent
Château de Versailles, but the town of Versailles provides
much more to see than this.
➤➤
GOLF
It is bisected by the Avenue de Paris and boasts a range
of markets, museums and gourmet experiences that rival
other French destinations.
With three courses you can also choose your golf
experience at Le Golf National. If you are short of time, the
smaller 7-hole L’Oiselet course offers an excellent training
option to hone your skills. The Aigle, with its undulating
fairways and large greens, gives golfers the feeling of
being on a links course. It’s big brother, the Albatros,
is the centrepiece and recognised as one of the best
championship courses in Europe. Le Golf National hosted
the Ryder Cup in September 2018, so golfers playing on the
Albatros are truly walking in the shoes of great golfers.
Accommodation at the Novotel Saint-Quentin en Yvelines
allows a view of the final four holes of the Albatros course
to make the most of your stay.
In Germany, at Golf Club St Leon-Rot, you can choose
to take on challenging rounds or opt for a relaxing golf
experience. There are two testing championship courses
on offer, supported by a 9-hole executive course, as well
as a children’s course.
Situated 20 kilometres south of Heidelberg in the beautiful
Neckar valley, the club has developed relationships with
nearby hotels, making it easy for guests to make the most
of their stay. Villa Medici is a quiet hotel offering spa
experiences a mere 6 kilometres from the club in a park
setting, while Villa Toskana is 15 kilometres away at the
gates of Heidelberg.
One of Germany’s favourite destinations, the historic
university town of Heidelberg, has survived relatively
unscathed since the 18th century. Nothing is far away in
this compact city, packed with Baroque architecture and
overlooked by the ruins of a Renaissance castle.
Tbilisi Hills Golf Resort is the first 18-hole golf course to
open in Georgia and, remarkably, is now listed in the best
100 courses in Europe. Ideally located only 15 minutes
from the centre of Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, the course
provides spectacular views of the surrounding area.
Tbilisi is known for its distinctive architecture, which
reflects its turbulent history and mixes Medieval,
Neoclassical and Art Nouveau with Stalinist and Modernist
structures. Its location at the intersection of Eastern
Europe and Western Asia reflects its interesting blend of
European and Asian influences, which is celebrated in
culture and food.
Tbilisi Hills has partnered with the Mercure and Marriott
Hotels in the Old Town of Tbilisi to provide a quality
experience for golf and city visits. Both hotels provide
easy access to the major attractions, including the famous
sulphur baths.
Whether you’re a golfer or an explorer or a bit of both,
European Tour Destinations has options there so you can
hit the course one day and bring the history books to life
the next. n
TRAVEL
The Châteaux
of France
There’s no other country that does castles with quite
the same panache as France. Here’s our round-up of the
top five chateaux for your travel list.
TRAVEL
France is home to a plethora of chateaux – so many
that it can be overwhelming determining which of
these beauties to visit. Here are our top picks.
1. Château de Chenonceau
Nestled in the greenery of the Loire Valley, the Château
de Chenonceau epitomises a fairy-tale French castle. The
unusual architecture of the building is a highlight, as it
juts out above the River Cher. The renaissance beauty,
with its turrets, towers and grandiose gardens, is the
second-most visited castle in France after Versailles.
The castle also has a rather titillating history – it was once
home to King Henry II, his wife Catherine de Medici and
mistress Diane de Poitiers, who we imagine made rather
awkward housemates. Over the centuries, the château
has been heavily influenced by its female inhabitants,
who built, embellished, protected, restored and saved it.
For this reason, it is also known as Le Château des Dames
(the castle of ladies).
The château is now home to a magnificent collection of
art, including embroidered 16th-century tapestries and
masterpieces by Rubens and Tintoretto, but the gardens are
also a major draw. There is also a restaurant on the grounds,
the Orangerie Café, built in what was once the stables.
2. Château d’Amboise
The UNESCO World Heritage Royal Château of Amboise,
generally abbreviated to Château d’Amboise, also has a
rich history and can easily be paired with Chenonceau –
although it’s wise not to visit more than one château per
day. The château sits atop a hill, towering over the small
town with which it shares its name.
Château d’Amboise dates back to the 11th century. It
was originally built as a fortress, but the monarchy took
ownership of the property in the mid-15th century and
over the next century and a half, it become a favoured
residence of French royalty. By the 17th century, however,
its fortunes turned and a period of decline began, with the
castle abandoned, used as a prison, and nearly destroyed
during the French Revolution.
Thankfully, it has endured and it is now the most-visited
palace in the Loire Valley. In addition to the château,
there are the beautiful terraced gardens of Amboise and
the Chapel of Saint-Hubert, where Leonardo da Vinci is
entombed. King Francois I invited the ageing da Vinci to
Amboise in early 1516 and he spent the final years of his
life at the nearby Clos Lucé manor house.
A self-guided tour through the château highlights its
collection of Renaissance and Gothic furniture. There
are a number of paintings of French royalty and some
interesting tapestries.
The tour also takes you to the top of the Minimes Tower,
one of two spiral turrets, and the pinnacle of any visit, as
the views from here over the river Loire and the valley are
spectacular.
3. Château de Chambord
Although Château de Chambord is the largest château
in the Loire Valley and sits a mere two hours from Paris,
it was never meant to be a royal palace. It was built as
a hunting lodge by Francis I – the estate is surrounded
by forest and accounts for as much land mass as Paris.
The King built it to provide an opportunity for him to
be closer to his mistress. Ultimately, however, he spent
little time here, as no thought was given to heating the
rooms for longer periods, meaning dreadfully cold winter
temperatures in the 400-odd high-ceilinged rooms.
Francis I commissioned it to look like the skyline of
Constantinople. This explains the façade, which is more
than 128 metres long with 800 sculpted columns and
an elaborately styled roofline. The original design was
created by Italian architect Domenico da Cortona, but
Leonardo da Vinci reputedly also had his hand in it. He
was in the area after all.
When WWII began, the castle was used as something
akin to an art vault, where the national treasures of Paris
and the North of France were stored for safekeeping,
including pieces from the Louvre and other museums.
For years, the Mona Lisa remained here in the cold, until
she was relocated back to the Louvre post-war.
As impressive as the exterior of the Château de Chambord
is, the inside is equally magnificent. One of the highlights
is the three-storey, double-helix staircase in the centre
of the keep.
4. Château de Vaux le Vicomte
As the King’s principal architect, Louis Le Vau had already erected
a number of Parisian mansions when Nicolas Fouquet, the French
finance minister in the early years of the reign of Louis XIV, called
on his services in 1653. Considered the greatest ambassador of
the Italianate style of architecture in France, Le Vau also drew
inspiration from classical antiquity. Working with Andre Le Notre as
landscape designer and Charles Le Brun as painter/decorator, Le Vau
is credited with developing the French Classical style and, in doing
so, establishing the foundations of French architecture for the next
150 years. It all started here, 34 miles southeast of Paris, at Château
de Vaux le Vicomte.
Interestingly, to expand the castle grounds, Fouquet bought and
demolished three neighbouring villages. The villagers - all 18,000
of them - were rumoured to subsequently have been hired as labour
and to maintain the gardens.
The lavishness of the château was ultimately Fouquet’s downfall
– King Louis XIV was led to believe the château was built using
misappropriated public funds. Fouquet was imprisoned for
embezzlement, the château was sold, and Louis XIV sent the design
team to work on Versaille and confiscated all the fine furniture and
art, even digging up the plants in the garden.
monarch’s palace; it was a ‘family home’ for the kings of France,
passed down from generation to generation from the Middle Ages
to the 19th century. Former residents include Louis XVI, Marie
Antoinette and Napoleon I.
Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981, the château has
more than 1,500 rooms, gorgeous artworks and stunning gardens
to explore. It features Renaissance masterpieces commissioned by
Francis I, the lavishly decorated interiors of Marie Antoinette, and
the state apartment of Napoleon I, amongst other notable sights.
Should you tire of opulent rooms, there’s plenty to explore on the
130-hectare estate. The buildings forming the château are spread
over four main courtyards, three gardens and a park and the
succession of architectural styles unfolds throughout the gardens,
with the Diana garden and the English garden designed in the style
of English landscape gardens; the classical Grand Parterre with its 14
hectares of French-style formal gardens and a long park that Henry
IV’s grand canal cuts through for its entire length. n
Château de Vaux le Vicomte opened to the public in 1968. It is the
largest private estate listed as a Historic Monument in France and
the spectacular French Formal Garden makes Vaux-le-Vicomte a
masterpiece not to be missed.
5. Château de Fontainebleau
Around 15 miles from Château de Vaux le Vicomte, Château de
Fontainebleau is one of the largest French royal châteaux and
deserves a place on any itinerary. Fontainebleau is not just a
A Historical Home
There’s a sense of grandeur in this property befitting of its age. Set on the outskirts
of the city of Soest, this is a home with both history and potential.
Michaela Black heads to Germany.
There’s more to Germany than its major
metropolises. Take Soest, located around 50
kilometres east of Dortmund, for example. The
capital of the district bearing the same name is small,
with just under 50,000 residents, but it’s a delightful
spot, surrounded by forests and lakes, ideal for outdoor
pursuits. It is recorded as one of the oldest towns in
the region – it is believed to have been inhabited for
over 4,000 years – and is often considered to be one
of the most beautiful. In fact, the entire district has
much to offer, nestled between the northern Sauerland
hills and the lowlands of the Hellweg, once an
important medieval trade route. This may just be the
perfect spot for those with an interest in architecture,
history and nature.
Once a major trading hub, Soest has maintained
its medieval-to-Renaissance outline, rather than
expanding and modernising. Around two thirds of the
city’s medieval walls still exist, drawing a rough circle
around the city. Both the walls and the churches in
the Old Town are constructed from green sandstone
quarried in the region, giving this part of town a
unique appearance. In addition, there are several
hundred half-timbered houses dating from the 15th
to 19th century, providing a picturesque, old German
townscape that attracted a number of prominent
artists, including Wilhelm Morgner, Eberhard Viegener
and Arnold Topp. Bruno Paul – a pioneer of modern
architecture from the early 1900s – created three city
villas there between 1928 and 1931. Medieval churches,
Renaissance paintings and several high-quality
museums are therefore prominent among the historic
and cultural offerings of Soest.
with beautifully landscaped gardens leading to the
entrance of the main house. The rear garden includes a
large garden pond with an adjoining pavilion, painting
a rather bucolic scene.
The interior is no less commanding. The home spans
three floors and includes features that are bound to
delight. A wine bar in the expanded vaulted cellar
provides the ideal space for entertaining; there is a
well-proportioned fitness room with a sauna; a library
and office spaces. Many of the rooms feature parquetry
or wood flooring, the fresh white walls ensuring the
rooms are light and airy. There’s much to explore
throughout this commanding property.
The main home, however, is also not alone. It stands
with a friend – an adjoining building – with enough
space to accommodate staff or guests. There is
potential here, simply waiting for a new owner to
bring the vision to life.
The scenic location ensures a secluded retreat as
you relax in your wellness oasis. On the other hand,
the urban life of the Ruhr area is easily accessible.
A quick connection to the international airports is
also guaranteed by the A 44 motorway and a mere
two kilometres southeast of Bad Sassendorf there is
a small airfield with a grass runway, accessible for
private planes. The nearest major airport is Dortmund
Airport, less than an hour’s drive away. Fly, drive or
simply stay home and soak up the serenity in this
dream home that is so full of possibilities.n
Beyond Soest, the nearby spa town of Bad Sassendorf,
also with medieval roots, can be reached in a mere
five minutes by car. In the charming old town with
its historic houses and winding streets, there is a
lively centre for trade, services, culture and leisure.
A beautiful, well-kept spa park and numerous cafés
and restaurants offer a multitude of options for
pleasant pastimes.
The extensive range of leisure activities in the area
leaves nothing to be desired. Be it golf, tennis, horse
riding and hunting, sailing and fishing or music and
culture – the offer is broad. Within a radius of 20
kilometres there are ten golf clubs and various riding
stables just for a start. What more could a resident
need? Perhaps a well-located historical manor?
Look no further. This manor on the outskirts of Soest
dates from the end of the 19th century, yet it has been
extensively renovated and completely refurbished
according to the latest standards. The approach to this
six-bedroom, four-bathroom property sets the scene,
the iconic lighthouse. Why cherished? Well, The Oyster
Box has been providing guests with special memories for
almost 70 years. She’s an icon and she’s far from stale – this
beauty still shines.
Set just 15 minutes’ drive from King Shaka International
decorated rooms and suites, an award-winning spa set
amid tropical gardens, and an extensive selection of
restaurants, along with several bars.
On the dining front, for ocean views, it has to be a bistro
meal at the Ocean Terrace; then there’s a High Tea at
the Palm Court, inspired by the hotel’s original colonial
architecture, with chandeliers from the Savoy Hotel in
London; a signature dish in the Grill Room; or for a more
intimate dining experience, the magnificent Chef’s Table in
the sunken wine cellar. If none of that takes your fancy,
there’s the Oyster, Salmon & Sushi Bar, featuring freshly
harvested oysters from the hotel’s own oyster beds. It
doesn’t get any fresher than that.
Should you dip into the spa offering, you’ll find six modern
treatment rooms, a hydrotherapy bath, grooming lounge,
plunge pool, state-of-the-art private fitness centre, infinity
pool with garden views and a post-treatment tranquillity
lounge. In addition, the Spa houses an authentic Turkish
hammam, an experience as special as it is healing.
The Oyster Box is part of the award-winning Red Carnation
Hotels collection, comprising 20 five- and four-star,
family-run, boutique hotels in London, Dorset, Guernsey,
Ireland, Scotland, Geneva, Florida, Botswana and South
unique location that reflects the local environment, culture
and cuisine. And each hotel enchants as surely as The
Oyster Box endures. n
Bringing the
Outside In
As the warmer weather approaches, we’re looking at home updates to make the
most of the summer season. Fine & Country Property Staging reveals their
top tips for indoor-outdoor rooms.
Your sunflowers are growing tall, your lavender
is scenting the garden and summer barbecues
are on the cards. This season, it is all about
streamlining your space, bringing the outside in, and
vice versa.
Bifold Doors
Bifold doors have become a must-have in properties
of all shapes and sizes, from cottages to luxury
homes. They are a fantastic way to let natural light
flood in and give the illusion of additional space.
Whether they are in your living room, dining room or
open-plan kitchen, these gateways to sunlight are a
statement piece, but they also transform a room and
add personality.
Think about extending the flooring outside in the same
materials that you have inside to create a continuation
when the bifold doors are open. This way it will feel
like a natural extension to the house. Pairing an
outdoor rug – an item that has seen an increase in
popularity this season – with Scandinavian furniture
will incorporate this space into your home as if it were
another reception room.
Instagram is inundated with people moving their
indoor furniture outdoors, replicating their cosy
living room aesthetic outside in the sunshine, while
expanding their living space. After all, when the sun is
shining, your garden or terrace is more inviting than
being inside.
Keeping Warm
When it starts to get chilly, consider using outdoor
floor lamps. They now come in stylish options with
heaters and even speakers, all in one. As well as a
selection of chunky blankets and throws to keep
you and your guests warm, external fireplaces, more
commonly known as firepits, are a focal point when
embracing the inside-out styling trend. That will keep
you cosy on chillier evenings.
Choosing Furniture
Really consider your furniture. Many brands are
now creating pieces that work equally well inside
or out. Dark tones of green are a popular choice this
year, which complement a lot of furniture styles and
embrace the natural tones of your garden. If you don’t
have the budget for a brand-new suite, accessorise
with throws, cushions and accessories to add pops of
colour and achieve a chic aesthetic.
Rarity for homestead lovers with a charming
event location.
business. Behind a large courtyard gate hides a classic
Rheinhessen farmstead that will enchant you with its
unique flair. This property comprises a main house,
360m 2 on three floors, an adjacent building, as well as
bright rooms. Wooden floorboards, historic tiled floors,
a large fireplace in the living room as well as another
one in the attic flat create an expressive ambience.
The separate flat enchants with its ceiling beams as
well as the exposed quarry stone walls and offers you a
good condition in Rheinhessen. It is currently used as a
ceremony room for weddings.
wellness oasis with a large swimming pond or make your
long-cherished wish of horse farming come true.
Estonian Golf and Country
Club – The Captain’s Tower
Estonian Golf and Country Club is a unique living space with
a range of properties available for sale ranging from plots to
fully furnished golf villas. The properties are all constructed
to a very high quality with emissions reduced by using
energy-efficient materials and innovative space heating and
cooling technologies – these systems are installed to address
energy conservation.
The real estate is located within golf villages around
the golf course, each village having a different architect,
e.g. the Helme Village has houses designed to resemble a
Captain’s Tower.
The Captain’s Tower is a house from where you have
complete visibility of everything that is going on around you
with views to the sea as well as to the golf course. Here, you
are the true master – the two golf courses that separate your
house from the sea are so close you feel as if they are part of
your garden and as a golf club member, you can play both
courses for as long and as often as you like.
