By Ng Woan Na| MTCC ACTIVITIESMTCC participated in the Indochina Malaysian BusinessChambers (MBCs) E-Summit on 30 August 2021. Thisdigital forum has brought together the Malaysia ExternalTrade Development Corporation (MATRADE), diplomaticrepresentatives and panelist speakers of businesschambers from five countries (Cambodia, Lao PDR,Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam). This session involveddiscussions on the latest economic outlook, areas ofkey business opportunities and potential avenues ofcollaboration and synergies to be explored betweenMBCs across the Indochina region.As the representative speaker of MTCC, Ng Woan Nahighlighted 12 targeted industries under Thailand 4.0Policy and key investment opportunities – with particularemphasis on development of the Eastern EconomicCorridor, the current most important flagship project ofthe Thai government. In the context of COVID-19, MTCCdiscussed Thailand’s economy projection and majorfactors contributing to the recovery of Thai economy.A focus discussion was made on areas of possiblecollaboration between MBCs in capturing businessopportunities across Indochina Region. In addressingthis topic, reference was made to an existing and operationalmodel (i.e. the ASEAN Economic Community(AEC) framework), in terms of the extent of economicintegration achieved between ASEAN member statesthrough the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) platform asestablished under the AEC framework, and how collaborationbetween MBCs could mitigate the loopholesrelating thereto (e.g. low utilization rate of AFTA as manycompanies were unaware of how to apply for tariff preferences).To achieve an effective collaboration between MBCs,MTCC proposed amongst others, an establishment ofJoint Comprehensive Committee, a uniformed bodyoverseeing the degree of economic integration betweenASEAN member states and reporting such progress toMATRADE for their further liaison with Association ofSoutheast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The said Committeewill conduct important roles (e.g. trade consultation andfacilitation). On trade facilitation, attention was made toa research conducted by Bank of Ayudhya (commonlyknown as Krungsri Bank) on factors in enhancing acountry’s sectoral potential to which the level of participationand activities’ position in global supply chain (i.e.supply chain strategy) was found to be the most importantfactor, thus highlighting the potential collaborationamong member states in the regional supply chain.On MBCs’ collaboration from the Regional ComprehensiveEconomic Partnership (RCEP) perspective, MTCCproposed to set up an ASEAN representative office inthe key partners of RCEP countries (i.e. China, Japan,Korea, Australia and New Zealand) in order to helpMalaysian companies integrate into their markets,promote collaboration and tap into investments in thirdcountries.This session was followed by an active Q&A sessionthat was highly appreciated and drew much engagementfrom the attendees.l 7 MTCC NEWS l December 2021
