Tree hut project
soaring along
MINI APPRENTICE: Aria on the saw helping out with the tree huts in the Avon Ōtākaro River Corridor.
• By Emily Moorhouse
FOR THE last three years,
Banks Avenue School pupils
have been learning, building
and developing a lot of patience
as they work on their tree hut
project.
Now, the end is in sight. The
first platform was put up in the
tree with the others to follow
early next year.
The pupils designed and built
the tree huts to be put up in
Woodchester Ave at the corner
of Medway St and River Rd as
a way to feel connected with
nature and the community.
Child facilitation team
member Emma Woods
from Woodland Escape, a
playground design company,
has been working alongside
the children and said they
have grown more confident in
sharing their ideas.
“They’ve been really patient,”
Woods said. “I believe the
children feel like it’s theirs and
they can see all their ideas
in it.”
The goal was to have all
the huts up in the tree by the
end of the year, but funding
didn’t cover the costs and the
Givealittle page set up didn’t
receive as many donations as
the group had hoped for.
They have raised $255 so far,
towards a goal of $5500.
Christmas
comes early
for bike
fix-up group
• By Emily Moorhouse
A GROUP that repairs and
restores bikes for the community
has received a “pretty nice
Christmas present”.
The Aranui Bike Fixup project
will receive $10,000 of funding
from the city council for taking
community action to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions and live
more sustainably.
The project’s founder Steven
Muir said they had six bikes
stolen last month from one of
their bike library trailers, so the
funding will help to buy parts
for bikes that got donated as
replacements.
The group also has a youth
worker lined up, and Muir said
having funding in place will help.
“A lot of the kids don’t have
much to do, so getting them out
in the weekends and getting them
active is good for their health,” he
said. “We really want to expand
in that area and get kids out
using bikes so that will be a big
part of where the funding will go
towards.”
Muir said being able to keep doing
the workshops every Thursday
and fixing up the hundreds of bikes
they work on every year was great.
He said they are lacking in volunteers
to help fix the bikes and
mentor the kids, so that was an
area they hoped to expand.
The money will come from the
sustainability fund, set up by the
council to encourage community,
school, social enterprise or
business projects that help meet
the city’s climate change goals.
Survey to determine
cockle health in estuary
COMMUNITY volunteers have
rallied to survey the abundance
and size of shellfish in the
estuary.
Groups of volunteers
surveyed 30 sites on the
mudflats along with a boat
survey of eight sites in the
estuary channels.
The Estuary Trust,
together with mana
whenua, Environment
Canterbury, city council,
Canterbury University,
and the Ministry for Primary
Industries are conducting an
extensive scientific survey and
evaluation of tuaki/cockles across
the whole estuary.
“We need to ensure that the
numbers of tuaki/cockles remain
stable (or improve) to restore
cultural values and ensure our
birds have ample food to eat,”
Estuary Trust chairman, Kit
Doudney said.
The estuary has in the past held
high cultural values for mana
whenua.
These qualities were lost during
an extended period of ecological
decline since the establishment
of the city in the 1850s and
confiscation of a Māori reserve
Kit
Doudney
for the oxidation ponds in the
1950s.
The Estuary Trust and its
partners believe that
the community is now
ready to work towards
managing some of these
habitats sustainably,
including the shellfish
beds, so that cultural
values are re-established
and enjoyed by future
generations.
The project is led by
Trust Board members Islay
Marsden, Emeritus Professor in
Marine Biology at Canterbury
University, and ecologist Ann
Kennedy, in support of mana
whenua.
The scientific analysis and
reporting will be carried out by
EOS Ecology.
The results will inform a
future management plan for the
cockles in the estuary and will be
published on the Estuary Trust
website.
EVALUATION: Estuary
Trust members and local
residents assisting in the
survey.
In Brief
MOBILITY PARKS
The Coastal-Burwood Community
Board has approved plans to install
two new mobility parking spaces
at the North Beach Surf Club. The
idea was put forward by the North
Beach Residents’ Association. The
club has accessibility mats for those
in wheelchairs but the existing
mobility parks are 90m away from
these, making it difficult for users to
get from their cars to the mats. The
two mobility parking spaces will
replace three regular parking spaces
located outside the toilet block near
the entrance to the club.
BMX CLUB RAISES FUNDS
The North Avon BMX Club raised
their goal of $30,000 for a new
asphalt pump track to be installed
at Bexley Reserve. The club hit their
crowdfunding target a few days
before deadline so a stretch goal of
$40,000 was implemented. The club
ended up raising $33,550 in total.
Club president Mark Lewis said
the team knew it was an ambitious
project but to see the level of commitment
from the wider community
was amazing. The club hopes to
start designing the construction by
April.
CYCLE PROJECT FUNDING
The Aranui Bike Fix Up project will
receive $10,000 of funding from the
city council. The project is focused
on getting people in Aranui and the
surrounding areas into cycling and
cycle maintenance and repair.
pushed to get the main platform
Personal Pathways for Success
This year our Linwood College at Ōtakōro students have
received an unprecedented total of $83,000 in scholarship
funding from the University of Otago.
Jasmine Keating received the Māori Entrance
Scholarship of $13,000 over two years,
Phoenix Evans received the Māori Entrance
Scholarship of $13,000 over two years, Ranalia
Savelio received the Pacific Peoples’ Entrance
Scholarship of $13,000 over two years and
Becky Bennett received the Otago Pathway
Scholarship with a value of $5,000.
Linwood College at Ōtākaro has cultivated extremely
beneficial relationships for our students with our
local and other universities. This year our Careers
Department has been working alongside Otago’s
Liaison Officer, Prajesh Chhanabhai, resulting in an
unprecedented amount of scholarships being offered
to our graduating seniors. We have seen a wonderful
number of students offered a total of $83,000 towards
their study at the university. The majority of these
students are intending to study Health Sciences at
Otago, while Jasmine Keating will be focusing on
Education with a major in Māori. This is an exciting
result for our Careers Department in connecting and
advocating for our ākonga in their chosen fields.
Discovering, establishing, and staying the course
of a student’s pathway has always been an integral
focus of our school. It is fitting that the name of our
new rebuilt school, conceptualized and gifted to us
by Ngāi Tūāhuriri, will be Te Aratai College, meaning
Pathway to the Sea. We often use the allegory of
the braided river to inform our students of creating
their educational purpose, finding their own distinct
tributary through all that the riverbed can teach us.
Within our curriculum there is much we do to engender
our ākonga with their chosen futures. Both our junior
and senior school use Career Central to make
their subject choices. Career Central is software
developed here in Aotearoa that utilizes career
development theory based on input from schools,
businesses and institutions all over the country. It
manages a student’s subject choices, maps them
throughout their schooling, and offers classes that
align to their chosen career pathways. Students
make these choices in our Ako classes, LCŌ’s
version of a vertical form class. These classes have
students of every year level, enabling conversations
about subjects and experiences across the school,
junior to senior.
Paul Reyes, Kaye Maravilla, Rose Lim and Daniel
Nieuwenhuize all individually received a 150th
Entrance Scholarship of $13,000 over two years.
Students attending the Rotary National Science
and Technology Forum.
Student pathways are also discovered and explored
through our extensive EOTC (Education outside
the classroom) programmes. These knees-deep,
hands-on experiences send students beyond the
school gates. Among these are our Level 3 Business
students going to Ara to pitch ideas in a dragon’s
den-style competition and compete in the Lion
Foundation Youth Enterprise awards. Our Level 2
Tourism classes travel to Queenstown and Hamner
to visit tourism operators and locations. We send
our Year 12 Science students to the Rotary National
Science and Technology Forum for high achieving
Year 12 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering
and Mathematics) students who are interested
in exploring where these subjects can take them
through to university and beyond. We have a tour
to the University of Otago where students meet
lecturers, deans and OU students to discuss courses
and varsity life.
It is in these excursions that our students and
faculty have created the connections and ongoing
relationships that have helped garner such an
impressive scholarship result for our seniors moving
into tertiary education. We watch, with eager eyes,
to see what possibilities and potential their pathways
may realize.
IAN MORRIS has been
looking after Victoria Park’s
visitor centre gardens for more
than 20 years as a volunteer
ranger.
Three days a week Ian slogs
up Dyers Pass Rd on his push
bike to tend to the gardens
and his efforts have been
recognised by his fellow park
rangers.
They surprised Ian with
a new electric bike to help
him with his ride to the park,
describing him as an “absolute
legend.”
Delighted by the generosity
of the gift, Ian named the bike
Black Beauty before taking it
for a quick spin.
“I can get rid of all my old
bikes now,’’ he said.
Ranger Nigel Morritt, who
works closely with Ian, told
him the bike was a small
thank you for all his years of
hard work.
“You’re a very important
part of our little family up
here,” he said.
“You are an absolute
legend. We just want to
say thanks because you have
done an awful lot of work for
us and you are a very special
person.’’
City council parks
GENEROSITY: Ian Morris with ranger Nigel Morritt and
other council rangers gifting him his e-bike.
programmes and partnerships
manager Kate Russell said
Ian has special intellectual
needs but he has never let that
slow him down and he’s an
inspiration to the park rangers
and other volunteers.
“Like all of us, Ian isn’t
getting any younger and it
has been getting harder for
him to make the ride up to
Victoria Park,” she said.
“He loves the routine of
coming to the park and it’s
really good for his well-being,
so we decided it was time Ian
went electric.”
Russell said with an e-bike,
Ian can remain part of the
team at Victoria Park and
stay connected to the cycling
community on the Port Hills.
Ian will still be able to ride up
Dyers Pass Rd, but it will be
gentler on his body.
“The bike is Ian’s gateway to
the world so having an e-bike
will also make his day-to-day
life easier and help him stay
connected with his family,”
said Russell.
Russell said the park rangers
set up a Givealittle page to
raise money for the e-bike and
persuaded Ecoquip NZ Ltd to
donate an accessory package
to go with it.
A significant number of the
donations received through
the Givealittle page came
from the mountain biking
community who shared the
campaign link on their social
media networks.
Ma whero ma pango ka oti ai te mahi
With red and black the work will be complete
With only a few days to go until Christmas it is nice to take
a breath and take the time to reflect on everything we
have achieved as a kura this year. There have been many
wero along the way and as a kura we have weathered the
storm of COVID-19 Lockdown and an unprecedented
need for online learning. Together we have invented a new
normal. Through all of this turmoil we never lost sight of
our ultimate goal - ākonga success and achievement at all
levels - in all things.
With the drawing to a close of the 2021 school year I
want to take this opportunity to thank our Haeata kaimahi
and ākonga and our Board, for what has been an amazing
year. My congratulations also go to kaimahi and ākonga in
the senior kura for their outstanding results in NCEA this
year. There are few kura that can say they achieved 120%
improvement at Level 1 NCEA in just one year, but ākonga
at Haeata have done just that. There are few kura that can
say they quadrupled their Credits at Excellence level at
Level three of NCEA, but ākonga at Haeata have done just
that. There are very few kura that can lay claim to winning
90% of the sporting competitions their teams were entered
into across all sporting codes, but ākonga at Haeata have
done just that. There are few kura that can show that
ākonga attendance rates improved by 40% across the
board, but ākonga at Haeata have done just that.
Sadly, last week we farewelled our Year 13 cohort at
senior prize giving. These amazing rangatahi leave us with
a real sense of pride in their achievement and a very clear
focus on their next steps. Many are off to tertiary study,
some to apprenticeships, and others to their very first fulltime
job. As a kura we wish them all the very best for the
future. I would like to thank our ākonga leaders for their
service to Haeata and wish them every success. We know
all our rangatahi leaving in 2021 will return to Haeata in the
future, to stand on what is assuredly their tūrangawaewae.
I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate
our ākonga leaders for 2022:
We are excited to work with you all as we set off on the
next stage of our educational journey together.
As we contemplate our new normal under COVID-19 in
2022 and organise new ways of managing ourselves under
the new Traffic Light system, the one thing we need to
keep in mind is the need for a real break over the holidays.
Please take the time to rest, rejuvenate and restore. 2022
will be an exciting year for us all and we have much to look
forward to.
week we got the great
news that one of the
entries was one of two
shortlisted from nearly
200 entries, and was on
exhibition on Level 1 at
Tūranga, Christchurch
The design Aulelei (Beautiful) by Hadassah Timo, Brooklyn
Tuiloma and Queen Faagase of Year 9 was inspired by the
Samoan ceremonial headdress Tuiga.
“This year there was an outstanding level of excellence in
the entries received, and to be shortlisted is a significant
achievement. We are very proud of your students who
put their designs forward in this opportunity, and delighted
to exhibit this work. The selection panel of judges were
very impressed by this wonderful, creative design, please
congratulate these students on their great work.” Josie
Climate change & council
Very proud of our ākonga who graduated
from Children’s University this morning at
junior assembly.
Te Mātāpuna Mātātahi | Children’s
University aims to raise young people’s
aspirations for higher education and
encourage lifelong learning. The University
of Canterbury and Lincoln University
are working in partnership to deliver the
programme, which is the first of its kind in
New Zealand.
They fill the passport with hours of
learning or volunteering outside the school
classroom. The passport is stamped
by registered Learning Destinations or
volunteering organisations. Once 30 hours
of learning or volunteering are reached,
students are invited to attend a graduation
ceremony to celebrate their
achievements.
This year we had ākonga graduate with 30
-60 hours, 100 hours and our top ākonga
graduated with over 400 hours.
Katahi nā koutou.
The Year 9 and 10 students have done significant
work learning about climate change this year.
Many of our students are passionate about this
issue and motivated to find ways to make a real
change. Four of our ākonga were privileged to be
invited by Christchurch City Council to contribute
their voice to a group of young people from
various schools from the east side and other
low lying or coastal areas. This incredible group
of young people met at council and worked
together to prepare a submission to present to
council around the council’s long term planning
for climate change. I was in awe listening to their
ideas and opinions, voiced in such a respectful
manner, as they worked with students from
other schools to decide their priorities and key
points for submission. The students then went
to council chambers, voiced their collective
ideas to the councillors present and voted on
the final wording on their submission. I have
such incredible respect for these brave and
articulate ākonga, who were able to stand
up and be a voice for young people in our
community.
Helping each
other through
COVID-19
With more cases of COVID-19 in the community, it’s possible you and your whānau
will be exposed to the virus. To make sure you’re ready, have a plan in case you or
someone in your house tests positive and needs to isolate.
Everyone who tests positive for COVID-19, and those who live with them, will need to
isolate for at least 10 days to stop the spread of the virus. If someone else in your house
tests positive for COVID-19, they’ll be advised how much longer they need to isolate.
Make a plan
If you’re travelling and away from home, know how you will
get home or self isolate where you are.
While isolating, you will need to have all of your food and
necessities delivered. You cannot go to work, school, church
or any community or private events or gatherings. No one
outside of the people you live with can visit or enter the home.
Most fully-vaccinated people with COVID-19 are likely to have
a mild to moderate illness and will fully recover at home.
Who can help out
Be prepared in case you’re exposed to COVID-19. Speak with
a neighbour, friend, or whānau about the support you could
need. For instance, dropping off food and supplies, and help
with activities outside the house. Being ready is about people,
conversations, connections and knowing what to do, so your
whānau and community can help each other when needed.
Support while isolating
It’s normal to feel anxious about isolating with COVID-19.
You’ll have a support person who will contact you often
to check that you and your whānau are safe and supported
– even if you’re travelling and away from home. You will also
get a telephone number for 24-hour health support.
If you need more help or support to manage at home,
you can access a COVID-19 welfare line.
What you’ll need
To help you get through, you will need to have food,
medications and supplies available to you. Find a detailed
checklist to help you prepare at Covid19.govt.nz/prepare
Check what support is available for self-isolating at home
and find more preparation tips at Covid19.govt.nz/prepare
