“Central builds the

kingdom by equipping

disciples* through

engaging ministry.

(*spiritually, physically,

emotionally, culturally,

socially, and financially)”

Just imagine, Central Baptist Church has experienced 175 years of God’s grace, His mercy and

favor.

We, the Co-Leaders of this monumental Church Anniversary event, were honored to support

an amazing Team of Co-Leads who planned and executed projects that were blessings to

Central disciples and the community. On behalf of the entire Team, we would like to extend

our sincerest gratitude to our Pastor, Reverend Anthony L. Riley, for selecting us for this

esteemed responsibility.

Our spirit-filled 175th Church Anniversary worship service was celebrated on March 21,

2021. During this worship celebration, disciples with 50, 60, 70 years of service and more were

honored by being featured in a dynamic video produced by the Honorees Recognition Team.

Each Honoree was also presented a beautiful award highlighting their tremendous service

achievement. Proclamations from many of the City of St. Louis Officials were also presented to

Pastor Anthony Riley during this worship celebration.

The Random Acts of Kindness Team spearheaded a church-wide community service project to

which all the Ministries of the church donated toiletries and household products for two senior

facilities – the Heritage House Senior Living Program and the Circle of Care St. Louis Saving

Our Seniors Program. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the Central Ministries that

made this project a huge success.

We are pleased to join the Ad Booklet Team in presenting this extraordinary Commemorative

Ad Booklet. Join us in turning page after page on a colorful journey that will lift your spirits

and recall some precious memories that might bring a tear to your eyes. The Video History

Team created an amazing new video spotlighting key, memorable moments in the history of

Central Baptist Church. Be sure to look for your picture in the new Church Directory which

will document all of the current disciples of Central at this unprecedented time in our history.

The sanctuary historical display presentation brings to the forefront proud historical moments

in the life of our church. This year-long celebration will culminate next Spring with a fabulous

Gala celebration. Don’t miss it!

The Lord has brought Central Baptist Church “to” our 175th Church Anniversary Celebration

during this world-wide COVID-19 pandemic and He will usher us “through” it. We speak for

this entire 175th Church Anniversary Planning Team when we say that this has been our great

honor and privilege to serve God and Central Baptist Church as a member of this Team. It is

our prayer that our efforts have brought joy to everyone who shares in this great 175th year of

celebration.

God has granted me the awesome privilege of

celebrating my second anniversary as Senior

Pastor of the Central Baptist Church during her

175th Anniversary year. It is, indeed, my great

honor to stand on the shoulders of the long

line of Pastors who were progressive, visionary,

and transformative. Former Pastors of Central

have left a legacy which is still benefitting the

community today, such as being instrumental in

the organization of the Pine Street YMCA, the

Phyllis Wheatley YWCA, Vashon and Sumner

High Schools. Reverend Ronald B. Packnett

developed the Crisis Intervention Ministry (now

affectionately called the Community Meal) to

assist the homeless with food, clothing, and

spiritual guidance.

Some disciples at Central have left an indelible mark in the community,

including Harriet Robinson Scott, wife of Dred Scott, who as slaves, sued for

their freedom before several courts until their case reached the United States

Supreme Court in Washington D. C., ultimately contributing to the Civil War

and the end of slavery in America. Disciple Dr. Julia Davis made St. Louis

history as the first living person to have a St. Louis Public Library named in her

honor. We have a distinguished cloud of witnesses that God has used to God’s

glory.

Our focus continues to be education, outreach, and social justice. Our goal

is to meet the community where they are and fulfill their needs. The global

pandemic has changed our reality in many ways thereby causing us to move

out of our comfort zone into unchartered territory. However, Central is

resilient and her resolve steadfast, to live out our mission:

“Making Disciples…Transforming Lives”.

Dear Central Baptist Church,

It is with pleasure that I write this letter to Central Baptist Church celebrating 175

years of service and ministry to the St. Louis metropolitan community. Central

Baptist has a rich history - as the second-oldest church in St. Louis - and is a historic

landmark and treasure to our city.

Founded in 1846, Central Baptist Church is a physical reminder of God’s grace and

faithfulness. Central has stood the test of time, always able to adapt to meet the

needs of the community. In 2014, the church created COUER (Community

Organization to Engage, Uplift and Restore) a non-profit committed to serving our

community via clothing drives, food distribution and free tax assistance. Personally,

I’ve had the privilege of worshipping with the Central Baptist family several times and

each time I leave with my spirit full of God’s word and my heart full of love for the

congregation.

A church is as good as it’s people, and Central Baptist leads the way in loving and

serving God’s children. Thank you for your contribution in making St. Louis a better

home for us all. Congratulations on 175 years and may God continue to bless the

Central Baptist congregation.

Church History

I. IN THE BEGINNING: THE EARLY

YEARS OF CENTRAL BAPTIST CHURCH

During the late 1820’s, the First African Baptist Church

(now First Baptist at 3100 Bell Avenue) was organized

under the leadership of the Reverend John B. Meachum.

Approximately two decades later, in response to people

moving west, a group from Reverend Meachum’s

congregation requested letters and permission to start

their own church. Permission was granted. On March

22, 1846, an assembly of 23 Christian individuals

separated from the First Baptist Church of St. Louis,

MO during the pastorate of Reverend Meachum.

The breakaway group, consisting of slaves and free

individuals, initially met for prayer in various homes.

With 23 charter members, regular worship began on March 22, 1846, under the leadership of Reverend Richard

Sneethen (E.J. Gordon, 2020, personal communication). With the blessings of the First Baptist Church, the

Second African Baptist Church was officially organized on March 22, 1846.

Reverend Sneethen was the pastor of Second African Baptist Church for one

year (1846-1847). The Second African Baptist Church held services in Liberty

Hall, which was attached to the Liberty Engine Hall on the corner of Third and

Cherry Streets (Franklin Avenue). Baptismal services were held at Chouteau’s

Pond on Eighth and Clark Avenues. Reverend Sneethen was called to a pastorate

in Louisville, KY in 1846.

CENTRAL BAPTIST CHURCH

INTRODUCTION

The love and grace of God is so powerful. God has demonstrated God’s love and grace in establishing and

sustaining the ministry of Central Baptist Church for 175 years. Established during the days of slavery, Central

is the second oldest Black church in St. Louis. Central’s Pastoral leadership has been progressive, visionary,

and transformative. Her discipleship has been Christ-centered and purpose-driven. Following the command

of Christ and under the leadership of God’s visionary undershepherds, Central’s pedigree has been, is, and

continues to be salt and light

to influence and impact

the St. Louis metropolitan

area. Central’s strength

is in her community- the

laity, leaders, and

pastors shared and spread

God’s Word with a

spiritual focus and through

progressive ministry.

Many current disciples are

the third and fourth

generation of descendants

of past congregants.

Since inception, Central has

engaged in activities of

significance with a focus

on education, outreach,

and social justice. Central’s

legacy has built strength

for the future and the future

continues to be very

promising.

Reverend John R. Anderson was then elected as pastor and his tenure spanned

sixteen years (1847-1863). Reverend Anderson was a conductor on the

underground railroad. Under Reverend Anderson’s pastorate and leadership,

Second African Baptist Church moved to its second place of worship. In 1851,

the 300 member congregation marched from Liberty Hall to its newly

erected and first official house of worship at 8th and Green (now Lucas Ave.)

Streets (E.J. Gordon, 2020, personal communication). The Second African

Baptist Church then became the 8th Street Baptist church.

During that time, Harriet Robinson Scott, the wife of Dred Scott, was among

the members of 8th Street. She was a slave who tried for more than a decade

to gain her freedom through the court system and in the spring of 1846, she

took legal action to claim her freedom. In April of the same year, Harriet and

Dred Scott each filed separate petitions in the St. Louis Circuit Court to gain

their freedom. Unable to read or write, it is believed that Harriet relied on

advice from Reverend John R. Anderson, the pastor of the Second African

Baptist Church she attended in St. Louis. Harriet Scott and her husband,

Dred, sued for their freedom before several courts in Missouri. Eventually,

their case reached the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. and is one of

the most important cases ever tried in the United States. Scott’s decision to

file a suit for freedom and to stay with it until its final conclusion were acts of

high courage and determination and are intertwined in the DNA of Central

Baptist Church.

The Scotts’ case eventually contributed to civil war

and the end of slavery in America. These traits

would give strength to the long and difficult struggle

for civil rights that Harriet Scott’s descendants and

future generations of Central disciples would endure

for the next hundred years.

In 1863, following the death of Reverend Anderson,

Reverend Jesse F. Boulden was called to the

pulpit of 8th Street. During his two years as pastor

(1863-1865), Boulden made significant strides. He

organized the ministerial, educational, training, and

administration faculties both locally and statewide.

He also planted churches and schools for Black

people in the Mississippi Valley (E.J. Gordon, 2020,

personal communication). Several ministers were

ordained during Reverend Boulden’s pastorate

including Reverend Simon P. Anderson, who would

later become the pastor of the 8th Street Baptist

Church. During Reverend Boulden’s pastorate, the

expansion focus began to reach out to establish

Christian relationships with other local and state

congregations with common interest.

Reverend William H. White was known as “the

father of ministers.” He served as the fourth pastoral

shepard. During his three year tenure (1865-1868),

Reverend White continued to move 8th Street

forward. He taught newly emancipated blacks how

to read and write in the basement of 8th Street

Baptist Church. As an eminent theologian and

scholar, Reverend White played a key role in the

formation of Western College (E.J. Gordon, 2020,

personal communication). He also established

an institute for young ministers at Olivet Baptist

Church in Chicago, IL and many other expansion

endeavors. Brother W.P. Brooks, an original 23

member expansionist, was ordained under Reverend

White and founded many churches in Missouri and

surrounding areas.

Reverend Simon P. Anderson, the son of Reverend

John R. Anderson, was 8th Street’s pastor from 1868-

1880. Reverend Anderson organized the Samaritan

Relief Society, which provided assistance to the sick,

poor, and elderly in the congregation. He was also a

major spokesperson in the fight for adequate schools

and teachers for Black children (E.J. Gordon, 2020,

personal communication).

The pastorate of Reverend Sampson P. Lewis, (1880-

1884), was considered to be one of “quiet preaching

and teaching.” It was during his four years that the

Ladies’ Missionary Circle was established at the 8th

Street Baptist Church.

From 1885-1889, Reverend Simon P. Anderson

returned to 8th Street for a second tenure. A new

house of worship was established as well as a new

name. The new house, named Central Baptist

Church, was located at 23rd Avenue and Morgan

Street (Delmar). By this time, Central was the

largest Black Baptist church in the City of St. Louis.

The new building was dedicated in April 1885. In

1886, Mrs. Francis E. Willard , leader of the Women’s

Christian Temperance Union Movement (WCTU)-

one of the largest and most influential women’s

groups of the 19th century-held her first meeting in

Central Baptist Church.

Reverend John L. Cohron was the eighth pastor

(1889-1902). He was instrumental in organizing

the Baptist Young People’s Union, the Young

Men’s Praying Band, the Young People’s Literary

Society, the Pine Street YMCA, and the Phyllis

Wheatley YWCA. Reverend Cohron’s wife, Sara

Newton Cohron led a group of women who raised

community concern for the welfare of neglected and

orphaned children. Mrs. Cohron took in the first

orphan girl and gathered women from the WCTU

and nearby AME churches to do something for the

orphans. Originally the St. Louis Colored Orphans’

home, the orphanage was renamed Annie Malone’s

Children Home in 1946.

II. 20th Century Central

Central was under the leadership of Reverend

George E. Stevens for 34 years (1903-1937).

Systematic organizational measures were

implemented. Reverend Stevens had a gift for

administration. He helped to introduce a budgeting

process, envelopes for tithes and offering, and

a group system for

congregational care.

Reverend Stevens also

used his gift in the

community. He was

instrumental in organizing

Vashon and Sumner

High Schools for people

of color. Pastor Stevens

also helped elect Central

member Walthall Moore,

Sr. as the first African

-American Missouri State

Representative.

16 17

Central’s congregation had grown significantly

under Reverend Stevens. Many families from the

neighborhood became members of the congregation

and had at least three generations who were active

members of Central. On July 2, 1913, members

marched from 23rd and Morgan to the new site at

the corner of Washington and Ewing (T.E. Huntley).

Reverend Clarence M. Long served as Central’s

pastor from 1937 to 1941. He was the first African-

American to graduate from Upsala College, a private

school in New Jersey and was valedictorian of his

class. During his tenure, the church’s debt was

significantly reduced and the music department was

expanded. The Gospel Chorus and the Youth Choir

diversified the gifts within the music ministry.

Reverend Dr. Thomas E. Huntley was elected pastor

in 1942. He served Central for 39 years (1942-1981).

He has been described as loving, gentle, personable

and reserved by those who knew him personally.

Central’s congregation continued to exponentially

grow as the church was the center of her community

(S. Ginger, personal communication). In 1946,

Dr. Huntley adopted a three-point program to

simultaneously grow Central and curtail juvenile

delinquency in St. Louis. From this program, the

Church on Wheels ministry was born. This ministry

made its inaugural visit to the Veteran’s Hospital

on March 14, 1948. Reverend Clydrow Durbney,

the Director of Evangelism, drove the church bus

for the Church on Wheels ministry and visited

the Pruitt-Igoe and Carr Square Village Housing

Projects as well as the neighborhoods surrounding

Central to minister to children frequently. Reverend

Fairest Price and Deacon Alexander Keller also

worked in the Church on

Wheels ministry. This

ministry led many children

to Christ. The Deaconess

ministry was very active

and influential during this

time. Deaconesses Keller,

Fortson, Price, Slaughter,

Whitney, Johnson, and

Scott served utilizing their

gifts of help and presence.

The Deacon ministry was

also influential and cared

for the congregation. Deacons Walker, Jordan, Pitts,

Claiborne, Miller, and Dunn served as trustees,

Sunday school teachers, youth workers, usher

ministry, and sang in the choir. Reverend Huntley

set the pace for ministry in St. Louis when he hired

well-trained congregants as full time employees

of Central Baptist. Dr. William Claiborne was the

Christian education administrator. Deacon Major

Price and his family’s construction business helped

to build the educational building. Upon his death,

Deacon Price bequeathed a portion of his estate to

purchase and install the electronic sign that now sits

in front of the church. These congregants used their

professional credentials in service to God.

Dr. Elizabeth Maddox Huntley was influential in

the music ministry of Central Baptist Church. The

wife of Pastor Huntley composed classical music,

taught singing, and played harmonica and piano.

Mrs. Huntley passed on her love of music to the

next generation. She organized the Trebelettes

(Children’s Choir) and was a mentor to many of

Central’s musicians including Marjorie Price Patton

and Deaconess Earnestine Jones Gordon.

The music ministry expanded tremendously

during Dr. Huntley’s pastoral tenure. Traditionally,

hymns and anthems were sung by the Chancellor

choir. However, the Gospel Chorus, directed

by Mrs. Crump was organized. Professor J. Roy

Terry, a classical organist, served as a former Music

Director (M. Patton, personal communication).

Mrs. Mildred Bailey, also a classical organist,

directed the Chancellor’s choir and taught at Turner

Middle School (C. Price, personal communication).

People would visit Central just to hear the choir (E.

Gordon, personal communication).

During the late 1950’s and 1960’s, America wrestled

with racial and economic injustice. As such, Central

was home to many Black business owners. Dr. A.

C. Phillips was president of the New Age Federal

Savings and Loan . Established in 1916, New Age

Federal Savings & Loan remained the only blackowned

financial institution in St. Louis into the

1960s. Deacon Eugene Slaughter and family owned

a cleaners, Trustee Ellis Outlaw was an attorney,

Leslie Bond and James Whittico were medical

doctors with their own practice, and Deacon Paul

Miller had the only black owned beauty supply in

the 1950’s.

Central Baptist Church hosted Reverend Dr.

Martin Luther King, Jr. as he began his ascent as a

monumental figure for the civil rights movement.

Many local and national churches did not support

Dr. King during this time (C. Price, personal

communication). Between 1954 and 1964, King

visited St. Louis as many as nine times. Drs.

Huntley and King, both Morehouse alumni, crossed

paths as Dr. Huntley had lived and pastored a

church in Montgomery and King Sr. & Dr. Huntley

were classmates at Morehouse College. On April 10,

1957 after Dr. King preached at Central, he spoke

at the Kiel Auditorium (currently the Enterprise

Center) as part of the Freedom Rally to raise funds

for the Montgomery Improvement Association

(MIA). The Treblettes-- Central’s Children’s Choir--

accompanied Dr. King and sang at the event. MIA

was instrumental in guiding the Montgomery bus

boycott. The following morning, King had breakfast

with a group of Black leaders at the home of Dr.

Huntley.

Central was home to many disciples who made

history in St. Louis during Reverend Huntley’s

tenure. Deacon Eugene Slaughter won two gold

medals for swimming in the Senior Olympics.

James “Cool Papa” Bell moved to St. Louis and

played baseball in the National Negro League. Bell

was an excellent pitcher, hitter, and remained a

center fielder for the rest of his baseball career. The

street in St. Louis where he lived is less than a mile

north of Central Baptist and was renamed James

“Cool Papa” Bell Avenue. Memorialized in the

St. Louis Walk of Fame in 1991, a statue of James

“Cool Papa” Bell stands outside of Busch Stadium.

Dr. Julia Davis made St. Louis history as the first

living person to have had a St. Louis Public Library

(SLPL) location named in her honor. Dr. Davis was

a prominent educator and researcher of African-

American history. Dr. Davis taught 48 years, lived

to 102 years old, and dedicated her life to teaching

and awareness of African-American cultural

contributions. Upon her retirement from teaching,

Dr. Davis donated the equivalent of roughly $15,000

today to the SLPL in order to fund the Julia Davis

Collection on African American History and

Culture. In 1973, SLPL celebrated her contributions

by naming a library after her. The library was rebuilt

and opened in February of 1993 on Natural Bridge

at Newstead. Dr. Julia Davis was an ordinary

woman who did extraordinary things—and in doing

so became an amazing example of a life well lived.

(Katie Moon, Administrative Assistant for Exhibits

and Research).

In 1971, Central Baptist Church’s edifice was gutted

by an electrical fire on March 6. For disciples,

watching the building burn and seeing the charred

remains was devastating and crushed their spirit.

Dr. Huntley, despite his failing health and thoughts

of retirement, took on the challenge of rebuilding

the church. His goal was to rebuild and ensure upon

completion, there was no mortgage to pay. Trustees

Phillips, Jones, Bell, and Outlaw contributed greatly

to this endeavor. Member William E. Lee served as

lead architect. On December 21, 1975, the members

of Central Baptist marched into their new debt-free

edifice. The building and location tell the story of

Central’s determination and resilience. Eight years

later, Dr. Huntley passed away. Reverend Clydrow

Durbney was elected as Central’s 11th pastor in 1984

and he served for one year.

18 19

In October 1984, Central called the Reverend

Ronald B. Packnett to be its 12th pastoral shepherd.

His pastorate continued for the next 11 years (1985-

1996). Pastor Packnett engaged in social justice

in the community. He developed and initiated the

Crisis Intervention Ministry to assist the homeless

and the working poor with food, clothing, and

spiritual guidance; the Thanksgiving Give-Away

is an extension of the Crisis Intervention ministry.

Youth development and outreach programs also

flourished. To enrich the lives of Central’s youth,

several trips were organized. Places visited included

the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis,

TN; the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. Center

in Atlanta, GA; and the United States Capitol in

Washington, D.C. Central also hosted Jawanza

Kunjufu, prolific author of African American Books,

for its 149th Youth Day celebration. The music

ministry continued to diversify and expand. The

Inspirational, Combined, Young Adult, Youth,

and Childrens’ choirs were either birthed or

grew. Choral repertoire still included hymns and

anthems but now included gospel hymns and

contemporary gospel songs. Reverend Packnett

died in December of 1996. Central Baptist

Church did not have a pastor for nearly three

years. Reverend Ralph Jackson served as the

interim pastor during that time.

III. Central Strong: The New Millennium

In 1999, a call was extended to Reverend Dr.

Robert C. Scott to become the pastor of Central

Baptist Church. Dr. Scott, along with church

staff and key Officers of the Church, developed

the vision, mission statement and motto of the

church. The logo for Central’s pin was designed

by Ms. Elaine Young. Dr. Scott emphasised

discipleship and challenged the congregation to

refer to themselves as disciples of Jesus Christ.

He developed and implemented a Christian

Education Orientation (CEO), a six-week class

to help new disciples understand what it means

to be a follower of Jesus at Central. In 2004, Central

expanded her campus by purchasing the warehouse

at 2800 Washington.

Dr. Scott was a progressive

egalitarian in ministry and

church leadership. He licensed

and ordained the first woman

to pulpit ministry in Central’s

history, Reverend Dr. Alice

C. Price. Since then, several

women have been licensed to

preach the gospel and ordained

for ministry. He ordained the

first woman in Central’s history

to the Deacon ministry, Cora

Mae Hicks; several women

have been ordained to serve in

the diaconate since that appointment. Annette Slack

was the first Chairwoman of the Trustee ministry.

In 2007, Central Baptist Church’s sanctuary and

education buildings were severely damaged by a

storm. With the leadership of Dr. Scott, the Deacon

and Trustee ministries rallied the congregation

to engage in a $2.5 million renovation of both

buildings. Jesse Selvey, serving as Church

Treasurer, was the “de facto’’ project manager of

the renovations. Central held two worship services

in the gym at full capacity

until the renovations were

completed. The following

year, Central returned to the

newly renovated sanctuary

with greater seating capacity,

upgraded media and sound

technology, and a new hope

of divine possibility for the

future. The music ministry of

Central continued to grow and

take shape. Women of Psalm,

Psalms of Victory, Voices of

Central, Harvest, and the

Praise Team were added to the

ministry. The Creative Arts Ministry was established

and includes the drama, mime, and liturgical dance

ministries. After 17 years as Senior Pastor, Dr. Scott

was called to North Carolina to pastor.

Reverend Dr. Alice C.

Price was elected by

the congregation as the

Interim Pastor in 2017.

A faithful member of

Central for over 30

years, she has served as a

part-time employee, full

time Executive Minister,

and Executive Pastor.

She was instrumental

in developing and

implementing the Central Baptist Church – St. Louis

Community Organization to Engage, Uplift and

Restore (COEUR) Foundation (501C3). The mission

of the COEUR Foundation is to enhance and expand

opportunities for healthy living, social awareness,

urban economic community development, and

educational achievement, including, but not

limited to Science, Technology, Engineering and

Mathematics (STEM). Developed in 2014, the

foundation uses a holistic approach to provide

needed services to youth, families, and individuals

residing near the Church and in the greater St. Louis

area. The COEUR Foundation aims to improve

the lives of youth, creating strong families, and

providing opportunities for individuals and families

to give back to their communities. Dr. Price served

as Interim Pastor until March of 2019 and retired

from the Executive Pastor position in November of

2020.

20 21

Reverend Anthony L. Riley was installed as the

14th Pastor of Central Baptist Church in 2019. His

dynamic and bold vision is to lead Central into the

future that builds upon the legacy of the vibrant and

stable ministry she always has been. Education,

outreach and social justice are hallmarks of the

strategic and development plan currently underway

to serve the needs of the community for the next

175 years and beyond. Necessary shifts towards

virtual ministry and digital discipleship during

the COVID-19 pandemic are being implemented

and improved. As Pastor Riley continues to lead

in unknown territory and navigates through the

often-changing challenges facing church ministry,

he emphasizes the importance of getting and staying

centered at Central to her disciples.

In 2021, the St. Louis Board of Aldermen voted

unanimously to declare Central Baptist Church a

City of St. Louis Landmark. “This designation will

give honor and recognition, recognizing the efforts

and sacrifice of all those before us who have made

such a significant impact on the life of our church

and to the region. We believe that the wellness

of our history will serve to inspire generations to

come” (G. Brown, Trustee).

So many people have contributed to the historical

narrative of Central Baptist Church. Through 175

years, Central’s intricate impact in her community

and the lives of the laity and leadership has

left an indelible legacy of making disciples and

transforming lives.

Over 175 years of ministry excellence

and faithful service!
