The Creative Writ<strong>in</strong>g and Visual Arts Classes at St.<br />
Stephen’s understand the beautiful chiaroscuro that<br />
occurs when the brightest lights sh<strong>in</strong>e dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
darkest nights. Teachers Ms Egan, Ms Fedich, and<br />
Ms Guerra hope that you will enjoy these works by<br />
students, celebrat<strong>in</strong>g the wonders of the season and<br />
the ways <strong>in</strong> which we cont<strong>in</strong>ue to light our paths<br />
through darkness, literal and metaphorical.<br />

Pulp Serenity<br />
The hill was plastered with bright orange trees,<br />
peel<strong>in</strong>g tambour<strong>in</strong>es like sk<strong>in</strong>s of mandar<strong>in</strong>s.<br />
The w<strong>in</strong>d rumbled the trees and ruffled the waves.<br />
I foraged for you.<br />

Snow lights<br />
Snowflakes were fall<strong>in</strong>g down on the frozen lake covered<br />
with frost, creat<strong>in</strong>g a soft and white carpet. You could hear<br />
the laughter of the children <strong>in</strong> the distance that got lower<br />
and lower and farther as the sun went down over the vast<br />
hills. You could still hear the Christmas carols of the stalls<br />
not far from there and the rustle of the skates of those<br />
who skated on the lake, creat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>tertw<strong>in</strong>ed l<strong>in</strong>es on the<br />
white carpet that covered the majestic lake. The chestnut<br />
smell became lighter and lighter as the ovens were turned<br />
off and the w<strong>in</strong>dows of the houses were closed and the<br />
only ones rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g outside under the night sky were<br />
those full of snow, look<strong>in</strong>g at the snowflakes cover<strong>in</strong>g even<br />
the flash<strong>in</strong>g colored lights that covered every corner and<br />
wall that kept the city alive.<br />
The fire of this year burn<strong>in</strong>g out, creat<strong>in</strong>g a blaz<strong>in</strong>g next<br />
year,<br />
A celebration filled with the next chapter of our lives,<br />
A time of joy and of new beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gs, the new year’s<br />
celebration.<br />

The end of another year<br />
Lights, everywhere.<br />
Decorated on the balconies of apartments.<br />
On the door frames, and w<strong>in</strong>dows of houses.<br />

A New Year<br />
The evergreen leaves forever stuck to the ground,<br />
Frozen branches stiffly sway<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the icy w<strong>in</strong>d,<br />
As the match br<strong>in</strong>gs flame to the dry logs <strong>in</strong>side,<br />
a p<strong>in</strong>k warm scent flows through the home.<br />
Torn paper and ribbons left beh<strong>in</strong>d by eager children<br />
everywhere,<br />
Cold white snow fall<strong>in</strong>g from the gray cool sky,<br />
A picture perfect moment dur<strong>in</strong>g the years first and f<strong>in</strong>al<br />
frost,<br />
with the wheel of the world turn<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong> to a new year.<br />
