Here’s To A Prosperous New Year
OVER the last 41-years that I have
published this magazine, there were
probably about half a dozen times that I
started out the January issue with “Good
Riddance to Last Year!” I have to recycle
that sentiment for 2021 and hope I won’t
have to use it again!
RETAILERS had a tough run for
the last couple of years, albeit 2021
was considerably improved over its
predecessor. With the pandemic, that
we are hoping will be reclassified an
endemic soon, many of our businesses
ran on fumes. We’ve lost many retailers
and wholesalers who will be missed.
Those who toughed it out have figured
out ways to make their operations run
lean and mean.
THE best news in our market is that
there are so many new businesses
opening up. Many displaced workers
are starting their own merchandise
businesses. Some are online, others in
their local neighborhoods. I personally
see this by the uptick in mentoring
requests I am getting from my local Score
SBA that I volunteer with. We also see
that there were more new store openings
than closings which is a great indicator
that we are getting back on track.
OWNING and operating an
independent business is one of the
things that make this country great.
While we’ve spent the last two years
fighting archaic covid restrictions and
recently find ourselves fighting to keep
the “American Way” lifestyle, we have
survived. The future is looking bright and

according to all forecasts we should see a
greatly improved 2022.
WITH the new year should come a new
look at your business. It is time to restock
your shelves and website offerings with
new and exciting products. Reach out to
make connections with new suppliers.
The trade shows are restarting and
there is no better place to rekindle the
enthusiasm for your business.
MANY wholesalers are also changing
over their lines and that is a great time
to get some great deals on merchandise.
Just buy smart. Sometimes a closeout
means that demand is gone. Other times
it only means that the wholesaler needs
to liquidate to raise funds or if they have
overstock. Take advantage of the markets
and buy smart for your business.
TIME to dust off your unsold goods
and mark them down to clear them out.
You can also donate merchandise to
charity and take a full deduction. Keep
this mantra in mind, “if it didn’t sell last
year, it probably won’t sell this year.” Turn
your old goods into funds to buy new
goods.

Pandora Chooses Physical Stores Over Amazon
JEWELRY brand Pandora, which is a $12.3 billion brand operating 2600 stores globally says that it will be
investing in physical stores rather than join e-commerce platforms like Amazon or Farfetch. They feel that
they already have an audience and do not need the exposure from those sites and feel that opening the
physical stores will connect better with their buyers.
WITH over 2600 stores globally, Pandora does around 62 percent of their business at brick-and-mortar
stores. This decision to invest more in physical stores is certainly encouraging to all retailers in that realm.
Wayfair To Open Three New Physical Stores
IN more exciting news for the brick-and-mortar retail scene, Wayfair, one of the largest furniture and
home goods sellers in the USA becomes the latest online retailer to expand their physical presence. Wayfair
will be making their biggest move ever on expansion as it opens three new stores. At the moment Wayfair’s
outlet store in Florence, KY remains closed due to covid and the reopening date is being determined now.
THE new stores that are being set will showcase furniture, bedding, housewares and other home items.
Shoppers will have the option of having their purchases delivered directly to their homes after making their
buys.
WAYFAIR had been experimenting with brick-and-mortar stores as far back as 2018 when it opened
several pop-up shops followed by a full service store in Natick, MA. That store closed permanently in 2020.
The company does over $14.1 billion a year and feels this shift back into physical stores is necessary as
shoppers want to touch and feel items before making their purchases. Additionally, shipping from a store is
often less expensive than shipping from a warehouse as well as physical sites being a much less expensive
way to acquire customers versus digital marketing.
THE retail industry has gone through a major shareout over the last couple of years, during which
traditional retailers closed thousands of locations. In 2022 we will see retailers open more stores than they
close for the first time since 2017, which is quite encouraging for all brick-and-mortar businesses.
MOST of the new growth is coming from dollar stores, convenience stores and off price chains, but
we have seen that many other retailers are retrenching kike department stores and mall-based apparel
chains which are closing fewer stores. Perhaps the end of the brick-and-mortar apocalypse has come.
Everything’s Bigger In Texas
RETAILERS are heading to Texas in a big way. New clothing, fragrance stores are opening in NorthPark
along with the new look of Levi Strauss. The resurgence of retail is on the way and its first stop appears to
be NorthPark Mall where many well known top brand retailers are opening shop, including many start-ups
who are dabbling in brick-and-mortar and seeking their fortunes at this fast growing mall that has seen a
tremendous growth of selling space. Hopefully a sign of the times for us all!

THE FAX MACHINE
The fax machine is already as basic to the office
as the telephone. If your store sells anything
more than the morning paper, the business will
benefit from a modest investment in a fax machine.
In an age that thrives on instant access to
information, the fax sets up a communications
link with anyone, anywhere, anytime. You
wouldn’t think of telephoning a supplier at
midnight when you finally finish your inventory
check to place next month’s order. You can
fax it in, though. That same convenience applies
to your customers. They can place orders
with you around the clock, or when your voice
phone is busy, by fax.
As valuable as the fax is for ordering, it’s a
uniquely useful tool for transferring printed information
whenever it’s needed. Suppose your
distributor is out of stock of the product you
order, but suggests something similar. As soon
as you’re off the phone, you can be reading the
specification sheets on that item, sent via fax.
And think of the promotional possibilities. Suppose
your store’s specialty is industrial cleaning
supplies. Your latest stock check reveals
you’ve over ordered and have an abundance of
Brand Z vacuum cleaner bags sitting on your
shelves. You’ve got to unload them, and free up
those inventory dollars. You work up a special
deal, and distribute it via fax to customers who
are big users of that particular bag. They take
advantage of the deal, ordering by fax. Within
2 days, you’ve reduced the inventory to the appropriate
level.
In the smaller office with limited needs, the fax
can also do double duty as a copy machine. You
wouldn’t want to run off hundreds of sales flyers
with it, but when you need one or two
copies in a hurry, the fax machine’s copying capabilities
serve well.
Before you head out to purchase your fax, determine
how it’ll be used. Then decide how
many phone lines you’ll need installed in your
shop. You’re already paying the phone company
to have one phone installed; there’s no
reason to pay for another service call. If your
fax usage will be limited to business management
chores – correspondence with suppliers,
placing orders, and the like – you can probably
get by without a dedicated fax line. If you use
the Call Waiting feature on that line, make sure
you can disable Call Waiting service or you’ll
lose your fax transmissions whenever another
call comes in. On the other hand, if you plan to
publish or promote your fax number, and encourage
customers to use it to reach the store,
you’ll need a separate line for the fax machine.

If you plan on using the fax as a promotional
tool, announcing special sales to a select group
of customers, look for “broadcast” capability.
Faxes with this can be set to automatically dial
a list of fax numbers and transmit a document
to each, unattended. Models with a “delayed
calling” feature let the user set the time to make
these calls, say, after hours when the phone
rates drop. A built-in memory is a valuable feature
if you’ll rely on the fax as an electronic
order taker. Should the machine run out of
paper, it’ll store any received documents in
memory until it’s reloaded with paper. Without
a memory, you stand to lose the orders.
The main decision you must
make is whether to buy a plainpaper
or thermal-paper fax machine.

breaks occur. Most fax machines use special
heat-sensitive “thermal” paper. These cost far
less than plain-paper fax machines, although
prices on the latter continue to fall. Plain-paper
faxes deliver a higher-quality document, are
easier to load, and work with regular paper. If
you decide to go with a less expensive thermal
fax model, make sure it has a built-in automatic
paper cutter. Without it, you’ll spend a lot of aggravating
time with scissors cutting up documents
and orders.

A spreadsheet program offers the software
equivalent of a financial spreadsheet, with report,
graphics, and interpretive functions built
in. A database is a file of information, called
data, that can be organized by category or an
attribute.
Software is sold on computer media: either a
floppy disk or CD-ROM. Floppy disks are a
form of magnetic media, while a CD-ROM,
which holds hundreds of times more information,
is a laser-based technology. Software sold
on disk may also be loaded and stored on the
computer’s hard drive, a large-capacity disk.
Hard drives may be internal – built into the machine
– or external – connected by cable to one
of the computer ports. The storage capacity of
a hard drive is measured in megabytes or gigabytes.

megabyte as equal to the amount of information
stored on one floppy disk.

A port is where you connect other devices to

the computer. A dot matrix printer is a low-cost
unit that produces serviceable quality text for
most purposes. A Laser printer produces much
higher-quality images. Laser output represents
today’s business standard for official correspondence.

As a toll for information management, the computer
frees the retailer from may of the lesser
chores that go with being in charge. In the
process it also delivers the power to accomplish
things once considered too labor-intensive for

being printed, the system updates information
on inventory levels and the day’s sales. The inventory
management system can be set to alert
you when stock is dangerously low, or point
out a sudden surge in sales that means opportunity.
Sound enticing? It should. Today, a computer
system makes good retail sense.
DETERMINING YOUR NEEDS
Selecting the right system for your store demands
time. It’s not a decision to rush. A computer
system is a relatively expensive
investment. If not carefully thought out, it can
prove a frustrating waste of your limited resources.
The search begins with an honest evaluation
of your own computer skills, then your
needs. If you’ve been working on a computer
system for years, and are comfortable with the
platform, you’re already ahead
in the game. You don’t need any

THE WORLD OF COMPUTERS?
If you’re entirely new to computers, selecting
the best system begins with the software. You
may think of computers in terms of hardware,
but the software is the key that unlocks all the
power for you. The computer will only prove
as useful a tool as the software allows. Many
software programs are available in different
versions for different operating platforms.
Some are published only in versions for one
type of machine. A few years from now, compatibility
won’t be an issue. We’re not there yet,
though. The software you decide best services
your needs will dictate which hardware you
buy. You can purchase an integrated package of
software, hardware, and technical support
from a single vendor, but it’s not always the
most cost-effective way to go about it.
More likely than not, there’s already
a software program on
the market for your particular
needs, specific to your retail industry.

developing software programs for every
conceivable application, including retail management.
If you browse the smaller ads and
classifieds in the back of the trade magazines,
you’ll probably come up with the names of a
few of these programs.

Before You Buy, Make Sure To
Speak With The Real Experts
Before you contact any computer dealer or
manufacturer, and your name gets in the hands
of a salesperson, talk to other retailers in your
business about what programs they use. Take
notes on what they share about their experience
with the software and how it helps manage
stores. You'll find the satisfied ones pretty
chatty. People take pride talking about how
much they’ve been able to accomplish with
their computers.

You need to know the name of the program
they use, how long they’ve had
it, and what computer hardware they
run on it. Get the names of the program(s)
used for information and inventory
management, and the name and number
of the vendor and publisher. Ask all if
they’re completely satisfied with what they use,
and if they would recommend it. Always inquire
about other programs used in the past. If
they used any others, why did they switch?
Some of those programs may still be on the
market, and the retailers may provide you with
good reasons to avoid them.
Next, contact your industry trade group or the
appropriate retail organizations. Inquire if
they’ve tested any software, and is so, could
they recommend any particular program. Some
trade groups publish software guides, with reviews
of what’s currently being sold. Request
or purchase a copy. Your next best bet is to ask
for the names of industry contacts well versed

investigating first. Contact the publisher and
ask for some information, including a demonstration
disk if one is available. If you’ve
searched this far and still come up empty, it
may be that no one has written

Whether you hire a consultant or go it alone, be
as specific as possible when determining your
computer needs. That makes selection of a
computer system another project for your now
dogeared and tattered notebook. Think in
terms of how you work now, and how you
want the computer to help you work smarter.
Start with information management. Write
down every responsibility with which you
think the computer will help you do a better
job: accounting, bookkeeping, scheduling,

SELECTING THE HARDWARE
As it’s sold, a computer hardware system actually
consists of several basic components and,
depending on need, several more peripherals.
The basics include the central processing unit
(CPU), which is the brain of the machine; the
monitor or screen; the hard drive; and the keyboard.
Attached to that CPU may be a mouse
for manipulating the cursor around the screen,
a modem for communicating with another
computer, a printer, and supplementary disk or
CD-ROM drives. The basic recommended
hardware configuration for managing
a business by computer
today includes a CPU, monitor,
hard drive, CD-ROM drive, keyboard,
mouse, and laser printer.
If you aren’t directed to a particular hardware
platform, you’ve a couple of choices to consider.
Most small store owners will find their
needs adequately served by either of the two
personal computer formats available in the

it’s worth your while to spend time shopping
around for the hardware. Computer hardware
is a hotly contested market, prone to fierce price
competition. Typically the computer is sold as
a package of the basic system configuration described
above. Most ads will mention the size
of the monitor; a name or number identifying
the microprocessor that drives the computer;
the amount of RAM (internal memory) standard
with the machine, measured in
megabytes; the size of the hard drive, again
measured in megabytes; any expansion boards
included with the system; and its overall expansion

Your biggest responsibility is to make sure
what the public sees in you is likable. All
types of relationships and perceptions rest on
that foundation. Recall the neighborhood stores
of your youth. What do you remember most
about those places? More likely than not, when
you think of the store, the owner comes to
mind: his personality, accent, laughter, or
frown. The successful store owner is virtually
inseparable from the store. The
two create an identity, a unified
whole. A store may change
hands and be regarded as the
same store. But with each new
owner, the business assumes a
new identity, a reflection of the
owner’s personality.
That’s something lost to the larger stores, the
impersonal places that seem to dominate so
much of modern retailing. Some retail chains
try to reclaim this identity through advertising,
using the company founder as a spokesperson
espousing the store philosophy. Noble as the attempt
may be, it’s just not the same as walking
in and seeing that person stacking shelves or
standing behind the register. That’s the kind of
personal connection, the sense of one-on-one
contact, that makes shopping the small store so
special. People want to see and hear from the
expert, the front man or woman who is the
store.
