TODAY
celebrating 15 years
OF SERVING DURHAM STUDENTS
It is hard to believe that 15 years have passed since the ribbon
was cut on the newly founded Emily Krzyzewski Center and we
welcomed the first 38 students to the Pioneer Scholars program.
In the years since, our programming has expanded to serve
nearly 2,000 students annually. While the pandemic has continued
to present a range of challenges, our commitment to providing
impactful educational opportunities to young people has held strong
throughout.
This milestone year was one in which we revisited several key
components of the Center’s work. Most notably, we updated our
organizational mission and formalized our organizational values.
Since they are such an important reflection of the Center’s core
commitments, you’ll see that information within this report and also
on the recently overhauled emilyk.org. Updating our website was
another important step forward this year; it now features a refreshed
look, expanded information about our work, and Spanish-language
web pages.
If you’ve driven by the Center over the last year, you likely saw the
biggest change unfolding in real time. This fall, we were thrilled to
open a 7,500 square foot building expansion that almost doubles
the Center’s instructional space. Generous supporters like you
contributed almost $19 million during our multi-year Game Changer
Campaign that concluded in December 2020. With a larger and
updated facility, further enhanced programs, and new commitments
to our long-term sustainability, we are committed to doing our most
important work now and in the years ahead.
It has been an honor to partner with and serve Durham students since
2006. Thank you, truly, for being part of the Emily K Center family.
Sincerely,
MIKE KRZYZEWSKI

OUR MISSION
Quality educational experiences are essential to preparing
students for the future, yet systemic barriers create
pronounced disparities in educational opportunities and
outcomes. The Emily Krzyzewski Center, a nonprofit
organization in Durham, North Carolina, implements four
distinct programs designed to build on the academic, career,
and leadership potential of students who are traditionally
underrepresented in higher education. Collectively, our
programs serve students from elementary school through
college and equip them with the skills necessary to
successfully complete higher education, connect to
promising careers, and become agents of change within
their communities. We amplify our efforts through
partnerships with our local school district,
community-based organizations, and universities.
OUR VALUES
The Emily Krzyzewski Center is committed to:
equity
Creating equitable access
to educational and economic
resources requires that we
challenge deeply entrenched
systems that have
disproportionately impeded the
success of students of color and
others who face pronounced
barriers to higher education.
Achieving equity requires
courage.
education and
opportunity
When provided access to the
education, tools, support, and
resources necessary, everyone
can define and achieve the
success they envision and
create positive change.
Opportunity opens doors.
family and
community
partnership
We honor the significance of
diversity, family, and community,
and recognize the importance
of authentic inclusion,
collaboration, and partnership
to reaching shared goals.
Your voice matters.
teamwork
By leveraging the unique
strengths of each member of
our community, we affirm the
importance of teamwork and
collectively achieve more.
We are stronger together.
