In the past, Carlson has also been<br />
a member of the volunteer committee<br />
that organizes the walk. “There<br />
are smiles there and happiness, but<br />
there are tears, too, because we’ve<br />
all lost and been through Alzheimer’s<br />
with someone.”<br />
For Carlson’s family, that someone<br />
was her mother, Margaret<br />
Dolan, who had Alzheimer’s for<br />
eight years before she died in May<br />
year that her family participated in<br />
the walk.<br />
Margaret and Edward had been<br />
children. All but one still reside in<br />
Greene County. Each year, the surviving<br />
children, grandchildren and<br />
great-grandchildren get together as<br />
a team to walk and raise money for<br />
Alzheimer’s research, support and<br />
programming.<br />

The Dreamcatchers is one of the<br />
walk’s top fundraising teams. In its<br />

raised $6,600.<br />
“I wish we did not have to fundraise,”<br />
Carlson said, voicing the<br />
sentiment that a cure for Alzheimer’s<br />
already existed. “What I do<br />
enjoy is seeing the support we get<br />
from our other family members, our<br />
community and our co-workers.”<br />
During the walk, participants<br />
carry orange, blue, yellow, or purple<br />

The Dolan family had a particularly<br />
poignant experience at a walk<br />
a few years ago when Carlson’s father<br />
was present. During opening<br />
ceremonies, her great-niece represented<br />
the recently added white<br />
person to be cured of Alzheimer’s.<br />
“My dad was still alive to see<br />
this,” Carlson remembered.<br />
Two years ago, at the previous<br />
in-person walk, the youngest of her<br />
parents’ 24 grandchildren repre-<br />

is the world’s largest event to raise<br />
awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s<br />

Family Planning, a division<br />
of Greene County Health, received<br />
notice their competitive<br />
grant application to provide<br />
reproductive health services in<br />
Greene County was selected.<br />
This grant provides funding<br />
to provide needed reproductive<br />
and other health services to<br />
Greene County. This $228,770<br />
grant was awarded by the state<br />
Department of Health for the<br />
This funding is an increase<br />
of $64,892 from the previous<br />
competitive family planning<br />
grants awarded.<br />
In <strong>2021</strong> so far, the clinic has<br />
seen 842 clients for 1,801 visits.<br />
The clinic offers low-cost access<br />
to same-day contraception,<br />
pregnancy testing and pre-conception<br />
counseling, testing for<br />
sexually transmitted infections<br />
ing for breast, cervical and other<br />
cancers.<br />
Additional services include<br />
treatment for opioid-use disorder<br />
and harm reduction services<br />
including Narcan and fentanyl<br />
test strips, and counseling by a<br />
licensed medical social worker<br />

community college on healthy<br />
reproductive decisions and staying<br />
