Packing a truck headed for Mayfield, Kentucky
Madison County mayors work
together to help tornado victims
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
On the afternoon of Dec. 20, a steady stream of generous folks
pulled up alongside a large truck parked not far from Plain City’s
municipal building. From their car trunks and back seats, those
folks unloaded everything from blankets to bottled water. The goal:
Fill the truck with supplies for the residents of tornado-ravaged
Mayfield, Ky.
Organized by Mount Sterling Mayor Marci Darlington, the collection
effort was dubbed “Mayors of Madison County for Mayfield.”
Donations were collected Dec. 20-22 in Plain City, London, West
Jefferson and Mount Sterling.
Darlington knew she wanted to help after hearing about the devastation
in Mayfield earlier this month. She reached out to the other
mayors in Madison County to make it a county-wide effort.
At about the same time, London resident John Lickliter had the
same thoughts. Knowing he wanted to do something, he reached
out to London Mayor Patrick Closser who pointed him in Darlington’s
direction.
Lickliter’s employers, Gueterverkehr LLC and Tri-State Expedited
Service, jumped on board, providing the use of a truck to collect
and haul the supplies and donating money for gasoline.
Lickliter donated his time to drive the supplies to Mayfield.
The project came together in just a matter of days, and the response
was great.
Plain City Mayor Jody Carney helped to
spread the word by posting information on
the village’s app and social media pages.
“I “I just said, ‘Let’s show what Plain City
is is made of, and let’s get the giving going,’”
she said.
Word spread, and people like Mary Sims
and Vickie Yoder showed up.
“It’s a time of of giving and being kind and
making an extra effort,” said Sims as she
and Yoder dropped off blankets, water and
toilet paper at the Plain City collection
point. “It really feels good. I’m so glad we’re
doing this.”
Plain City resident Tiffany Eudaily donated
feminine hygiene products, diapers,
wipes, baby bath products and baby pajamas.
“It “It pulls at at your heart strings as a mom,”
said Eudaily, who also recently became a
grandmother. She felt for the children impacted
by by the devastation in Kentucky.
Carney related the story of an elementary
school teacher at Olentangy Public
Schools who heard about Madison County’s
efforts. The teacher had completed her student
teaching in Mayfield, Ky., and wanted
to to help them out. She and her students at
Olentangy collected a moving truck full of
supplies and dropped them off in Plain City.
“Mayors of Madison County for Mayfield” kicked off on Dec. 20 in Plain City. The collection of supplies for residents
in tornado-ravaged Mayfield, Ky., ran through Dec. 22 at different locations around the county. (From
left) Vickie Yoder and Mary Sims were among the residents who dropped off donations in Plain City; London
resident John Lickliter, Mount Sterling Mayor Marci Darlington and Plain City Mayor Jody Carney were there to
accept them.
Darlington and Lickliter
were thrilled with the response,
and Darlington said
this is just the beginning.
When Mayfield, Ky., fades
from the headlines, she said
she will still be there for them.
“I pledged my next two
years as mayor to help them on
their way. My gosh, think if it
happened to us?,” Darlington
said. “This might be something
we do quarterly. We can check
in with them to see what they
need as time goes on.”
Everyone is still raving about this year’s Christmas in the Village.
The Mount Sterling Chamber of Commerce hosted the event
on Dec. 4. The lighted parade was one of the many bright spots.
“The deputies who worked (the parade) were all impressed. They
loved it,” said Deputy Jack Dill at the Dec. 13 village council meeting.
“They said it was very enjoyable just to be standing and watching
it.”
Becky Martin, a council member and
Chamber president, said the parade included
a whopping 46 entries.
“We never expected that kind of
turnout. It just kept growing and growing,”
she said.
The turnout of visitors was big, too.
Hundreds of people watched the parade,
walked the streets, and stopped in to participating
businesses, Martin said.
Entries in the Community Center’s
Christmas tree silent auction, set up at
town hall, showed that visitors came
from both near and far away.
“Everywhere that we had something
set up, it was so packed. Shoulder to
shoulder,” Martin said, adding that food
trucks and other groups offering goodies
ran out of food due to the large turnout.
“We have really big shoes to fill next
year because it was an amazing success.”
Martin thanked everyone who helped
to put on the event, including her fellow
Chamber members and council members,
Masonic Lodge 269, lodge member Tim
Corbin for serving as the parade organizer
and announcer, Sterling Joint Ambulance
District, Tri-County Joint Fire
District, American Legion Post 417, and
the many businesses and individuals
who made donations of one kind or another.
Martin noted that the Giving Tree is
still on display at town hall. New hats
and mittens attached to the tree are free
for the taking.
With a giant inflatable snowman at the helm, the festive Masonic
Lodge 269 trailer rolls down the parade route during Mount Sterling’s
Christmas in the Village.
What’s a parade without a little whimsy? All Ohio Portable Toilets
kept it simple and silly.
MP food service adapts to pandemic challenges
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Adapting—it’s an ongoing state of operations
during the COVID-19 pandemic for
nearly every facet of a school district. Food
service certainly is no exception.
Sherri Allen, food service supervisor at
Madison-Plains Local Schools, said the 2021-
22 school year started with challenges, including
illness and food and supply shortages.
“It was a rough beginning, but we muddled
through it, and we learned along the
way. It continues to be a struggle each week,”
she said at the Dec. 14 school board meeting.
Bright spots have emerged, though.
Normally, federal guidelines require
school districts to follow certain guidelines
when menu planning. Choices must adhere
to calorie counts, sodium and saturated fats
restrictions, a certain percentage of whole
grains, and so on. That can be difficult to do
when certain foods are hard to get, Allen said.
To help school districts address this issue, the
United States Department of Agriculture issued
waivers this school year. Districts can
order alternative items without penalty when
compliant items are not available.
Another bright spot is Healthy Pro, new
software that will help Allen and her staff
plan menus and allow school nurses to
check for things like allergens and carbohydrate
counts for certain students. Allen is
working through a training on the software
now. When it is up and running, parents
and guardians will have access to an app to
see the menus for each day, complete with
nutritional information.
Todd Mustain, district treasurer, noted
that federal COVID-19 relief funds distributed
through the county government covered
the cost of the software.
Allen also was happy to report that participation
in the Seamless Summer meal option
is up. The federal program offers free

breakfast and lunch to students at all grade levels. Participation in
grades K-6 is up 42 percent for breakfast and 43 percent for lunch.
Participation at the junior high and high school is up 71 percent for
breakfast and 60 percent for lunch.
At the Dec. 14 meeting, Allen recognized the members of her food
service team, praising them for going above and beyond their job
duties each day and for making connections with the students.
“They build a rapport with the students. That’s rare for lunch
ladies to just intertwine with them and talk to them. These kids
know they can come and just have a talk with them if they want
to... They are making a difference,” she said.
Chad Eisler, district superintendent, praised the food service
staff for weathering pandemic-related issues over the past two
school years, including closures, food shortages, and packing food
Mt. Sterling ends year on positive financial note
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
The village of Mount Sterling is ending
the year on a positive note financially.
“I’m pretty satisfied. The (state) auditors
are pretty satisfied with how the year’s ending.
Revenues have been well above budget
for several, several months now. That’s really
good news,” Courtney Bricker, the village’s
fiscal officer, reported at the Dec. 13
council meeting.
She noted the village spent just 67 percent
of the funds earmarked for expenditures
in 2021. Council member Andy Drake,
chair of the finance committee, said the carryover
will come in handy as the village is
looking at several large projects for 2022.
“We ended the year in a pretty solid footing.
The village is in good shape. It’s very
solvent. It’s pointed in the right direction,
and we have a pretty darn exciting 2022,”
obituaries
Drake said, adding he appreciates the input
residents and other village leaders provided
at finance meetings over the past year.
The next financial commission meeting
which includes state auditor representation,
is scheduled for 10 a.m. Jan. 25 at town hall.
Bricker also provided a rundown of building
and zoning activity for the year: residential
permits, 30; new dwellings, 11;
commercial, 4; right-of-way, 1; zoning, 24;
and variances, 9.
“That’s a lot,” Bricker said, adding that
the 11 permits for new dwellings are for
homes in Phase 2 of the Deer Creek Run development.
Drake thanked members of the planning
and zoning committee, most of whom are
community members, for their work in
2021. The group meets twice a month.
“This village is significantly changed as
a result of their hard work. We can see it.
You can actually do business with the village
in a meaningful way when it comes to
building and zoning. I am really thankful
for their efforts,” he said.
The village contracts with the village of
West Jefferson for planning and zoning
services. Bricker thanked Tom Hale and
Kristi West of that department for their
support, especially with their guidance in
updating Mount Sterling’s zoning map.
In other discussion and business:
• Mayor Marci Darlington thanked outgoing
council members Craig Hix and
Melanie Fritz for their service on council.
• Bricker reminded residents that cars
parked on public roadways must be moved
every 24 hours. Otherwise, owners will be
cited and the cars will be towed.
• Council unanimously passed the 2022
budget, transferred water and sewer funds,
and approved a contract with Rumpke for
solid waste removal.
The Dec. 27 council meeting has been
cancelled. In January, council will return to
its regular meeting schedule, 7 p.m. the second
council meeting, council member Becky Martin announced the creation
of a Friends of the Park committee. Deanna Pettit, owner of
Hammertime Pub in Mount Sterling, is heading up the group. Meetings
are set for 6 p.m. the fourth Thursday
of each month at town hall.
Pettit has already held fundraisers
through her business to benefit the park,
the most recent being a chili cookoff during
Christmas in the Village. The contest raised
over $600. Pettit has fundraisers planned
for the first three months of the year.
The Friends of the Park committee plans
to solicit donations from businesses and corporations
and explore other fundraising opportunities.
Anyone interested in helping is
welcome to attend the monthly meetings.
The local fundraising efforts go hand-inhand
with the village’s plans to apply for
state funding for improvements at the park.
In recent years, the city of London and the
village of West Jefferson have secured state
dollars for park projects. The deadline for
next year’s state funding cycle is March.
In the meantime, village leaders are seeking
input from residents about what they
would like to see at Mason Park. A link to a
short survey can be found on the village’s
home page, www.mtsterling.org. The survey
can be accessed directly at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GKL3W99.
Paper copies
are available in the town hall lobby.
The survey asks respondents how often
they visit the park, what activities bring
them to the park, and if they would visit the
park more often if it featured a better walking
path and if sidewalks were installed allowing
pedestrian traffic to get to the park
safely. The survey also asks if residents have
family members or friends who would take
advantage of an all-inclusive playground designed
for children of all abilities. London
and West Jefferson used state funding to install
all-inclusive playground equipment.
The survey includes a list of potential improvements:
bathrooms with running water,
concession stand, splash pad, enhanced
walking path in the park, sidewalks to the
park, dog park, trees and flowers, and
benches along the walking path.
Toy collection success
www.madisonmessengernews.com
On behalf of the Tri-County Firefighters
Association, I would like to thank all those
who donated to the 2021 toy drive. There
was an overwhelming response from the
community, as well as the local business,
sector regardless of the COVID-19 virus.
Some of the local organizations, businesses
and individuals that donated funds
this year were: Mount Sterling American
Legion Post 417 Charitable Fund, Meijer at
665 Grove City, Jay Car Construction, M&P
Partnership, Knights of Pythias Talmadge
Lodge 194, and Denny Wischmeyer.
I would also like to thank those who gave
generously with monetary funds and gift
cards and those who contributed during the
annual boot drive. As usual, the community
came together in a big way to help others in
need. I also want to thank the local businesses
that put a fire boot in their establishments
to collect funds.
The community served 20 families totaling
44 children. The Firefighters Association
could not do this without community
support, and we are looking forward to
2022! Happy holidays!
Parents at classroom parties?
December 26, 2021 - MADISON MESSENGER - Page 17
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Should the school district permit parents
to attend classroom parties? That’s a question
Madison-Plains Local Schools leaders
will reassess at the start of 2022.
The topic came up at the Dec. 14 school
board meeting when Chad Eisler, district
superintendent, asked Brad Miller, principal
for the K-6 building, to explain his decision
to bar parents from attending holiday
classroom parties.
Miller said many of the teachers did not
feel comfortable having parents in the buildings
at this time due to the pandemic.
“I know that the decision I have made is
probably not a popular decision with some
of the parents, but I had to make a decision
that I felt was the best for students and our
staff,” he said.
School board member Mark Mason said
that with sports, music, and other school
events back to normal capacity, he didn’t understand
Miller’s decision. He said he respects
the perspective of Miller and the teachers, but
said the topic was worth discussing.
“This is something small, but I do think
it has value,” Mason said.
Miller said parents most often attend
classroom parties in the K-3 grade levels.
Typically, that amounts to a couple of parents
per classroom.
Eisler agreed with Mason that parent involvement
in events like classroom parties
is “part of the fabric of schools.” It’s good to
have that interaction among parents, teachers,
and students, he said.
“We want a vibrant school community.
We want our parents involved. We want
them here,” Eisler said, but he also sees the
staff’s side.
“I do understand the concern for the
teachers who are interfacing with that
many students every day, and then you
bring some more adults into the mix — I get
it, I really do understand. It’s a difficult situation,”
he added.
Anthoula Xenikis, school board president,
said the board should respect Miller’s
decision and reevaluate the idea of parents
at classroom parties come January.
School board member Bryan Stonerock
said the same. Like everyone, he said he is
“ready to be done with the pandemic” and
its impact on what once were routine events,
but he respects the teachers’ input and
Miller’s decision.
“They deal with it every day,” he said.
Kelly Cooley, board vice president, suggested
school leaders consider adding something
like an end-of-the-year party if
pandemic conditions ease.
“There could be other events that we
could celebrate,” she said.
Levy and facilities
Xenikis, Mason and Eisler each thanked
voters for their support of the 1.25 percent
income tax levy renewal, which passed by
one vote in the Nov. 2 election.
“There’s a lot of potential. I’m excited for
the future,” Mason said.
Eisler said the renewal, which comes with a 10-year term, helps
to bring financial health and stability to the district. That, in turn,
allows district leaders to have long-term discussions about programming,
personnel, and facilities.
He noted the district’s permanent improvements levy is up for
renewal in 2022. Permanent improvement funds can be used for
projects such as facility upgrades.
“We want to have these things (finances) squared away so that
hopefully we can then have that conversation about facilities because
it is very, very desperately needed,” Eisler said.
Along those lines, Todd Mustain, district treasurer, reported the
district had to dip into its permanent improvement funds for unexpected
expenses this year.
“We have some failing infrastructure around the district that’s
starting to happen a little bit more frequently,” he said.
The district appropriated $32,000 to cover the following: service
for heating and air conditioning units in classrooms at the elementary
and junior high; razing the maintenance barn because it was
deemed unsuitable for use; purchasing a storage container to house
equipment; installing a gravel driveway to the new storage container;
and unexpected sewer and water operator costs.
Other business
Eisler said the district continues to make improvements to its mobile
app, available for free through the App Store or Google Play. The
app pulls information from the district website, allows users to sign
up for mobile push notifications by building, and provides students
with access to the Safe Schools help line, among other features.
The board named Cooley as president pro-tem for the board’s
Jan. 11 annual organizational meeting which will take place at 7
p.m. in the district meeting room, followed immediately by the
board’s regular monthly meeting.
