SOLVING
FOREWORD
TAFE DESIGN ALUMNI 2018
TO
FROM
SUBJECT
Hard Drive
Andrew Reid
Thank you
Hey Hard Drive, I know we’ve had a bit of
a rocky relationship (I will never forget you
letting me down at that critical time in final
year, nor myself for not backing you up) but
it feels like we’ve been on a real odyssey
together, and I just wanted to say thanks.
As you are aware, I spent YEARS working
so f’ing hard on design (after design, after
design, after design...) for my lecturers, for
the assessments, for internships, for AWARD
school - spending *hours* trawling the
internet, books, magazines and EVERYTHING
ELSE seeking inspiration and ideas to come
up with *N*E*W* concepts. Do you know how
hard that is in today’s world? When there is
an absolute deluge of great work out there
already? Trying to be original and to stand
out? Sheeeesh. I gave it my all, and I gave my
all to you until I forgot to. Thank you for being
there and holding that space for me.
When I lived through the tides of imposter
syndrome during TAFE (and beyond) swinging
like a pendulum from, ‘I can do this!’ to, ‘What
the hell am I doing?’, you were there. As you
know, you have mainly been party to those,
‘What the hell...’ days – and as always, with
hindsight, I know I could have done more to
help you to help me. But we battled through.
I realise that sometimes I was very hard
on myself, which might have made me say
cruel things to you, hard drive. I’m sorry. But
know it’s only because you were my closest
compadre during those tricky times. I am
working hard on being kinder to myself, and
giving myself a break – but, thanks for taking
the brunt of my emotions anyway. It really
meant a lot.

I’m afraid I can’t do that!
It’s strange to think how far we’ve come. Both
strange and exciting! We partnered up a bit
later than most human-hard drive duos (can you
believe I worked ten years as a diesel mechanic?
Ha!) and yes, now you live in a drawer (sorry but
I just couldn’t rely on you after that time you
skipped out on me) but you’re still so important
to me. You hold memories – even though I can’t
access them – I know they are there, and I just
can’t let you go.
Thinking back on the events of our journey,
it makes me realise how some happenings which
feel SO HUGE at the time, are not. They’re just
twists, bumps and turns in the crazy path of life,
and those challenges contribute to our creativity
and resilience. I sometimes wonder if you were
trying to teach me a lesson at the time? Hard to
see when you’re in the thick of it I guess. Having
swapped lecturers for creative directors, and
assignments for briefs - I take those lessons from
our past with me. I look back on our time with
such gratitude. Together we learnt so much and
laid such solid foundations for the career that I’m
forging now. I owe so much to your support.
PACKAGING, ALCOHOLIC, SWELL SEASON
Foregone conclusion?
I’m currently writing a foreword for the 2021
graduates at NM TAFE. Seeing the hard work
these creatives have put into their portfolios
and projects reminded me of our time together.
What they’ve managed to achieve over the last
couple of years is truly incredible.
As I’ve looked through this catalogue one
thing is clear: The future of design and creative
problem solving is in safe hands, plus it looks
like they’ve all backed up their work regularly.
I now live with multiple hard-drives and a backup-the-back-up
routine that is second to none.
And for that – I am forever grateful.
Thanks again for being there.
Your friend, Andrew

VOYAGE,
FULL OF
EVENTS
BOARDERLINE // NOVEMBER 2020
Coordinating the creative and organisational efforts of over forty
graphic design students to throw an art sale is tricky at the best of
times. But add a global pandemic to the mix, now that made things
interesting. Our first fundraiser as a group, Boarderline proved to be
hugely challenging, but even more rewarding. It forced us to step
outside our comfort zone, roll up our sleeves and work together
as a team. We cooperated as a cohort to produce and sell custom
skate decks, stickers, LP covers and more - earning a tidy sum for
our Advanced Diploma graduation exhibition.
GREAT FINDS // AUGUST 2021
After the success we enjoyed with the Boarderline art sale, we were
eager to outdo ourselves with another fundraiser. This time around,
the stakes were higher; we were raising funds for our final graduate
show and it had to be BIG. Fortunately, we had the skills needed
for the job as third-year Advanced Diploma students. Posters were
printed, invites were sent, and our excitement grew as we designed
unique, premium and eclectic artwork - Great Finds. A spectacular
turnout and plenty of sales made for an unforgettable evening,
allowing us to take our graduate show to the next level.
BRIGHT PRESS // AUGUST 2021
In August, the Graphic Design Department had the pleasure of
hosting Bright Press owner and old-school print expert Ann Ong
as our artist in residence. Her fascinating and beautifully crafted
poster series exhibition Common Phrases That Originated From
Printing, was more than enough to inspire our creativity and
spark an interest in the art of letterpress. So, we took a road
trip to Whiteman Park, home of Bright Press - Ann’s unique
and independent letterpress printing workshop. It was a truly
amazing experience to see vintage printing presses in operation
and to learn typesetting from a pro.
AGDA PORTFOLIO REVIEW // SEPTEMBER 2021
Once again AGDA graciously hosted this year's portfolio review
which was attended by several keen Advanced Diploma students.
It was an excellent opportunity to receive expert advice on our
design work from industry professionals belonging to Perth's
most renowned studios. It was really great to be able to connect
with professionals and get face - to-face feedback! The advice
we received and the connections we made will be an invaluable
asset as we continue our journey in graphic design.

Assessment scheme
The ISTD student assessment scheme,
started in 1975, is cited as a model of
academic thoroughness and professionalism.
Unlike many others, the scheme is
not a competition as it considers the holistic
achievement – not just the final outcome.
The overall design process of research,
reflection, strategy, design development,
technical and production specification is
assessed by teams of practicing designers
and educators. We demand this rigorous
approach to ensure standards are met and
that the award maintains its significance.
Students who are successful in the scheme
are offered membership of the Society.
Without doubt all students who undertake
and submit work for our assessments
learn an enormous amount. All students who
submit receive a personal report and even
those who are not successful often tell us
how much they feel they have benefited from
doing the project.
We review our methods and standards
annually. Incorporating reflection from
members, assessors, tutors and students
from around the world ensures best practice
is maintained and that each successful
student’s award reflects a considerable and
pertinent achievement.
The briefs
Our practice is based upon the printed word
but now embraces the gamut of media and
technologies that we use to communicate.
Accordingly, we have progressively written
our student project briefs for interpretation
through a range of media. How and where
we use the written word has brought new
challenges and more importantly new
opportunities.
By not defining specific media and
outcomes for our projects, we offer holistic
communication challenges – deliberately
breaking the perceived tradition of the typo/
graphic designer just providing essentially
visual skills. First and foremost we are
communicators using design skills to inform,
persuade and delight. This makes each
project a more demanding but stimulating
challenge that we can individually resolve.
With that in mind we point out what
should seem obvious – that ISTD is a society
addressing the typographic aspects of
graphic design. We mention this because
each year we receive submissions from
students who show well-developed general
graphic design skills, but have missed the
point that we are assessing each student’s
particular typographic skills. That is not to
suggest that typography is a discrete area
– but is fundamental in addressing visual
communication through the word. Put
bluntly, it is graphic design but it needs to
use typography as the essential vehicle
to communicate.
Assessment process
Assessments are held annually, and parity is
maintained across all areas through central
supervision and moderation, with the process
following the same procedure as that for the
main assessment. The number of assessors
involved in each area scheme is determined
by the number of projects submitted.
The main assessment requires around
forty members and tutors who spend two
intense days assessing several hundred
project submissions. Teams of two take on
average about half an hour on each project
including writing the personal report. These
teams are moderated by experienced
assessors who ensure parity of marking and
continuity of the levels of award. This latter
point is critical as our standards for award of
Pass, Merit or Commendation are not equivalent
to any national or institutional standards,
but are maintained through continuity within
the Society and its ongoing professional and
educational activities.
Our commitment to education through the
Assessment is further expressed by providing
opportunities for a number of tutors to be
mentored as assessors each year. A valuable
experience of the content and standards
required, that is often reflected in the quality
of the projects subsequently submitted by
their students. This is one of the several
benefits of Institutional Membership.

Silence is Golden
Within my publication project, I wanted to capture
the beauty of the silent film, allowing the reader to
experience the multiple influential regions of the
silent film world: Japan, Germany & Russia. Each zine
details one highlight film, one highlight director and
what made that region unique to the silent film world.
I have attempted to create three distinct typographical
publications that generate interest and excitement
surrounding the topic. In turn, celebrating one of the

Invisible Cities
Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino is a novel comprised of
fifty-five tales told by the Explorer Marco Polo to the
emperor Kublai Khan. Each tale explores a different
fantastical city that is self-contained and devoid of plot
or character development. Instead, the tales describe
the cities through the lens of different themes, thus
commenting on the human experience and psyche.

Perception Creation
The world around you is rich with information.
As we navigate through what we call ‘reality’,
our brain’s perpetual task is the challenge of
putting all this information in order. To select
from, organise, interpret and act based on an
endless stream of sensory signals: the sights,
sounds, smells, tastes and physical sensations
of whichever environment we occupy at any
given time. Perception Creation is an immersive
and interactive print publication that explores the
human brain’s remarkable ability to make sense
of the physical world through perception. The
book comprises two parts, The Sensory World

fascinating account of current knowledge in the
field, alongside original illustrations and thoughtprovoking

The Voices of Silence
This project is a tribute to those who shaped the
Silent Film Era, and consequently, the growth of
the film industry as a whole. I decided to focus
on the three most influential names that shaped
silent cinema in three different aspects: the
invention of film, the actors and their characters,
and filmmakers. I chose these three aspects as
they are all intertwined with each other, which
helps create a harmonious story of development.
This publication is organised into three sections.
The sections are ordered in a way that captures
the evolution of cinema and silent film, starting
with the Lumière Brothers and the invention of
the cinématographe, followed by Charlie Chaplin
and his impact on and off the screen, and then
concluding with Thomas Ince, who is considered
the father of filmmaking.
