Words by VERONICA WONG DIFFA
“You’re gonna turn your head around when I walk in the room”, Steff
laughs as she talks to Voir about her fierce, confident, and playful
fashion sense. “I don’t like to look like everybody else in the room. I like
to stand out” - and with an exceptional reputation like hers, there’s no
denying it.
Stefflon Don, one of the UK’s top leading female rap artists and singers
of our time, is the emblem of an empowering woman, conquering the
creative industry one hit single and #steffgasm-ic outfit at a time. Best
known to write and rap her own music, having recently released ‘Dip’
with Ms Banks, and playing with remixes of her current favourite songs
like her fire adaptation of Rema’s ‘Soundgasm’, Steff takes a moment
from her busy (but clearly a vibe) studio session to tell us about her
journey into the industry and, how her music icons turned into hit
record features.
Seamlessly crossing music genres from Rap, Grime and Dancehall to
R&B, there is always one culture that heavily influences Steff ’s music -
“I grew up in a Jamaican household, so there’s a lot of Jamaican artists
that I grew up listening to”, Steff recalls as she lists her favourite artists
that inspired her from a young age. “Sean Paul, Beenie Man, Sanchez,
Buju Banton, Lady Saw – definitely early on, all the Jamaican acts
inspired me.” And with a huge music-loving family, particularly Steff ’s
mother, music was always playing in the house – “I was like a child
glued to the TV watching music videos, and my mum loved music too,
so there was always something good on like, Destiny’s Child, Missy
Elliott and Lil’ Kim – I love Lil’ Kim so much.”

64
“Oh my Gosh! [laughs] It’s so crazy… who’s been my favourite?”
Steff pauses to think hard about this, after all, she’s had so many killer
hits with big-name artists in the game like, Mariah Carey, Ne-Yo and
French Montana. “I think the one that makes me feel like ‘Wow, I used
to listen to you when I was a kid and I can’t believe I’m here working
with you’, was definitely Sean Paul… and even Buju Banton. Definitely
those two for me. Because growing up as a kid you just don’t think,
‘Oh, one day I’ll do a song with Sean Paul’ [laughs]. You just don’t really
say that! You can’t forget Lil’ Kim. She flew into my headline show and
performed. It was amazing! Listening to those people as kids and
being on a record with them is kind of surreal. Like I always knew I
would make it, but you never think that at [a young] age.”
It’s hard to imagine Steff as anything other than confident, fierce,
and affirmative but to our surprise, this wasn’t always the case -
“When I was younger, I was actually really shy, especially in music.
And I realised I was only shy because I was aware I wasn’t that good.
[laughs] That’s all it was. So, when I became good, I became less shy.”
Steff explains it was all a learning curve, that working hard on her
dreams and being proud of her accomplishments made her the
confident and courageous woman she is today. “When I was happy
with my own work and my own vocal ability, my own raps and rhymes,
that’s when the shyness disappeared. Cause I knew [then, that] I’m
good and I’m sick. So I grew this kind of attitude where you take it, or
you leave it [laughs].” Now, with sold-out concerts and tours, she can
firmly say she never gets nervous before a show.

Fearlessly showing the world that you can do whatever you put your
mind to, Steff created her own self-mantra;
You Are What You Do In The Morning.
“If you get up and the first thing you do is check your calendar, you read a
book to calm your [mindset] or, the first thing you do is get up, eat healthy
and go gym, that just tells who you are for the rest of the day. If you ain’t
doing that, then you’re not serious about whatever you’re doing. That’s
just how I feel.”
It’s all about setting yourself up for success in all aspects of your life and,
it undoubtedly works. Steff recounts the time she developed most in her
career – “[I developed most] when I was doing a few remixes, like the
Lock Arff Remix with Smoke Boys. When I done that, I was like ‘This is
exactly what I wanna sound like. This is exactly who I am.’ So when I wrote
those bars, shot that video, and put it out, I didn’t care if I had 5 views…
I didn’t even look at views. To me anything was a win as long as people
saw me… however many that was. I’m just happy that whoever’s seeing
me could say I’m hard. That’s it. That’s all I wanted.”
With an increased saturation of social platforms and millions of eyes set
on you, it’s difficult not to get overwhelmed by the so-called importance
of stats and engagement of your craft. But to Steff, numbers don’t come
close to the appreciation of your work. It’s all about trusting your creative
process and believing in yourself no matter how social media defines
you. “I feel like with me, I choose to focus on myself, I choose to focus on
what I got going on [around me]. To me, numbers and stuff were never
a big thing. Only now [am I] becoming more aware of it. [Social media]
is like, ‘These are the numbers, these are the numbers!’ But when I was
coming up, it wasn’t about numbers.

It was about making good music and everyone saying ‘You know what,
all their heart is in this, and their craft is amazing. That’s why I want to
work with them’. It’s becoming less about that which is sad.”
Although stats aren’t everything, Steff admits that when ‘Hurtin’ Me’
peaked UK’s number 7… “even though I felt like it should have gone
number 1, but I was up against a lot of even bigger people that week”
Steff laughs… she should have stopped to appreciate it a little longer – “I
thought… I should have enjoyed that time more because I didn’t realise
it was a big thing.”
Steff’s incredible engagement from her roaring fans and supportive
family and friends proves there’s nowhere else she’d rather be, than
making beats in her studio and creating chart hitting singles – “Most of
the time I get inspired by songs I’ve heard and I’ll start writing in my notes
and then voice record the melodies. Sometimes I even play a beat, hop
on the mic, and start freestyling stuff. That’s how I made Hurtin’ Me and
16 Shots… I didn’t write a lot down, I kinda just got on the mic and just
vibed.”
With her head in the beats and her body in the booth, when does Steff
ever get time to rest? She pauses to think just as long… “When am I ever
not working? And what would I possibly wanna do with my time when
I’m not working [laughs].” But the truth is, a well-earned break (with a
small dab of worker’s guilt), is spent with her family, especially her son,
where she always takes time to help with his homework no matter
what. Otherwise, Steff catches up with her friends who understand the
challenging nature of the tough creative industry! As much as herself,
Steff will always make an effort to celebrate and congratulate her fellow
female artists as, “Women empowering women should be natural. We
are the nurturers, we are providers, without women there is nothing
[laughs]. And that’s the truth!” That’s female empowerment at its best.
79
WE ARE THE

THERE IS NOTHING

THE TRUTH!

An INTERVIEW with DR. ELISABETH
SHEFF: ‘Monogamy Until Tequila’ and Other
Ideas of Polyamory.
Relationship Expert, DR. ELISABETH SHEFF
Answers your Questions On Polyamory, Partners,
And Relationship Priorities
Polyamory - what does it mean and who is it for? Nonmonogamous
relationships have become the new thing, but
there is more to learn about these relationship types than what
we see on social media. Most recently, Will Smith and Jada
Pinkett Smith revealed their non-monogamous marriage
during an episode of ‘Red Table Talk’ sparking the internet’s
opinions on the couple’s lifestyle choices. Voir sat down with
expert Dr. Elisabeth Sheff, known as Dr. Eli, to learn all about
polyamory, how to open a relationship, and most importantly,
setting boundaries and communicating consent.
Words by CAITLIN SAHIN
MEET DR. ELI,
with a Ph.D. in sociology and a background studying polyamorous
families with children since 1996, she offers an informative, nonjudgmental
perspective on non-monogamous relationships. Firstly,
what really is polyamory? Dr. Eli, defines it as “a form of consensual
non-monogamy, with emphasis on emotional intimacy and sometimes
sexual intimacy, occurring among groups of more than two people.” A
polyamorous relationship may sound similar to an open relationship but
these labels depend on how the individuals involved choose to define
themselves: “open relationships resemble an umbrella category whereas
polyamory is a more specific relationship. In an open relationship, there
is no assumption that you have to be honest with your partners as it is
undefined. In polyamory, everyone impacted by the relationship is fully
aware as honesty and communication are prioritized.”
The thought of a polyamorous relationship can sound appealing for
many, as Dr. Eli explains it allows a partner “to get their needs met by
more people. They no longer have to rely on one person to fulfill sexual,
emotional, social and even, intellectual needs.” No longer focusing solely
on one single person can raise questions of commitment, which Dr. Eli
emphasizes is different for specific relationships: “Some people will
have a primary commitment to one person, whereas others are equally
committed to all their partners and enjoy the freedom and fluidity of
these secondary, rather than primary relations.”
A polyamorous relationship may seem like a balancing act, so we asked
Dr. Eli, how can everyone remain happy and satisfied in a
88
“
“
OTHERS FEEL LIKE THEY ARE
FINALLY TAKING THEIR
FIRST FULL BREATH
OF AIR...
”
97
,
98
She explains this dramatically differs for each relationship, “some
people may be miserable and it simply is not for them, whereas others
feel like they are finally taking their first full breath of air; most often it’s
a middle-ground. The beginning of the relationship can be particularly
difficult as at that point you are working out where everyone fits but
once everyone is comfortable, it can be an incredibly smooth and
fulfilling journey.”
Dr. Eli’s work specializes in research of polyamorous families with
children, she explained the practicalities of that relationship dynamic
further: “Most people don’t live with all of their partners, it’s hard to find
housing, even for big monogamous families where everyone has their
own space! The vast majority of children find polyamorous families to
be really supportive, learning life skills like good communication and
emotional resilience. It’s an environment in which adults will apologize
for their actions when they’re wrong and maintain honesty with the
children, this open communication trickles into parenting from
polyamory.” And whilst the children may be surrounded by multiple
adults in their life, “the majority of children only view two biological
parents, the other partners are seen as aunties/uncles, they play a
supportive and fun role rather than a disciplinary role.”
Dr. Eli puts this down to the increase of internet communications
changing everything, including the inclusivity of other sex and gender
minorities.
Image: @CowPetter
91
“
BABYBOOMERS CREATED
THE BOXES, BUT GEN-Z
BABYBOOMERS CREATED
THE BOXES, BUT GEN-Z
DOESN’T DON’T NEED
THOSE BOXES
”
“Non-conformists could find other people much more easily through
the internet, and among Gen-Z, polyamory fits right in with their larger
generation of fluidity. Babyboomers created the boxes, but Gen-Z
don’t need those boxes.”
Dr. Eli shared her wisdom on relationships in general, advising single
women to “be picky and choosey”. She reasons that “you don’t have
to put up with a form of relationship that doesn’t fit you.” Another must
for any successful relationship is prioritizing consent - “For a truly
consensual relationship, things have to be negotiable, re-negotiating
later is not going back on your word, consent is ongoing and you can
revisit it at any point in a relationship.”
Now that we know what polyamory is,
how can we find out if it is right for us?
Dr. Eli advises experimentation, her close friend has firmly asserted
herself as “heterosexual until tequila” and is perfectly happy with
experimenting in specific circumstances! Often, polyamory or
monogamy can be hardwired for individuals. Dr. Eli has even found
in her studies that when polyamorists reflect on their childhood they
notice they never had a singular best friend, but rather specific friends
for different aspects of their life. Furthermore, if you are already in
a relationship and are considering polyamory with your partner, it’s
important to first be able to “authentically say you will allow your
partner to be with other people and that you can handle the feelings
which come with that - if you don’t believe you can do that, then
don’t attempt it.” It can be a challenging relationship that requires
communication, negotiation, and self-awareness. The bonding
project test online, partly created by Dr. Eli, is a good option to see if
polyamory is for you.
93
102
You can take the short test to judge what your preferred relationship
style is - if you and your partner are curious, the bonding project is a
good opportunity to compare results and see what relationship styles
you are most compatible in. When opening the relationship with your
partner, Dr. Eli prioritizes talking about boundaries first, “consider what
happens if one person is attracted to someone and the other person
is not. Some couples sabotage themselves by making assumptions
that they will only date people together.”
She also explains that there is a divide between wanting sexual variety
and polyamory and it’s important to understand what you and your
partner are seeking in opening the relationship. If you’re currently
single and looking to experiment, dating apps can be a good option
for finding fellow polyamorists.
Whilst polyamory may not be for everyone, there is no harm in learning
about different relationship types and questioning our own identities
without judgment. Our main takeaways from speaking to Dr. Eli are
consent, communication, and honesty - whether or not you are a
strict monogamous, a ‘monogamous until tequila’, or a hardwired
polyamorist, these three areas can be applied to any relationship for
SUCCESS.
